What a bruiser of a read this was….fierce, dark yet very readable
We meet Belle who is awaiting her twins to join herself and hubby David for Christmas ( they are away at Uni ) and when Kit arrives home with Ivo her new boyfriend ( to say she is smitten is underplaying it ) the fireworks really start, lies are unearthed, past secrets brought to the fore and regrets and wounds opened up….and then, the worst thing imaginable for a Mum happens…..to even hint at this would ruin it but it is shocking
Got to big up Morag, the fussy and tetchy Mum In Law who was a superb character, tbh all the characters were but Morag is a ‘treasure’
Really really good read that throughly enjoyed

Jacqueline Sutherland has done it again. Last year I picked up a debut novel by her, The Coffin Club, and I loved the book so much that it was my book of the month for April 2022. Here we are again, one year later and this author delivers another absolutely brilliant read. Twin Truths is a twisty psychological suspense that will keep you eagerly flipping pages from start to end. The author builds a story around secrets coming back to haunt a woman when she is about to turn fifty. Long forgotten secrets that now threaten to destroy everything that is important to her.
I love the way the author brings her characters to life. They are realistic, everyday people to whom you can easily relate. I enjoyed the details about “wild swimming” each time Belle entered the water I felt the cold creeping up my body as the author shared her experience. This author writes a laid-back suspense that feels like a slow burn, yet you find yourself racing from page to page and all too quickly you have reached the end. This is an author I would highly recommend, and I cannot wait to see what she sends our way next.
Belle is about to celebrate her fiftieth birthday and she cannot wait to have her twin girls home for the first time since they left for university. While it has only been three months, Belle cannot wait to have them all to herself. When Kit arrives with her new boyfriend in tow Belle is a little disappointed. Yet, Ivo is confident and charming and the family seem to like him. Belle senses something is not right, is she just an over-protective mother? When Ivo reveals that he knows a lot more about Belle’s past than her own family she has to find a way to protect her family. But how far will Belle go to leave the past behind her?
I loved this book. As a mother of two daughters, I understood what Belle was feeling. No one is ever good enough for your little girl, and Ivo seemed just too perfect – at first. The twists and turns in this story are brilliant, you will not be able to predict what’s coming.
I found myself loving Jess – She was a quiet, well-put-together twin. She was the calm to Kit’s storm. This young woman played second fiddle to her sister throughout the story, yet she remained relaxed and never lost control – even when she has her own secret she wanted to share with her family. Belle was haunted by her past throughout the book making her a nervous, unpredictable character and when you find out what she is hiding you understand why. Kit was nothing more than a brat! She was self-involved and managed to turn every conversation and situation around to make it about herself. She was not a pleasant child.
Morag was brilliant – I could picture this lady walking into the room with her snooty comments and little digs at Belle. She added a light touch to an otherwise deep story. I loved her – she is without a doubt my favourite character in the story.
If you enjoy a suspense story that will keep you on the edge of your seat as you race from page to page to see what is going to happen next – then I would highly recommend you add this book to your TBR. It’s a brilliant read you do not want to miss.

The second book of my charity auction purchase. Not quite as deranged as the first. I think this was a good thing, but I had quite a lot of fun guessing what was going to happen. Mostly I assumed absolutely everyone was an evil twisted psychopath ( based mostly on the first book 😂). In particular I decided the meek loyal loving husband was behind it all and had been scheming evilly with his mother for 20 years. Spoiler alert, he wasn't ....

A very satisfying quick gripping read. I like that this author doesn't draw out the story development too much, it comes at you at a good pace. Quite liked the little twist at the end.

This was such an amazing read! The plot is really unique and the writing just flows you get carried away with the story and the moral dilemmas Belle has to work through. I can often find character led thrillers are a bit dull and drone on but this one kept moving forward at a really good pace and I couldnt wait to see what was about to happen next. The characters are original and realistic. They're well rounded and relatable. The twists are hinted at quite blatantly so there isn't any jaw dropping moments but there doesn't need to be, its still really engaging and keeps you totally invested. Personally I would wonder how a mother would be so chilled about knowing what she knows...... no spoilers...... and not stop it immediately but hey, each to their own I guess lol. She's not the kind if character that makes stupid decisions just to drag out the drama though and I was just so invested in her journey to keep her family safe. There is an eerie tension throughout, and the feeling of nit being able to escape the danger. Overall, I loved it and would highly recommend

The beginning was quite slow, it took me a while to get hooked. Due to the book description my expectations were higher. It disappointed me. The plot is meh and the ending is meh.

