Morning light shines into the nursery, casting shadows across the pale pink walls and wooden cot in the middle of the room. She opens the door expecting to hear the soft coo of her daughter Sofia stretching herself awake. But the room is silent. The cot is empty. Her little girl has vanished…
Twelve years have passed, but Emily will never forget the night her life changed forever and she’s happy to have her daughter back beside her. A teenager now, Sofia, who was once a star student, is getting into trouble at school and she’s started asking questions about when she was a baby, but Emily can’t tell her what really happened the night she went missing. Nobody would understand why Emily did what she did, and if anyone ever found out, she could lose her daughter forever.
But when Emily catches Sofia messaging a stranger online, and as she reads the last message received, her heart pounds in her chest.
Your mother isn’t who you think she is.
Days later, Emily returns home to find the house silent. She checks every room but Sofia has vanished, again. She shudders as she remembers that night in the nursery. Has her past finally caught up with her? And is she already too late to save her precious daughter?

The Nursery is a captivating and shocking tale which kept me on my toes and doing my own detective work to try and figure out what would happen next. The book is about a single mother raising her daughter and becomes much, much more. Everything is not as it seems, and Sue Watson was able to pull the wool over this readers eyes.
Emily and her fifteen-year-old daughter, Sophia are living a normal life - if normal is keeping a low profile and hoping that no one finds out where you live. Emily is working in a perfume store and Sophia is attending school. One evening Emily notices someone across the street staring right at their home. This causes her alarm but not as much alarm as when someone enters house in the early hours and leave a note and "gift" behind. Naturally Emily is alarmed and is hypervigilant but doesn't want the police involved.
Making matters even more tense at home, Sophia has been talking to someone online who has been telling her not to trust her mother and other things about her mother's life. Tension mounts as Sophia cannot be found one day, and Sophia once home, seems to change overnight from happy to angry.
This book was full of twists, turns and revelations. Whew! Just when I thought I had things figured out, Watson threw in another twist. I had a hard time putting this page turner down. Just when I thought Watson was done shocking me, she managed another mind-blowing reveal at the end. Nicely played.
Gripping, shocking and full of twists!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Nursery is another unputdownable psychological thriller by Sue Watson. I know each creation from this author is guaranteed to have relatable characters, a compelling plot and twists upon twists that are both unexpected and mind blowing. This thriller in no exception. Emily is a character you will root for, but also question and doubt at times throughout this tumultuous journey. Her daughter Sofia will pull at your heart one minute and have you shaking your head at her in disbelief the next minute. The plot is layered and perfectly paced as the past comes back with a vengeance and loyalty is tested. I enjoyed every intense moment while reading one shocking twist after another. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves an unpredictable story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The nursery is about Emily and her daughter Sofia who lead a normal life. But suddenly Emily feels like someone is watching her house and her fear intensifies when someone breaks into their house and leaves a note. Emily would do anything to keep Sofia safe, but now she’s afraid her past will come back to haunt her.
This was a typical thriller where you knew something bad would happen, but not exactly what. The reader gets glimpses of Emily’s past and realize something happened 10 years ago. It doesn’t take long before we learn some things; Emily had to escape from her home because her husband wanted to destroy their family.
I mostly liked the thriller, but was somewhat annoyed by: ‘if I only knew what would happen next’ after a chapter where Emily thinks that things might get better. I didn’t warm to her motherly concern either. I got that she was paranoid and afraid of anyone taking her daughter away from her, but when she talks about Sofia’s friend and how she tried to convince her that her friend wasn’t right for her, I felt irritated. I also didn’t like the part where her best friend lived with them. Emily just seemed too docile, and I wish she just would have said what she thought.
The suspense wasn’t there all the time either. I would have loved if we had two POVS, that would have made the story more interesting.
The last chapters were interesting, but I didn’t quite buy it. It was too elaborate and I couldn’t see it happening in real life. The last twist was good though, but there was simply to many secrets and different motives.
Overall I would give this novel an average rating. It didn’t stand out and I was not overly impressed, but it was entertaining enough so not a waste of time.
THE NURSERY is a mystery thriller by USA Today bestselling author Sue Watson. This is my review of The Nursery.
Emily had just left her job as a nurse to care for her daughter, Sophia, and start a new life to avoid her ex-husband, Chris, from finding them. They had just escaped a dangerous situation and Emily was afraid about being found.
