Between the Stars

Rate this book
From USA Today bestselling author Shey Stahl comes a gripping, emotional, brother’s best friend romance that will leave you desperate for more.

My life is perfect. Dream wedding days away, a mansion in the hills of Nashville, a promising career in pediatric nursing. And not to mention, a wealthy southern groom willing to do anything for me. But he’s not the one who paints a scene of passion. He’s not the cocky, arrogant, and very much forbidden man my father despises. He’s not my brothers best friend. He’s not the one who gave me years and let me go just as easily. And he’s certainly not the one I’m with now as thunder rolls through the canyons and his voice dances along exposed curves.

I look up, the sky burning brighter, stronger, like his love and I find myself torn between the stars. As the light fades, the smell of smoke in my hair, the flames piercing through a chalky night, his darkness stains my heart.

“I’ll never stop when it comes to you.” I watch his face, the fall of his eyes, and I’m met with the dark hallow that haunts me.

He’s not the one I should pick, but he’s the only one who knows how to kiss me without touching me.

We were shades of love, written in the stars and tethered to the shore.

Until the cracks in our plan destroyed it all.

The romance of Jace and Abigale gives the full meaning to the famous phrase 'It's complicated'. They tortured themselves for years before finally having the guts to trust their feelings and fight for each other. They were at times stubborn, infuriating, foolish, mired in too much toxic silence, but I could not hate them because somehow their feelings for each other felt genuine. Their main problem I think was that they were still so young, afraid of what may lie in their future. At 24, they were adults but yet still on the brink of maturity. I am glad that in the end they still took the plunge, even if they were scared.

I am not saying that Abigale was perfect, far from it (I hated how she could not have the courage to end the engagement by herself and instead counted on others), but Griff was a damn piece of work. A real pervert narcissist I am sure. Abigale got lucky Jace saved her. Who in their right mind would force on a wedding when it is so clear that the girl loves someone else? And while Jace is not perfect either, I liked him much more than Abigale's character. Despite his rough edges, he was a real guy with a pure heart and a gentle Texan charm.

Concerning the writing style, it was disconcerting at times as the author chose to have the two main characters break regularly the fourth wall to speak to the reader. Not sure if this was an effective method to drive the story. Probably a me thing? Also, I am not sure if the bumbling way the text was written (e.g. going round discussing the same issues as if a resolution was not reached a few paras earlier) was on purpose, to reflect real life reactions, or only bad editing. If on purpose, it did serve well to highlight the ever floating uncertainty between Jace and Abigale (re: fears from immaturity) even if the repetitions were irritating at times.

One big reason I kept going with the book, was the way the small town atmosphere was well written by the author. It felt true and I loved the humour inserted every now and then. Although I was much confused on who was who, I loved the supporting characters and it all helped polish the small town atmosphere. My favourite secondary character is undoubtedly little Miss Sevyn. All her scenes are a hoot 😂! For example, in this scene, 3-year old Sev is bent on stealing hairs from Jace because she wants to put a spell on the one she considers her boyfren:
I don’t remember falling asleep but I must have because when I wake up, Sev is standing over me with an electric razor and smiling. “Hi.”

My heart jumps into my throat. Fuck. “What are you doing?” I dare to ask.

She grins. Awkwardly. “Nuffin.”

“Nuffin my ass.” I sit up, my heart still pounding. I glance around the room, blinking rapidly and trying to make sense of my surroundings. “Why do you have a razor?”

She hides it behind her back. “I nots know.”

“Did you have a plan?”

She nods, but doesn’t tell me it.

“Let me guess…. My hair?”

Another nod.

Fuck. I run my hand over the side of my head. Yep. She shaved it. Groaning, I sit up to see a dusting of dark hair all over the couch. “Why do you need my hair so bad?”

“To makes you my size.”

Last, may I point out how gorgeous the cover is ❤? And I loved the title too!

