This book was written after and based on the 1973 animated film of the same name. The screenplay for the film was written by Peter Tchernia together with Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo.
After yet another Roman legion is beaten senseless by the village of indomitable Gauls, the centurion decides that the Gauls must be gods and 'it's a fat lot of use fighting gods'.
He sends a message to Julius Ceasar in rome, and Ceasar decides to issue the Gauls with a challenge.
Using the story of the twelve tasks of Hercules as a reference point, but choosing new tasks because the Herculean labour were a bit outdated, Ceasar sets twelve new tasks for the Gauls.
If they complete all twelve tasks Ceasar will concede the village of Gauls are gods and concede defeat and lay down his arms but if the Gauls should fail they will become Ceasar's slaves.
The Gauls will never turn down a challenge and Vitalstatistix chooses his best two warriors, of course, to do the tasks: Asterix and Obelix.
The diminutive Roman Cauis Tiddius is chosen as an adjudicator to guide the Gauls and see that they complete the challenge
The tasks are quite novel ones and include beating the German marshall arts champion, Cylindric, crossing a lake through an island filled with beautiful sirens, surviving the hypnotic gaze of Iris the Egyptian and finishing the meal by Mannekenpix, the Belgian.
The two heroes complete them all needless to say throwing everyone into confusion in the process.
Just how it's done is full of vivid colour and fun.
A bit more surrealistic than some of the Asterix comics, this one plays on the whole idea of our heroes knowing they are in a strip comic where 'anything goes'.
This is not perhaps the greatest Asterix classic, but worthwhile for diehard fans to complete their collection.

3/52 books read in 2019.

EN: This one falls into the category 'nostalgia'. I remember finding this copy on my parents attic while still in elementary school (you go there till the age of 12) & being immediately fascinated with the Asterix and Obelix stories. This time I still enjoyed it tremendously and I actually understood the references to the classics!

Actually I read the Indonesian edition at a bookstore. But I cannot find the edition in Goodreads, and don't know the book details (and too lazy to search the info in the internet) to add the edition in Goodreads.

I don't like the book of the film (is "graphic novelization of the movie" a correct term?) in general but 12 Tasks of Asterix is worse than average other books of the film, because the quality of screen captures are bad. And I have to endure for 50+ pages of it. I have read at the bookstore checking the story, and I could not care about the story.

The result: I cancelled my decision to buy this book.

¿Toda? ¡No!

Rating 3.5.

Not bad as novelizations go ... the animated feature on the other hand, was the best.
The only version I ever watched was the Italian dubbed, and somehow I'll stick with that one.

Lasciapassare A38 .......classic.

This is not entirely a comic. Rather more a illustrated book based on the scenario of the first animated film created by Studio Idefix. My fondness for these heroes and memories of my childhood when I watched this cartoon obviously affect my assessment. I just like Asterix and Obelix :)

Asterix Conquers Rome is an Asterix comic book written by Goscinny and illustrated by Uderzo. It was published in 1976.

This book isn’t in the official Asterix canon because it wasn’t original. In fact, it was based on the movie released that year titled ‘The Twelve Tasks of Asterix’. As such, it’s not really a necessary read even for fans, but I chose to finish it off as I truly adored the movie itself.

The film was the most unique and different entry in the Asterix movie series. While the story is still fantastic, the comic itself left a lot to be desired. Its main issue is that it just copies the same plot points and dialogue from the movie without adding anything new to it, which felt lazy and uninspired.

Another issue is that this is some kind of combination of a comic and a storybook as there are no bubbles to be found anywhere, but large swaths of text combined with large panels. Admittedly, those huge panels were gorgeous to behold and simply stunningly detailed throughout, but I wished to have seen the bubbles in them, though the writing of the narration and the dialogue was actually quite strong and sophisticated, which elevated this unfortunate stylistic choice undoubtedly.

Asterix Conquers Rome benefits from gorgeous large panels and some strong writing, but it was also a lazy rendition of a much better movie that ultimately felt uninspired.

7.5/10

Asterix's first original feature film (and third overall) was The Twelve Tasks of Asterix, translated into German as "Asterix conquers Rome". Once again, this is not a comic book per se, but a book with pictures, which were used as storyboards for the feature film. Nonetheless, it is quite funnily written, and does a pretty good job of not only telling a story, but also encouraging the reader to actually watch the movie. The story is about Caesar being told by a legionary that they think the Gauls of the Village are Gods and not normal people. The emperor, enraged, asks them to do 12 tasks to prove their divinity, like Heracles did back in the days. Asterix and Obelix are chosen to perform these tasks, with Gaius Pupus being the referee. The tasks range from running to javelin throwing, from martial arts to eating. Some are quite interesting, like defeating Roman bureaucracy...or guessing the correct softener... as I said, the book is funnily written. In the end they reach Rome and defeat all the tasks, proving to Caesar that they are not normal people...

Of course this story is non-canon and does not take place in the main Asterix timeline, but it is a funny "what-if" and a good book to one of the best Asterix films there is. I liked it! :)

One of those books based on a movie - The Twelve Tasks of Asterix, a 1976 Belgian/French animated feature film, apparently the third in the animated franchise, in this case. I am yet to watch any. The film was directed, produced and animated at Goscinny and Uderzo's own animation studio, Studios Idéfix. It was the first Asterix film (animated or live-action) to be based on an original screenplay rather than on material from any of the comic book stories. Caesar declares that the Gauls must undertake a challenge, inspired by the Twelve Labours of Hercules: the village's best warriors (Asterix and Obelix, obviously) shall perform a set of twelve new tasks, which only gods could carry out successfully.

This is the novelisation of the film with large pictures scattered throughout the text. Essentially, there's nothing here that's not in the film and at 56 pages, it rushes through the adventure. What worked well was the tongue-in-cheek narration that was more like a commentary of the events. It kept the story live and interesting.
The pictures looked to be redrawn from the film so fitted into the book well.
It would have been nice to have had a novella at least that expanded upon the film more and the text did rely on the pictures to set each scene.

--->Children's Book Fashioned with no Phylactere<---

I hate reading prose -that's why I'm Strictly Sequential- so putting all the movie adaptations as children's books really annoys me!

And you get so little art!!

Why was Tiddius using a pencil and paper instead of the usual chisel and slab?

Why wasn't this nearly as good as I thought it would be??

I have a 1976 hardback edition from Dargaud. Here’s another book I have owned for over four decades which I have no recollection of properly reading from cover to cover. It’s a nicely meta narrative, well aware it’s the book of the film of the cartoon series, nicely done, chucklesome but entirely forgettable. The illustrations seem to be produced by the animation studio but aren’t taken from the film as far as I can tell. It’s an okay read, but not one I’d return to.

Wypada to jednak całkiem zabawnie.

Not a comic book and many of my favorite parts of the movie are missing. The best little jokes were completely omitted. Like Iris's eyes blinking and Asterix bringing flowers and mushrooms to Merino. Sadly lacking as a story book. I wish they would make an actual comic with all the things that happen in the movie.

This episode of Astérix is not the typical comic book, it's a text based adaption of a film. To prove that the Gauls in the little village are gods, Astérix and Obélix must complete twelve tasks set by Caesar. It was pretty funny, but the format meant that there are fewer visual gags.

The relatively wordy format of this book is very different from the other Asterix stories. It just doesn't work. It's the book of a film based on the Asterix stories; it would have been better as a comic book first and foremost, I think.
