The Joshua Trees: A Collection of Incomplete Poems and Random Thoughts

Rate this book
A sweeping journey of the subconscious mind.Profoundly personal. An outstanding mosaic of literary and artistic prose that brutally and soulfully uncovers the voyage we all take, known as the human condition. Spectacular and somber. Enlightened and haunting. It's like the root canal you never knew you needed until blissful relief arrives, once it's all said and done.

The Joshua Trees are blowing in the wind, yet remain cerebrally indelibly, disturbingly, numbingly, lovingly within us.

first of all, thank you so much for Daniel Nieves @thejoshuatreesbooks for reaching out to me and giving me a chance to read a collection of beautiful poems.

To be honest, I'm not a fan of poem or collection of it; in my personal opinion, a poem should have a connection to the reader, whether emotional or physical, to make it more meaningful and not just a bunch of aesthetic words thrown together in a rhymes. Had my fair share with few of it and it's not pleasant.

But,

There's a different story for The Joshua Trees

Emotional connection I felt after reading was unreal; Every thoughts that were poured into this was a personal experience and I relate so much; it definitely brought up some nostalgia in me. Remembering the times when my depression and anxiety went through the roof; wrote down thoughts, feelings, everything that need to be released inside of me was the only way to save myself from drowning deeper.

Also beside the poems, I also fell in love with the art; simple yet perfectly represent what the books all about. And the explanation of Joshua Tree.. *chef kisses*

There were two poem I claimed as my favorite, one is :

" They always say when it rains it pours
But they never really tell you
How bad the flood really is
They just try to sell you an umbrella"

(When you thought they care because they care and protect you but in reality, they care just for the sake of attention and self-image they created in their head; and don't give a cent or two with what's happening inside of you)

and the other is :
"Sometimes when you flip a page
It's the beginning of a new story
Or just the continuation of an old one
It could be a new sentence
It could be a new paragraph
It could be a new character
Or it could be the end of a story
You never know until flip the page
But you always have to flip the page"

(Eventhough it's dark and you couldn't see the light at the end of tunnel, you always have to move; step forward, take the risk and move)

At the point in my life now where this collection of works feels incredibly personal. I could have comprehended it 10 years ago, got the message and said yes I felt something, but now Just a few pages in I relate on such a strong level its bewildering. By no means am I poetry reader, I love a good HEA, but this book was beautiful, heartfelt and aesthetically pleasing. It feels like a collection of the authors inner most thoughts, things that we as readers would keep to ourselves or be to ashamed to voice, but at the same time we relate. As I was reading I was trying to find a passage or page that spoke to me more than the restwas a struggle, because I really enjoyed reading this. Given my work in mental health and my own struggles, the take this book has is incredible, it doesn't feel superficial and empty. of course when you get sent a book about anxiety and depression, it puts you on the back- foot thinking "is this the right read for me or will I even enjoy it", Well funnily enough, yes and Yes. And thats without even considering the fact its poetry. It feels like a love story, one so many people can relate, a love lost, a love looking to be found or found again, but ultimately hope. I highly recommend The Joshua Trees, 5/5.

This first collection of poetry, explores anxiety and
depression, but also hope. It is named 'The Joshua
Trees' as, as Daniel says, they are 'a symbol survival,
resilience and perseverance.’
The book was such a compelling read, that I read it all
in one sitting. The poems are really well written and tie
together perfectly as a collection. The addition of some
illustrations is also a lovely touch.
I found some of the poems really touching and many of
them explore universal themes that talk about the
human experience, that we can all relate to. For
example one of my favourite quotes from the book is
'It's hard being a dreamer in a place where nightmares
are born.
It's a beautiful book and one I will return to on Autumn
nights, when I am tucked up inside under a blanket,
mug of hot chocolate in hand.
The poems are both sad, but uplifting, and remind us
of the resilience of the human soul and how we all cling
to hope even in our darkest times.

Book: The Joshua Trees
Author: Daniel Nieves
Genre: Poetry
Rating: 5

Little book full of emotions, you can feel the love that flows through every page, you can feel the pain of the soul, you can feel the fight against the monsters inside of you. Maybe these monsters, are you? Who knows?
I love to read poetry but I don't read it often.
Here you can find pretty illustrations, it helps to make this book more atmospheric for the reader. While I read The Joshua Trees, I made many annotations. This book talks directly to you about how love can hurt and how strong you can love someone in your life. I think it is amazing. Author uses beautiful thoughtful metaphors and imaginary language so you can see and feel these poems.
I felt this book as someone is telling me about his life and then just walks away without even saying his name, cozy feelings. I want to recommend this book for those who love a slightly depressed mood and poetry.
I can't wait for the author's next book, The Acacia Trees.