Absolutely loved this book!! Talk about romancing the one you're meant to be with and willing them to choose you and only you...Jace and Abbi's story is a great read! Unable to stay away from each other while growing up in a small town their world's shift when one decides to leave and the other doesn't fight to let it now happen. The bond they share can't be broke even with distance and other players in the mix ahem "Griff". From the late night face timing, sibling intervening, and impromptu muscle cars I could not put this book down! I can't wait to delve into Grady ranch again. Thank you Shey for letting us get to know these guys just a little more.

Between The Stars is another captivating story from Shey Stahl which shows at the end of the day we honestly need to follow our hearts to be the happiest, greatest versions of ourselves.

Abbi is forever trying to please everyone else, putting their needs and desires above her own. This has led her to the point when she’s engaged to a man who loves the idea of her, rather than actually being in love with her. Meanwhile deep down her heart still belongs to Jace, her childhood sweetheart and teenage secret (now a gorgeous and tattooed machinery mechanic) from her small hometown who has always regretted letting the love of his life go.

Abbi’s predicament comes to a head as she makes an impromptu trip home for Christmas. At the crossroads she has agonising choices to make and we’re lucky enough to be brought along for the emotional-roller-coaster which Shey crafts to perfection 🫶🏼

I received an ARC of Between The Stars and rate it 4.5/5 stars ⭐️ Highly recommend!!

I loved Jace and Abbi's story in Between the Stars. I have pretty much read every Shey Stahl book and she never disappoints. They are always well written with characters you fall in love with and really root for them to work out. Between the Stars was no different, I received an advance copy in exchange for a review. I started late in the evening one night and I could not put it down. I thought it was captivating. I finished in just 2 days. Jace is Abbi's brothers best friend and they have always been in each other's lives. And in some way or another they have always had feeling for each other but never could make it work. Abbi moves away and falls for a guy who is a total jerk. She ends up engaged to him but still has this pull towards Jace. However she always tries to please everyone else and feels Jace is not who she should be with. She starts to realize that she can't please everyone else she has to follow her heart. Can these two with so much history together move forward to make a future.

The course of true love rarely runs smoothly, and just because it started off as young love doesn’t make it any less real.

Main protagonists Jace and Abbi were, in ways childhood sweethearts who were very much in love with one another, however their love was one they kept hidden from others with less than a handful knowing. The love they shared wasn’t enough to keep them together at the time, Jace pushed her away, he had his reasons for doing so at the time only now a few years later it looks like he’s lost her for good when a wedding invitations turns up announcing Abbi’s impending nuptials to another man. But all it takes is one phone call from Jace to have Abbi rethinking her upcoming wedding plans, she heads home to Amarillo for a week, and it’s during that week where things begin to unravel for Abbi, but is what’s said and done enough to stop her from going ahead and marrying another man? Or will it take more drastic action for her to realise Amarillo with Jake is where she’s meant to be?

This was one fantastic book. From start to finish I was hooked, I didn’t put my Kindle down once, and when I say once I mean it, which is unusual for me. I honestly can’t remember the last book I read that held my attention the way the one did. As for the characters, they were all great, one in particular, a sassy little three year old by the name of Sevyn Rae Grady, I want to be her when I grow up. It was great being around the Grady Ranch again, finger crossed I’ll be back there soon 😉 Once again Shey you’ve been absolutely phenomenal… till next time 👋🏼

This book is amazing . I volleys between true love and the one you think you should be with. Jace is a hot mechanic and Griff is a snobby dr with a God complex. It's all about him not about Abbi. Abbi is just a sweet country girl tring to do right by her family and doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. She very much thinks of others and what they think.

This book was well written which is the only reason it got 2 stars from me. The 24 year olds seemed so incredibly young and dumb. I get it- I too was young and dumb at 24.

Abby, however, knows she’s with the wrong man and that man is a real piece of shit. For example- he rapes her right before their wedding. And yet, she still puts on the white dress and waits for her knight in shining armor to show up and object. I guess I just really didn’t like how much of a doormat abby was.

