Clara's Crusade

Rate this book
Clara was angrier than she’d ever been before. But even her fury took second place to her deep frustration.

They’d murdered her first husband as a warning to the others. Then six months later, after she’d convinced her second husband to join her crusade against the town’s corruption, he’d been shot in the head to put an end to her editorials.

They thought she’d pack up and leave Cottonwood, but she refused to give up or back down. Two weeks ago, she’d wired the Arizona territorial governor in Prescott, hoping he would send help. But now, those hopes were gone. She hadn’t even received a telegraphed dismissal of her request.

Adding to her frustration was her printer’s refusal to let her continue her crusade. If she’d been able to set type and use the printing press, she could still write her accusatory editorials.

She felt trapped and her newspaper’s circulation was less than half of what it had been just two weeks earlier. As she stared at the cold steel printing press, Clara wished she knew how to use a gun. It may be the only way she could continue the fight as no
one else seemed to care and there was no help on the way.

Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.

The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.

As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.

My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"

Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.

I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)

"And what did the doctor say?"

"I'll ask him when we get back."

"Yes, you will."

I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.

Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.

So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.

The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.

Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.

Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.

Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.

They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.

It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.

They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.

A very heartwarming and definitely heartwarming, series of how to tame a wicked town!

Never read a Petit book that wasn't a five star masterpiece, and this compassionately motivated series of ongoing gunfighting adventures is most definitely five stars worthy! A fast moving series of ongoing excursions that will definitely titilate anyone's undivided attention, as a stranger comes to town identifying himself as a writer of fictional characters, but proves himself to be someone entirely different!
Being an avid follower of Me. Petit, whose storylines always fulfills anyone's desired expectations, I assure you that this compelling series of ongoing western folklore adventures will pacify anyone's desired expectations! Too, the character selections were outstandingly portrayed in their respective roles, from beginning to end!
No problem recommending this heartwarming series of one entertaining revelation after the other, and you will find yourselves completely mesmerized from beginning to end! No slowdowns in this outstanding descriptive renditions of unending gunfighting adventures! You non-western readers will definitely enjoy following these dedicated individuals in their quest for justice to those responsible for their wrong doings!!!😃

And on and on and on .........

Most disappointed in this book. I believe I have read every one of Mr Petit's books over the past several years. I have really enjoyed most of them.
But you started losing me in the Joe Beck series and Clara's Crusade is even worse.
To begin, this is one of the worst books I've read regarding grammar. It is filled with misspelled words, wrong words, missing words, sentences that don't make sense. It's difficult reading something like that.
On and on and on.....your books have gotten too wordy, too much repetition, too much nonsensical statements. You mentioned at the closing of this book you expected about 70,000 words. That would have made for a much better book. Same thing in the Joe Beck series.
Also the past few books you have become more explicit sexually and that is not needed in the genre of books you write.
As I said to begin, I think I've read every one of your books.........but I believe I won't read another.......
This is the very first bad review I've done on Mr Petit's books......
Return to the way you used to write.

Likeable hero, admirable heroine

Another interesting and engaging read by C.J. Petit. One thing that becomes very clear in this story is the role of luck in the lives and survival of frontier law men. The ultimate battles between the good and bad people often comes down to happenstance, who sees who coming into their view, the comparative accuracy of their firearms, the role of trees and rocks in their environment, and the training and personality of their horses. I do think this particular story could have been well told with fewer words; the additional battles became tedious at times. However, I never felt that the author was simply adding padding to make a longer book. Mister Petit writes as if his story is pulling him along and the reader can always move ahead more quickly in her or his reading. The additional detail is comfortable for a reader who wants to live the story.

5STARS, WESTERN DRAMA, ACTION & LOVE

C.J. Petit earned all 5 STARS he received for this amazing western tale of a newspaper woman's plight of 2 murdered husbands by a Sheriff's Deputy & the whole town now being under the control of the brutal crooked Sheriff, his 3 Deputies & a thief of a banker, Mayor. These 5 men had all the other men in the town frightened & were charging them ridiculous amounts for taxes & town services; it was just like highway robbery, almost you just knew the robbers.
A great BLURB is provided.

Clara sends a telegram to the governor's office requesting assistance for both the town & herself. She was now under threat as well as her, "The Canyon Caller" newspaper.

Lin Walker a US Marshall, but also an author of

Fresh story line

I enjoyed book for one it did have 2main characters, but one was male and the other was a female. They both had two different characters but the minute that they see each other there is a serious attraction.

