Her Cursed Protectors #2

The Cries of Monsters

Rate this book
All monsters must belong to a house. Good thing I don’t play by the rules.

The monsters won’t break me. I’m going to find my sister, and if participating in the Week of Orash is my best chance of finding her, I’ll fight. I’ll face off against the newbloods and let the alphas from the monster houses think they can have me.

But I don’t belong to anyone. Not even the four terrifying monsters who hold me captive—Kade the wolf shifter, Asher the demon, Darian the siren, and Locke the vampire. Or at least, that’s what I used to think. Now I’m not so sure. Somehow these four males are melting through my defenses, and I'm starting to realize that I need them as much as they need me.

As the secrets of the Katakin continue to unravel, I find myself wondering who the true monsters are. Nightmarish creatures named the ‘outliers’ wreak havoc on the city, and enemies walk the cobbled streets, like whispers in the darkness. My sister isn't the only one who needs saving, and I’ll have to decide if I’m willing to embrace the power inside myself, or if I let the monsters burn.

This is the second book in the Her Cursed Protectors series, and a fun reverse harem fantasy novel for audiences aged 18 years and older. **Language warning **Multiple POV

Choosing sides

A good book that came alive for me in the second half. The first half was a bit slow-paced for me, it seemed to be more of the same testing with not many results, to begin with.

Raine is still with her monsters/protectors but she has not learned what the other newbloods have about the upcoming festivities. In fact, she has not even changed yet but has exhibited some unusual abilities. However, can she survive a tournament on her training and skills alone against newly turned monsters with every physical advantage over her? How far will her protectors go to dave her?

The second half of the book was such a page-turner I did not want to put it down. Still more questions than answers but I am looking forward to the next book.

got a little bored

Meh. I got a little bored towards the end. I don’t think I’m going to book 3. Nothing wrong with this book, it’s just not keeping engaged enough. Demons, shifters, vamps, fae, rh, changing POVs.

Feels like this book was broken up into smaller books for sales. Story is okay but just seems weird. Also weird how she trust the guys enough to sleep with them but not to tell them.about her sister.

I ended up skipping through quite a bit. The setup is there, but the plotline moves extremely slow. Why would she ever want to go back to the human realm... I don't get it. Why can't she just be honest with her guys about her sister. Again, I don't get it.

☾⋆⁺₊🎧✩°。 0:32 ──♡───── 3:47 ☾⋆⁺₊🎧✩°。

🎶 I walked out, I said, "I'm setting you free. But the monsters turned out to be just trees 🎶

It’s the Week of Orash, and Raine (h) has to essentially fight to survive so no one can find out that she’s human with the help of her monsters: Kade, Asher, Locke, and Darian (H). They will try to keep her secret as long as possible so no harm comes to her.

─── ・ 。゚☆: THOUGHTS*.☽ .*:☆゚. ───

I think she's Fae. There is no way around it. There's this big mystery about what she is and why she's not turning into a monster, and it's because she's not one of them or she's not from that realm. Prince Azaren has just been introduced, and she seems to have this instant bond with him, not in a romantic sense, but a feeling that he's not dangerous. She feels at ease with him and knows she had to let him go from Warwick's underground building, where he was trapped. Ultimately, they end up going to the Fae realm because they have to return the prints. They think they could find a cure with all the new information they've discovered about Warrick, Locke's father, who created the outliers. They think they can find a solution to get rid of him and discover what was inside the books that the Prince was so desperate to find.

[Locke]

“If I truly threw everything I had at you, you’d be so broken you’d wish for death. If it weren’t for Darian and me, you’d be dead in that water. You should be grateful I’m giving you a night off.”

In this book Locke is testing Raine’s limits at every point and it’s because he doesn’t know what she is yet but he feels like her turning into a monster is the only way that he would be able to protect her. Now they can’t keep her hidden because it’s the Week of Orash, and she hast to be in front of everyone, pretending to be a shifter and fight and defend herself without turning into a human or spilling blood because then everyone’s gonna know and she will be the main target. He is the main one that is forcing her into these trials and challenging her so that she could step out of her comfort enough to where she feels triggered, and her monster comes out so he’s majorly distancing himself, and shutting out the possibility of being with her. while he still feels the need to protect her and he can’t physically hurt her or else he dies too he wants her, but he doesn’t want to put her in a vulnerable position with his father and he’s just terrified of getting close to her. well he sees his brother closer to her. He wants that too but he doesn’t feel ready yet. Don’t get me wrong. He does end up initiating contact with her because he gets jealous because she was at a party without them and he was like if you have needs will get them with me or my brother no one else. and that he still protecting her at every point he just avoiding it. Locke is a grump who cares.

