Adrian and Darcy meet while she's in the wilderness picking herbs for a potion she's wanting to make to trick the coven into thinking she can be what they want. But she gets attacked by a bear shifter and Adrian comes to her rescue. Adrian has to kill the bear because it's a rogue shifter that is sick and went after a human, it's what he does.

Adrian brings Darcy home because she's twisted her ankle but otherwise is fine. He checks on her later and brings her the herbs that she was looking for because his mountain lion keeps telling him that she's their mate. He's a shifter and she's a witch so he's not sure how they could be mates and he doesn't have a pack because he likes to be alone. He and his family don't talk because they are a different shifter than he is and they sent him away when he was younger.

There are some rogue shifters making problems and they think witches are to blame for the problems. So because Darcy isn't a very powerful witch and she was there when Adrian killed the bear shifter they seem to blame her for what's happening. There's some danger for both her and Adrian and he decides to go home and talk with his family for the first time in a long time which I really liked because they needed to talk after everything that happened. His family are a pack of wolf shifters but because of some mixed breeding in his family's past he was born a mountain lion and they tried to help him but he thought they wanted to get rid of him. It was interesting to read how he came to be in a pack of wolves.

I liked the ending and plan on reading more of this series.

I read this last year as First Instinct in the Diablo Falls collaboration as it was originally published. The book got a few tweaks, the setting got moved to Alaska, and Adrian and Darcy are now part of the Alaska Alphas series too. Still a good, sweet story and worth the read under either title (even if personally, it frustrates me when authors publish basically the same story twice).

Darcy (h) is a witch-to-be, trying to prepare for her coven trials. Unfortunately, her stutter makes the results of her incantations... unpredictable. She heads to the national park to gather some herbs for an eloquence spell. But her unfortunate luck holds steady when she encounters a crazed bear instead. Park ranger Adrian (H) is a mountain lion shifter born to a pack of wolves - a genetic throw-back. He's never been comfortable in a pack, his animal demanding solitude instead. He rescues a hiker from a rogue bear shifter, and is surprised to discover that his rescued hiker is his mate. But could his solitary animal ever accept her? Even more of a pressing question, when she is a witch and not another shifter.

This is a sweet and simple supernatural romance. Short, light, enjoyable escapism. A touch of angst as Adrian tries to figure out how a solitary animal like his lion can have a mate, and as they both try to figure out the shifter-witch dynamic. But we ultimately get happy endings on many fronts - the loner finds his match and his peace, the outcast finds acceptance and her own inner strength, a family gets reunited (though another has some fractures). Warm and fuzzy all around.

I wasn't happy with the resolution of Darcy's family situation, though. Just felt unsatisfying. For having so much influence on Darcy's life, her mother wasn't really developed well, even as a background character. We know she didn't approve of Darcy and her magic, that she'd run away from the coven, and that she had a rift with her sister, Darcy's Aunt Willow. We get a reason for the last two, but not the first, or why Aunt Willow would be pushing for Darcy to join the coven.

There are some plot threads introduced that aren't answered (the whole rogue shifter thing, and the possible witch involvement). Not cliffhangers, exactly, but they aren't resolved here and will (presumably) continue through subsequent books. It looks like Kepler will pick up the story soon, since he was featured in the epilogue continuing to investigate the case.

Minor thing. Usually I don't care about covers, especially on Kindle reads (since I don't actually see the cover much), unless they're particularly good or bad. They tend to be a little interchangeable. However. Not that this one is bad, especially, but the guy on the front looks nothing like how Adrian is described. Tawny-haired? Not at all. And he's bulkier than I'd picture someone described as lithe or lean.

Alternating 3rd person POV. No OW/OM drama, no love triangles. No cheating with the leads, but there is some with minor characters (see spoiler above). Novella-length, so not as much depth, but still a sweet and fairly light bit of escapism. Satisfying HEA for the leads, and while not exactly cliffhangers, there are some plot threads unanswered setting up future stories.

Would I read more in the series? By the author? Yes to both. Always like some light SPN romances. Will be interesting to see how this series develops some of the plot threads, compared to the same story set in Diablo Falls.

I read this first as First Instinct in the Diablo Falls collaboration as it was originally published and my review hasn't really changed, though the book did get some tweaks and some additions, so please enjoy!

Adrian is a mountain lion shifter and park ranger who is generally happiest when he's by himself. Darcy is a witch with a stutter who wants nothing more than to be accepted into her Aunt's coven so she can train properly. The two meet under far less than ideal circumstances when Adrian saves her life but shows off his cat in the same breath.

This book is a very sweet romance (with a good dollop of steam) that mixes in some self realization and family love to make it even warmer. There is a little bit of action and some mystery that I believe will cross over into some of the other books as well. If you like your romance hot, paranormal, and sweet, don't pass this up!