They were both fortunate to rent a flat from an older couple (the woods) who took them in as family and gave Emily a part-time job in their perfume shop, while Sophia was at nursery school.
Then Emily senses someone is watching them at their flat…and then in their flat. There was a break-in and a crescent-shaped plastic piece and a strange note was left at the scene.
Sophia, a teenager now, once a star student, is getting into trouble at school and she’s started asking questions about when she was a baby, but Emily can’t tell her what really happened the night she went missing. Nobody would understand why Emily did what she did, and if anyone ever found out, she could lose her daughter forever.
Then Emily catches Sofia messaging a stranger online, and reads the last message received.
“Your mother isn’t who you think she is.”
Then Emily returns home days later, to find Sophia missing! Has her past finally caught up with her?
This was a well-written novel filled with drama, full of twists and turns to totally grip the reader.
Many thanks to the author, Bookouture and NetGalley for my digital copy.
Sue Watson's brand-new book The Nursery is an engrossing read. From the first few pages this electrifying thriller grips you. The story is filled with atmospheric scenes and unbalanced characters. Sue Watson keeps you guessing as you try to figure out the plot.

The Nursery by Sue Watson is available on October 20th. (5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)
Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture, for sharing this riveting novel with me. Your kindness is appreciated!
Then: Morning light shines into the nursery, casting shadows across the pale pink walls and wooden cot in the middle of the room. She opens the door hoping to hear the soft coo of her daughter Sofia stretching herself awake. But the room is silent. The cot is empty. Her little girl has vanished....
Now: Twelve years have passed, but Emily will never forget the night her life changed forever and she's happy to have her daughter back beside her. A teenager now, Sofia, who was once a star student, is getting in trouble at school and she's started asking questions about when she was a baby, but Emily can't tell her what really happened the night she went missing. Nobody would understand why Emily did what she did that night, and if anyone ever found out, she could lose her daughter forever.
This is a gripping, page turning, twisted read. The characters are well developed and not who you think they are. The pace is fast as we follow the relationship between mother and daughter. Emily keeps mentioning her past and a secret she hides. We are slowly drip fed the relevant information and events. The tension builds with each turn of the page. I did feel some parts dragged out too long, so I took off half a star. Otherwise, this is a fantastic read.
I would like to thank #Netgalley #Bookouture and the author #SueWatson for my ARC of #TheNursery in exchange for an honest review.
An exciting, dark, mysterious and enthralling psychological family drama……my advice would be to trust no one in this book…..best of all it kept my on my toes and ‘wondering’ right up until the last chapter This story deals with….noooo not going to say as it will ruin part of the story but will say it deals with emotive topics ( and deals with them very well ) and has some big characters, some I liked….some I didn’t trust but I never really knew who was a goody or baddy until the end…and even then you might be conflicted 😎 I absolutely loved the quirkiness of one of the characters having a perfume shop and Emily ( main character ) working there meant we got a small insight into this world Sue Watson writes amazingly different books, dealing with unique topics and ideas and stories but reassuringly always good cakes or mouth watering food appear somewhere in the story A really great psychological read that will have you thinking about it long after you have finished reading it
I love Sue Watson's books so was thrilled to get an ARC of this one! Firstly, the cover and title made me so excited! But I was reading it at the start thinking, "have I opened the wrong book on my kindle? Where's the nursery? I got to halfway before it's been mentioned!" So I think they didn't really match the actual book too well. Once I ignored that, it was a really enjoyable read! I liked the characters on the whole, I loved the references to the protagonist's past to keep the suspense going, and this made me race through the pages to find out her secrets (and about the nursery!) I loved the ending! Sue Watson has a fantastic skill of throwing her readers off the scent and completely blindsiding them!
I'm a big fan of Sue Watson but this was not my favorite of hers. I had a hard time getting into it so it took me a while to read. It was still pretty good.
Emily and her daughter Sofia are living a quiet life after fleeing an abuser years ago. They were taken in by church people and Emily was given a job and a nice little place to rent. They're happy.
But Emily senses that something isn't right. She feels like she's being watched and one night, someone broke into the flat and left an ominous note behind.
What's going on?! Did her ex finally find her? Will they be able to continue their simple life?