[Kade]

“I’m not letting you out of my sight, Mahare. What makes you think I’d let you go to the fae realm alone?” he growled softly.

He was the first one to let her in truly and wanted to be with her without making her feel like the enemy. His wolf didn’t allow him to push her away. He just wanted to get closer to her. The main issue is that his wolf sometimes wants to take charge, and he doesn’t want to claim her yet with a bite, so the others have to step in so he doesn’t push too far however Kate is the main one who always concerned about her in a possessive way because it’s in his nature as a shifter he has this need for her not only because of the bond but because his wolf is obsessed with her, and so is he so sometimes he can’t control it. He has to go somewhere on business. He make sure to leave someone else with her so she won’t be alone. It’s not only because he dies if she’s injured, but it’s because he genuinely doesn’t want her to get hurt.

[Darian]

“We won’t let anything bad happen. You have my word,” Darian added, and I’d never seen his expression so sincere before. It almost had me believing him.

He proposes she let Asher and him in because Kade was not her only ally. He saw that she was favoring Kade or getting closer to him because he was the main one who didn’t shut her out or treat her like an outsider, so he realized that his best shot was making her feel like she was one of them. From this moment on, he wants her around. He protects her. He ensures she’s OK if Locke attempts to test her during the trials, and he will always pick her. Darian didn’t want Kayde to be the only one getting attention from Raine, so he invited her to his couch, which worked perfectly at the end of the day. Kade misses Raine‘s present, so he invites himself into their bed, and that’s how the relationship and the romance develop between them. Well, they are possessive over her. They aren’t possessive of each other if that makes sense; they don’t mind sharing if it’s within the group.

[Asher]

“You deserve better, Ash,” I said, then I slid my arm behind his neck and pressed my lips against his.

“Knew you liked me, Sharachi. There’s no denyin’ it now.”

Asher is trying his best honestly. He is the flirty character with a darker past. He lets her in, and with Darian, they work really well together during intimate scenes. His main issue is that he doesn’t like touching Raine or his monster parts, whether they are horns or tails. He just doesn’t like the fact that he gets reminded of the past whenever she touches those areas of him, and she respects that, so he also notices that, and that gets him to soften up torture because she doesn’t feel disgusted by him; instead, she is enraged by the fact that others treat him like an outsider because of something that his mother did. He has this flirty attitude, and while he says he will be with other women, he just can’t get to it when it’s time. He has his needs, but he only wants them met with Raine. He also doesn’t want her to go to another house. He wants her to stay with him even if it’s not possible, she will not be going anywhere out of his sight because he cares about her not just because of the bond but because he’s genuinely interested in her.

─── ・ 。゚☆: OVERALL *.☽ .*:☆゚. ───

The series is honestly keeping me hooked. The books are short and sweet, like I can’t be mad about a series that is plot-driven, has some romance, and has great writing I love reverse harems and this is one of the first paranormal romantic where I am genuinely not losing interest from beginning to end despite the elements that are being inserted, and the new questions that I have in each book she hasn’t found her sister, which is the main plot of the story but I’m sure it’s going to be resolved in the next book, and I hope it’s not rushed because we’ve been waiting for this moment like the entire series has been leading up to this, but I’m genuinely excited about what’s to come. That being said, it’s not four or five stars because they’re great reads, and I’m enjoying them, but I’m not going to sit here and say that they’re the best books I’ve read in my life; however, they are memorable.

I'm pretty sure Mia Hartson uses magic.

On the surface, there aren't a whole lot of new ideas in the Her Cursed Protectors series...there's something like a selection, a human who doesn't follow the rules, a curse, some monsters, and a ton of betrayal. However, there is something so fresh about these books, about the way that Hartson tells her story... I'm telling you, it's magic.