I'm still pretty new to poetry and I'm still pretty bad at dissecting it so I hope my general thoughts will convey just how amazing this collectin is. It's rare that I find a poem that really resonates with me on a deeper level, let alone a whole collection. There were many times where I had to just stop and let a poem sit because it was like I was reading my own feelings in a poem. These may have been incomplete but they work so well because these feelings radiating off the page aren't complete they're open and constantly shifting and changing. I just really loved this collection!

The Joshua Trees is a collection of poetry and thoughts that capture emotions in a surreal way. Nieves has the ability to display emotions of depression and anxiety through words quite carefully.

Poetry is the window to our emotional soul, and these ones can be felt deeply by every reader. I was truly captivated by how personal each poem felt. It is so important for our emotions to be represented and this poetry does just that.

This is one book that all readers should experience at least once.

Thank you @thejoshuatreesbook for reaching out to me about your new poetry book! ☺️

When describing his poetry to me, he said that he wanted to capture the feelings of anxiety and depression with a positive undertone. I think he did exactly that! I really, really enjoyed reading this and the artwork is beautiful!

There’s a page in the beginning that describes why Joshua Trees are such a huge focus in this book. I loved the reasoning behind it 💗

Once I started reading this book of poems and thoughts I felt so connected. It's really rare for me to find people who have the same thoughts as me. I loved how the more you read the more you want to keep reading. I am glad I read the book because it put some of my thoughts into place. I totally recommend this book it's a rainfall full of thoughts that might have cross your mind at least once in your lifetime.

I’m thankful for the author for reaching out so that I can review his work.
Poetry isn’t my strongest topic of conversation, so I hope I’m able to convey my thoughts appropriately.

I decided I would highlight a few passages that I really enjoyed, ones that I felt spoke to me. I ended up saving about 85% of the book.

For anyone who struggles with depression, anxiety, obsessive thoughts….I think you’ll find a kinship within these pages.

REVIEW:

Though poetry isn’t something I commonly read, I did enjoy the different format of writing. Some pieces were excellent, and I felt connected to immediately. Other pieces were not as strong for me, and at times it felt a little dishevelled, and misplaced. Overall, I thought it was a decent exploration of emotions and thoughts that many of us have.

This book of short poems and thoughts is a great representation of all the different aspects of mental health and mental illness. The poems contain substance abuse, hopelessness coupled with moments of clarity and hopefulness for the future. It was a refreshing read & I look forward to seeing more of Daniel’s work in the future!

This book was a quick read with some deep and powerful thoughts. I didn’t realise the extent of my own thoughts and feelings until I saw them written on the page in front of me. I even ended up highlighting poems that resonated with me, and I felt inspired by them. I also thought the pictures were cute and I love that style of art.

Poetry is not my usual genre, but I found this collection of poems to be very good! They were thought provoking and expressed raw emotion. The author is relatable and wrote in a way that I understood where they were coming from. I’ve felt some of the same emotions written about in this collection of poems. Thank you for writing such an expressive collection of poems!!

If you’re tired, overworked, and you feel like you’re alone- Daniel Nieves sees you!

These poems not only move you; they represent each of us that is struggling with mental health due to the daily hustle of our busy lives. They are touching, emotive, and beautifully written. If you like poetry (or even if you don’t), I recommend this one!

A beautiful collection of poetry that explores the raw emotions of going through , depression , anxiety, substance abuse , and feeling your lowest but making it out. I appreciated that even though most of the topics that were explored were heavy there were still positive undertones. It was truly an experience to read this book of poems.

Great collection of poetry. Seeing someone else's thoughts on paper and getting to read them and feel them, is like therapy to an overworked mind.

Reminds me of the style of Rupi Kaur. I love how we switch from depression, anxiety, love, curiosity and gratitude, it is showing life and all its colours.

I'm not normally one to read poetry, let alone topics about depression and anxiety. But I must say this was a really good read, I thoroughly enjoyed it! The author wrote down thoughts that I also have about everyday life. His writing is very thought provoking.
