Winner in the Romance Paranormal/Supernatural category of The 2022 American Fiction Awards
None of it was supposed to be real. It was just a fantasy, a dream, a fairy-tale.
Skylar was a Montgomery and with that came power and prestige among the wealthy in Charlotte, North Carolina. From the outside looking in, she had it all, the perfect life. For Skylar, being a Montgomery, a socialite, was not who she wanted to be. Skylar was different, she was weird and a bit of a dreamer. For as long as she could remember, she had an obsession with the supernatural world. Vampires were her favorite of all the supernatural creatures and she could not get enough of them. She read almost every book, watched every movie, and even wished they were real because she had dreams of becoming one. On the annual Montgomery Family Vacation, Skylar's world was turned upside down. Her life was further changed the moment she laid eyes on him. He was the most intriguing and striking man that she had ever seen. In one night, he would change Skylar's world forever.
Kairo was in need of a change. After living for over 300 years and always staying one step ahead of the Council of Truth Seekers, a vigilante group whose sole mission in life was to kill all supernaturals. Kairo needed a new scene away from it all. Along his travels, he heard that Charlotte was becoming an epicenter of fun. It was a city full of life and the perfect place for a vampire to hunt without the watchful eye of the Council. From the moment that Kairo stepped foot in Charlotte things were very different for him. The city made every fiber of his being come alive with an energy unlike anything that he had ever known. Kairo would find the source of that energy no matter what it cost him and when he did, his world would change forever.
Rating: 3 Stars!! Review: Thank you to Delphine for the FREE COPY with Goodies as part of The Book Tour with Travelling Page Tours last month.
This was my first time reading a Dark Romance Fantasy by Delphine so i wasnt sure what to expect but i have to say i liked this one for the most part, i just wish Chapters 1-8 werent so slow starting.
This book reminded me alot of an Adult Version of True Blood, Vampire Diares, Vampire Academy and Twilight tho sadly it was too dark for me.
The Characters were fun and interesting to read about. I really felt for Skylar especially when Kairo kept torturing her to the extent that she was in so much Pain which made me feel bad for her.
The Setting was beautifully described which made me feel like i was actually in North Carolina while reading, especially when the scenery was described since i have family that lives in NC.
Overall an OK Dark Romance Paranormal Fantasy but just wasnt for me!! I will read more by Delphine in the future i just hope the first 8 Chapters arents as slow as this one was.
For starters, I believe that the premise of the story could be a fun and interesting series for fans of dark romance.
However…..
The book could severely benefit from an editor. As it is a debut novel, I’m sure the author did not have access to an experienced editor, but even allowing some friends to review and notate errors would have made this read so much better. The run-on sentences, grammatical errors, and spelling issues were painful. Switching from first to third to second person with no context or warning pulls you immediately out of the story. The dialogue was clunky and felt forced. This felt like a first or .5 draft of a fan-fiction piece rather than a fully realized novel.
On a side note: when did we become scared to use anatomical verbiage? A few examples of this that made me physically cringe were; pink panther, nibbles (nipples), and vertical smile.
Thank you @delphinemcclelland and @travelling.pages.tours for my #giftedbook and spot on the tour.
While this book is not my normal genre I am glad I ventured out. This book is full of angst, magnetism, and sexual tension. This debut draws you in immediately and keeps you engaged until the end. The characters are well developed and complex. I enjoyed the way the author intertwined Skylar and Kairo.
Skylar is a strong female lead obsessed with all things supernatural, especially vampires. Kairo is a 300 year old vampire looking for trouble. The chemistry between these is palpable and gives me the tingles. This book is dark and twisted in all the right ways. I look forward to reading more from this author!
I love books about vampires and other fantasy creatures and was excited to read this one. Unfortunately, it seems this story was not for me. Delphine keeps jumping from one POV to another and it’s a little hard to keep up sometimes. I feel that at times, the explanations of their emotions and thoughts went on a little too much or were repeated a few times in different ways and I’d get bored and skip parts.
