This review can act as the review for the whole shebang...
While this trilogy didn't blow me away, I did enjoy it and I feel grateful to have received all the ARCs for it through Whitney's newsletter. The plot was engaging and fast-paced and I liked the characters well enough too.
But mostly, I just really appreciate what Whitney G. was trying to do here. She included acknowledgements at the beginning and ending of each book in this series in which she blatantly states that this was a passion project. That she wrote it for herself. That she was trying to branch out more in her writing. And that she wasn't even sure this trilogy would ever see the light of day.
And so I don't want any less than stellar reviews to discourage her from having pulled the trigger on publishing this (not that she will ever even read this lowly review anyway, but whatever). As I was saying...You can see that WG is definitely trying to exercise her darker side and spread her writing wings a bit. And while I can't honestly say this first foray blew me away, I can say that I definitely saw the potential in it and am supportive of her efforts.
I do wish that she had condensed it down into one single book and focused more on the relationship building between the main couple. Relationship building is more than just sex scenes and mushy conversations (which the H would meta-textually remind us wouldn't be happening at the beginning of each book). The best kind is sometimes just time spent together and conversations about nothing.
Why tell me in every prologue of each book that the hero is not your typical hero, he can't be fixed, he won't turn into a lovesick hero worthy of rooting for etc. and at the end of it, it's exactly that. Michael is nothing special. He comes back to safe Meredith, he's begging her in his own way to come back to him and they get their happy end. The story is nothing but predictable.
Legacy of Lies like the rest of the series is an easy and fast read. So I'm leaving it with 2.5 stars.
It's official. This heroine belongs to the "TSTL" category... I’m also still not impressed with the romance but dang I love revenge stories, which is the only reason I’m giving this 2 stars.
So did I like this series? Unfortunately, no, not really. But you can bet your ass that I'll be there for Whitney G.'s future releases.
**ARC generously provided in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
I liked this story. It had a novelty that held my interest. It was suspenseful, intense, intriguing, the plot had plenty twists and turns.
It was not a trilogy. It was one book that consisted of three parts.
Michael Anderson had been lying from page one! He and Meredith were full of secrets and lies. They had an amazing chemistry yet I didn’t detect the feelings in their relationship and all these steamy moments didn’t help to establish or develop their connection.
I liked Michael but I had mixed feelings for Meredith, yet some scenes had my eyes rolling back.
Although the whole story was fast paced, the last part felt very rushed written, problems were easily solved or answered.
I really couldn’t decode the tone of Michael in his prologues of each part. Or maybe I didn’t want to, in case it would upset me...

After Michael let Meredith go, we the readers had to know she would not follow his rules and instructions to get herself to Switzerland and to safety which annoyed me. She does the exact opposite and stays in the bad area of Mexico and gets almost killed by the Cartel since they figured out, she is worth a lot and attempt to kidnap her and harm her but thankfully Michael is already there once he realized she never went through with his plan.
This book gets 3.5 stars for the way it handled the way her father and her aunt were dealt with when all their truth comes out and also about the reveal about Michael's TWIN brother Trevor reveals that years ago Meredith's aunt (her mother’s sister and the one who currently works with him and has an affair with) contracted them to kill her sister! Trevor could not go through with it as he fell in love with her and gave her the freedom, she needed but sadly she never wanted Trevor after that as he took her away from her daughter and moves on with her life in secret and is in love with someone else.
It was odd to know that Meredith's brother-in-law and twin to her husband had something with her mother?? We never got that conclusion, so it was odd, and we also do not get the scene where Meredith meets her mother after all those years when Meredith finds out her mother never died and is free/alive.
So, the way they dealt with her dad and aunt is not enough for her, they get all the money and show the world the video and all his bad/illegal dealings and give them an option to either go to prison or to go live in a third world country with nothing and they choose the second option. Right before all of this is happening though Michael finally gets to the last name in his list and it’s the man who abused them the most (300 times) and was the one who had them sign documents every time to give to court that wanted to stay with their uncle. It's just gross and disturbing how fucked up this whole situation is, Michael kills him and it's all over.
Meredith also now wants to help Michael with his jobs (though not murder). He told her the whole truth about his life and all that it contained, allowing her into his deep dark past.
He truly loves her and did everything to protect her and never wanted to cause her harm so him believing that he is a bad guy is just his perception of himself but in reality, he is a broken man who needed love and peace (which he has found with her). No epilogue to let us see into their life’s years from now though.
Things I liked: -Strong heroine at certain times -Sexy hero. Even though he's pretty scummy for a majority of the book -Chemistry between characters.
Really, the same problem I have with all of Whitney G's books also apply to this one. -Tons of baggage stacked on top of each other. For a series this short, can we come up with anything else besides sexual abuse?? It just feels like decoration to make the hero seem redeemable. -Not enough time with the characters together -Really rushed ending. -Rich people problems
Also, I felt like WG was mocking her readers. Each book starts with a prologue in the hero's voice telling us how we, the readers, are stupid to expect a groveling hero that will get down to his knees and cry and beg for the heroine to forgive him. Other times she mocks certain Goodreads reviews for being negative. Not sure what that was all about? Just came out of left field and it felt political instead of adding to the story.

An astounding ending to a gripping series. I was absolutely addicted to these characters and their story from start to finish. I will miss them and hope that Whit will write more about a certain Anderson brother soon.
In the meantime let’s talk about Michael and Meredith whose story picks up right where Queen of Lies left off when Michael callously leaves Meredith alone in Mexico with strict instructions on how to start a new life without him, leaving her hurt and confused.
