Let me begin with, I have never read an epic fantasy or dystopian book without being forced in school. However, this book and author came across my For You Page in TikTok on the day I finished my last book, therefore I figured it was a sign. When I read Chessed Freeman, was a little Huey and a little Riley, I immediately thought of my brother and knew that this book was for me. In fact, one of the charms of this book is that each of the characters reminded me of someone I knew. For me it was an emotional ride, with each page I felt either empowered, enraged, encouraged, and at times even heartbroken. As an African-American woman, there were times I found myself saying, “yep, that's exactly right" or "I knew it! They're no good now, figures they’re trash in the future" and even a few “God is good!" Mr. Bolling found a way to create a world that even though it is fantasy, still makes sense. It is beautifully written, and he paints amazing visuals, this is something you can definitely imagine seeing on the big screen.
Diverse characters, unique representation, gritty worldbuilding, and epic battles worthy of the silver screen. That's what I wanted to give readers when I created this work !
