A death on the dance floor. A magical time vortex. And a two-decades old murder… what’s a witch to do?
Being a secret witch in 1926 is hard enough without your dance partner dying in the middle of the Charleston. The police get so suspicious about that sort of thing. Lady Joanforth Eldritch would love to stick around in Roaring Twenties London to clear her name, but when she jumps into a time vortex to chase an evil sorcerer, she ends up in 1906!
Lady Joanie's magic is weaker in the past, but thankfully charming young copper, Charlie, knows a few tricks of his own - like how to make the silverware disappear and how to pick a lock! Their only way home is to help a suffragette solve a mysterious murder, and recapture the magical gemstones before the bad guy gets to them. And that's just the beginning...
Join this dashing duo as they travel - and flirt - their way through each decade of the twentieth century, meeting celebrities, solving murders, and having some jolly good fun along the way. Part One contains three novellas: 1906, 1916, and 1923.
Thought history was boring? Think again and jump into the first instalment of this historical cozy mystery, A Witch in Time Solves Nine!
This story takes you back in time to 1906, 1916 and 1923 respectively as Joanforth and Detective Charlie try and solve murders in Edwardian England - with political and societal ideals trying to thwart them along the way!
With Joanie's clever magic (and Uncle Frog's help with his magic time machine), they attempt to overthrow the evil Lord Vilnius, as well as attempting to solve the murders. This is a truly magical and gripping read, where you will enjoy being back in those days and times.
If (as I have) you've been enjoying Rosie Reed's delightful English Village Cozy mysteries series, then you'll love this spin-off series, which concentrates on Evie's sassy and sanguine grandmother Lady Joanforth Eldritch.
In this book, there are actually three different stories - where Lady Joan (ably assisted by DC Anderson) travel through time to recover the precious and powerful Magical Jewels that need to be found and kept out of the hands of the evil Lord Vilnius... who is also desperate to get his hands on them first. m
What follows are three wonderfully crafted and entertaining murder mysteries, set in 1906, 1916 and 1923 respectively. The combination of solving a murder each time, magical powers, some choice historical facts and even some cameo appearances from characters (who are destined to become famous in the real world) makes for a highly engaging and enjoyable read.
I loved all the little details and facts sprinkled throughout these three short stories, and the character of Uncle Frog with his ingenious Victorian whirring time machine is a delightful concept.
I thoroughly enjoyed each of the stories here - looking forward to seeing what Lady Joanforth gets up to next - and where and when that might be!
loved this book. This author has decided that solving one murder case isn't enough for her characters and she gets them to solve four in different era's of time too and it's even set up to solve even more. Yeah!! This is a spin off from the author's highly entertaining English Village Witch Series and features one of the more colourful characters. Lady Joanforth Eldritch has the talent like her granddaughter of solving murders but instead of it taking place all in one place, Joanie gets sucked into history to solve three very different cases. A long with her sidekick the hunky young policeman. The author has obviously done a lot of research to make there journey not only entertaining but a real adventure and one that is easy to picture. I also like that a few famous people from history make cameos appearances in the story. The four murders do get solved but the bigger problem of stopping Lord Vilnius ( if you have read the other series you will also recognise) continues throughout all the cases and into the next. The book is set up like three novellas but all contained in one book, I knew the murder and motive for one. I don't normally like time travel because it gets confusing when the characters end up in the same time as themselves but this story actually worked well and I wish I could travel to the future to get the next book.