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review!
Emily and her teenage daughter Sofia live a quiet and normal life, but Emily feels like someone is watching them. The fear intensifies when someone breaks into their home and leaves a note.
This is such a gripping page turner with lots of twists to keep you on your toes. The suspense builds as you know something bad is about to happen but not exactly what.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
Another great read by Sue Watson, this author never lets me down.
Emily, a single mum, lives with her teenage daughter Sophia. Sophia is spending a lot of time on the internet (as all teenagers do) and Emily is curious but also quite frightful as to who Sophia is communicating with. They have left there old life behind and that is where Emily wants it to stay, in the past. She takes matters into her own hands and feels a lot better, she feels she has the situation in hand. Then Emily sees more messages from this person and she is beginning to feel very uncomfortable. Things are about to get ugly.
Realistic characters and a fast paced story which will keep you turning the pages quickly, just how I like my books to be.
I have enjoyed all of Sue Watson's books and even though I found some of this a little predictable, I still very much enjoyed it. If you have not read any of her books, I do not think that you will be disappointed if you give them a try. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book, all opinions expressed are my own.
Emily is happily living a quiet ,content life with her teenage daughter Sophia. But when someone starts leaving cryptic messages on the net telling Sophia not to trust her mom will all the secrets that Emily tried to protect her daughter from blow up her almost perfect life?
The Nursery by Sue Watson is a domestic psychological thriller .She has written another well written plot with some unexpected twists and turns and an ending that I wasn’t expecting made it a highly entertaining read .
I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.
Emily a single mum lives happy with her teenage daughter Sophia. When Sophia starts to become secretive and moody, Emily worries that something sinister is going on. This is beginning of her life being turned upside down and her worst fears are about to come true. I enjoy this book although I could see quite early on some of the twist and turns in the story. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my e- copy in exchange for an honest review.
Emily has been raising her daughter Sofia alone for years and two were doing just fine. However, as the start book begins, readers learn that something happened to little Sofia when she was just three years old. In fact, Emily has a secret.
As the bulk of the story takes place 12 years later, with Sofia now 15 years old, everything starts to fall apart. Not only is the past pushing its way into the present, Emily and Sofia’s relationship begins to crumble. Also, there is a break in at their home. With a note left after the break in, Emily‘s past and her secret are soon to be revealed.
The Nursery starts off with a bang and stays tense throughout. There is always the question as to whom can be trusted in this book, especially when Emily tries to keep things on an even keel with Sofia despite the way things are changing. Then there is another character that enters the scene and we can begin to see why and how things are going to come to a head.
While Emily struggles to unravel who it might be that is trying to reveal her secret, Sofia begins to engage in risky behavior. This plays into the many twists and turns that this story takes on. This book brings new meaning to intense domestic thrillers. Going into the story, we know things are not right in Emily’s small family. As things fall apart I was fully drawn in as I kept wondering how things could possibly come together again. Sue Watson has written another winner as I dare any reader to put this book down after starting it.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
This book had to be the biggest cat fish ever . Let me premise my review by saying I adore Sue Watson and I'm so incredibly sorry for whats to follow .
Spoiler : The cover is a lie, where the hell was the nursery ?
This book had superbly positive reviews, and I read with such enthusiasm that something- Anything would happen at any moment now and Id be so glad to have read the book . But sadly. It didn't draw me in . In fact its incredibly slow and I had to double check I was in fact reading the right book . .
This book had all the edge of your seat feels. Since we open the book figuring out Emily has done something very very wrong ... and you spend the rest of the book wondering exactly what it is she actually did. . The entirety of the book is spent going over the ways Emily "over protects " her daughter Sophia .. however . Being a mom. Most of it seemed like common sense, stranger danger lessons . . Anyway, Emily will stop at nothing to protect said daughter, except when a handsome, rich man comes around . Then shes goo, she tells him all her secrets ... only to change her mind constantly and after the tell all she regrets it and wonders if hes actually trustworthy.
None of the characters are likable . Emily is confusing . Sophia is a brat . Nancy is toxic . I CANT PRONOUNCE 'CERYS' ...
I feel like the best part of the story was probably a twist at the end I read about . However, I came to a rolling stop at about 80% and decided I couldn't continue . It was to late for me, Save yourself.
