My rules are simple; allow me to list them for you.
Rule one: no matter how perfectly adorable Bianca Jane Taylor is, do not ogle her.
Rule two: no matter how hard I fall in love with her, never let her know.
It should be simple, but if being a black autistic in a world built for white neurotypicals proves anything, nothing is as simple as it should be. Your tone of voice is never quite right. Your expressions are never exactly welcoming. And the girl you like happens to be asexual and aromantic.
Life isn’t fair, and it doesn’t make sense.
When Bianca is invited to Florida for a family reunion, the idea of my tiny, beloved boss leaving me for three weeks propels me into inviting myself along.
It’s just a trip.
Spending weeks living together while navigating her less-than-wonderful family is not going to reveal my secret. I won’t let it. Because I know the facts.
Loving her is selfish, and I have the list of reasons to prove it.
Even so, I can’t stop.
Could Have Been Romantic is a laugh-out-loud, friends-to-lovers, closed-door romcom with neurodivergent characters, forced proximity, and a unique special interest in one another. Swoonfully sweet and heart-melting.
PLEASE READ the Author’s Note and Trigger Warning located at the after the dedication.
Camilla Evergreen is an alias of USA Today bestselling author Anne Stryker. Originally intended as a dumping ground for all things lacking fantasy, Camilla/Anne came to the shocking discovery that writing sarcastic, chaotic romcoms full of quippy heroines and adoring heroes has a kick to it.
Camilla/Anne’s neurodivergent tendencies leave her hyperfocused on writing sweet and sassy romances from dawn till dusk and lending whatever her current creative obsessions are to her characters. From arranged marriages to falling for the boss, there’s lots of love to go around.
Bianca is a very busy young woman. She maintains a website that changes constantly with things she makes with her own two hands and with love.
Drew is Bianca’s assistant for the last five years. He keeps things organized for her and always knows where she left her phone. Drew is autistic and is the only person who realizes that Bianca is too.
When Bianca is forced by her mother to travel to Florida for a family event, Drew insists on going. Not only because he can’t imagine three weeks without her, but because he’s afraid to leave her alone without his assistance.
This is a beautiful romance about two people who never thought they would have it for themselves, and so what if they define romance a little differently from everyone else? Five stars of sweetness.
There are no words that can fully encompass the beauty of this book. I’ve read multiple books by this author but wanted to go back and read some of her older books, and I am so glad I did. I don’t think any other author could have done this story justice. It is absolutely beautiful and heart wrenching. I cried so many tears while reading but my heart is so full. Love means so much more than what modern media likes to make it out to be. And Bianca and Drew have more love for each other than so many married couples. I hope more people read this book so they can learn how to be more accepting and truly understand love.
Knowing a new adult who is undiagnosed but quite clearly neurodivergent, this book is so completely relatable on so many levels. I loved that these two so fully accepted themselves and one another while wrestling with the mistreatment of a world that refuses to understand them. Nothing about this book made them caricatures or stereotypes—Bianca and Drew are individuals with their own distinct neurodivergences, personalities, interests, hyperfixations, needs, desires, ways of perceiving the world, and even love languages. They’re fully developed humans, and these days that’s hard to find in the sea of tropes.
The way the author so beautifully challenged society’s constructs for “romance” and love, while proving over and over again how possible (and plausible) it is for two people to find and embrace love without sexuality being the end game? Spot. On.
Refreshing and original, this author keeps impressing me with her ability to write characters completely out of the box and onto the page.
*insert another round of unintelligible screaming*
This is a story that I did not know my heart needed. I am very much a romantic sap. I am neurodivergent (OCD, anxiety/depression). The way this author handles the beautiful complexities of being neurodivergent (autism, asexual, aromantic, in this case) will always astound me because it gives you the distinct feeling of being fully seen.
I love Bianca and Drew’s relationship, how they find themselves through each other, and the acceptance they find in that.
I adore the way she focuses on the friendship first in their relationship. I fell very hard romantically for my husband very fast, but he is my very best friend. I really enjoyed seeing that type of friendship play out between these two. Because at the end of the day, my soul finds peace in the kind of lasting love that comes from loving your best friend.
And witnessing Drew lay into Bianca’s family on her behalf… priceless. Also, I do appreciate Marissa’s redeeming qualities.
"Bianca Jane Taylor is asexual and aromantic." - Drew
Drew's life has not been an easy one navigating through. Being a handsomely, black, autistic male has presented more challenges than anything. Luckily, he has a list for that. Lists help to make everything right and help him to understand the world and the people in it.
Only one person in particular requires so many lists he could start a book series! Bianca Jane Taylor is everything to Drew, but he cannot tell her the truth. Not wanting to make her uncomfortable or remember past traumas. So, he will keep things hidden best he can. . .in a small car. . .with his small boss. . .alone together. This trip to Florida is going to be more trying than just simply being surrounded by new things!
"Drew Aston Rowe is the best assistant in the whole wide world." - Bianca
This book. . .this book right here. . .had me crying so many tears! Whether they were happy tears, realization tears, or sad tears. Camilla out did herself with this masterpiece! By NO means does this imply the other books in the series are not phenomenal. The other books are so good and with their own aesthetics. This series can be read as standalones since each book is about a different couple. There are just hints of previous characters sprinkled within.