When a man is stab on the dance floor and a young policeman is questioning Lady Joanforth Eldritch his dance partner, her uncle is attack by Lord Vilnius. He wants the nine magical jewels hidden by the magic community and the only way to find them is to steal the controls and travel back in time. Joanie and Charlie follow him and end up in 1906 just in time to witnesses a murder. With her magic weak the only way to get home is to find Lord Vilnius and get the controls back, best him to the magical jewel and solve the murder. The lady of the household is receiving threatening letters for her out spoken views but it is the maid who gets killed. Was it mistaken identity? They catcher the killer and find the gem but instead of going home they end up in 1916 with blimps flying over London they take shelter in a bakery cellar. Only to find the German owner has been murdered by the morning. Can they find the killer, the controls and the magical gem? The next stop is 1923 and this time they end up on the set of as film and they have to solve the murder of the leading lady, Cleopatra who was bitten by a snake. This time they have the added problem of trying to avoid Joanie herself who is also on the set. Can the pair finally get home? before they act on there attraction because it never works between a witch and a policeman? And if course there is the original murder that started the adventure, will it get solved? Three good murder mysteries makes up one big magical adventure. I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntarily left this review
In the box set of A Witch in Time Saves Nine by Rosie Reed Lady Joanforth Eldritch travels to the years 1906, 1916 and 1923 to look for magical jewels which had been scattered throughout time by the Council of Magical Beings to prevent their use by the Magical Beings of Evil. Fortunately Lady Joanie has Detective Constable Charlie Anderson along on these time travel trips to help her. I found it quite entertaining when Lady Joanie and Charlie run into characters who will later become quite famous. The characters in this book are very likable and I found this to be a fun read. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’, they say, but in this case you can. Behind the gorgeous cover lies a fantastic book. The plot is unique and the characters are delightful - I loved it from start to finish. Highly recommended!
A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author. All of the above opinions are my own.
Now we meet Lady Joanforth Eldrich soon after her broken engagement to Lord Vilnius. It’s 1926. She’s dancing with someone & he gets stabbed. So the police question her. Her uncle has built a time machine & Lady Joan & CD Charlie Anderson get sent back to 1906! They are taken in by a kindly lady & at tea meet the very man she’d been dancing with. A complicated mystery & lots of accidents happen to the lady of the house. Yes, Lady Joan & DC Charlie work it all out & as a side issue start collecting magical gems that the evil Lord Vilnius is after. Then a hop to 1916! Here they are in a bakery owned by a German who gets himself killed!! It seems all a bit odd to Lady Joan & DC Charlie & they manage to sort out who murdered the baker. Lord Vilnius appears to say he’s got the next magic gem & then disappears taking DC Charlie with him to 1923! Lady Joan manages to join DC Charlie on a film set. Within a short while the leading lady playing Cleopatra is murdered by snake poison from a non venomous snake???!!! One big problem with this set is Lady Joan of the real age keeps on appearing & the time travelling one has to stay clear of her. The 3rd magic gem is in Cleopatra’s headdress & Lady Joan does manage to get her hands on it but that dastardly Lord steals it from her. In the end she & DC Charlie manage to get the two gems & the time machine controls from Lord Vilnius & get home. There they find that some how he has abducted her uncle & her dog. Soon we will be off to the future. A very enjoyable read.
A Witch in Time Solves Nine by Rosie Reed takes us back in time in more ways than one! It’s an English Village Historical Cozy in a box set with three stories that take place in 1906, 1916, and 1923.
The box set starts and ends in 1926, which is the present for Joanie and some of the characters we meet. We time travel and get to know a younger Joanie, who knows how old she really is since she’s a witch.
The books have a nice flow, and we meet up with a few historical figures before they become famous. Each book has a murder that needs to be solved, along with some darkness, troubles, and clues. The murderer is never whom it would seem, and Joanie and her human sidekick Charlie partake in a lot of sleuthing and piece the clues together to help solve the crimes. Since Charlie is a copper in his present life, he’s good to have on hand.
I like how the story gives glimpses of some of the places and characters we’ve met in the English Village Witch Cozy series I’ve come to enjoy, which in essence takes place after those in this cozy historical set, of which there will be more. It also gives background information on the Beings of Magic and Beings of Evil which rounds out the story nicely.
I liked how each story concluded and the loose ends tied up while giving hints of what was to come. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Reed’s books.
Ms. Reed is an author who writes tales with a paranormal bent and lots of witches, warlocks, and others with magic. If this is your cup of tea, which they drink a lot of since the stories are all set in England, you should settle down with a cuppa as you enjoy these tales.
If you find yourself in need of cheering up, a Rosie Reed novel will always do the trick! This new series is brilliant with excellent period drama and lovely details of fashion and politics! Joanne and Charlie go crashing through time, solving murders whilst also trying to prevent Lord Vilnius from achieving his dastardly goal of collecting all the gems of power so he can rule the world! Along the way Jeanie also realises that Charlie is more than just a handsome face! A delightful read, I simply cannot wait for more to be published!
The stories are fun and quick to read and the cast is great. There are quite few inconsistencies and historical errors that had me put down the reader few times, but it is still an entertaining light read. I will probably read more books in this series, but not in a rush.