I was interested to know what Skylar was uncovering at the morgue and how the whole story was going to unfold. I usually enjoy vampire stories but this one is very gory and I didn’t enjoy reading those parts of the story. If you enjoyed Twilight, I’m not sure that you’ll enjoy this book. The actual storyline was interesting though and I enjoyed seeing what was going to happen between Skylar and Kairo.
I liked that Skylar was a strong female character and that she didn’t break when Kairo tortured her. I think it is fitting that she’s a witch. The dialogue was easy to follow when you knew who was talking. The author doesn’t use unnecessarily large words. I liked that Skylar’s friend, Angelina, was so loyal to her even through all the weirdness. I didn’t like Malachi or Kairo because of their violence. I also wasn’t crazy about Dimitri either. He couldn’t take no for an answer which showed a lack of respect for Skylar.
This is apparently a standalone book but the book ended on a cliffhanger and this irritated me because now we don’t know what happens next. I do not see anywhere that this is a series. (UPDATE: After doing the author interview I see that this is going to be a series and that the author is working on book two currently.) There are grammar and spelling mistakes that I picked up throughout the book and that distracted me a bit but it may not be that distracting to normal readers.
People who like the more violent vampire books with a little bit of bondage thrown in will probably enjoy reading this book.
Dark Obsessions is a thriller/ horror/ vampire novel written by debut author Delphine McClelland. This book has laid the groundwork for at least a book two so I hope to see that coming soon! Fast paced with tons of thrills- this one sucks you right in.
Everyone loves a good love story and when it’s mixed with a bit of supernatural and adult content, but Dark Obsessions becomes a page-turner. A word of advice to male readers, though, the book is heavily skewed toward female readers on the prowl for that perfectly coiffed, handsome immortal with a taste for the crimson. With the proliferation of all-things-vampire in the media—movies, books, television, the book disperses a significant number of the legends sustained by Hollywood kinds who had not gotten their homework done. Dark Obsession goes against the grain, and this story's protagonist is much more than what meets the eye.
Kairo VanDoren a three-hundred-year-old vampire was the handsome and mysterious neighbor that they would be dying to meet. He was drawn to Charlotte, North Carolina and this supernatural pull resulted in him acquiring a lakeside property on Lake Wylie. Determined to find out what drew him to Charlotte, Kairo put down roots against the advice of his creator the ruthless, human-hating Malachi. After ‘purchasing’ the most popular nightclub, Kairo and Malachi renovated the venue to attract an unsuspecting crowd that would become playthings - mice to be fed on. The game of cat and mouse was one of torture, BDSM, and pain, where the only person satiated, was the cat - Kairo, who delighted in the screams and fear of his little mice.
Skylar Montgomery, a rich socialite also has a supernatural experience and feels the same electrifying pull as Kairo. She made many attempts to ignore the energy she felt “but it was strong and had a mind of its own.” Skylar had an obsession with the supernatural world and set out on a mission to uncover hidden family secrets. The plot continues on rapidly and the author’s presentation succeeds in enticing the reader into taking the chance of flirting with the dark side. The events that led up to Kairo and Sklyar's meetup will have readers fully committed to the plot. The author’s true masterstroke, though, is the way he expands the sexual appeal of vampires and the vivid description of their gratification. The love and sex scenes are endearing, dark, sensual, and sultry.
Dark Obsessions is reminiscent of erotic novels like Fifty Shades of Grey that, according to some, depict unconventional sex as exploitative. The story concludes leaving this reader yearning for more, but in the end, love was more powerful.
Well more like 3.75 stars. Kairo, a 300 year old vampire is the epitome of bad boy sex appeal mixed with class and money. Skylar is from a well established southern family with generational wealth and power in the community. She is also a medical examiner who is fascinated with the paranormal and supernatural beings even if she believes them to be fictional. Wishing that the fantasy was real, well it got a little too real for her very quickly. I did find Malachi’s hurt fueled hatred of humanity to be a bit much, forcing your ideals onto others makes me cringe. The use of medieval torture methods that detailed was a bit difficult to get through, even as someone who is a true crime murderino. The psychological aspect of serial killers has always been a macabre fascination. But I think in this case it’s knowing how these were real methods and devices that were overwhelmingly used against women who didn’t conform to a man’s expectations that really made it hit different. The focus on energies and the effect everything around us has on it was a nice touch. The bond they share is an interesting spin on soulmates with them feeling it before even meeting. I really liked the vision of her ancestor and that Skylar wants to learn about her heritage and she wants to know why has been lied to over the course of her entire life. We love an inquisitive queen.