Sweet shorter story about a lone mountain lion shifter and a stuttering witch-hopeful without a coven. No real peril, and a few conflicts along the way. Pretty smooth reading. The timeline jumps rather strangely between the last two chapters of the book and the epilogue. Is the epilogue with Kepler supposed to be after the 3+ year time jump (exact amount of time not given but ) between the last two chapters of the story, or does it pick up shortly after the second-to-last chapter when the grizzly rogue was killed?

The backdrop shifters-gone-rogue storyline looks like it will continue into the next book of the series, due out later this spring.

Deliciously deceiving.

The blurb on this doesn't do the story justice.
Adrian is way more than just a shifter prowling the Alaskan wilderness and Darcy is way more than just a wanna be witch.
I am not intending to slur anyone one here but this story blew me away and it was just so much more than what I expected it to be from reading the blurb.
I really enjoyed this and I am sure you will too if you love shifter or witch stories that are a bit taboo for their communities.
Their attraction was way off the charts hot and I burned through the pages with impatience wanting to know what happened next. I loved it!
This is definitely an author I will have to start paying more attention to.

I received a copy in exchange for this, my honest opinion.

Sweet but too short

I guess I'm not pleased with anything. If an erotic romance book takes more than 2 hours to read, it's too slow (unless it's VERY good). If it's less than 1 hour, it's too fast.;)

This was a short read of 1 hour. It deals with Adrian, mountain lion shifter with a chip in his shoulder, and Darcy, wanna-be witch with a stuttering problem. The series deal with an epidemic of rogue shifters, and trying to find the reasons why.

Adrian and Darcy come together almost immediately, yet still seem to match well. I liked the feel of this book, and the writing style. I liked Adrian's and Darcy's characters. But I wanted to know more. What happens with Adrian's family? Does Adrian join a pack? Does he heal the rift with his brother? How is it possible that Adrian's trial was over in 2 minutes? How does the relationship develop further (we see them for a few days!)?

TL;DR: I recommend this as a short novel, because it was sweet and interesting. I'm looking forward to try more books by this author. But I hope there are more details in her other books.

Standalone romance, 3rd person dual point of view. Steamy.

A Good Shifter Romance

I enjoyed this fast paced and detailed story. This heroine and Hero had alot in common. Their attraction was mutual and the love scenes were 5 🔥 flames of hot!
There was drama and suspense with a mystery element. I loved the ending and plan on reading book 2.

Enjoyed it

This is my first book by this author. The plot was good and the characters were interesting. The sexy times didn’t over power the story. The only drawback is that it appears the mystery of whose infecting shifters will be continued in other books in the series. I’m nit a fan of having to purchase other books to get a conclusion but Adrian’s brother is interesting so I at least want to get to his story in Bewitched Shifter. Until next time y’all happy reading.

This was a fun quick read! Quick, fast, fun, mountain liony n witchy! Darcy is someone I can relate to and someone I'd enjoy hanging with. She's not afraid to try and Adrian sounds sooooo dreamy! The real bad guys are identified but the results of whatever they are trying to accomplish is the rogues and one goes down here after trying to take out Darcy. She is an underdog heroine and brilliant at it! He's trying to do the best he can and he is trying to help figure out what is going on. Park Ranger hottie is the great protector and after a quick trip home has him rethinking how things went down years ago... enough to give the family another try. Me thinks Aunt Willow let go to easily but will need to read the next book to see where it goes.
Great start to a new series! I received this book free from the author in exchange for a review....Enjoy!

Light on plot and sense. It kind of jumped around making it feel like it was missing several hundred pages of story.
If is were a short story it needed LESS going on, if it were a novel length it needed MORE going on. Basically it had just the right amount to make no sense and move too fast to be enjoyable.
It needed to been stretched further, WAY further. Some characters had barely a millisecond to develop and some of said development was too quick to be realistic. It was ok but it needed more room to breath and just be a story not this mess of a romance with a sprinkle of mystery that goes nowhere and does not compel me to read any other books in this series.

This is a great story! I loved the world, and the shifter’s personalities become so clear to me. Family, chosen or blood, is just what we all need. Life happens, and then you must choose, witch or lion... if you like shifters, this book is a good choice. I read the zero book first, then this is number one. 👍💕

Sweet and sexy

This book both aroused me and endeared itself to me. Most stories I've read, the mate changes or becomes something she hadn't started out as. While Darcy grows, she doesn't change. And Adrian stays true to his own character as well. They were adorable and sweet. If you love fast-paced, but adorably fun stories, I highly recommend this book.

