What a thrilling read

Wow I have went through all kinds of emotions reading this and it wasn’t all nice , Peter Black went through through too much and I can understand why he is perfect at being an Assassin , he reminds me of the Movie the Accountant, although his symptoms aren’t as obvious I’d say he is on the Spectrum ( Aspergers maybe)

I actually enjoyed reading about him as a boy it was a tough upbringing and it brought tears in my eyes, the way he was treated was just too much 💔 and this made him a feared assassin wherever he went at a very young age which is the exiting part.

Everything in this book was just brutal and there are lots of triggering incidences.

It’s a fast paced , jaw clenching, blood curdling, heartbreaking and action filled story and I enjoyed it (well not everything 😅, there parts that were too painful for me to read)

I’m glad I picked this up 😊

If I could give it a higher rating I would. The characters are complex & fully developed. The action scenes will keep you on the edge of your seat. David Archer & Vince Vogel have written a fast paced, finely crafted action thriller that I couldn’t put down. I can’t wait for their next book together.

If you can make it through detailed descriptions of rape, child abuse, and pedophilia by all means, give it a read.

For me it was too much. Deeply disturbing. I understand the authors were trying to show the difficulty/brutality of the main character’s upbringing as he was transformed into an assassin, the horror of his work, and the evil in the world. All packed into one book, though, I just found it over the top.

I also feel like I’ve read the story before. In fact, as I was reading it, I had to go check my list of books I’ve read to make sure I hadn’t. It’s gritty for sure, but reminiscent of many of the other nearly impossible characters who can sustain a myriad of injuries, yet never die.

I know what genre I was reading. I understand all that. That’s on me. Again, this is just one person‘s opinion.

I have to say, even though this was a a co- author collaboration, it is one of the best David Archer books I’ve read.
It is so exciting and addictive I had to read it till the early hours.
It’s that good. No spoilers but it beats Bond, Bourne and Reacher, don’t pass on this one.
You won’t be disappointed.

This was a solid action thriller that sounds exactly as you think. Just the trials and tribulations of being an assassin.

Interesting. A Bit Different From The Author’s Previous Works

I’ve been a long time fan of David Archer’s books, and this one is, to say the least, “different”. It seems, to me a bit “stilted” but I’ll give the next release a chance.

If you’re squeamish this isn’t for you. There are a great many scenes which may upset anyone with a weak stomach.

I cautiously recommend this book.

Way too long of a book over 100 chapters

I read this book all the way to chapter 80.
I would of kept reading, but by the time the main character was getting shot at for no reason I could figure. I was lost.

One other thing I didn't care for was the raping of a young man.
I won't read any more books from tis author.

gay porn

If you like gay porn you will love this book! It ruined all the good parts for me.
To long and drawn out to keep my attention. All I could do was a fast skim thru of all the parts I did not want to hear about in graphic detail.

Much better than I expected, I was expecting another mass produced action book where the hero does ridiculously stupid and obvious things, nearly dies but defeats the evil doers and survives, this book is some of that but with a difference, it is written more like a novel, really worth the read, I have just purchased the second book.

Really enjoyed this one, kind of took an unexpected twist midway, but story was good. Peter Black is a very likeable badass. Archer & Vogel brought an action packed story come to life, and Adam Grupper does an awesome narration. Just what the Dr. ordered for me!

What a ride, non-stop page turning actuon

Plots, sub-plits, back stabbing, double agent, you name it. A great well developed story and characters. If you like Bourne, you will love this, a must read!

Tldr: it descended rapidly into silliness.

There are a bajillion books like this type. It’s about a lone wolf melancholy older guy who works as an assassin. I read these because they are quick distractions.

Clearly there’s a suspension of disbelief to appreciate these books. But when the action ramped up, this book got dumb fast.

Sniper fights in the middle of the US that don’t get a police response? If that’s not dumb enough, how about explosions and rolling gunfights without consequence. Or how the ‘bad guys’ amazingly pick out the protagonist’s vehicle in a crowded environment.

The smart part of my brain begged me to stop earlier. I wish I’d listened sooner.

Ranks with the best of the genre: Flynn, Thor, Ludlum, Hagberg, etc...

One of the best of the spy/assassin genre!!! This fits quite nicely alongside Vince Flynn, Brad Thor, David Morrell, David Hagberg, Robert Ludlum, etc. Excellent attention to character development, details of the tradecraft, believability, and pacing.I will be reading this series through as it is unquestionably one of the best of this genre I have read in a while. Thanks for a thoroughly enjoyable read Mr.Archer and Mr. Vogel!