Thank you @netgalley , @bookouture and @suewatsonbooks 😭 for the chance to read this book . I do truly appreciate it.
'The Nursery' is a psychological thriller that keeps you guessing right until the very end. Every page seems to give vital clues, yet each clue only serves to further mask the truth.
Emily runs away with her daughter to put her past behind; hoping to erase the past and naively simply start again. But 12 years on, it's clear that she hasn't really escaped, 'The past can't be erased, because it lives inside you, and however hard you try, you will never escape.' And this time, it seems like it's not only Emily who's the target but also her daughter, Sophia, 'Your mother isn't who you think she is.' As you read the book, you learn to trust no one.
Sue Watson does a great job of creating suspense from the very beginning; using a prologue to immediately create a sense of intrigue. The pace throughout the book keeps you wondering what will come next and there are certainly enough twists to keep you guessing, while also remaining believable.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I really wanted to love this book. I saw there were a lot of good reviews, so I had high hopes. However, I was let down. The book was very drawn out, and it took forever to get to the plot of the book. At the end of a lot of the chapters, the author tries hard to build suspense by making Emily say things like “if only I knew what was going to happen next.” About halfway through the book, it got better. There was one great big twist and I thought wow! But then the author kept going, and there was another twist, a pretty good one. I thought that would be the end of the book. NOPE! The author kept going and threw in more. That’s when it got to be too much. The book was somewhat enjoyable, but not worthy of 5 stars.
Dark and mysterious, tense and suspenseful, excited and enthralling and that’s how I’d sum up my first experience of a psychological thriller by Sue Watson. The premise is clever, with a twist here and there and an ending that’s smart and unexpected. Twelve years ago a little girl vanished from her cot. Today, Emily will always remember that night and is now living with her daughter Sofia. But Sofia is rebelling and interested in social media. When Sofia gets a disturbing message from a stranger online, Emily freaks. The past is about to enter the present and the shocking truth will be revealed. I’ve been vague as to not give anything away, there’ll be no spoilers here. Sue has created an engaging, satisfying read that will keep you up at night. The pace for the first half builds as we are left guessing as to what will happen, then smack bang the tension is there and the twists begin right up until the climatic finale. I thoroughly enjoyed my journey with this thriller and am eager to read more. I will be picking up more books from this wonderful author.
Oh wow what can I say? This amazing, versatile, absolutely brilliant author has done it again. Another fast paced, spine tingling, twist packed absolute stunner of a read. Don't. miss this one whatever you do.
Any book by Sue Watson is going to be a good time, but THE NURSERY exceeded my expectations!
Twelve years ago, there was an empty crib in a silent nursery. Emily is determined to keep her teenage daughter Sofia safe. But Sofia is getting into trouble and keeping secrets, communicating with strangers on social media, and worst of all, asking questions about the night she went missing. Emily isn't prepared to answer those questions, and when Sofia's secrecy becomes too much for her to bear, she goes through her phone and is shocked to see the last message her daughter received: 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒔𝒏'𝒕 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒔𝒉𝒆 𝒊𝒔. When Sofia goes missing again, Emily is forced to confront her own past and the terrible events of that night so many years ago.
This was action packed, and the pace was relentless! The reader was drawn right in to these deeply flawed characters and to the tough choices a mother must sometimes make. Highly recommended for any thriller fan. Thank you you to the publisher and NetGalley for my early read. THE NURSERY publishes October 20, 2022.
I literally just finished this moments ago and wanted to write down my thoughts immediately while I catch my breath.
I went into this one blind for the simple fact that if Sue Watson comes out with a book, I know it doesn’t matter what the book is about because she is an author that I automatically clear my schedule for when it comes to page turner thrillers. 😬
I’m not even a parent but I had major anxiety reading this because it’s literally a parents worst nightmare. So, I can’t even imagine the feelings an actual parent will feel when they read this.