But it was an entertaining read after 150 pages. Kinda worth it as it has a good plot twist.

4.5* Belle is a happy, settled wife to David and mother to twins Jess and Kit. David is a teacher. Belle is big on family and is excited as the twins are due home for Christmas break. Jess is at Exeter and Kit is at Bristol. Belle sea swims every morning with her fellow Southwold Sea-Girls. In the winter that means her and Nancy. They Buddy up to ensure that if either has a problem the other is there to help.

Returning from her morning swim Belle gets a call from Kit, the younger twin, she wants to bring Ivo home for a few days over the holiday. Ivo? Belle asks. Kit’s boyfriend! Belle is surprised and not too happy. Feeling manipulated she sees that there is nothing more to say than yes. This is so like Kit! She and David were expecting a cosy family Christmas with the girls and Morag, David’s mother who lives in the granny flat attached to their house, catching up on the past few months especially as this was the girls first term, the first time they had all been apart for so long. It was just for a few days before Christmas. They would have to make the best of it.

Belle uses her morning sea swim to clear her head and work things through. She loves that first breathtaking moment when she plunges into the water. She finds the cold sea water swim at this time of year exhilarating but she understands the importance of keeping safe, the shock to the body of the cold waters can be deadly, that’s why she and Nancy swim at the same time. So many of the other Sea Girls give up during the coldest months. Not Belle it’s so much a part of her.

Then they are all together, it’s wonderful to have the girls home and all the family together again. Ivo is welcomed and they gather inside to chat and catch up. Maybe all will be okay and it’s only for a few days and then Ivo will be off and Christmas will be here.

Then it happens. Call me David. Call me Belle. Ahh, Bella, says Ivo. What! Belle is transported back to a time she had long forgotten, to that moment of madness – Felix! Surely not, how could Ivo? Then Ivo tells them about his father who was in a band called Hush. And Belle’s world turns upside down!

As Belle tries to make sense of what she heard she is filled with a sense of dread. Then over the course of the next few hours and days she and David are faced with Kits surprising decisions about her future. As she and David try to deal calmly and steer Kit to consider her choices in a more rational manner other things, little things and then bigger ones make Belle worried for Kit, for her family and the sense of dread looms large.

Belle worries that her secret will come out, that her family will be broken and when she adds the worry of things actually happening to her family she knows she must act, she must find out about Ivo in order to make their world right. What she learns is devastating, scary and makes Belle more determined to rid her and her family of this menace. What happens next will be to the reader as that first stroke is to the sea swimmer it will take your breath away.

Twin Truths is well written, the characters well drawn, the setting allows for the sense of community to be well utilised. I enjoyed the morning sea swim although only vicariously! It was fascinating to read and learn about it. I liked the way that the surprise elements were often subtly integrated into the storyline so that your reaction and that of the character was virtually simultaneous. The plot was well conceived and executed. All in all folks this is a doozy of a story and one that I would certainly recommend.

Note: When Belle is remembering things the sections are in italics so it is clear for the reader.

Afterthought: This is Jacqueline Sutherland’s second book. I haven’t read the first. I’ve heard that an author’s second book can seem to be disappointing in comparison if that’s so then all I can say is that The Coffin Club must have been really good.

Book: competition win.

Thank you to Anne at Radom Things Tours for my place on the book tour!
I adored The Coffin Club by this author, so I jumped at the chance to read this book! I really did have high hopes, as the Coffin Club gripped me with its interesting characters, and it is safe to say, Jacqueline did not disappoint me in the slightest.

I instantly connected with the book, which was no surprise to me and I was hooked from the very first page. I really did struggle to put this book back down and whilst reading, I could feel myself escaping from reality which was a very welcome feeling!

