A second chance holiday novella from Maria Vale's award-winning Legend of All Wolves series.
In the eleven years since her mate died, Leonora has immersed herself in teaching the Great North Pack how to deal with humans, the new apex predators. She doesn’t even have time for her oldest friend, Sten, the huge, terse and terrifying head of Carpentry. Now, with an encroaching storm and a disastrous attempt to introduce wolflings to the peculiarities of human holidays, their Adirondack Homelands seems to be conspiring to bring Sten and Leonora back together.
This novella was originally published in the 2021 Shifters and Mistletoe anthology; all proceeds will be donated to the Wolf Conservation Center.
Maria Vale is a journalist who has worked for Publishers Weekly, Glamour, Redbook and the Philadelphia Inquirer. She's a double-Rita finalist whose books have been listed by Amazon, Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, ALA Booklist & Kirkus among their Best Books of the Year. Trained as a medievalist, she persists in trying to shoehorn the language of Beowulf into things that don't really need it.
I absolutely love Maria Vale's Legend of All Wolves so I was pretty excited when I saw that she provided a novella for this collection. Wonderland features Leonora, who teaches wolves how to deal with humans, and her oldest friend, Sten, who is the head of carpentry. They both have feelings for each other but never really came out and admitted to it, however, they will have time when they find themselves alone and in close proximity during a storm.
I absolutely enjoyed this novella, I honestly would've loved for it to be a full-length novel. I just love the world Maria has created for this series, and I am going to be super sad when it comes to an end with the last book releasing in 2022 (note: read and reviewed this book in 2021). This book was fun and I enjoyed the bit of suspense and romance sprinkled into it.
Despite it being October, I decided to read the Christmas-themed Wonder Land. The Christmas references were quite funny, and despite the suspenseful scenes, the snow and cold was quite beautiful. While perhaps a tad abrupt, I thought the ending worked quite well.
It is what it is. It's a great short story about 2 characters that have been mentioned since book 1. A pairing that was never hinted at, but it works. It does however feel like, at the beginning at least, like you're reading about your principal--since the FMC is basically the one and only teacher of the Pack.
I wish the author had explicit scenes like the one scene here in the other books. The act itself was glossed over but the foreplay was described in more detail than 3 of the 5 previous books.
Otherwise, it's a great quick read if you're having a series hangover.
This is a sweet novella about Leanora and Sten, two of the wolves in the great north pack. Leanora teaches human behaviors and Sten runs the carpentry shop. On the eve of a Christmas storm Leanora and Sten clear away the past between them.
This was short and sweet. I really liked the insight into Leanora and Sten. Both of who are great supporting characters to the rest of the series. I also really loved what the wolves did with the Christmas traditions, hehehehe.
I absolutely adore this series. It is the most unique, moving and at times hilarious in the perspective of wild wolves trying to learn and understand human customs. And I love how the author unfolds the love story to really pull at your heart strings. If you are new to this series, keep in mind that these are wild wolves who transform into human, not the other way around, and they have to learn human ways in order to survive.
A novella set in the Legend of All Wolves world. Needless to say that I loved it. This series is one to devour. Humorous. Exciting. Insightful. And totally different from any other shifter PNR I ever read. And if you want to know how wolf pups celebrate Christmas, read this novella. Because it will make you laugh and warm your cockles at the same time. 🐺❄
This was a lovely little morsel of a story, set around some weird human holiday (lol) and featuring old friends becoming more. I loved the return to the world of these amazingly wild wolves.