And our knight in shining armor- Jace- was drinking in so many scenes I can only imagine him at 40 with our fmc, getting drunk while she raises the kids and barely getting by working his dead end job, while she excels at her nursing job knowing her family’s future depends on her paycheck. Also- how do you drive from Texas to Tennessee straight through drinking the entire way, without getting a dui? And he’s still somehow coherent? I get that people drive drunk, but did this author need to glorify it as much as she did? Could we pretend our mmc wasn’t putting lives in danger literally every time he got behind the wheel?

I love a small town love story and even a second chance love story, but these two were well written dumb-dumbs.

I've always love Shey's books because she makes you feel everything the characters do. And this one is exactly the same as far as that goes. I'd even go to say it is even more emotionally packed than some. I would start reading and then have to stop because it felt like my heart couldn't take what would happen next. WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT? It is a HEA but there's so much in this ... a second chance love triangle with cheating. So prepare yourself for a bumpy glorious ride.

It's so hard to write a review about this book. I don't know how to rate it, because I have mixed feelings about the book. This isn't a bad thing (I think). :)

So... the story was really good. It was a second chance romance. Abbi and Jace (btw I love the names) loved each other since they were teenagers, but they weren't really together, they were friends for sure, who hooked up here and there. A few years back they seperated and lived their lives far from each other. Everything changed when Abbi was engaged and Jace got a wedding invitation.

I knew before I started reading the book that there will be cheating in it. It wasn't a problem for me, especially after I became to know Griff and his relationship with Abigal. But I didn't say that the cheating was okay, they made a mistake when they hooked up.

So I liked the storyline, I loved that it was written in alternate point of views, but I had problems with the characters.

I was angry with Abbi, how she couldn't stand up for herself. Honestly I could slap her :D But if she didn't act like she acted, Jace's actions wouldn't be so big, romantic? So maybe her behavior needed for the epic plot. :)

My biggest problem wiht Jace that he was always drinking. I understood in the beginning that he was heartbroken and lost, so he drank. But later it bothered me, he was drinking when he was with Abbi, or when he was with his friend's children. He was drunk in a lot of important event. He always had a flask with him.

The story was a perfect example that not always the smart, handsome, wealthy doctor guy the perfect for us. I think Abbi shouldn't be so indecisive. She knew who she really loved and that wasn't Griff.

Overall I liked the book, but because I didn't fall for the characters I can only give 4 *

A second chance romance with a little forbidden brother's best friend feels. So many laughs along the way to HEA!

Where to start with this one because it's such a phenomenal read. Shey worked her magic once again bringing two people you might first think are to toxic to work, but then she weaves her magic and poof you are in love and rooting for them to get that HEA.

This book was such a great read and the fact that it has reoccurring characters from "When We Met" is perfect becausethey bring so much to this story. I loved that book and this one is the perfect compliment to it. Yes you can read this as a standalone but to better understand the side characters you definitely should read "When We Met" first. I love that in everyone of her books there is this angst and a buildup that brings a ton of emotional moments but also so many laughs to lighten it up. This is an absolute must read for any reader!

Watching Jace and Abbi go from childhood friends to secret lovers was a wild ride to say the least. These two were toxic in their teens not necessarily by themselves but from others around them. Jace is the perpetuate live one day at a time never really making plans. He gets a bad wrap by Abbi's family and feels he's never good enough so he only does random hookups with her knowing he shouldn't or wouldn't be able to keep her. Abbi chases him relentlessly but ends up find another but he isn't who she needs or wants but has a family obligation weighing her decisions of finding a HEA. Lots of twist and ups and downs with these two but the perfect ending.

I had the pleasure of reading this one early and loved every minute of it. I highly recommend it to any reader who wants an amazing story of finding the one just at the wrong time. It's an amazing story with an array of emotions that will leave you satisfied at the end. A must read this year!