I liked how the throwbacks in this story were clear and easy to follow and didn’t disrupt the pace and flow of the story. I adored Jacqueline’s descriptions, she really did create vivid images in my head, I could imagine everything and loved some of the scenes she set! I really liked the way the author was also able to create an atmosphere but then instantly change her tone to lift it the heavy feeling, very cleverly done.

Around 20% through, I feel like I figured out the plot, not all of it, but the majority. This didn’t spoil the book for me at all though, despite knowing what could be ahead, I was still gripped and eager for it all to unfold!
As for the characters, I became invested in them all and actually felt quite guilty for liking certain characters, because I didn’t agree with what they were doing, so a very smart move from the author there.

There is just something about the way Jacqueline writes, I was absorbed from beginning to end, I loved the tense build up and the explosive ending, it really didn’t disappoint. I can not praise this book enough, another cracker and I can’t wait for what she has up her sleeve next!

I did enjoy this exploration of grief and loss in Angie Spoto’s debut novel. She has created a world in which the wealthy and the privileged (not necessarily both) have grief nurses. Distinguished by their white hair, these are people who can see and take others’ grief by means of touching their tokens – the receptacle for their grief. Such people – and they tend to be women – serve aristocratic families and we learn that grief nurses are passed down through families – they are inherited like valuable gems or old paintings

The Grief Nurse is a first person narrative by Lynx, a grief nurse in service to the Asters, a family who value their power and status, but whose old money is no longer as valuable as once it was. But ownership of a grief nurse is still a sign of the highest status and the Asters take every opportunity to put Lynx on display.

As the novel opens the Aster family are holding a wake for their eldest son on their island, Mount Sorcha and have invited the great and the good to attend. Lynx has taken away the grief of Mr and Mrs Aster so they are ‘Bright’ and keen to show off their lack of grief to their acquaintances. It is not just grief that Lynx can take; she also consumes dread and sorrow.

Angie Spoto’s world is full of beautifully named characters and is wonderfully atmospheric and replete with the most gothic imagery. Part murder mystery, part a meditation on the nature of grief, Spoto explores the nature of grief through her characters and contemplates the pros and cons of taking grief away.

Spoto’s descriptions of what happens to a grief nurse when she is taking away a grief and the representation of that action is very well done.

There were aspects I would have liked to see better explained – I did not wholly understand what a fader is, for example, but overall this was a beautifully written and fascinating book with a really innovative and impactful idea at its core.

Lynx is a terrific character. This is her coming of age story as she learns more about her power and how to use it as well as the impact that taking on so much grief has on her. Many of the characters are beautifully queer in a society where this is unexceptional.

Though this is an adult novel, it would not feel out of place in an older Y/A library.

Verdict: Well written with an interesting premise that captures the imagination, The

Jacqueline Sutherlands debut novel The Coffin Club was my absolute top read last year. So i was so excited to get a copy of her second book Twin Truths. I am so glad i did.

This is at times a dark read, i found myself trying to guess all the way through what the big reveal would be, i wasn’t disappointed there were a couple of thing’s that i have never heard of before but 😱.

So what’s the book about, it surroundsDavid and Belle and their twin daughters Kit and Jess. Belle is the one telling the story so you have to believed everything she says. Its Christmas time and the girls are due home from university for the holidays. But Kit brings a surprise with her a boy known as Ivo she is head over heals in live with him. He seems very polite until he has Belle on her own then the tension goes up a notch. Who is Ivo? What does he have on Belle that could destroy her whole family? How fat would you go to save your family?

Overall i liked the characters they are like your normal average family, early on in the marriage Belle slipped up, she had felt trapped and bored she needed a bit of excitement and she went out and got it. But it wasn’t long before she realised what she was doing was wrong she loved David and spent the next 20 odd years proving it.

Now she could lose it all, she needs to find out more because she will not let anyone take either if her girls. Right now Kit is saying she wants to ditch university and go travelling with Ivo.

Belle is a strong character. She swims in the sea early every morning of the year. It helps to keep her mind focused. But you could feel her vulnerability about her daughters coming off the page. Every mum who has raised their children and seen them leave for university or to live with a boyfriend/girlfriend/get married goes through empty nest syndrome as Jess and Kit are twins they both go off at the same time. It’s hard to deal with, the silence in the house. Obviously when they are coming home for a few weeks of the Christmas holidays the house will be alive again, Belle is so excited until she realises things have changed.