I can’t go into my thoughts in great detail because I don’t want to give away spoilers but all I will say is that I hope you’re strapped in because y’all aren’t prepared for the TWISTS that’s about to smack you in the face. Oh and just about the time your face stops stinging from the first twist slap, you’re gonna be twist slapped again in the face and again. 👋😳👋😳
Let’s just say that your face is going to be bright red after you finish this one from all the twists that’s going to smack ya. 😮💨🤣🤯
The final twist had me staring into the abyss saying “WAIT, WHAT. OH MY GOD. WHHHAAAT”! 🤯🤯🤯
I literally could not put this down..not even to eat, barely breathed. I know I loved this author but once again she has out done herself. Exceeded expectations that I thought of this book and how much I would enjoy it. Must must must put this on your to read list!!! Like now, right now..this second..trust me you will not for one second be disappointed. More a lot more than 5 stars!!!!!
Thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for an early release of this book.
Ugh. This book has all positive reviews. And I just did not like it. I didn't feel like it pulled me in and I just kept waiting for it to happen. About halfway through I double checked the title because I wasn't sure I was reading the correct book. I was waiting for a part about a baby or something. The title did not seem to fit.
Anyway, we start by finding out that Emily has done something bad. But we don't know exactly what it is. Fast forward and she is raising her daughter alone and is pretty secretive about her life. It is played off as if her ex-husband could be coming to get her. She sees people outside, someone breaks in, etc. She will do anything to protect her daughter. Unless it involves a cute guy she is attracted to. She will be leary of him one second and then giving him all of her information the next. Halfway through the book is when we find out the true storyline. That still doesn't have too much to do with a nursery.
None of the characters are likeable. Sofia is bratty. Emily is confusing. Nancy is awful. Cerys is nuts. One second everyone thinks a plastic cow is silly, the next it's a sign they are about to be murdered. This might just be a pet peeve of mine, but I also hate when chapters end with something foreboding. "But things were about to take a sinister turn." Next chapter.
I just didn't find the characters or relationships compelling. I guess the ending was a twist, but it was too late for me by then.
Possible spoiler: The cover doesn't even make sense. No one was tucked in!
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
HOLY FLUFFER CANOODLES! As always, Watson is a pure magician at her craft of writing real intense, real mind-twisting thrillers & this is by far my favourite! She always knows how to take a seemingly common plot and the spins her best surprising work with it to cause chills & thrills galore! How she comes up with all these wicked and fascinating twists are incredible and I'm in awe. This book is no exception & will happily keep you on the edge of your bed and fill a craving you didn't know you had after reading this. She makes it all work seamlessly as she writes the plot and sets you on an adventure of pure suspense; gasps, eye popping moments & all! This one absolutely blew me away like a fall leaf in the cool wind. I was so entrapped in the story I didn't see the ending coming not once, but twice! A never-ending continuous ride of secrets and revelations that will leave your heart thumping like a drum!
Mყ 𝐒ყɴ𝐨ρѕιѕ: Emily and Sophia escaped twelve years ago to a little village with the help of some amazing elder people in the community and finally are in a good place. But with Sophia being fifteen, she's acting out more than usual & a change her behaviour and attitude are worrisome for Emily. As Sophia befriends someone who tells her that Emily is lying to her, Emily is terrified what happened that night all those years ago has finally caught up with her. The past and present will soon collide.

This is the fourth book I have read by this author. I have previously read 'First Date', 'The New Wife' and 'The Forever Home' which I highly recommend.
I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'Perfect for fans of Gone Girl, The Wife Between Us and The Woman in the Window.' I am a huge fan of 'Gone Girl' and 'The Wife Between Us' so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of Sue and if this is half as good as 'First Date' or 'The Forever Home' it is sure to be a page turning read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue and 38 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is set in Sidmouth, Devon, England 🏴 , UK 🇬🇧. I always seem to get on with books that are set in the UK better as I am from Wales and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book. I have in fact visited and been on holidays to England several times including in Devon so hopefully it will make it easier to picture the settings.
This book is written in first person perspective and the main protagonist is Emily. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them.
OMG!!! SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!!! WHAT HAVE I JUST READ!?!?!? Sue Watson you are an absolute writing legend!!!
This book is fantastically written with vivid descriptions that absolutely grip the readers attention and puts them right in the middle of it all making your heart pound and you constantly second guessing.
