You’d think I’d already been in hell, married to my ex. But just this one time, you’d be wrong.
Surprise, surprise, the Dark Council has been plotting to force my hand. They know that I love Crash. Yes, I said the L word. And they know I’d do anything to bring him back from hell—even though it means it puts both our souls into great danger. And puts my knees into running mode. (Cue the Advil.) Now, I’m headed straight into a hell that is straight out of a Greek Odyssey.
Cerberus, the Ferryman, and Hades himself better watch their backs, because even they won’t stop me and Feish from getting to Crash and finding a way to bring him home. One way or another, I’m going to get my blacksmith back in arms. And more preferably, finally in my bed.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.
I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)
Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.
I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)
As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.
Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.
Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.
That hook at the end!!! Omg next needed immediately! My goodness. Ok, getting back under control now.
This book was amazing. I have truly enjoyed the entire series but honestly, this one ups the ante. Bree is determined to change the fate of her man, Crash, and her friends back her up the whole way. Bree is exhausted but determined to not give up. She will turn over every stone and seek every connection she has made since taking control of her true destiny. She continues to grow and become stronger mentally which is astounding at this point. It certainly helps that she has such amazing friends to prop her up when she is getting in a funk!
We meet some new and interesting characters in this book that, I bet, will play a pivotal part in the future of this series. Our faves are still present and being awesome. The author adds depth to those we thought we knew and throws some shockers our way for giggles.
This series has a strong FMC, smoking hot MMC, amazing found family, great fantasy and magic, and a plot that grows but doesn’t kink or lose you along the way. Highly recommend this book and the entire series.
Ugh I’m so disappointed I can’t even express it. I guess the moral of the story will be the friends they made along the way because that’s all Bree talks about is her friends and how much she loves them (which, good for I guess?). Plus I really. really, REALLY don’t understand the LOVE between Bree and Crash. Like…they barely know each other and now they have this epic love? Yeah…no. At least she didn’t talk about farts in this book. That’s a win I guess. I just don’t buy that she’s so perfect and special. I’m generous with two stars, but I honestly want to give one. This series has dragged on for way too long. It just feels like she’s writing books to cash a paycheck. The story isn’t any better for this addition. It just feels overworked at this point. And each subsequent book becomes more and more forgetful. I honestly could not remember what happened in the previous book. Like at all. I have a feeling when the next one of these comes out I will have no idea either. They’re not good books. Completely forgettable. Hashtag sad face.
This one may be my most favorite one of the series. It is SO good!! Book eight, picks up where we left off on the previous book and gosh, this one is a nail biter! So many close calls and familiar faces. Eeek!! It's so bloody good!! It was hard to put down. I don't want to ruin it but seriously get off of here and go start this series! You will love Bree, Crash, Robert, Feish, Kinkly, and the rest of the gang!!
If you're a fan of paranormal women's fiction, found family, a strong heroine, and paranormal romance, then definitely check this series out!
I hate giving such a poor rating to an 8th book in a series. I will not be reading any more of these. Repetitive, dull, cringey. Took me four months to slog through and we waited through eight books for that paltry graveyard scene. Nope. If she is such a prude she needs to say “ducking” then maybe she should skip the sexy stuff too. Such a promising series that should have ended many books ago.
First, for those readers who moan and groan that Bree talks about her aching muscles too much, that is all but gone in this book. When it is mentioned, which is rare, it’s deserved by anyone’s standards! That said, on to my review……
This one had me transfixed! Grooming my dogs and reading, cooking and reading, “listening” to hubby and reading……..you get it.
Our beloved Bree is back, along with her family of wonderful misfits!! Crash is dead and Bree must get his soul back from Hell. Everyone is trying everything and anything to find a way to get into Hell. A spell? A portal? A door? The team is tracking down every rumor ever heard of on how to get there.
Not until Bree gets a visit from a family member offering up some advice, does she realize that her to Hell is by following her path. Her Sentinel path. Even she doesn’t know what that fully means at that time but she soon finds out. From here, the book flies with old and new characters alike setting her and the gang on a crazy ride!!
Mayer’s version of hell is amazing in its originality and very vivid, in my opinion. I white knuckled through most of it.