This is another great Psychological read by Jacqueline Sutherland, go grab yourself a copy its out now and if you haven’t read The Coffin Club then definitely grab a copy of that as well.

See if you see the twists coming.

A heart-pounding thriller that examines family and the measures some will take to protect their secrets and loved ones. After reading “Twin Truths”, I had to add “The Coffin Club” to my never-ending TBR list. This author is fantastic at suspense and twists!

But I must say, as a cover snob, this book deserves a vibrant cover that mirrors the darkness inside!

Belle can’t wait to finally have her twins all to herself after their first term at university. But when Kit unexpectedly brings back her boyfriend Ivo, Belle has to welcome him into their home. Charming and confident, Ivo soon wins over the family, but Belle can’t shake a strange feeling. What an excellent read. I thought it was going to be a family drama, which it was, but what I wasn’t prepared for was the creepy psychological drama. A great cast of characters, well fleshed, and a perfect mix of nice and not so nice! And speaking of not so nice Ivo made my skin crawl, his very presence made me extremely uncomfortable. This was well written, largely in the present interspersed with Belle’s memories of a short period in her life, before the twins were born, when she was finding her marriage boring, with a simple but very effective plot.

Briefly, Belle and David have been married for 30 years. They live near the coast allowing Belle to pursue her daily wild water swim, and David’s mother Morag lives in the basement of their home. As Christmas approaches they are happily waiting for their twin daughters, Kit and Jess, to come home from university for the holidays. However, at the last minute Kit asks to bring her boyfriend Ivo with her. From the minute he gets there everyone seems to like him, apart from Belle; he soon makes it clear that he knows a secret from her past.

I was completely engrossed by this book and read it in a day. It was a tense and exciting story which had me on the edge of my seat. A brilliant read with a shocking climax and an unexpected reveal, that put a whole different light on one of the characters. I loved it.

Oh my god, I loved this book! It's such a fun thriller. It's not just a total tension-building page-turner (I read it on a really long train journey, and I was so engrossed it felt like half an hour's ride!) The twists and turns were original, the setting of the wind-swept Suffolk coast really played into the plot, and the characters felt so real.

Here are some lines from the book that give a taste of it:

"I submerged, felt the panic rise and threaten, the grip of it at my chest, the roar of it in my ears that made all thought black. When my breathing calmed and my vision cleared, I struck out towards the dunes as hard as I could, smashing through the water with my arms, lungs bursting as I broke through the waves."

And...

"'Ivo...' I said before I could help myself. He stopped, eyebrows raised. 'Please call me Belle.'
He hesitated, confused. I tried to smile, but it trembled.
'It's just that nobody calls me Bella.'
'Sorry.' He grinned and nodded. 'My mistake. Night then.'
Turning, he plodded up the stairs to Kit. I waited until I heard the click of her bedroom door before I breathed out.
I put a hand out to the sink to steady myself. The cold of the enamel felt good against my hot hand. I squinted my eyes shut, trying to block out the things I no longer wanted to see.
Nobody calls me Bella. Not anymore."

How far will a mother go to hide a secret from her family?

Belle can’t wait to finally have her twins all to herself after their first term at university. But when Kit unexpectedly brings her new boyfriend Ivo back for Christmas, Belle has to welcome him into their home. Charming and confident, Ivo soon wins over the family, but Belle can't shake a strange feeling about him. And when Ivo reveals he knows a lot more about Belle than he first let on, she realises his intrusion into their lives could destroy the idyllic life she has built.

What does Ivo want from her?   And how far is Belle willing to go to protect her family - and herself?

This is the first book by Jacqueline Sutherland and it won’t be my last.

She had a great way of building the tension with Ivo - I wasn’t sure what he was going to do and what he was going to say throughout. Kit’s love for him was so blind she couldn’t see how he was behaving so abhorrently towards the rest of her family.

The flashbacks to Belle’s time with Felix were inherent to the story - you could see why Ivo behaved that way even if it was unacceptable.

A great domestic noir - one of my favourite genres and another book I devoured in less than 24 hours!