When I picked up the first book, The Blood of Monsters, I wasn't expecting to tear through it in one setting, but I did. The characters are interesting, the world is very well built, and the plot was engaging....yes there are some tropes present, but again, the whole thing feels new and exciting. I couldn't wait to finish that book, and I couldn't wait for this one. Now, I'm eagerly waiting for the third installment.

I did struggle a little with Raine's development. It's annoying to see her still keeping secrets and I suspect at some point the lack of communication is going to cause problems. However, these books are set over the course of a couple weeks (despite it feeling longer), so the reluctance is more understandable, even if it's no less frustrating.

Some warnings...this is a reverse harem and there are some explicit spicy scenes. It also ends on a cliffhanger, much like the first one, and you can't read it as a standalone. If you don't mind those things, then you should read this book immediately.

Pretty good

While I am enjoying the plot, I'm not really a fan of Raine right now. Honestly, she seems rather stupid. Why wouldn't she ask the guys about her sister? I'm not really understanding why it's a secret. Her sister got taken. She wants to find her. It's been10 years! It's not really a big deal to ask for help finding her. Any way you look at it, they aren't going back to the human world. So, Raine trying to interrogate that one monster seemed pointless. Then, her going to Warrick's lab secretly? That was just plain stupid! What did she think would happen if she was caught? Did she think she'd beat a powerful vampire? Probably not. So she just came off as stupid to me.

Again, I like the plot and want to see what happens. But Raine is lacking in the smarts department. She may be able to fight, but her physical training definitely didn't improve her mental capacity....

SPOILER-FREE

I wasn't expecting much from a bargain book I stumbled across on Kindle, but holy moly, I blew through this book faster than any other this year. After slogging through the latest Crescent City book by SJM, this was exactly what I needed to pull me out of my slump.

This is one of those 'why choose?' stories and actually the first I think I've read, and I wasn't sure I would like it but I was mistaken! The bond has a time to develop between the FMC and each of the guys/monsters, and I enjoy that each guy is different and actually have some depth to them and their stories.

The FMC is strong, a bit badass and even though she is human in a world of monsters, she actually jumps in to save one of the guys at high risk to herself which I loved that the author included. It created a balance so that she isn't always the one needing to be saved by knights in shining armour, and the guys' masculinity wasn't threatened by her coming to help them which was nice.

Her determination to stay true to herself whilst trying to find and save her older sister, and not just automatically give in to the guys and the monster world she is now living in, was admirable and she has a definite protective vibe about her and she definitely doesn't take any crap from anyone.

The romance does have a teeny bit of insta-lust/insta-love about it BUT this is actually due to the story line (I won't spoil the details) and so in my mind is acceptable and doesn't have the same effect that this tope usually does. I actually hate this trope usually but in this case I enjoy it, and it doesn't go from 0-100 like you may think, it does start out and then steadily grow throughout the book as they all get to know each other more and as the plot thickens, so don't let this deter you.

I also really liked the setting of the book, it's like Moana meets the mountain from the ACOTAR series, with the island and mountain joining together followed by the monster city. It isn't over-described at all, allowing for the relationships and plots to be the stars of the show which is good, especially with the book not being a huge one.

Book 2 has been just as great as book 1!

This book was a little bit slower than the first one. In the first book, the plot really pulled me in and I wanted to keep reading. In this book, the plot is still good but it just seemed a little slow.

I love when books are also funny. The banter between the guys, Raine accidentally doing awkward things and her messing with the guys is amazing.

I also like that throughout the books so far, the guys tell Raine things about their lives. But they're not instantly telling her everything to know (I hate when characters in stories do that). They still have some barriers but they're opening up to her slowly and letting her in.

I like how Raine brings such a positive impact to the group. She's helping each guy with their own issues (even if they didn't realize it at first). I appreciate that it's not an insta-love situation with the guys. Although, on the other side I felt like the spice happened with the majority of the guys too fast. I expected her to do some stuff with them but for things to go further in the next two books while their feelings all developed more. For example, I expected scenes more like what happened with Locke when he led Raine out from the ballroom to happen. The spicy scenes were really good though!

I figured Warrick was up to something but I wasn't expecting him to be behind the outliers and for the fae to not actually be attacking them!