Too Much

I was not sure, in the least bit, whether this was going to be a sensational first in the series kind of novel. So I had to wonder, but about midway through these pages my thoughts began to turn to disappointment. Our assassin began to take on super hero status, doing truly unbelievable stuff and yet surviving with few consequences. Then these activities became even more beyond the pale. As I continued through the narrative if felt as if more storyline was just being added in order to fill the holes in the plot.

If I could add i/2 a star, I would. The ending was not even close to what I was expecting. I'm glad the story continues in the next book, but when you've read over 500 pages, you sort of think you're about to get to the end!!!

A great start to a fast-paced story!

Great character development and a tight plot kept this exciting story moving along really well. It could use just a *little* more polishing to really make it shine, but I am already looking forward to the next installment.

I just could not get into it

I read this book, but it took me two weeks. I kept hoping it would improve, but my expectations were never met. And I have read many David Archer books and loved every one! I will go back and read this again, but I will wait awhile.

Good but not great

There is a great deal to like about this book. The lead character is very intricate and immensely likeable: an assassin with deep emotions, feelings and a conscience. The action portion of the plot is excellent and exciting throughout the novel. The majority of the narrative keeps the reader engaged and thrilled with wonderful tracts of pulse pounding thrills. I applaud this novel for not sparing the reader the raw sense of loss and despair as some lead characters meet an untimely end. I do look forward to continuing the Peter Black series as I feel the story line has a great latitude to expand on the stories' foundation.

My critique lies in spending several chapters of backstory explaining a distant relationship to make a connection in the present story.

As an aside: if you have no medical knowledge, please do not write stupidity. Please allow me to expound for a moment. A single arm bar fighting maneuver can not cause a fracture(note to the author: a broken bone and fracture are one and the same), a joint dislocation and a random ligament tear. You would not use Zoloft and Paxil for PTSD because the combination would likely cause a fatal syndrome. If you have a bullet embedded in muscle there is no reason to add to the damage by yanking it out with your dirty fingers. But I may stand corrected, because the day after the bullet is manually removed and the wound is cauterized and sutured, our hero is up and dancing. RIDICULOUS!
Read the book, as it is mostly good and suspend some sense of reality for the portions that are nonsensical.

4.5 stars

This is a tremendously dark thriller with a "retired" assassin as the protagonist. It uses the fairly common trope of a young boy being taken into a brutal training program and doing nothing but training to be an assassin for many years.

In this case, the protagonist, while trying to live a life largely outside of being an assassin, is coerced into taking several jobs by the representative of a hidden power. During that process, the assassin tries to solve problems for his neighbors, against the wishes of the shadowy employer.

The character work here is excellent. There are several memorable supporting characters, whose complex relationships drive much of the plot. And the abusive upbringing of the protagonist has many of the sorts of problems in his personal life that one might expect from that background. And the transformation of several of the characters from beginning to end of the book is believable, if often heartwrenching.

The plot allows both the protagonist and antagonist to use their formidable skills to full effect, and neither gets easy wins. The results of choices made by both sides are shown unflinchingly, which makes for a very dark overall tone. The ending of the book is not exactly triumphal, but it's very satisfying, given what went before.

The only thing keeping this from being a true five-star read for me, is the grim nature of the story. That nature is appropriate, but it's not something that I especially want to read regularly. That said, this book is highly recommended and I'll definitely be continuing it. Once I have enough time to get over the first book.

A Different Kind of Assassin Book.

This book gives a background of how Peter was trained as an assassin, all that was done to him in making the knowledge stick. Peter didn’t have anything in his life that could be called normal. Drug user mother, welfare system later abused him and the CIA trainer that put him through one nightmare after nightmare, but he didn’t know the difference. He was never around kids or family after he was elven years old. The authors did a good job of working his past and present together so you can understand Peter’s progression to the present. It was really hard to figure out how he truly functions in the present with his background of not being around people in his teenage years. The authors did a good job of describing and working the characters in and making them function. The book makes you think about how Peter’s life was put together. You roll with the characters on liking them and not liking them. Some of the book is hard to read, like what happens to the girls in Wilson’s basement. Overall this is a good book and well worth reading. There is a lot of violence to go through. Read and enjoy.

I almost never write reviews—especially bad ones, because I feel bad about it. But this had consistent issues that made it feel like it wasn’t edited at all. Grammatical things (signs instead of sings, duel instead of dual, etc), continuity things (a kid is five and then she’s seven—no time passed, a kid is nine and then seven, getting names wrong [character who just died is referenced as alive then fixed a couple pages later with a different name]), and things that felt like someone’s notes that never got fleshed out. I felt like I was reading screenplay notes?