Some FANTASTIC Easter Eggs (one is fanatically funny) and a nice spicy scene rounds out this book perfectly.
As is Shannon’s way, she leaves us with our jaws dropped to lead us into book nine.
Listen- this ending right here has about crippled me. I was not prepared at all. Not even a little. I mean wow. So basically, the whole last third of the book has my whole heart in knots. I’m not even sure how to explain all of this. Bree has become an amazing character. She has become quite an inspiration, especially to those who are the same age. I must say that her group of friends have made such a huge difference in how things can be looked at. Of course, it’s a fantasy fiction novel. But if you’re actually really reading, it’s real life on how to look at things as good versus evil. How to look at the small things that make the biggest differences. how to know that love can change so many. How to be grateful. How to just keep believing in yourself. This author has been a must have for me for a very long time, but the more she writes, the more it becomes very obvious that she has talent, and I’m not even sure she realizes. I am always grateful and of course excited when I read any of her books. Magnificent that’s what I’m going to describe this writing as.
This series is usually an enjoyable, lighthearted fast-paced read but with this and the previous instalment I’ve found that I’m just not as invested anymore. There’s just too many new characters to contend with and the plot has gotten a little too convoluted.
It was missing some of the humour and tension that I loved earlier on in the series.
After 7 books of sexual tension I was quite underwhelmed with that reunion/graveyard scene. - I wanted fireworks…Instead we got soggy grass.
Crash’s dialogue and interactions were pretty lukewarm.
As much as I love Breena and the gang I’m ready for this series to be wrapped up.
It’s probably just me but I’m starting to find that there are too many characters. It seems like new ones are added in every book and I’m not sure that they add to the plot. Anyway, Bree is on a quest to find a way to rescue Crash from hell which involves following different leads trying to find someone who knows how to get her there. Then there’s the added pressure of trying to locate and destroy a creature rampaging through the supernatural community.
If those challenges weren’t enough, she finds that she has a cousin whose existence had been wiped from her memory. Said cousin is the strongest witch in decades and it appears she has sided with the evil Council. There are indications here and there that she may be playing both sides. Is this cousin really trying to help Bree or has she fully turned to the dark side?
I think my favorite character was the demon possessed blade.
Shannon Mayer's "Midlife Soul Hunter" (Forty Proof #8) is a wonderfully original and quirky look at our heroine who is over 40 and starting over. I pissed myself laughing out loud all the way through. Shannon is a loose cannon when she writes and trust me you would not want her any other way. Shannon and the other Fab 13 are taking the world by storm by showing that being over 40 does not mean the end of life but something to be celebrated, pee pads and all. This brilliant story takes us on a journey where Breena finds herself in the most unlikely of situations and it is hard not to feel like you are on the run with her every step of the way. With laughter and magic, ex husbands and demons, leprechauns, werewolves, skeletons and more and you have everything you could ever want in a story, now you just need a bottle of wine and a quiet place to lose yourself in Shannon's fantastic writing. Bring on the next book.
This series started out great and went downhill. I just can't help thinking that Breena is an idiot. She's so busy jumping into the fire that she never takes the time to think anything through. What is worse is that she drags her friends into the danger with her. I feel like, if she would just take a few days to research and think things through, she wouldn't wind up in half the situations she finds herself in. Also, I get that she "loves" Crash, but the idea that she would ignore everything else going on in Savannah to find how to get into hell? Yeah, I found that ridiculous. He died. She looked for hell's entrance for 3 weeks! She comes across as extremely selfish. Even after her dad tells her to stop searching because bad things were happening, she questions whether or not to still look for hell. There's still adventure and excitement, but I'm getting bored. We have all these things happening, but nothing is solved and the plot just twists in a different direction. I just want it to end!
Why am I still reading this series? The 7 book build up to Crash and Bree finally getting together did not climax as I had hoped. There are still tons of questions about Bree and her magic. Now we have a bunch of new characters who are super important apparently. Ugh it’s like I’m still at book one. I think I’m done now. Crash was absent from most of this book that slow burn was really driving me to continue reading. At this point I don’t feel connected to any of the characters. I’ve lost the plot! If you have made it this far, kudos but basically all the same things that have been happening are continuing to happen and there are still zero answers.
