The third in the Primis Vipris series is here and there is a lot to enjoy about it. Having been thrust into a world some fifty years in their future would have been disorientating enough for Roland and Oliver, but the minor fact that they have released dragons from Camelot to modern Earth and they’ve been breeding and rampaging for all those years. In the interim, groups to combat the dragons have taken important roles in the world, but as the twins found out last time round, E.D.E.N. don’t necessarily have what is best for the world at the top of their agenda. Will M.O.L.E be any better?
One thing I will say is that this is a slow moving novel, particularly to begin with. Our group of heroes have been separated after yet another disaster, and well over half the novel covers their journeys to find the secretive organisation M.O.L.E. who they hope will prove more ethical than E.D.E.N. When we finally get to them, the pace ratchets up significantly and it’s almost non stop action.
The journeys of both groups did allow for the world building to be significantly expanded on and I appreciated the view of how dragons being unleashed has irreparably changed the world. Dragon worshipping cults being the least of it. I would have liked more attention to be given to M.O.L.E. - E.D.E.N. got a lot of page time in the last novel, exploring their organisation and motivations. I was looking forward to seeing the same for the alternative organisation, but because they are located so late in the novel, this felt a tad rushed.
I enjoyed the character development throughout and how the characters bounce off each other. Oliver and Roland spend much of the novel separated, which means both of them spend a lot of time with the Knights and that allows for some different character interactions and banter.
All in all, this is well written if a tad slow. I’ll look forward to number 4.