I first met Jace Vaughn at Barron Grady's garage, and he caught my attention. Then after spending more time with him at the garage, the Grady ranch, and Tilly's bar I knew I needed his story. Abigale Lockett, best friend to Josie, Jace's insanely hysterical twin sister and Jace's childhood sweetheart is a people pleaser. She's living the dream, finishing up school, good job lined up, and is engaged to be married. There's a slight problem though, Griffin Hemington is her fiance, but Jace Vaughn owns her heart and soul! Have you ever been told something enough times that you start to believe it's true? Well, all his life Jace has been told he's not good enough for the likes of Abigale. The question is will the connection, draw, passion, and desire between these two be enough to bring them back together and keep there where they belong? Jace's version of the grand gesture may not be typical, but I do believe that this broken, sweet, swoony dirty talkin cowboy has just the right amount of showiness to get what he wants, what's always been his...Abbi!
I couldn't wait for this story, but lord almighty it was worth the wait!!!
Now Shey, please tell me that the hilarious and crazy Josie Vaughn is getting her own story!!!

Between the Stars takes us back to the Grady Ranch where you will find the cutest little girls (Sev is such a handful and will make you literally laugh out loud) and the best of friends. The guys and girls in these Grady Ranch stories are full of life. They give you honest moments which will have you running through a variety of emotions throughout the entire book. Shey Stahl is an author whose talent captures readers from page one. This story was full of frustration but man when the heat was brought, it was pure steam. When love was on the line, the fear was evident but so was the determination.

Jace and Abby have a long history between them. From kids playing in the woods to adults still sneaking around- theirs was a love meant to be. It just takes them some time to figure it out! There are a lot of ups and downs in this book. Moments you will want to slam your kindle down. But hang on because the ride is worth it!

What a read! This book was so good.
I love it when childhood sweethearts get a second chance at happiness.
Abbi & Jace are just so perfect. Abbi had a lot of her firsts with Jace and she was so in love with him, but even as she was leaving her home town behind she couldn’t get Jace to open up to her and tell her not to go.

Years later and his family received a wedding invite to Abbi’s wedding- will Jace let the love of his life marry someone who isn’t him.
Jace is a hard working man who only ever wanted what was best for Abbi and for her not to stuck in their small town- even if deep down this is what she wants.

Abbi has never stopped loving Jace even though she is trying to move on and is marrying someone else- deep down she knows that she isn’t being true to herself.
The book takes you on a journey of love, angst, heart break and joy.

This book is a must read! Absolute ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I can always count on Shey to write a story that reaches out and grabs me in the feels. This story is about the compromises made to benefit the greater good— at the expense of true love and happiness. A girl never forgets her first love and there’s often still a piece of the girl’s heart that wonders all the “what ifs”, hoping for a chance to explore a life with that person again. As Abbi’s wedding to the stuffy doctor, Griff, approaches, Abbi finds herself drawn to the love of a boy who turned into a man she cannot forget. This book has a little something for everyone— a forever love, moderate angst, a few laughs, and a sexy mechanic who must step up his game if he intends on finally getting his girl. This is a definite feel-good book to curl up and enjoy over the weekend!

This book is a true gem and will have you feeling a full range of emotions throughout it. The H Jace and h Abbi’s love story spans from childhood to adulthood. Even though they recognize that they wanted to be together early on it never got a chance to take flight because of outside influences. Then when they are both adults, someone having the weight of family responsibility being put before true happiness causes you to wonder what will end up happening. I enjoyed reading this even though it did tied my stomach up in knots half the time. I love the fact that you get tidbits of previous characters that pop up (ex: mischievous Sev). There were plenty of tears, laughs and making new memories from this book.

LOVED!!
I love this trope! Shey has the best way of making you FEEL the characters. I always experience every emotion when reading a Shey Stahl book and Between the Stars was no different. From the very beginning, you knew that these two were meant to be together and had to trust that Shey would bring them together. THE HEAT!!! I love cocky cowboys who know when to know their sweet side to the one they love. I wanted Abbi to understand she was worth more, but it was fun experiencing Jace show her how much she was worth.
I read this book in one sitting and went back to re-read my favorite parts again. I hope we get another story about this crew because I have not had enough of them.