Man the writing is just not good, to the point where i’m editing in my head instead of even paying attention to what’s supposed to be happening. I like the idea of a random cousin, and the journey through hell was creepy and pretty good, but honestly, all the times Bree is like, huh, that’s weird and moves on without investigating or thinking AT ALL gets her nearly killed and her friends kidnapped eeeeevery time. So, sadly, it’s a bit too boring at this point, even chapter 19, sadly, but i wish the characters well.
As much as I love this series this one fell a bit flat for me. To echo everyone else the climax was pretty anticlimactic. But beyond that the worst part was the breaking of the third wall, multiple times. I don't need the MC to speak directly to me, tell me to skip or bookmark a sex scene or anything like that. It cheapened the book, took me out of the story, and if this was a new to me author it would be enough to keep me from reading anything else from them. Hopefully the next one is better. Is it wrong that I'm kind of hoping the next one will be the last one?
When my son read a page over my shoulder and asked, “Mom, are you reading a book for middle schoolers?” I realized he was right. The stories have gotten less creative, the writing immature and characters less interesting than the beginning few books. I don’t even care to know what happens anymore. Why don’t authors understand a story arc cannot go on forever? There’s a reason trilogies are popular and not 9 book series.
I hate stories that end on a cliff hanger! Each book should be a stand alone story-adventure that is completed and not start the next story--adventure until the next book in a series. I am done.
This book is so good! I mean the book is full of action from the first page to the last page. I love the writing style. The characters are well developed the story has plenty of twists to keep you guessing. The scenes are so well written that you feel like you are in the book. I love that Breena is over forty. I mean reading a book with a strong older protagonist is so much fun and a bit more relatable to me since I am no longer in my twenties or thirties. And yes I take Advil have aches and pains and carry around a bit of extra weight, so there's that. I love Breena and her crew of misfits. I mean a Bigfoot that bakes when he is stressed out, a giant spider that loves to read and edit books. A fairy that loves to do makeup and hair, a skeleton that is always there when you need him, is carried around in a convenient compact finger that fits nicely in Breena's purse and comes with his very own skeleton horse that Breena can call anytime from any place. A river princess that makes a mean cup of tea and loves to read erotica. See misfits, but they are fierce and loyal friends that accomplish so much more than the protagonists ever think they will. Then you have Crash the king of the Dark Fae. I mean Do I need to say more? Well okay then, Crash is also a blacksmith and he is just as hot as the fire in his forge. Now you know. Old friends return, new enemies pop up and we learn so much more about Gran and Breena's grandpa. The ending, well the ending has such a great hook for the next book, I couldn't even be mad that I have to wait because I know it will be well worth waiting on. If you love a book that pulls you in, makes you laugh, cry, sit on the edge of your seat and then laugh some more this one is for you. It has adventure, romance (with appropriate warning from the author who has also made it possible for you to skip that part all together and not miss out on much of the story, just the juicy part between Crash and Breena) I keep saying this but when I grow up I want to be Breena. Loved this one, love the entire series would give ten stars if I could.
So with book 8, in the Midlife series by Shannon Mayer, we are starting to get a long history and background that is needed to enjoy the story. Characters that reappear and are important, to me, to understand. I would definitely recommend reading this series in order, including the short stories like “Robert” That book will help you understand a bit more about a new character introduced plus the history of a few of our older characters. With that being said this series is so enjoyable and fast paced. There’s not many I would do a second read of but these make me laugh. Bree is a divorced workmen in her forties going back home. She is awakened to who and what she really is and left behind all those years ago. I love the family and friends that Bree builds and her kindness to even those that have hurt and betrayed her. She has a big heart and is the perfect sentinel to protect the city from all the evil that wants to destroy it. Lots of challenges and obstacles in this book for Bree and a few of her friends. All to build up and get us ready for the final book! I disagree with a review saying they are tired of the no happy ever endings for this series. There definitely is several and yet as with life, its not always how we chose or in the time frame we want. I love the anticipation and not knowing. Trying to figure out how the twists and turns will end and play out. I’m always surprised and pleased with the creative ways Shannon has shown us how happily ever afters can be. Perspective and patience! Hope is always there with Bree! She is not one to ever give up! So get started if you haven’t already or join in on this crazy, loving and laughable adventure with book 8. Even in hell the group can keep a positive happy spin on things and find a way out. Why because they believe in love and family. No matter what form it takes!
