Holy Ghost is this one haunting hell of a story. Clear as day to understand but dark as night in meaning, this story is simply brilliant. Don't let the awkward introduction scare you off, it wraps up nicely into quite the masterpiece.

It's about work chewing you up and spitting you out--literally. It's about the consequences of working your life away for some noble cause or some fantastic future. And, therefore, as gloomy as it seems, it serves as a reminder to take advantage of today, because if you don't, well... just read the story. It's only four pages. And it's fan-f*$?ing-tastitc.

Given that this is very short, even for a short story, I liked what I got. It was descriptive and haunting, in its own right. Definitely an interesting little story, if you've got a few minutes to spare. It could be average, but I really liked how it was told. Obviously, had it been longer there would had been more to it, but from a few pages a lot was included.

And then she sees you. She sees you and she begins to talk, not to you, oh no, but to the grey water that falls from the grey sky into the grey river. She says, "My son wanted to be a sailor," and you do not know what to reply, or how to reply. You would have to shout to make yourself heard over the roar of the rain, but she talks, and you listen. You discover yourself craning and straining to catch her words.

Effective, as Gaiman's ability to create eerie and haunting atmospheres is astounding, but too short. Creepy tales told using such exquisite language are rare treasures.

This was a good short story and very haunting. It reminded me of the Edgar Allan Poe story The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket in which poor Richard Parker is killed and eaten after a ship wreck. I do enjoy a good creepy story and this is one that will stay with you.

This is a lovely, chilling short story. While it only took me mere minutes to read the prose and the story will stay with me for much longer.

A wonderfully haunting read. No one does it quite as good as Neil Gaiman.

I told him not to go to sea.
I'm your mother, I said. The sea won't love you like I love you, she's cruel.
But he said, Oh Mother, I need to see the world.
I need to see the sun rise in the tropics, and watch the Northern Lights dance in the Arctic sky, and most of all I need to make my fortune and then, when it's made I will come back to you, and build you a house, and you will have servants, and we will dance, mother, oh how we will dance..

It's all the same. The sea took him.

When it comes to Neil Gaiman’s short stories, I find them to be hit or miss. This one, unfortunately, fell into the miss category for me. Down to a Sunless Sea was a quick read, but I wasn’t as wowed by it as I could have been. I happily powered through it, but I was left wanting more and there wasn’t anything that ensured it stayed with me. All in all, not a favourite from the author.

A marvellous little grotesque short story, with exceptionally vivid imagery and practically audible sounds. Might not have been the wisest to read it before bed, but worth whatever it brings.

A quick and chilling read that does its job well. The ending, perhaps, left just a little bit to be desired and is the only thing keeping it from a five-star rating, for me. Still, very worth the read for the quickness and effectiveness of it, and the enjoyable shiver it brings.

Gaiman's short story work, like anyone's, is really hit or miss. This one, I would say, lies in the miss category. A little creepy, sort of moody, with a twist to the end that was entertaining but not really all that engaging. A quick read, though, so not like I regret the time spent on it.