While Michael unsuccessfully tried to continue with his life without regretting leaving Meredith behind, she would not be deterred by him nor her family. She’d face her future head held high without him. But in an interesting twist of fate, their paths cross once more. Will Michael ask for forgiveness? Can Meredith give it?
Despite his repeated warnings, I couldn’t help but love Michael even though there were times I wanted to hate him. He made me smile and smirk repeatedly. His overconfident and anti-hero persona was fascinating and his dirty mouth and failed attempts at romance were incredibly appealing.
In this last installment all questions are answered and sticky situations are solved. Whitney brings all the pieces together. It was great to see how Meredith took hold of her life while bringing happiness he never thought he’d have to Michael. She’s smart, strong and determined. I couldn’t have picked a better partner for him.
Legacy of Lies is serial #3 of the Empire of Lies series trilogy by New York Times & USA Today bestselling author Whitney G.. It is the amazing conclusion of the series, told from both points of view with yes… a happy ending despise our Hero-Not-hero’s warning. sub-genres: romantic thriller.
* I was given an ARC of this book courtesy of the author. The excerpts are from that copy. I am voluntarily reviewing this title. *
This was the final book in the trilogy and I am voluntarily reviewing an advanced copy of this book.
Meredith has been left with a shattered heart but she finally has some control over her life and is determined to do things her way from this point on, deciding her fate in a way that could cause her demise and leaving her in far more danger than she ever was in when she was with Michael. What is her Fate and will Michael let her in enough to be the one for him after the events that they have shared?
Michael and his twin have both been broken by their past and childhood and the life that they have chosen to live but Meredith was different she has got under his skin and he knows that he can’t let her in but will the decisions he has made come back to haunt him in a way he never saw coming?
This was a great end to the trilogy and a little on the darker side for this author. I have read the previous books but as they weren’t ARCs I have yet to review them. 4.5* but these books are not safe and a little different from the any of her books that I have previously read.
I love this author! She is so good with her storylines! Some of her books are funny and hot, and this one was a serious drama filled book. So many twists and turns. This is book 3 and the conclusion of this series. Michael is a gorgeous sexy man, he is not the romantic type, because he doesn’t do relationships. He is a for hire killer and also has revenge list. He and his brother Trevor run the business. What a crazy and sad storyline this book has. Meredith is the only daughter of a billionaire and her father is an evil jerk! I loved that Michael and Meredith got together, they are perfect for each other. They have been traumatized throughout life and I liked that they end up together. 💕😊
This series is so similar with another series I started reading recently. Correct me if I’m wrong, but these books have almost the same substance as the first 2 books written by J. A. Redmerski from In the company of killers series. I enjoyed them nonetheless, but I felt like I knew a lot of things before reading each of them. However, I recommend these short novellas.
Wow! This book was the cherry on top of a dark, decadent chocolate sundae! This picks up where Queen of Lies ends and holy heck, once it started it never slowed down!
I’m not going to go into the plot because to say anything would give it away. I will say that Meredith and Michael both have moved to the top of some of my favorite characters list. All that Meredith has experienced leading up to this book, and following her into it, can’t do anything but evolve into her becoming an even stronger heroine than she previously was. She’s definitely not in Kansas anymore and when trouble comes calling, she has to take action.
Michael is an anti-hero that remains true to character - no spoiler here, he tells us that up front in book one. I absolutely loved all the dark places within him, those that were wounded and those that simply made up who he was. I can’t remember ever reading about another hero quite like Michael.
Like the previous books, this has a few twists and turns. I have to confess, I was unsure how this author was going to wrap up, not only all the drama that Michael and Meredith are embroiled in, but their relationship as well. I was afraid the end was going to leave me unhappy, completely unsatisfied, and ready to throw my Kindle. I should never have doubted this author’s talent. This was more than satisfying as it ended in the only way it possibly could.
I’d love to see a book about Michael’s brother, Trevor. Crossing my fingers that happens. But until then, you have two choices: Option A - ignore this series and miss out on all the dark deliciousness it holds or; Option B - snatch this series up as quickly as possible and allow Whitney G. to take you into the new world she’s been hiding from her fans.
This is the exciting conclusion to Michael and Meredith’s story it is action packed. At the end of the last instalment, they had parted ways and Meredith was weighing up her next move – to listen to Michael’s instructions or not… Michael hasn’t looked back since he left Meredith behind but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t had her on his mind every day. On a whim he decides to check in on the plans he made for her only to find out things have not gone as he planned so once again this frustrating woman has thrown his life of course. As they both consider their next moves, Meredith puts a proposal of sorts to Michael, something he was not expecting but something that definitely interests him. This was a fast paced, thrilling conclusion to this addictive trilogy.
I devoured Legacy of Lies in one sitting. It was awesome. There were twists, turns and sexy times. I enjoyed Meredith and Michael's journey and recommend it.
Least favorite from the series it was rushed and predictable. NO character development and from book 1, I wanted to see more of Michael and Meredith’s relationship being developed but unfortunately I didn’t see that. This isn’t the WORST book I’ve read because as you can tell I did not mark it as ‘did not finish’ or gave it a 1 Star. Overall, I would say this series wasn’t anything special and definitely not memorable. But it wasn’t the worst series I’ve read and I don’t hate it.
First off I Trigger Warning! This book does contain sensitive topics
First of all let me emphasize that this series is a Fast paced series and if you are not okay with that then you will NOT like the series.
Let me just say I don’t understand why this is a series? It could have been a one book novel instead of being divided into 3 books with just 200 pages each.
Nonetheless I still enjoyed reading this series because the plot was really good.
Meredith, I wish we’d met under different circumstances. I wish I didn’t have to do this to you, but I have to. It’ll all make sense in the end. —M