Hope you're ready because this author has brought yet another page-turner that is going to leave you with all the feels and on the verge of giving your device flying lessons. LOL! Bree is back! Heartbroken? Yes. Struggling at the moment? Yes. Determined to bring back the man that she loves? You bet your sweet bippy! LOL! Book 7 left us with our jaws on the floor and ready to riot, but book 8 brings that and more. LOL! Bree has a hard road ahead of her. The Council is determined to get what they want and they are going to exploit her feelings to do so. Crash has warned her before they were ripped apart, but does Bree care about the consequences? Yes and no. Here's hoping that love triumphs. Prepare for a ton of twists in this book. Secrets revealed that you will not see coming. Be sure to pick your jaw up off the floor. Though...maybe just leave it there. That will be it's new residence. LOL! Are you prepared to go to the "Underworld" and meet all the beasties who live there? It's an exciting part of the story let me tell ya! The ending? Yeah, in true fashion this author is going to leave you a mess on the floor. Of course, it just means you'll be anticipating the next book in the series. This series just keeps getting better and better! LOL! Now, if I can just refrain from becoming Lego Bad Cop (you know the scene I mean) when I'm left with these endings. LOL! 5 out of 5 stars. This series is just too good. Don't miss out. Crossing fingers for Bree...she's going to need lots of luck, good friends and Advil. LOL
Book 8 was one I waited for. Thats the only downside IMO of reading incomplete series from writers that have multiple on the go. They can only go so fast, and if you read their books quickly - you could find yourself with a bit of a wait between books. Though, I suppose before KU and ebooks where it was easier to get indie books, it could sometimes be over a year between hardcopy books to get through the process. Anyway, back to Bree.
Bree is determined to get Crash back. She knows it, The Dark Council knows it, her friends know it. So what if they keep hitting dead ends. So what if her friends might be starting to slow down in their search. So what of she is reaching her last idea of where to look. One way or the other Bree will be getting Crash back. No one will stop her.
Just like the others, 8 is action packed with lots of twists and turns. There is some skippable spice near the end, and an epic journey to hell itself. There is still one more book to come. I just wish I didnt have to wait until 2024 for it lol
"Love doesn’t change a man. He either changes because he is made to understand a truth, or he stays as he is because he chooses to hide from the truth. Nothing else can make him change. Not truly.”
“Do not give up hope, Feish. Not on love. Just understand that there is only so much it can do, and so very many things that it can’t.”
"But it’s okay to be… down. It’s okay to not always be the strong one and to let your friends hold you together for a while.”
I took a break after book 7 and am reading this book 2 months later, that being said I am a bit unsure how I feel about this book.
Not much has changed but the feel of the book is very different from the others. While Bree still has to learn not to trust other as easily (Marge/Remy/Roderick). A lot of things went well in this book, they went to hell and got Crash back and came back with her group mostly intact. It always feels like one step forward and a few steps back. When one good things happens then its always followed by getting even more into trouble. Always one step closer to completing the spell. She lacks the ability to be able to see the bigger picture and how thing are unfolding.
The plot/story line is progressing we see her and Crash finally got together. Suzy and Eric are reunited. Kinkly and Damian have something going on. Just waiting for Feish to find someone. One thing that I did not like was that all of a sudden there is another witch that comes out of no where. She just happens to be the most powerful and related to Bree. Just seems the author pulled that out of her butt or so it seems to me. There were no mention of this in any of the previous books.
Also so many people seem to have secrets that come back to bite the team in the butt at important times. They should learn to be honest and just tell each other important things.
