Sometimes it's best not to explore the road less taken. Darkness Wakes is an anthology written by eight authors. Each story explores what can happen when someone stumbles upon and wakes an old or ancient evil.
A blend of cosmic and traditional horror. In the last days of WWII Hitler sends an expedition to find Hohlweltlehre as a means of escape to a hollow earth. They find something else.
A conflict between a girl & bullies leads to chaos as the dead rise & an old god is summoned. Ny-Lon's an assassin contracted to take out the Glitch Goddess, but the onlbeautifulre terrifying than her cult is what they're worshipping.
A rustic cabin, a beautiful lake and good friends are all the ingredients required to wake a forgotten evil. An expedition to a remote island could lead to a new pandemic. The ancestors will dine on Chaos and partake in the Blood of the spineless.
Something evil stirs under the town of Lochmere. A family vacation to a famous amusement park turns into a Satanic massacre.
Are you brave enough to find out what happens when Darkness Wakes?
If Nightmare Magazine, issue 120 tries to show that Horror Can Be Taken Seriously, this is a compilation of horror as, well, fun. My favorite was the otter story, while the final story struck me as underdone and not written as well as everything else. The quality of the stories varies a bit, and they’re united by not taking themselves too seriously. None of this is literature, but that’s not the point. It shows to good effect what even a basic anthology can bring to the table (e-reader?) in terms of quality.
In The Caverns of Madness: Nazi archeologists play a stupid game, win a stupid prize.
It Lays Screaming Under Lochmere: Exploring an idyllic haven awakens a foul force. Darkness ensues.
Bookworm: Eldritch powers and bullying turn out not to mix well, at least for the bullies.
Glitch Goddess: A cultural sanitation worker goes hunting in the Cathedral of Disillusion.
Patient Zero: Are you ready to host a little action? I mean really play host...
What Lies Beneath The Lake: College students, an isolated cabin, have I seen this movie?
Ollie The Otter Eats People: Catchy title. Serial killer meets devil otters at a water park.
Original Thirst: Vampire life is complicated, ok?
One of my favorite recent sentences:
“Dalton’s death had done nothing to assuage the bloodlust of the army of otters or the flow of otherworldly beasts of some Lovecraftian B-list that continued to bubble up from the dark corners of the water park.” (Ian Fortey, from "Ollie The Otter Eats People")
How's that for some vivid mental imagery? Anyway, go ahead and enjoy the wave pool!
