The Kingdoms of Ruin #1

Regatele Ruinei Vol.1

Rate this book
Povestea unei razbunari disperate.

In Imperiul Lidian a inceput atunci o nemiloasa vanatoare.

- Ruthsicwordpress

I think it's the first manga I really like. I would have liked it even more if the format woudn't have been so small (it's pocket size), and if it was coloured, not black and white.

But the story was captivating, and I'm curious about the follow up.

For the english version there is a preview on Amazon, and for the romanian version on Libris.

4.5 rounded up to 5 stars.

The Kingdoms of Ruin volume 1 by yoruhashi is one interesting manga.
We have Adonis, raised by a witch. We find out that the world was created along with humans and witches to live in harmony and so on.

But of course, humans are humans, so they turned against the witches and now there's a war between them. At the beginning, after the introduction, the story is very impactful, because someone is killed, and for this someone else suffers.

Then we go a few years into the future to see a girl's persepctive and how she meets Adonis.
I was at some points, frustrated at others, and amazed by the overall story.

I recommend this series. :)

Content warnings: Gore, violence, public execution, internment camps, mass destruction

Witches and humans lived alongside each other until an industrial revolution ushered in an era of distrust, and the witch hunts begin. Adonis was only a boy when his mentor, Chloe, was publicly humiliated and executed. As a human who uses witch powers, he captured and hidden away for ten years. Until he wakes up as does a ferocious thirst for revenge.

This series is intense. It’s very grimdark and the precise art does not pull any punches. Some pages are just hard to look with the hyper violent content on them, but if that’s your thing, you’re in for some delights.

The set-up of a very capable anti-hero protagonist and the oppressive government he’s up against are evenly matched. This kingdom defeated the witches despite their magic somehow, and it’s internally consistent as far as the world-building goes. Plus, the magic system with Adonis using a pen to summon spells really works and renders beautifully from panel to panel.

I am definitely going to keep reading because I just have to know how these battles between magic and science play out and the twists that lay ahead.

I'll be honest, the ending annoyed me. A lot. I wanted to update how I feel about this. This is my *only* one star review... Ever. This book is unnecessarily violent, and the main character is a plug.

Yikes. This is brutal, and I'm not sure that the creator is giving enough thought to how and why. Adonis, our ostensible hero, has spent the past ten years reliving the horrific death of his surrogate mother, a witch named Chloe, during the Witch Wars, when the kingdom of Redia rounded up and killed all of the witches. Now he's ready to get revenge, but...can we really back a guy who just spent half the book rampaging through a town killing everyone, children included? Add in that there are huge amounts of women in "internment camps" (which they're periodically taken out of to be prostituted as a way of "paying their keep"), at least one of whom is a witch herself, and this has a veritable buffet of uncomfortable imagery.

I get it. Man's inhumanity to man is beyond the kind of awful words can express. I say this as the grandchild of people who lost their entire extended families in the concentration camps during World War Two. But I don't feel like this book is helping.

Review will be for the whole series, read at your own risk.

Read 2 volumes

Uh what? This manga is violent and brutal. I can see it’s setting up a story but it also feels rushed. And the ending?! What?? I thought she’d be a main character.

Edit 6/22/21: the speed of this manga is unreal. So much happens way too fast so it loses gravity on us. Also what’s up with people dying, reviving, and repeating?!

100 FREAKING STARS. THIS IS THE BEST MANGA I'VE EVER READ I REFUSE TO ACCEPT THAT IT ENDED LIKE THIS!

I think this got me out of a reading slump as well.

So the book is about how God created witches and humans to live in harmony but humans now want to kill witches because they don't need them (you fools). Anyway, this apprentice Adonis saw how his mentor died and now wants to get revenge. This is all I can say but READ. THIS. MASTERPIECE!

Well, this was very violent, lol. I do like the idea of humans hunting witches in a high tech society, though - it feels like the field is level between magic and tech.