I was keen to read 'Twin Truths' as I had heard such great reviews about Jacqueline's first psychological thriller, The Coffin Club- and I was so glad I had the chance to read it. I was hooked and couldn't read it fast enough!

Belle has missed her university student daughters terribly and is desperate to have some quality time with her girls when Kit drops the bombshell that she wants to bring her new boyfriend Ivo with her. When the family find out he's an orphan, and that Kit is madly in love with him, how can they refuse him an invitation to join their family celebrations?

But there's more to the brooding Ivo than Kit is aware of. He is an over-familiar intense guest but Belle doesn't want to upset her daughter so keeps the peace. But as ties to her own past emerge, what will Belle do to keep her family safe?

The story is told entirely from Belle's point of view, with some interesting insights into what has happened in her past, those moments where her life could have gone one way or another which felt very true to life. Some of the twists were impossible to see coming and radically changed my view about what was to come further down the line.
I loved the sea-swimming element too, the power of water and nature to save or destroy you in a flash!

I toured The Coffin Club for Random Things Tours last year, so couldn't wait to start reading Twin Truths.

I started reading it late last night and I've just finished. If you've not read it, you're in for a dark delight that will have you whizzing through it's pages.

Empty nest syndrome has kicked in for Belle as her twin daughters have flown the nest and are now settling into university. Looking forward to reconnecting with her girls after their first term has finished, Belle is both shocked and disappointed when Kit welcomes new boyfriend Ivo into the family home.

Will her doubts about him be true? Was she the cause of what happened to his father?

Told in current day and in flashback form, Sutherland takes you on a whirlwind ride through the household of a family, that's on the verge of self destruct if Belle's dark secret comes to light?

The suspense was a killer and had me on tenterhooks throughout.

Sutherland is an author that's definitely one to keep on your psychological thriller scope.

Many thanks to Random Things Tours for my tour spot.

Despite the fact that Twin Truths belongs to the category of domestic thriller, which seldom works for me, I enjoyed the book.

Belle is waiting for her twin daughters to return home after their first term at their respective universities. They are set to celebrate Christmas and her birthday together and even the presence of her prickly mother-in-law seems more tolerable. However, things change when one of her girls, Kit, brings along her boyfriend Ivor. Ivor makes Belle uncomfortable right from the beginning and she soon realises the reason for it - he knows a secret from her past and is here to take revenge. Now Belle knows that she needs to take steps before her life and her family are torn apart.

Sutherland creates and manages to keep the atmosphere taut and tense as we see things unfold very quickly in Belle's life. The characters also come to life and at three hundred odd pages, the book is of the perfect length for the story to unfold at a brisk pace with enough information about the characters as they develop before us. Definitely recommended!

I read The Coffin Club last year and it was a really nice surprise to read such a great book, therefore I was so happy to be approved for the author’s second book. I can safely say that this one didn’t disappoint either! The story focuses on Belle who is excited to be reunited with her twin daughters on the Christmas break from university. Only one of her daughters brings back her new boyfriend, Ivo, but is he really as charming as he first comes across?

I ended up reading this in a day as I couldn’t put it down. The book was character driven, which I can sometimes become tired of, but on this occasion it worked really well. Although I worked out most of the twists it didn’t detract from the story and you slowly see the darkness and suspense build. I will be recommending everyone read this! Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read this early copy.

I read this in one sitting as I needed to know the ending.

I enjoyed the family dynamic and how the flashbacks slotted into the main story. I loved seeing how perspectives changed both across different people and over time. I also thought the twist was interesting as I didn't see it coming in the way it did.

I did find the way Belle reacted to Ivo quite odd given that she was an adult and he probably had no proof - I'd have definitely called him out earlier to show him up. However, Ivo himself was written well and I believed him and his anguish.

Loved the family drama running through this and will check out Jacqueline's other book.

Wow this book was absolutely brilliant. After reading Jacqueline's previous novel The Coffin Club I couldn't wait to start reading this one and my oh my it was good. I felt as though I got swept up into the story and didn't want to leave until the end. The story is all about Belle and her family. She has two daughters that are coming back from university but one of them brings her boyfriend back. He is a bit of a mystery and starts acting weird around Belle, does he know her secret? the story runs at a great pace that keeps you intrigued, I didn't guess what would happen and I was completely in shock over the last few pages. I couldn't predict the ending it was so good. This is an author that is going to be on my radar now.