Another huge success by Sue!!! This book has got to be the most heart racing books I've read in a long time, if not ever!!! It had me hook, line and sinker from the first page and I could not put it down!!! Every time I said one more chapter it ended on a cliffhanger and I just had to know what was going on!!! If you are going to read this then clear your day because it is truly unputdownable. I started this yesterday afternoon and finished it at approx 2am, read it in one sitting and although I'm knackered today it was 1000000% worth it!!! I loved that you got to meet so many different characters and that there was such a a mix of personalities and so many suspects!!! It keeps you constantly guessing who did what!! It really does make you think how life can change so quickly and different decisions can change a life. It also makes you think how looks can be deceiving. It is filled with friendship, romance, lies, family, love, secrets, twists, turns and everything you could want from a psychological thriller along with some MASSIVE BOMBSHELLS which will leave you absolutely shocked!!! I for one was NOT expecting that at all!!! The fact that there wasn't just one bombshell that shocked me, towards the end it was like a war one of them and I was absolutely blown away. My jaw literally hit the floor!!! I don't think I have ever been as gobsmacked as I have after reading this absolutely gripping page turner! This book is rammed with suspense and tension and will keep you biting your nails, on the edge of your seat with your heart pounding while your flipping the pages because you just cant stop. Sue when are you getting this made into a movie so I can be the first in line for it!!!
As previously mentioned there is such a large mix of characters which makes it a realistic read. All the characters were strong and realistic as well as hiding their own secrets. I really liked Emily from the start and my heart completely went out to her. It can't be easy raising a teenager but it goes from bad to worse as you fly through the pages. I also really liked Sofia although sometimes her attitude annoyed me. Nancy really annoyed me as I thought she was most definitely taking the mick out of Emily's good nature. I absolutely adored Mr Woods who was such a sweet father figure to Emily and was constantly looking out for her. I won't go into any more information about any of these characters or other ones as I really don't want to give anything away to future readers.
Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read the prologue and first two chapters of Sue's 'The Sister-In-Law'. I haven't read this yet but after reading these chapters I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy!!
If you read one book on your life, make sure it is this!!!! I would love to see this turned into a movie and Sue I really hope you are working on your next psychological thriller at this moment because this book will go far!!! A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS on what promises to be a MASSIVE success!!!
Overall an absolutely heart racing, nail biting, unputdownable psychological thriller with a bomb shell you will not see coming!!!
Genres covered in this novel include Thriller, Mystery, Suspense, Psychological Thriller, Noir Fiction, Psychological Fiction, Crime Fiction and Domestic Fiction amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of 'Gone Girl', 'The Wife Between Us', 'The Woman in the Window' and anyone who loves a book filled with suspense and surprises!!
359 pages.
This book is just £1.99 to purchase on kindle and £8.99 in paperback via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!
Rated 5/5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.
Feel free to add me on Goodreads or follow me on my website or Facebook for more reviews
Ahhh wow! I could not put this psychological/domestic thriller down. A totally original plot for me. I became emotionally invested and the story was so twisty and shocking until the very last page. 4.5 stars rounded up.
Emily is going through the usual struggles of a teen girl's mum - her daughter, Sophia, is starting to do less well at school, she's using the internet secretly and shying away from a usually trusting, close relationship to her mum. But as Sophia closes off more and more, Emily pays close attention as she fears that her past secrets are coming back to haunt her. What lengths will Emily go to to protect her daughter from her past? What dangers are ahead for the small family unit?
There were so many things I loved about this book. The mother-daughter relationship was sweet AF, the teen battles were so accurate and portrayed so well. It made me feel a bit nostalgic for my teen years and fear at how stupidly teens can behave. Then the jaw dropping twists just kept coming and coming, and it worked so well.
Definitely recommend this one to all psychological and domestic thriller lovers!

I am so glad I didn't reread the cover or blurb before diving into this book, it doesn't match up for me.
I am excited to be taking part in the #BooksOnTour #BlogTour for Sue Watson's tense domestic thriller THE NURSERY.
I'm a huge fan of Sue Watson and always eagerly await her next exciting thriller. She loves to write in a character that really gets under my skin though no one really stood out this time. Of course the teenager was a tad bratty (but then, aren't they all at that age? lol) but aside from that, no one really got under my skin as in some of her previous thrillers. I have to say the title, cover and premise intrigued me as I love missing/stolen children tropes so I was excited at the prospect of beginning this one. But...as I started it and got further in, I'm wondering am I reading the right book? I double check...yep, Sue Watson - check. The Nursery - check. So, where's the nursery? Where's the missing baby? The story the premise told seemed to be completely different. The only thing bearing any resemblance were the names. Ok, so what's going on here?