ONE SPECTACULAR JOURNEY!!!
Fantastic! This imaginative, talented, enthusiastic and compelling dynamic duo imparts one electrifying approach, seizing every feeling with such acumen, proclivity, fervor and unique insight, ramping up this astonishing storyline and gripping plot, melding this gem together piece by piece. Observing the instant realization and charged atmosphere, along with a bevy of shocking twists and stunning turns, testing our characters in ways they could have never imagined. Weaving a cocoon around you so intricately and tight, drawing you deeper into this tangled web until everything else ceases to exists. Anarchy, escapades and havoc run amuck, kicking this gem into a tempest, bursting it into a hissy with a mind-blowing culmination. A raging vortex chocked-full of unsettling events and baffling circumstances propel those swirling emotions into play front and center. Exposing the drama, turmoil, intrigue, misgivings and mounting suspense, along with a boatload of trouble and perplexing situations, you have one block busting adventure. The characters are authentic and original with qualities and traits that transforms into amazing personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and descriptions, as to give you a full understanding and realism that flows smoothly. This book was well written and is a great start to the series! Adrian is a loner as a mountain lion shifter born to a family of wolves. He worked as a forest ranger which fits his loner status. Then he saved this beautiful human, Darcy, from a rogue bear shifter. She was actually a witch or soon to be witch with a stutter. His mountain lion knew she was his mate immediately and he fought it for only a short time. They went out on a date and that's all she wrote. They helped each other, Adrian helping Darcy with her potions and confidence for her important test to become part of the coven and Darcy helping Adrian when he was put on a shifter trial for killing the rogue bear shifter. Darcy realized being part of the coven was not as important as Adrian and Adrian realized his family, wolves though they may be, is still his loving family.

With a little bit of sensuality (or more sex... uality) and a semi decent storyline, this book wasn’t bad.

I think it may have more to do with the fact that I love shifters and witches, some concepts in the story were only half explained and some only with a small pinprick of an idea and you had to figure out the rest with no string.
You get past one obstacle and then boom you are 3 years in the future with no real knowledge of what happened other then a kid and some expansions on the cabin... how tf did that happen????
The only other thing is that the epilogue semi gets you hooked onto reading the next book and following the brothers “transfer”

Untamed instinct has great characters and world building although she could have been more clear on what was going on with the witches in the story line but that said I really liked the plot and I really began to care about the characters and they’re problems I would recommend this book to a lot of my friends and this is why I gave it the rating I did

Great experience overall good plot and great characters an overall great experience for a great afternoon read I am sure this book will continue to rate well for this author

Good shifter novella

I enjoyed Adrian and Darcy’s fated mates shifter romance with a side of mild danger. Adrian is a mountain lion forest ranger who keeps to himself. Darcy is a witch whose stutter affects her ability to cast. They meet when a rogue bear shifter Adrian is hunting attacks Darcy. The story included sweet moments, steamy scenes, chuckles, messy families, painful pasts, shifter politics, light danger, and instalove. While short, the story included characters with some dimension and a fairly engaging storyline.

When a guy is a sport and a loner, mates are not something he even thinks as being relevant to him. Then, bam! That scent! Catching that scent while investigating poaching does not help a guy concentrate. That is part of the charm of this unexpected meeting of two almost-outcasts who figure out what it means to be fated mates. The preview of the next book in the series has me wondering if it is going to be as fun as this one.

Typical mf shifter insta-love mating romance. The only variation is that the female is a wannabe witch, and there are hints that a rogue outbreak is linked to witchcraft.
Typo: reigning means to rule (Latin for king and queen are rex and regina), reining (from horse riding) means to slow down. Also, the woman states that her stutter didn't abate despite physical therapy. Isn't speech therapy the usual treatment?

This wasn't awful, but it wasn't great either. It's quite a short book, so we don't really get much time to explore the characters and they don't have much depth. The action is all over pretty quickly too. Adrian is a bit wimpy for a supposedly tough mountain lion shifter. It lacks the whole masculine alpha punch that I expected from "Alaska Alphas".

It was good enough for me to finish reading it, but not good enough to look for the next book.

An absolutely fun read!

I absolutely love shifter romances, and this one is now a favorite. The idea of a mountain lion shifter being born in a pack of wolves due to past genetics was really cool and I love the way the family drama played out throughout the story. The heroine was also lovable with her struggle to achieve her goals despite her disability. And the only other thing I’ll say is the whole catnip incident was great!

Adrian and Darcy

Adrian had no idea that patrolling for a rogue shifter would mean that he would meet his mate. Darcy was just in the forest looking for plant roots for her potion to take to become an apprentice witch and be accepted into the witches coven Can these two sort out all their differences and be together. I absolutely loved this book and would thoroughly recommend it.

It was a good book, and I think I'll read the next in the series... The reason for one less star was that the end felt a bit abrupt, there were some questions I wanted answered about the main leads respective families..
And the fact that the mystery with the rogues wasn't solved was a bit of a let down... It seems that it will continue on in the next book... But it was interesting enough that I want to give the rest of the series a chance...

Exciting

A mystery, a murder, a fated mate romance, all in one action packed and fast paced story that is the first of a promised series. If you like unusual shifter romance and love looking for clues in stories this one will keep you guessing and waiting for the next story in the adventure