To the substance, it had a decent premise, and the flashbacks were well done and easily distinguished, but it was just doing too much. Everything was too over the top.

I read it while sick, and it was intensely readable, so I’ll say that for it, but I feel like there’s better popcorn out there for when you need it. I’m really surprised by the ratings here. By about the two thirds mark I was complaining to a friend constantly.

Another winner

I read quite a few books a month. Thrillers are the main stay of my library. Sub genres like assassin, espionage and special ops are all my favorites. I'm so glad to have found David Archer a few years back with his Noah Wolf series. When I had run out of authors (reading to fast and if an author or book does not grab me in the first 2 chapters I will leave it, may come back but...) Even if one of the author's I follow who dive into different genres does not grab me I still come back to my favorites. Archer is one. Vogel with him great team. I may look into Vogel alone next. This was a great entryway into a new series. Keep it up boys. Together you have a fan for life. Alone well I need to read Vogel as a stand alone. But from there likes of this I think I have another one to follow.

Great start to a new series!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this anti-hero thriller but I was pleasantly surprised. The writing was good with short chapters in Robert Parker style, the dialogue felt real and the plot, although using a lot of old tropes still left a good suspenseful read. It has a lot of dark elements to the MC and to victims however it doesn't take away from the story but adds to it. It's a good airport read and I found myself wanting to know what happens to the MC in the sporting cast. I'm glad the author wasn't afraid to kill off major characters, as it makes you uncertain as to what really can happen in the series. It's a great airport read and I look forward to book two.

Just a superior read

It's been awhile since I've read anything by David Archer or Vince Vogel. I really enjoy that style and character development. Superior Planning pays off in the "end game" & Peter shows just how it can be the difference in saving a life.
I guess I would have changed some of the outcomes but the last one third of the book was a "spell-binder" and I needed to finish it before I could put it down.
If you are looking for an offering with many genre's, I recommend this book with 5 stars. I will search for
others.

Couldn't put it down

I read the Orphan X series, the Reacher series, the Gray Man series, and many others. It's rare to find authors whose books grab you like this one did, and so I applaud the work of David Archer and Vince Vogel in bringing us this new character. What an exceptional piece of work. The writing is superb and within minutes, the reader is lost in the adventure and story of Peter Black.

I am so happy I've found your work. Thank you for your hard work, you make reading such a pleasure.

Gripping storyline.

The story of a child who has been abandoned by his family and lives in an abusive orphanage who is rescued by someone who has no intention of giving him a loving family home, instead she trains him to be the most feared assassin in the world over the next few years.
His life is turned around when he gets a contract to kill 3 people who don't look to have anything in common, but end up being linked in an awful way that brings death and destruction to everyone involved.
A truly unique storyline that once I started reading I had a hard time putting it down.

Full circle

What an amazing journey I’ve been on. I really feel I have traveled the world across many years. It’s been intriguing.
There were moments of terror. There were moments of joy, very few but they were such precious moments.
The emotions were so real and the thrill of turning each page with another adventure waiting was captivating.
I loved every word and felt in tune with every character. Utterly impressed!
Get this book…download it…whatever you do but read it if you want to immerse yourself in a well crafted adventure!

A kindle read that I should have skipped. My favorite genre but a big disappointment.

Peter Black has a myriad of disguises/names/personas as he is hiding from his former employer-CIA.

He takes contracts through a handler but the latest one is a mystery. No one knows how they found him but he escapes multiple attempts on his life but not without collateral damage. How did he not know who sold him out?

His upbringing is beyond unusual, the storyline bizarre and nasty and one I won't be continuing.

WILD

This novel had more “wild” twists and turns than the road to Lake Louise in Canada! I loved the characters, the drama and the psychology woven into this “wild” adventure. Burden of the Assassin by David Archer goes into the top 8 of my books for the year! If your able to suspend a touch of your reality and ride with the story line you’ll enjoy this read. I liken the adventure to that of Edgar Rice Burroughs “Tarzan” adventures! Enjoy!

Absolutely wonderful

It's a dark story about a young kid who is trained to be a US government assassin for the CIA and then goes into private life as an assassin for hire. It's full of terrible people who have done some extremely nasty stuff and are paying hundreds of thousands to get rid of those who could expose them. Its also full of backstabbing and dirty dealing.
Peter is part bad guy, part lost child, and very deadly. Almost a more dangerous Jason Bourne.