Emily and her teenage daughter Sofia live a quiet life in the small Devon town of Sidmouth. A place to which Emily fled some twelve years ago to escape a past, a husband and a secret she did not want coming out. They found refuge in the church on a rainy night where the vicar and his wife took them in. They introduced Emily to Mr and Mrs Woods who then took them in and gave them a place to rent for as long as they needed and Emily a job in their perfume shop. Twelve years later, Mrs Woods has passed on leaving her husband the fatherly task of caring for Emily and the now grown Sofia as if they were his own kin. Life is good now.
But beneath the surface something is bubbling. Emily senses that she is being watched and is shocked to discover empty strawberry milk cartons and chocolate wrappers in her yard. Then one night someone breaks into their flat, taking nothing but leaving an ominous note and a cryptic clue behind. Emily is frantic. Had the person from whom she fled caught up with her? Are she and Sofia in danger?
Things take an ominous turn when Emily discovers that her daughter has been messaging with a stranger online...and even more frightening is the message she catches a glimpse of before Sofia tucks her phone away from her mother's prying eyes:
"Your mother is a liar. She isn't who you think she is."
Who is doing this to her? Her ex? An online stalker? Or someone with more sinister intentions? And then Sofia disappears and Emily knows the secrets of the past will soon collide with the present.
So...that's all good and typically tense and interesting but where is the nursery in all that? As it is something of a key feature, I thought the nursery might be a prominent aspect but it doesn't appear till well over halfway through the book! And as it is a key factor, I felt it should have featured a little more in the story throughout...particularly the prologue, maybe? I understand the prologue as it was, but given that the nursery was an important part of the story, I feel that it should have featured there instead making the rest of the story a little more mysterious because the prologue as it was was more obvious to the story from the start. I also think maybe cryptic flashbacks of some kind throughout featuring the nursery would have added to the tension and the mystery too.
I honestly had a hard time getting into this book as it was something of a slow build that left me somewhat mystified as to where this nursery was. However, when it does make its appearance it is with such a bang it only reiterated my belief that it should have been given more prominence throughout. It is important, yes, and it is key to the story which is why I feel its presence should have been peppered throughout via cryptic flashbacks or nuances. Something to give readers a sense of its importance from the beginning while still keeping its true value a secret.
I am a big fan of Sue Watson's but this wasn't my favourite of hers. Parts of it dragged and while the story did pick up and became more interesting I feel it was a little too late. But what was delicious was the final twist at the end. I had already guessed it but it was still a delicious twist that left a far better taste. The other reveals, as they came, were also nice touches and I felt brought the story together more. There was only one aspect I felt didn't fit with Emily's private revelation about the mobile - the first cryptic clue left for her. How was it even possible?
And the premise? The depiction of one thing that is really another and in the end doesn't make any sense. No one was tucked in...why allude to that if it didn't happen?
THE NURSERY is certainly not what I expected and though I did end up enjoying it, it took a while to get there. It ended up a good read but it could have been a spectacular read! It was certainly a different avenue I'd not expected from one of my favourite authors and while not my favourite, I still enjoyed the ride...even if I was puzzled for most of it.
None of the characters are entirely likeable which probably didn't help. Emily is a mass of contradictions. Sofia is bratty. Nancy is a selfish cow. Oliver is too smooth. Cerys is psychotic. Only Mr Woods is likeable but who is he really? One thing is for certain...trust no one! I certainly didn't.
Best part about the book is that ending. WOW! Twisted. Delicious. Thank you Sue Watson.
"Be careful what you wish for".
I would like to thank #SueWatson, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheNursery in exchange for an honest review.
There are so many twists and O-m-g moments in this book! It really grabbed my attention. Especially that very last twist…whaaaaat! Wasn’t expecting that near the end! Great book!
* The cover and title I would think might have been better off with a different choice. The cover and title really doesn’t make any sense until the last 10% of the book just about.
ARC received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion.
I wasn't hooked immediately which is odd because Watson is darn good writer. It actually took me a little while to get into this story.
You have an adopted child and social media shoves its way into your relationship with her and twists it and knots it. It's a story filled with drama and emotion. It also has some unexpected twists. A pretty good domestic thriller!
