Amy Proebstel’s novel, “Ascension’s Call”, expertly blurs the lines between fantasy and reality, causing readers to seriously question which storyline presents the truth and which is a fabrication of main character Amanda’s mind.
Proebstel’s well-written plot line leads readers on a seemingly realistic trek through the remnants of Amanda’s fractured memories. Even as readers walk side-by-side with her as she awakens from a 7-year coma and finds that her life on Tuala may have been just a vivid dream, current circumstances seem to indicate otherwise. As Amanda sets out on her mission to prove that the man she loves really does exist, readers have a harder and harder time denying that both worlds—Earth and Tuala—may, in fact, exist.
Proebstel’s tale is rich in psychological drama with her heroine torn between reality and what she is told is fantasy. In fantasy, anything is possible, and the reader is so clued in to Amanda’s life in this novel that it’s hard to choose which of Proebstel’s main character’s lives is real and which is not. The author’s ability to seamlessly project circumstances from one life onto the other, the richness of her characters, the consistency of her timeline within the main story, and the framework of the Tualan society she has created and developed are each main hallmarks of great writing. All put together, Proebstel has created a mind-bending psychological fantasy that will certainly hook readers into this intriguing novel series.
Ascension's Call, Book 4 was as hard to out down as Books 1-3 were. The first part of the book had me wondering if Tuala and Riccan were just a dream, or worse yet, the ravings of an Amanda I don't know any longer, an Amanda who is physically and emotionally unwell. Amanda's determination to get to the bottom of the story mirrored my own desire to keep reading until I could figure out what was going on. A very compelling, then extremely worrisome, and then rewarding installment in the series. It's a good thing Book 5 is coming soon! I already have it on pre-order. A wonderfully woven story that continues to unfold in the best, most suspenseful way possible.
I will be honest, I thought the book would be less interesting when the author took us back to Earth. I loved Tuala. Can I just say how misconceived that thought was? This was by far my favorite book of the series because I still don't know what happened and that's a great thing. While I thought the therapy scenes from previous books were puzzling, I was dragged into even deeper and more intriguing puzzles. Tuala, the Earth, the therapy sessions.... what is going on? I will not give any spoilers but my answer is I have no clue. And the book ended at such a place that I need the fifth book immediately.
Amanda is caught in between worlds, and so are us readers. From a disturbing experience with a vicious doctor trying to renew her memory, we jump into an unexplained alternative reality. A romantic interest develops and we follow it as it encompasses both the Earth and Tuala. I'm looking forward to understanding more about the complex plot in action!