O.M.G. This series has had me hooked from the very start and this latest addition, well it has left me sitting here trying to turn a page for more and gobsmacked to say the least. These characters are family and this world that they live in is so amazing and we have been introduced and shown so many different supernatural/paranormal beings and this eighth book is no different. We literally hit the ground running as Bree and the others are exhausted from trying to save Crash from hell and it just does not stop. We meet some old friends, which did have me tearing up and some new enemies we didn’t know existed and old enemies that we wish didn’t exist, as these incredible characters battle on to save this town. We get to travel to new dimensions and I would like to say it was good to see Steve but I would be lying!! (Those of you who know, will know!!) it’s exciting, it’s thrilling and chapter 19 was so worth waiting for but that ending, well I definitely did not see that coming, though something tells me that I should have. Surprises, and twists and turns that at times had me spinning and gasping and some losses that, well at least one of them had me shed a tear or two, I adore this world and cannot wait to read more.
Where to even begin?! The best I can even say is buckle up and settle down somewhere comfy cause you aren't going to want to put this book down. Bree is back, and she has a plan to save Crash from h3ll and the underworld, but we all know nothing is ever simple. Twists, turns, ups and downs doesn't begin to cover it. Every time you think...ok, she has to do this...nope, it turns out to be the complete opposite or something so unexpected that you just sit there wondering how in the world-or underworld is that even possible.
I have been reading Shannon Mayer books/series since about 2016/2017 and I have loved every single book, but this one has slowly taken over as my favorite.
***Sidebar, if you've read other Shannon Mayer books (which if you haven't you really should, all of them are freaking awesome) there are Easter eggs throughout the book that will have you smiling and even going back to previous books just to re-read. That being said, if you haven't read any of her books (seriously why not though?) the nods won't take away from the story at all and all fit in seamlessly.
Ok, now stop reading my review and go get the book...ALL of them!! You won't regret it for one second.
I mean I get true love and I really understand Crash! He would be my choice out of all the guys that keep throwing themselves at her. First there is a massive Frankenstein type monster on the loose. Somehow it has left numerous bodies behind but no one knows about it. You would think the supernaturals would be spreading the gossip like wildfire. The cops kept a lid on the case because they have no idea what could have caused the deaths. Breena is consumed with getting to hell. It's been three weeks of everyone searching for the information on how to get there. No one knows. After seeing this monster up close Breena understands that she has to wait & save the city first. Eventually she has to let a demon possess her so she can fight 4 of those monsters at once. When she goes to hell it's just Robert, Kinkley & Corb. She didn't choose who went with her. Wait till you hear how she shakes up hell! It's really amazing. She & Crash finally have their moment. I must say after reading the scene with Remy in the last book I gotta say I wasn't impressed with it. She & Crash have had better we almost had sex scenes than this! It left me lacking. One final thing big cliffhanger at the end. Oh & someone dies.
The ending of the previous book devastated me, yet the glimmer of hope Mayer instilled from the beginning of this book kept me devouring this book at a rapid pace. I think the crossroads that Breena faces to rescue her love or do what’s right for the fate of Savannah was brilliant. It really weighed on my own heart as a reader which is a sign of masterful storytelling.
As always, there’s plenty of mystery, danger, love, and some unforeseen twists. Writing this review is sooo difficult because there are so many spoilers I want to comment on! Suffice to say I was pleasantly surprised. And the surprise appearance of a certain shifter made me laugh so so SO hard! I still absolutely LOVE when Mayer breaks the fourth wall and addresses readers directly (especially before any spice), which PRAISE THE LORD THERE FINALLY IS!!!! And not just a tease! I was left just as satisfied as Breena and it made me soooo happy…. UNTIL THE MASSIVE HOOK Mayer set for the next book. I’M STILL YELLING ABOUT IT. Needless to say, I need the next book ASAP!!!
I am so in love with this series. Shannon puts her readers through an emotional roller coaster with every book. If you haven't read any of this series I would highly recommend you start with "Midlife Bounty Hunter". Every book in this series is connected and would be best to read them in order.
In this book Bree is trying to rescue Crash's soul from Hell. Of course she encounters obstacles at every corner. New and old characters make you question if they are friend or foe and you have no choice but to keep reading until the end. And yes like the first seven books this one ends on a cliff hanger as well. The plot I give more then 5 stars because ita just that good. This is a book you read for all the emotions not just the spice. It's there but you can skip it if you want, the author warns you before she gets really into it. 😘 I love how strong Bree has become even with all the aches and pain of being over 40. I can't wait for book nine and I hope there is a tenth book since I'm enjoying this world so much.