It was a good book with a change of pace for a minute.

I always enjoy Mr. Petit's books there are a breath of fresh air for me.

I hope there are many more to come.
Thank you for your commitment to writing.
I was just diagnosed with stage 3 cancer and starting chemo so I look forward to as many of your books as possible and of course I own every book you have written.

Thank you!

Crusade indeed

This is a western story set in the late 1800's in the state of Arizona. The heat of the desert keeps everyone in a moist body condition. There are many bad guys to capture and defend yourself against. A marshal to collect the bad guys and try to protect the good people of the town that is in their control. The longer the story goes the more characters are introduced, some good, some bad. I'm the end everything turns out fine. Thanks for all the entertainment..

Another Awesome book from beginning to end

Have read all his books, and find all the different characters in his books with similar personality traits. Good verses evil with a touch of romance. But at the same time a different and unique story. Love his books which reminds me of how difficult life was in the 1800's and how important law and order was then and now. One of my favorite authors.

Another great C J Petit book!

Clara lost two husbands by the murdering hands of the city's wicked sheriff because of her crusade in The Canyon Caller newspaper articles of the Mayor's and sheriff office corruption. She contacted two U S Marshall offices and never received a reply. Then the tall friendly Lin Walker, a writer researching material for his next book, arrives and takes special note of Clara's dilemma. Could there be more to Lin Walker than he claimed?

I have read all o f CJ Petit’s books. All leadership is this story was crooked—-the Sheriff, his deputies and the bank president. From extortion to killing. All the citizens were afraid except the female newspaper owner whose husbands (2) they killed. She sent a letter to the state governor who sent in the USMarshalls. Again, a great read which I could not put down.

Another fantastic book by the author!!

The author never ceases to amaze me! I like how he includes mystery, dangers of the old west, the toil and struggles, victories both large and small that occur in the lives of the colorful characters in each book. The terrain, location of events, technical descriptions of guns, results from shootings and love are intriguing. Thanks for another fabulous book!!

Another excellent book by C. J Petit. Clara owns a newspaper and has dedicated her energies to calling out the corruption in her town. She is threatened by all who want to silence her voice. As the danger increased, she a telegraph to the governor but did not receive a response. A handsome stranger arrives and befriends her despite increased threats to her and to him. Lin pays attention to Clara and offers to help her. Together they leave the town and eliminate the men sent to kill them both. Lin reveals himself that he is both a well known author but also an unpaid deputy US Marshall. The relationship between Clara and Lin increases as the threat from those who have been controlling the town also increases. The romance between Clara and Lin continues to grow and together they plan to clean up the town by eliminating the sheriff and his cronies. The story concludes with Clara and Lin restoring the town as they head to San Francisco where he writes about his experience and she publishes articles about women's suffrage. C.J. writes with humor throughout and a deep love between the leading characters. It is a joy to read his many books.

Clara’s Crusade

As usual, your writing style always keeps the reader engaged until the very end
of the story. I love the characters and how their lives inter-connect.
Thank you also for the epilogue which helps to bring a nice ending to your stories. I’m a big fan of westerns. Keep up the great writing.

Great

This is another one of CJ’s fantastic books. He is the one of the most innovative authors. I think I’ve ever read he can carry on a book where a pastor tend to bring in many other things that add to it. Sometimes when you think you have reached the end, there’s much more to go he can hold your attention like no other looking forward to the next one.

Another wonderful C.J.Petit Novel

As I finished rereading Clare's Crusade for the third or fourth time I was surprised that I had not done a review which I really enjoy doing and telling everyone how wonderful they all are. I wish there was a higher rating than 5 stars because they all deserve it.

The town's cryer

Clara wrote the towns newspaper. When she told what was happening in her town, it was becoming dangerous. After her husband's death, would they come for her? She hoped the law would come.

Great story

I love this author's stories. As a firearms historian, I find it annoying when a writer chooses firearms inappropriate to the time period or just plain stupid because they are incorrect or just plain wrong.

Too much time spent on romance

This is a good story but Petit. Spends too much time with the flirting and daydreaming and it messes up the story line. That is why I can't give the book 5 stars

I loved the character of Clara. She was so feisty. Lin's character was a good one also but I wish there had been a bit more about Sam Beckett and Ellen. As always I love to read Mr. Petit.
