Sarah Perrigo just wants to know what happened to her twin sister, Renee Alcott. The suspicious circumstances surrounding her suicide are only made more questionable when her husband, Michael, has her cremated before Sarah or her parents can pay their last respects. Sarah flies from her home state of California to Knoxville, Tennessee, to visit the old estate. After a few ghostly encounters, Sarah becomes obsessed with learning the truth about his family and what happened in Delany Falls.
I wanted to like this story. The author needs to hire a PROFESSIONAL EDITOR in the future. There were so many misspellings and grammatical errors, it was embarrassing to read. The tone of the book changes several times and is inconsistent. The story was a great idea but poorly executed. Please please please proof read in the future.
This is a 2.5 stars, because I had difficulties empathizing w the often overwrought MC. She has several TSTL moments, often associated with the very-mid romance angle(s). The supernatural elements were good but were often tentatively presented, when boldness was needed. Overall, I liked the dark milieu, so I bumped up the rating.
Loved the book. I was not expecting that ending. I was falling in love with the wrong people. This novel kept me on my toes thinking about who was behind the killings and why.
The story was amazing, but it only gets three stars because the writing, particularly the dialogue, reads like fan fiction. A solid editor could help with that if it wasn't intentional, but it wasn't so distracting that I didn't enjoy the story anyway. I would be willing to read more of this author's work, particularly if it was published after this with the possibility that her skills with dialogue have improved. Some of the lines are just too corny and juvenile.
As I said, the story itself was worth the time. It's well-plotted and some of the twists took me by surprise. Others had me scratching my head wondering if I read something wrong in an earlier chapter, but before I doubted myself enough to turn back the discrepancy explained itself. It was very cleverly done and completely believable in a first-person narrative. In that specific situation, I would easily have jumped to the same conclusion before eventually identifying why it didn't make sense.
This would have been a much better story if the main character had controlled her angst and anger. I am not sure what it is about authors in general that makes them want to beat the reader over the head to get a point across. The author wanted you to know what a wonderful sister she had and that others loved the sister, too. The main character sang her sister's praises on just about every over page. We got it, but you don't have to keep repeating it over and over.
If you disregard the typos and the misspelled words you would have a very good story. A good proofreader and editor could really tighten up this story and make it an excellent story. Out of 5 stars, I knocked off 1 star for spelling and wrong words, 1 star off for browbeating the reader and gave 3 stars for the story.
“If you don’t already have family trust issues, this will make you think twice before believing anything your loved ones tell you. Don’t think you have it figured out until … all the way through. This … has more twists and turns than you can expect.”
Yeah, that. Thanks to Kindle for making this book available & for an element of the spring challenge convincing me to read this. 😆
Correction: I guess this doesn’t count towards the “escapist” Kindle spring challenge that I thought it did. But it still counts as an overall book read, in Kindle and here on Goodreads. 😀
fantastic story from start to finish. couldn’t put it down
This book was amazing with all the different twists and turns. It kept you guessing right up to the end. Brilliantly written. Would highly recommend this book and will definitely be looking for the next one by this author.
Funerals, wills, new money, old money, spirits? Are they related or just to confuse? I don't think I would have liked meeting these people in real life, you might if Your into drama. Read to find out which you are!
I came across Marie Wilkens while looking for a good book to read, I've read three of her books so far and I will continue to read the haunting books as they are amazing so far. Thank you Marie for the haunting stories that keep me reading even when I'm tired.
It's been a while since I have read a book I had difficulty putting down. This book joins their ranks. I'll be looking for more books by Marie Wilkens. There are more twists and turns you could imagine. Keeps you guessing until the very end.
It was just another version of the same story. It had it's twists and turns but it was just fair. Sorry I wasn't blown away by the book but if you've read one haunted house book you've read them all.
Enjoyed. I found it a bit obvious, but it's still a nice read. I do read a lot! Sarah's anger all the time was a bit much. The only nice characters appear to be the child, and Sarah's mother
I just loved this book it was very hard to put down you just wanted to keep reading to see what was gonna happen around the next turn would highly recommend it