We all know the saying that a mother will do anything for her family, but what if what she’s doing is hiding something from them? This book kicks off strong and doesn’t disappoint, with intrigue, mystery, twists and a very thrilling ride. I found myself completely hooked, from the very first chapter. Let’s just say, you can see why Sutherland’s work has so many accolades, as this book is phenomenal.
I loved the attention to detail, especially with the amount of thought and personality put in to each character. It really made the book, as you connected with people and found yourself desperate to know how the main character’s choices and actions would affect everyone.
Overall a brilliantly written book and one I thoroughly enjoyed.

Belle is so excited to have her twins come home until Kit rings saying that she is bringing her boyfriend Ivy. Everyone quickly warms up to Ivy, that is except for Belle who thinks he's hiding something and Belle has secrets of her own that she doesn't want revealed. A dark and addictive physcological thriller that I enjoyed. Belle is a over protective mother that I easily liked as I enjoyed her sense of humour. A quick and easy read.

This is the first book I’ve ready by this author. And I was NOT disappointed. It had me gripped from the first page to the last! I wish I could read it again for the first time! The twists were fantastic and I didn’t see them coming! I loved how it kept flitting between the present and Belle’s past.

Was written in such great detail, easy to follow and you get a real feel for the characters. I can’t wait to try more books by Jacqueline as this one did not disappoint

So, Twin Truths, this is Jacqueline's second thriller, and my gosh, she just keeps getting better and more sinister with every book! Twin Truths revolves around Belle, loving wife and mother. Belle is overjoyed when her twins Kit and Jess visit home after their first term at university. But in tow comes Ivo, Kit's confident, Lothario of a boyfriend. This is when the undertone of Twin Truths becomes deathly chilly and a hell of a lot more sinister - Does Ivo know more about Belle than he should?

The noises that escaped my mouth while reading the first handful of chapters alone echoed the shock, suspense, and chilling atmosphere, which immediately grabbed my attention. I was, from the get-go, captivated by Jacqueline's quick tension building, and became quickly submerged within this domestic drama - thriller.

Let's talk characters... I'm sold! What thriller-loving-bookworm doesn't live and breathe the underlying dysfunctionality and secrets of what first appears as a perfect family? Ivo quickly gets the reader on edge, while we plead with Belle to provide us with all the answers to our questions! The characters are built so well, even the side characters, because obviously Ivo and Belle are at the centre of this suspenseful square dance.

The storyline of Twin Truths is set over the Christmas holidays, starting from the 15th of December, leading up until the 23rd of December. With each dated chapter, the sea and air temperatures begin to dive to a rather frosty temp . Belle is a fresh water swimmer, and I love the mirroring of the home temperature feeling to the sea. These little entwining are perfection! Clasped together with the injections of 'memory chapters', I became so swept away by Twin Truths

Belle has a good life despite empty nest syndrome with her daughters at university. When one of them brings home her mysterious new boyfriend, Ivo, it seems there’s more to him than meets the eye.
This was a really engaging and atmospheric read. I enjoyed the writing style immensely. Thank you to the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

This is a book that will keep you up all night as it is a book that you just cannot walk away from until it is finished. The suspense is just crazy. I stayed up all night just to find out if Bella wins the day.
You must buy this book and have the best roller-coaster ride of a book that I had read this year.

The topics explored in this were interesting but nothing revolutionary. It’s one of those books where the ramifications of an affair and secrets from many years ago have consequences and ripples years later that are explored. The ending got a bit dramatic for me and I didn’t love the very end. I kept thinking just tell the truth and yet I understood the complexity of the situation.

This gets all the stars from me!!!! I LOVED this book. So different from anything I’ve read before. I truly felt this book deeply from beginning to end. I could hardly put it down. It was so suspenseful in many different ways. I don’t want to say too much, but you really need to read this one. So far it’s the best one I’ve read this year. I can’t recommend it enough!

🎧 This is somewhere between 3.5 or 4 for me. Decent twists, pretty good pace, the antagonist was just as annoying as he was menacing. The ending was explosive enough to not feel disappointed by the wait.