"I know what's wrong with me, but that doesn't automatically fix things all the time. I still get tangled up in meaningless stuff. I wish these parts were things I could just grow out of, but I can't." - Drew
This is not your typical romcom novel! Drew's learning to navigate through his adult life coming to terms and fully realizing his autism. Being Neurodivergent and easily becoming sensory overloaded. He has had a rough start in life, but Bianca breathed a new breath into him. With her he can face the world and the quips ignorant people make.
I absolutely loved Drew! Respectfully and with permission I would give him a big hug! I could relate to many of his struggles, I am not fully on the spectrum, but I am on it. I completely get working retail and being overwhelmed and stressed out. Something I really loved about Drew and picked up on instantly, sorry if it is a spoiler, I just get so giggly about it. Yes, my Non-Binary self gets giggly about things! Drew can see colors in sounds!
I was grinning from ear to ear reading it and then the characters flat out stating it later. I also loved how Camilla described the colors Drew saw and what they interpreted as to him! Drew is everything! I just want to continue going on about him, but I do not want to spoil anything or first time experiencing his character!
Bianca. . .her and I could go on for HOURS about family and wanting to "unfamily" several people. There were several people and one in particular who just kept projecting onto Bianca. A family reunion is not what it's cracked up to be. (Just from reading the book and my personal experiences, not stating all families are this way by any means!)
It's difficult when you are the target for someone's insecurities and unhealed wounds. Voicing things that they should honestly be doing standing in front of a mirror. We don't need a spouse in our lives to feel whole or happy. Children may be an immense blessing for some but others it is not. It is a terrifying reality that just isn't for them. You may be feeling miserable and lonely, but it does not mean someone else who is "alone" feels the same.
Bianca has had to deal with a lot growing up and into adulthood. Being Aro/Ace has taken a minute to come to terms with. And the knowledge that she will never see romance and sex as an appealing thing. But Bianca moves forward with her life and shows love to those who truly deserve it! I loved that Bianca enjoys romance novels with some spice and how she views them from an Ace perspective!
Again, this book is not your typical romance novel, so it's difficult to really state tropes. Camilla writes very clean romances with no language or spice scenes. This one had so much romance in it, and I was in love with ALL of it. Romance doesn't just mean hoping into the sheets and that's it. No! It includes so much more, and Camilla nailed ALL of it.
With this read the author did include trigger warnings for the book. Dealing with heavier subjects and backgrounds. Camilla did an excellent job relaying it and writing it out! Even mentioned some of the things the characters experienced were things she dealt with personally. I am going to need this book in physical form as soon as I can! Love this couple so much and I could keep going on about this book. I cannot wait for the next couple Camilla has written about!
"It takes a lot more effort to plan a three-week trip than it does to show up with a giant bundle of generic flowers." - Drew
Enjoy this book with all the non-typical romance, multiple POVs, and the pulling of heart strings! Don't forget to give the author some stars!
I tried reading this a few days ago, but the first chapter wasn’t enticing me in so I set it aside for something else. I am glad I decided to go back and try again.
This is the third installment in the Could Have Been Sweet series and I think it’s my favorite so far- but then I do get to slip into Louis’s story today, so who knows what sweetness awaits me! But hey, let’s not walk away from the charm of Bianca and Drew just yet.
He’s austistic, she’s aromantic. Doesn’t exactly sizzle from that description alone, does it? But secretly they both love each other in their own way… I worried about the approaching end for this one as Bianca is bullied by her own family about how she sees herself. From the sounds of it she is on the spectrum somewhere, but Al her family sees is someone who is too old to have tantrums or shut down and will definitely grow out of this “childish” phase of insisting she isn’t interested in a traditional marriage and all that involves.
I should have known better, as Ms Evergreen has made her career out of beloved characters who are different, so why should she betray one now?
As best friends Bianca and Drew are so good for one another, but when circumstances push their boundaries, they grow into a relationship so deeply rewarding that you will want to protect them from the cruelties of the world. It’s not the easiest path being divergent in any way, shape or form when bullies seem to sniff out those perceived to be different. Thank you, Ms Evergreen for allowing this couple to stand on their own two feet and built something that works best for them.
Not like I was expecting at all, blew my mind, couldn’t put it down
This book was really weird, really strange. Not at all what I was expecting. However I could not put it down. Like literally stay up all night can’t stop reading addicted to it. It was just so different to read those points of view from autistic and aro ae. I have no idea how accurate it was written but it was very interesting and made me just want to Google the themes brought up in the book that those type of people face. Most importantly I feel like the life lesson that stayed with me is to take people at their word and to not push your own agenda, aspirations or hopes for them on them. Basically all coming down to respecting people. I literally feel like this has helped me understand people in such a different way. For having a non-romantic type leading the story, this sweet romance comedy was very funny and romantic in it’s own way. No bodily fluids were exchanged but I swear I could feel the electrified effects of touch more just from reading this. If you’re looking for something out of the norm that is sweet, clean, has a bit of drama, will pull at your heart strings, and has a really satisfying ending then I would say give this book a try. Rating: PG, clean, physical content is more about touch than kissing
How would you describe a book about 2 people who are still struggling to find their place in the world when they barely fit into the lives of those around them. They don’t feel the way that others feel and that’s ok because in their own way they knew how to love and to love big. They were content to just be themselves in a world that is constantly changing the goal post.