Every ten years, 12 women from her island are sacrificed to the monsters of Katakin. This time Raine was chosen, suffered the initial trials of the newbloods, and is held captive by four monsters whose lives are strangely tied to her own. Now she's preparing for the week of Orash, where she'll fight the other newbloods, trying to gain the favor of the alphas and be chosen for one of the big houses. Still determined make her one of their kind and accept the bond between them, the four monsters (Locke the vampire, Asher the demon, Darian the siren, and Kade the wolf shifter) continue to test her. The dangers increase as enemies of her protectors question her status and increasing attacks by menacing rogue monsters called Outliers continue to threaten the city.

As I read more of this world, the more I love it. This book continues the world building, but it has a lot more action, introduces more characters through the parties and competition, and tells more of her monster's background. Raine is determined to still think of them as monsters, but inside she's torn as she realizes how much she needs each of them. And the cliffhanger at the end only left me anxious for the next book!

*4,5 star review

"The Cries of Monsters" is the second book in the "Her Cursed Protectors" series and picks up right after the ending of book one. I love how this author uses a lot of different tropes, and intertwines them into an original monster RH series. I'm fascinated with all the different monsters that are being introduced in this second book, and how they all form connections with one another. I especially enjoyed the second half of this book, because it's absolutely packed with action.

This second book answers some of the lingering questions, but there is still a lot I desperately want (need!) to know about Raine, her sister, the connection with her men, ... I love the suspense and the development of this story. The only thing that bugs me a little, is the lack of communication between these characters. I understand it's part of their personalities and their past, but I would like to scream at all of them that they should just work together! But that doesn't change the fact that this is a great series with an interesting storyline, lots of questions and great action scenes. I also like the snippets of humor involved; they always make me chuckle...

3.5⭐️ rounded up. We get to know Raine and the guys more in this book. Part of the book is each of the guys trying to get her to change into a monster before the trials start because if she bleeds, everyone will know she’s human and will try to kill her. Locke for sure takes the longest to come around and does everything he can to push her away. Asher, Kade and Dorian are all a lot easier going about things with her. They’re intense for sure but not as hostile. Locke’s father also plays more of a role as we find out that he is behind the outliers who he is creating to make an army. We find this out when Raine goes snooping and frees a fae prince who snuck into Katakin to retrieve some books. The book ends with Raine and the guys saving the prince and taking him to faerie where he says he could help break the curse on Raine that has forced her soul to bond to the guys. For sure Kade and maybe Asher don’t want to separate. Dorian either really but Locke seems too concerned for her safety to consider his emotional wants.

The characters had good chemistry, the pace of the book was good and I liked that we saw more of Lyr. Onto book 3

I didn’t expect much from this series when I started the first book. But I actually am enjoying it a lot.

It’s not perfect, and if it had a good editor it could be something great, I think. And it has a few moments where I roll my eyes at the heroine or at some dialogue. But it has a really strong spine and characters.

I really like the characters. It takes a while to get to know them, but once you do they becomes really endearing. And it’s fun and heartwarming to see them all start to bond and have each other’s backs.

I also didn’t expect a subplot to develop into a really interesting main plot. And I actually want to know what happens next.

So I will be on the lookout for the next two books in the series.

This took me happily by surprise. If you’re in the mood for quick read that’s a paranormal romance with a fantasy subplot/plot with some reverse harem thrown in, definitely recommend it. Is it perfect? No. And know it going in. But it’s a fun read, and these characters really grow on you.

A great second book to the series!! I really enjoyed how the story continued to play out and how the bond continues to bring Raine and the 4 monsters together. I was really hoping Raine would just change already because it was causing me sooooo much stress, LOL, but she is still human!!

My prediction is that she is turning into some kind of fae because she keeps being able to summon magic! I am also really curious to find out what has happened to her sister so I am hoping that we will find that out soon! Again, this book only covered a couple days but I felt like there was a good amount of content to it that it didn't feel weird.

Overall, it was a great read and I immediately went right into book 3 because I NEED to know what happens!!!

So happy with how this book continued the story from the first one in the series... this starts exactly where the first book ends and jumps right into it.

We get to learn more about each of the alphas and Raine throughout their own and others POVs. I'm glad this book was steamier than the last - still pretty slow burn, but the spice is there and 100% worth it.

I cannot put into words how excited (and mad) I was to find out I was right about the outliers. Along with that revelations there were several other twists and turns that made it just unpredictable enough to keep me on my toes. Especially with that cliffhanger.