My goodness this books was pure angst, Jace and Abbi were indeed not gonna lie toxic for each other. They're past history had their ups and downs, but sadly the timing was unfortunately not on their side. After years apart, Abbi returns to town (engaged btw) and who does she want to see Jace of course. Though there's cheating involved which didn't bother me because Abbi's fiance is an ass. I loved the push and pull from not only themselves but friends and family who knew they belonged together. Even though many outside forces were in their way they eventually finally found their HEA and I loved every moment of it.

Having a history sometimes makes you rethink your future and that is definitely the case for Abbi. Jace and Abbi had a past, but Abbi is set to have a future with someone else. What would you choose?! Now Abbi has to make that decision and it isn’t going to be an easy one. Is everything that has been said and done enough to make her continue with her pending nuptials? Abbi typically tries to please everyone else but for once will be choose to follow her heart?! Once again Shey knocked it out of the park! I couldn’t put this book down. Love Love Love!

Oh goodness what an emotional read! Jace and Abbi's story spanned years -- from childhood til adulthood -- loads of angsty goodness, regret && an undeniable chemistry. Will Abbi go through with her impending wedding or will she realize that her heart has and will always belong to another?

I honestly could not put Between the Stars down, from beginning to end I was wholeheartedly invested in these characters and their story and I truly hope this is not the last time we visit Grady Ranch. 🧡

Abbi and Jace are school sweethearts who never got a chance to really be with each other. Abbi leaves their hometown and meets Griff a real self-centered jerk. They end up engaged but Abbi longs for Jace the boy she grew up with who's turned into a man. Now Jace has to fight to get Abbi back before its to late. This book keeps you invested the whole time. Definitely worth reading. Shey Stahl did another great job!

After reading When We Met, I was so excited to get Jace and Abbi's story. There was so much history between them, I knew it was gonna be good. And I was not disappointed!
We once again get all the familiar characters, like a new family we can fall in love with. Jace and Abbi's story is about a second chance, to get it right this time. They are perfect for each other. And their story is so beautiful; all the humor, hotness, and love. Another great story to cherish!

I absolutely love this book! Shey Stahl is the best at writing characters in a way that makes you FEEL their pain, love, and struggles. This story is full of passion, anger, fear, and humor! Through Jace and Abbi we learn that the best life is the one where you listen to your heart and follow the path that is best for you–not trying to please everyone else! This is a book that you will not be able to put down!!! It is a MUST READ!!!!

Shey Stahl has written an emotional and powerful read. This book will make you laugh and cry. But know that fate truly plays a part in everything that is done in Jace and Abbi’s story. Jace and Abbi fight a connection and the potential of a second chance even though they know they deeply love each other but left up to fate of chance love will win! Don’t miss the opportunity to read this amazing book.

Predictable

There is nothing in this book that u cannot predict. It s just a simple story boy and girl fall in love since age 6 and are always told that they r not good enough for each other. And finally they make it and marry. That's it. The writing is hilarious and good enough, but that's it. Read this book if you are bored and want a mindless read. Or rather skip it completely. Your choice 😉

Okay…good, not great

I love Shey Stahl stories and maybe she set the bar high in her other books, but this was just average. The constant yes I do, no I can’t was annoying. There was really no substance until late in the book - like the story was still developing. It was still better than other stories though. Please though, a better editor needs to be found; and, not just for the grammar, but for the story inconsistencies.

The setting, the emotions, the characters, everything clicked and made this read phenomenal! I couldn’t get enough of Sev, she’s quickly become on of my favorite characters in Shey’s books. This is a great book and a great lesson within itself that you need to live your life for you not to please others around you, no matter who those others are you. This book has tons of passion and heart and will keep you glued to its pages until the very end. With fantastic characters and a great storyline you cannot go wrong.