🫀Omg!! Goshh! This book is everything I needed this valentines week, this one truly has my heart, I have a soft corner for supernatural or vampire romances because I feel the way they protect their women is so fancy and like everything, this book had everything I was seeking for thought the back drop was definitely unique and unexpected, I loved how the book turned and every page brought something new!
It felt like I’m watching a movie, I loved her character more than his, she is just so intense and passionate and love how she gets involved into the things she truly loved whether it her passion for the breed or he deadly obsession, she is not afraid of the dark, the bad or the unknown.
It’s a medium to fast paced read that will surely turn the readers head and I truly engaged with it till the very end.
It’s a blend of romance, fantasy, supernatural elements and so much of unexpected twists that add so well to the story, it’s a book that’s filled with a bit of suspense and so much of warmth and intensity, definitely something that should be missed, go for it!
Skylar Montgomery comes from a powerful family. Her love for the supernatural and vampires has made her an outcast with her family. A trip to New Orleans has changed something within her that she can’t explain.
Kairo is a 300 year old vampire. He is trying to stay ahead of the Council of Truth Seekers (mission is to kill all supernaturals). Kairo lands in Charlotte, North Carolina where he feels alive for the first time in a long time.
My thoughts:
This is only my second vampire book. Overall, I enjoyed Dark Obsessions and the vibe of the book.
I enjoyed Skylar and Kairo’s character even thought Kairo’s torture chamber being described on page was a bit much. It worked for the book but was described in detail how they worked on a victim. I didn’t care for Dimitri (in love with Skylar) nor Malachi (turned and taught Kairo).
The connection between Skylar and Kairo is built even before they meet. It is strong and you can feel it through the pages.
I will definitely try more by Delphine McClelland.
Thank you Delphine McClelland and Travelling.Pages.Tours for the complimentary copy of Dark Obsessions.
I met the author of this book at an event in Charlotte and she was super sweet and super passionate about her book!!!
Review:
I thought the book was definitely interesting, I love the idea of black vampires and witches and I loved that is based in my home state in a city that I visit often. Kairo, Malachi, and Skylar were interesting characters, I just wished they were fleshed out a little more. I would also say to me this was a slow burn because Kairo and Skylar didn’t really interact until chapter 16 in book with 25 chapters.
One of the other things that I believe took me out of truly out of the zone while I was reading was the pov switches in the middle of paragraph. I couldn’t tell whether this was supposed to be in first person or third person pov because in a chapter that I thought was from one characters pov, I would get other characters thoughts. So that was a little jarring!
This book has so much potential and I think people should read it. It definitely left off on a cliff hanger and I would be interested to see what happens next!
Dark obsessions is a paranormal romance novel. Skyler is a Montgomery, and with that name, she has the life everyone seeks. Wealth, prestige, and power. As an accomplished woman, she has an obsession with vampire life. Skyler is young and works as a Medical Examiner in Charlotte. Things change for her when she goes on vacation to New Orleans. The premise grabs your attention from the start. The author displays a narrative that is intriguing and intense throughout. The added romance and the paranormal elements bring the story together. It is descriptive and well-written.
Skyler’s personality and character pull the story together. As a female protagonist, she becomes the source of it all, and with Kairo, her newfound love, the duo prompts an unforgettable tale.
Dark Obsessions has a novel approach to the vampire world, and it’s a tale that will make you wonder at the end.
I recommend this book to thriller paranormal fans and vampire lovers.
I love reading paranormal fiction stories. Recently I got my hands on Delphine McClelland's "Dark Obsessions".