I loved Bianca’s term for Drew, she wanted him to be her husfriend, committed to each other forever but not sure she could be intimate beyond kissing and holding hands. And Drew, the sweetheart he is, is quite content with that too.
I love the way the author wrote about Drew being able to hear in colour, I had heard of it before but found it totally fascinating to read it in a book. And in no way does she make light of the matter, the author embraces it and makes it one of his many endearing qualities.
What I also adored about Drew were his lists, lists about everything, including the reasons he loved Bianca. Totally worth the read
I super loved Bianca and Drew. They are so misunderstood and just aching for acceptance. Makes me want to look closer at my own relationships and how I can be better!
It also was funny and vibrant and just seriously hard to stop reading. I loved the conversation about her kissing skills. What skills? 😂 read it and you’ll understand! Love this author so much!
As someone who does not have experience with these specific life experiences this book really opened up a whole world to me. I’ve never considered what someone’s life would be like when they experience the world so differently. Truly great to expand what you know of the world!
In the beginning I wasn’t sure I would be able to continue reading it. I was afraid I would be an emotional mess. But as I continued reading I fell in love with the characters and enjoyed laughing and crying with them. Could Have Been Romantic is well written, intriguing, and tastefully done. I’m so glad I finished reading it. I recommend it to everyone who loves a good romantic comedy.
This had a unique voice as it was told by 2 characters on the Autism/Asbergers spectrum. I thought it was told sensitively and showed many accommodations that are made in everyday interactions and also illustrated how many closest to these characters didn’t quite get the limitations and tweaks needed to make these lovable characters comfortable. Saw a lot of hope in dealing with daily challenges, especially with a life partner who cares enough to understand.
I… didn’t care for this one. I think I could have loved it if they stopped explaining about how their feelings were different from everyone else’s and let me just interpret them myself. It left me feeling like I couldn’t really understand how the characters felt and that this wasn’t actually a romance book… even though they fell in love… except they didn’t… but they did… but also they didn’t. 🤷🏻♀️
When I don't want to keep reading all my other romcom authors, I know Camilla's books will bring in something so different, so romantic, that I'll want to keep reading no matter what else I'm supposed to be doing. Bianca and Drew are so perfect together! I love how much he loves her, and I love when she realizes it. It's such an interesting perspective from an autistic viewpoint. There is so much truth and so much love in this story.
This is a beautiful story about neuroatypical love and, while not exactly what I expected, it was absolutely lovely. The emotional struggles that Bianca and Drew experience and the way that they are presented to the reader are consistent. Ms. Evergreen and her beta readers are to be commended!
I absolutely loved reading this sweet, honest friendship romance. The struggles and misunderstanding of the family to the friendship of a couple is mind-boggling. The ins and outs of their personalities and friendship are eye-opening as well. This is a must-read from beginning to end to appreciate true love.
The squish factor on these two leads is through the roof. I love this story so much for its depiction of two phenomenally perfect characters and them finding their HEA that looks exactly like THEM.
While this book probably isn't for everyone, this is a great look into the wonderful lives of two beautiful neurodivergents and I greatly enjoyed this read!
one of the best neurodivergent stories I've ever read
Camilla Evergreen is one of the queens of writing ND characters. It was both eye-opening and somewhat cathartic to read in equal measure. The family did make me very mad with their arrogant ignorance, though. Except Aunt Lena, she was great. Anyway, this was really amazing. Highly, highly recommend.
This was so cute. I loved how supportive and kind and loyal Bianca and Drew were of each other, and how they never hesitated to defend each other or help each other. Their friendship was so sweet. I also liked the idea of picking and choosing your family based on love and support rather than just blood, especially when that blood was unkind, belittling, dismissive, and rude.
This was adorably sweet and lovely. Respectful neurodivergent representation and wonderful dialog. Like our hero, I am a fan of making lists. This book is making it on to several, including my 'Comfort Reads' list.
I’m only very sad that Poison wasn’t more involved. I know it’s the other side/step to her, but she still could have checked in or been told. I think she would have defended also. But I really liked the story otherwise. I love that they could have been romantic!
This one’s gonna live rent free in my head for a while. What stands out to me more than the neurodivergent characters, is their completely unselfish love for one another. It’s definitely something to aspire to.
Not a romance. Neurodivergent awesomeness meets best friends and business partners, ace/aro and some of the challenges with that identity. I think this was very well written and enjoyed reading.
This is the most unique romance book I have ever read. And I love that Camilla wrote something so different than the usual. Her books make people who are not “the usual” feel seen.
I cried. The breakdowns, overloads, people tell lies, try so hard only to be ridiculed, the just wanting to be loved, is so very real. The love they have with never needing lust is perfect and pure. The safety they find in each other, the fierce way they protect is what forever is made of.