2.5 🌶️

Wow the second book in this series did not disappoint. I love that we got to learn more about the characters backstories, particularly the men who may have taken a bit of a back seat in the first book. The world building is fantastic and is done in a way that fosters the plot - making it more complex, without over convoluting the story. I also love the ending and can’t wait to see how it will expand the world/plot even further!

The cries of monsters

I would higly recommend this book and the others in the series. Where most paranormal characters are born or bitten these characters were cursed by the fae. Raine has some magic she never knew about and some how forged a bond with locke, kade, asher and dar. After finding a fae prince in trouble they help him escape back to his world.
I was laughing the whole time at the banter between them all and cried at a fight scene where one of the guys was on the brink of death. If you love the paranormal you NEED to read these books.

Wowza- Quickest way to make me Dnf a book? Shoehorn some mm in there 😂

The MM scene was brief&explained away
(by 1 side!) by ~magic~ but honestly IDEFC-

Give no warning for it&no amount of willpower can push me to carry on with this series now- no matter how invested I thought I was in it....

Smh. Negative 1.2 million stars out of 5😢

(To be fair- the pace, along with my growing disinterest&the mc being so disconnected from her own power contributed also.. but still surprise MM takes the cake)

Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️/5

I’m glad that I continued with this series as book 2 gave me some of what I felt was missing from book 1. The first third to half of the book was a little slow-paced with the storyline, but then I was completely sucked in. There was a better balance between plot and spice in this book, and there was some relationship development between our MCs, even though our FMC, Raine, is fighting against developing feelings. The action and twists kept me engaged, and the cliffhanger definitely makes you want to continue on to find out answers to lingering questions.

Cliffhanger … so onto next book

Enjoyed watching the FMC and her MMCs grow both in themselves and their relationships in this book. It’s also entertaining how more of the world is revealed through the events and action in the story. Do admit that some parts revealed in this book were not surprising, as hints of it had been given away earlier in this book and the previous one. That being said heading straight into the next book as incredibly curious as result of the cliffhanger ending. Thoroughly recommend reading.

Check CW and TW. Continuation of The Blood of Monsters. We get to revisit Raine and her protectors and things are getting adventurous. When some of them finally succumb to their attractions had me sweating by how hot it was. The twists and turns in this story will have you gripped. I cannot wait to see what happens next in book 3.

What a great read! Once I started books 2 , I was hooked! This is not a fluffy book! It has a good story line with twists and turns. I loved how Raine’s monsters are protective of her and the battles between the new bloods to attract attention from different houses. What I liked about this book is that it normalized monsters. Can I say…. I really hate Warrick!

Can’t wait to read book 3…..

The book was slow at the beginning so I stopped reading. It’s an easy read if you read the first one it’s pretty much the same. The second half was more interesting and finished it in an afternoon. Overall the book is ok but moving super slow as far as the plot goes it will likely be like 2/3 more books for it to be complete. I’m a little annoyed I didn’t look to see if the serious was complete. Wouldn’t have started it if I’d known.

Oh yes!

This wasn’t just full of steam…the descriptions of the trials to make Raine shift, the fights in the arena between the Newbloods, the lavish parties after the fights, the dance with the alphas trying to figure out what she is, trying to get her to commit to their house, Locke’s father (the piece of crap).
I can’t wait to see what transpires when our group lands in the Fae realm with an unconscious prince.

Good progression to the story! I love to see Raine get to know and get closer to the other monsters. The battles during the Week of Orash could have been a bit more exciting but the action surrounding the outliers and the intrigue surrounding the curse really keep you interested. She’s seriously not that smart at times…. She should of asked/told them about her sister. There where other times I wanted to smack her upside her head. But hey that last huge blunder made her discover a bunch of stuff. Can’t wait for the next book. And hopefully better choices!

OK, so I fell in love with the first book but I absolutely love how much character development happened in book 2. I am in love with every single guy and I cannot get enough of Raine. She’s like the perfect badass lady. After 33 years do you think it’s too late for me to change my name? Because I want to be her! I cannot wait to see what happens in book 3!

So yeah, there was a good amount of spice, I thought it was weird that up until this book, the author didn't skip any time, but in this one, she skipped ahead several times. And I'm not sure why. But overall, I still really like the story. I could do with more sex but the story is engaging enough <3