Twenty-six-year old Skylar Montgomery is the female protagonist of the story. Skylar is different from her family. She has an obsession with the supernatural world and vampire lore. Her world turned upside down when she was on vacation in New Orleans.
Another main character of the story, Kairo VanDoren is a three-hundred-year old vampire. The women see him as a sexy, young and single guy. For Kairo, all women were of his type because they all contained something that he wanted. Read this gripping story to know what will happen when he meets Skylar.
The plot of the story is written well. I enjoyed every bit of this story. The characters are written well by the author. Both Skylar and Kairo are my favorites. The cover photo of the book is nice and the title is suitable. Those who enjoy paranormal fiction should read this one for sure.
Dark Obsessions is a supernatural novel written by Delphine Mcclelland. It follows the story of Kairo, a 300 years old vampire who just finished building a house of torture. Not the usual kind of vampire, he feels intrigued by women, awakening feelings inside him that go beyond the need for blood. On the other side, Skylar Montgomery is bored, she doesn´t fit in the life she's living. After meeting Kairo, she will never be the same.
This is not the typical obscure vampire book, even though it has dark scenes, I would say it is more similar to Twilight. I definitely enjoy this reading and I recommend it to people looking for a relaxing reading with a complex love story between two intriguing odd characters, even though one is a vampire.
Fighting a foe hellbent on, destroying all of your kind, is a serious undertaking. For Kairo it is life or death. Moving to Charlotte North Carolina Kairo finds a place that calls to his very being and a love that makes his soul sing. Enter the world of Kairo and Skylar as they navigate the world of Charlotte , North Carolina, surrendering to the call of The Supernatural High.
I am not one for all the torture stuff so this was not my happy place dark romance is one thing, but I could have done without all the torture and the multiple points of view was another thing that got to me, I felt like the author never got the flow of the story right.
Thanks, @delphinemcclelland and @travelling.pages.tour
Underneath all the dark & sometimes gruesome scenes, this is a love story. An interesting love story b/w a vampire & a human…Sounds like Twilight right? You’d be completely wrong. While it does have some similarities to it this is a completely different love story. It’s a good read. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know these characters, falling in love with some, completely disliking others. The thrill of the read was in its complexities. It takes you on a crazy ride as the characters get to realize who they are to one another & what it all entails. The book is open ended & I can’t wait to see what is in store for these characters in the future. Delphine McClelland has made a new reader & I will definitely be reading her more.
Supernatural stories often catch my eye, and this was not the exception. “Dark Obsessions” captured my curiosity by the sublime cover and the well thought title. I’ve to confess that its originality was the best part! Already in the first pages, I felt trapped and I needed to know more. The characters are described in an intelligent and rich way and it’s easy to recognize their strengths and weaknesses. It was really hard to put the book down, I wanted to keep on reading it. The writer's narrative is superb as she drives the reader to devour the story in a couple of sittings making it a real page-turner.
Dark Obsessions is a wonderful paranormal romance by author Delphine McClelland and it has an uncomplex but loaded-with-action plot.
The storyline revolves around a thirty-year-old vampire, but this does not mean the story gets dark as vampire tales usually are. In this opportunity, Kairo has inner desires, different from those of typical vampires.
What I would like to highlight about this tale is the way in which the author was able to mingle the life of a character who belongs to a normal uptown family and that of a vampire who comes into the scene. The chapters then become intriguing and the characters evolve to such a point that they come across as being realistic and intense.
This book sucks you in, from the moment I picked up the book I did not want to put it down. This book leaves room for a second book and I cannot wait to continue on this adventure and read more about Skylar and Kairo. If you love anything supernatural with some thrill. I highly recommend you check out this book. It does not disappoint.
I love so many things about it, especially Skylar’s character and development. I also had not read a thriller with vampires in so long!!! pretty descriptive and I liked that too!
However, friends this is very very descriptive so proceed with caution
Dark Obsessions is a well developed book. It was a page turner. The connection between Kairo and Skylar is the perfect example of soulmate. The good vs evil theme is powerful and vividly understood. The end is a cliffhanger and left me wanting more! I hope a sequel comes out soon!