This was my first manga read ever and I actually enjoyed it.

At first, it was a bit awkward to read backwards, especially starting from the right side of each page. But in the end I got used to it quickly.

The story about humans hunting witches, high technology and magic was interesting. I will continue the series and see how the story develops.

Warnings: graphic violence, body horror, sexual slavery and sexual assault, concentration camps, mass murder, queermisic trope, death of parent/guardian

3.5 stars

A witch-hunt plot in a science fiction setting makes this shonen series a bit different, though there are plenty of tropes in the story. Adonis, who was a young boy under the care of Chloe (who happens to be the most powerful witch in the world), is deeply traumatized when she is executed brutally in front of him. She was one of the victims of Emperor Geothe's mission to rid the world of witches, who were a separate race that helped humankind since ancient times; with new technology, he feels the age of witch's superiority over humans is over and mankind needs to prove its dominance. 10 years later, a woman named Doraka frees Adonis from his imprisonment at the same internment camp where she is kept. Upon gaining his freedom, he immediately launches a massive attack on the city, causing mass destruction, until Doraka herself attempts to stop him.

Now, the anti-witch sentiment in the populace is pretty much what you expect in nearly every witch-themed novel; its only so unusual to see a crowd of people with smartphones recording the quite violent execution of a witch, who, BTW, was ready to stand down to protect her apprentice. You see like zero sympathy from all the people gathered there, so you kind of see where Adonis is coming from when he decides to destroy the empire that chose to enthusiastically eradicate an entire race of people. He reasons that even though some of the people are different a decade later, they have all benefited from the carnage and so there are no innocents. At first, I was confused as to why Doraka herself would have any reason to save the city while walking into the blast zone, since the empire had imprisoned her too. It makes sense in a way, but I will wait until volume 2 to see how reasonable it is.

The world-building of the book, to be frank, is quite lacking. The only thing we know is that there is the empire, and there were witches killed, and some of them tried to escape to safer countries. If there are other countries that could provide refuge, how did the empire even get to claim that witches were eradicated. Also, like, in a decade, no witch tried for vengeance? It is specifically mentioned that the anti-magic device used against Chloe was gathering dust in a secure facility somewhere. Another thing that I felt this book did not do well was the way the violence was depicted - with most of it against women, and quite gratuitous in nature (even for a shonen manga), it feels like it is trying to go with 'what would be most upsettting'. Chloe's death is depicted not once but twice; the women in the internment camps being used for prostitution is depicted in a cruel manner. There's also the prison warden being queer-coded - which falls in the regular trope of queer-coding a villain character for kicks.

Finally, the artwork - it is pretty good: the character design, and the clothing design, as well as the storyboard have good choices. The fight scenes are also well done - Adonis' magic is also depicted in an awe-inspiring way, which makes the sheer magnitude of the forces of magic and science against each other feel more impactful.

⭐ Rating:5/5 || Recenzia pe Secretele Simonei

📚 Am citit de curând Regatele Ruinei Vol.1 by Yoruhashi.

Fazit
Ein brutaler Reihenauftakt.

Fairly generic but entertaining enough. Has potential to become a good series down the line, and it’s grim tone is a welcome one.

Brutal, bloody, and dynamically illustrated, this one is a thrill-ride from start to finish, even if it makes for a somewhat directionless setup: While the reader knows that the main character is out for revenge, characters that one would expect to be main cast members keep dying so consistently that any plot threads they might have started tend to die with them.

Granted, this is one of the things that makes the book such an engaging read. The other is the spectacular art, which features more than a few panels that are worth stopping to stare at for their composition alone, and I'm continuing the series for those reasons.

However, by the end of this volume, the main protagonist is just an Angry Murder Boy with no emotion other than vengeful, which is not a very appealing trait for the character that's supposed to carry the series. To be fair, he does have legit reasons to be an Angry Murder Boy, but here's hoping we'll see some stronger development in the next volume.
