When Jennifer receives a message from Scott Dwyer after twenty years without contact, her first reaction is one of excitement. Scott was her first love, and now that she’s in her forties and in the middle of a divorce, nostalgia for her youth gets the better of her.
Scott invites Jennifer to his house in Redford, the very same town she grew up in. It’s a place she’s made great effort to put behind her, for not all her childhood memories are sunny. When she accepts Scott’s invite and returns to her old hometown, she struggles with mixed feelings, especially when she learns of the death of Steven Winters, one of her and Scott’s childhood friends.
Scott invites three other people from their past to honor Steven’s memory—Corey, Traci, and Mark. But the group is more than old friends. They share a dark secret that has troubled them for decades. Now it’s time to face their traumatic pasts. Together, they must unravel the mystery of what happened that night in the patch of forest behind Scott’s house, a place once known as Suicide Woods.

Oh wow, look at that creepy cover. Isn't it amazing? 😍
Well, let me tell you that the cover is the best part of this entire book. 😒
The basic gist is that five friends that are now in their forties, all unhappy with their lives, decide to reunite when one of their friends from childhood dies. They had all gone their separate ways after a tragedy befell them in the woods on Halloween night in 1995.
Now they are all back together to rehash what happened all those years ago.
Oh my goodness was this terrible. I'll admit that my curiosity was piqued in the beginning and I read the first 75 or so pages at breakneck speed until we actually got to the woods and what should have been the spooky part. This was way too cheesy to be considered scary. This book read more like a young adult horror novel. Even the sections when they're actual adults still read young. Probably because these adults are all acting like horny teenagers. Are you seriously going to tell me that these people all get together after years apart and the death of a friend and all they want to do is bang one another? Please just make it stop. 🤦♀️🛑
Then we find out what is actually happening in the woods and it made my head want to explode. Not in the "I was so shocked my mind was blown!" kind of way. Oh no, this was more like my head seriously wants to explode after ingesting so much lunacy. I honestly wish I could be transported back in time to the good ole days when I never read this book. One last thing, I am not a religious person but if you are of the Christian faith you will most certainly find this offensive. 1 star!
Thank you to NetGalley and Cemetery Dance Publications for my complimentary copy.
It meets The Ritual. I loved the first 70% or so of this book. Loved it. We're talking five stars, the scariest-book-I've-read-in-a-long-time sort of love. And then the ending happened. I'm beginning to think that I just expect too much of horror novel endings because this always happens. One minute I'm chugging along, completely into whatever I'm reading, and then the next thing I know Fonzie's on some water skis and jumping over a shark. (Does this reference date me? Well it shouldn't because I wasn't even born when that episode first aired, so there.) And then there was the very, very end, like the last couple of pages, that made me jump up and yell “$%#& this book!” as I finished it. I can't give any specifics without majorly spoiling things, but let's just say that this book … changes its direction a couple of times, and they were rather disappointing changes as far as I'm concerned.
But, anyway, why don't we pretend that the last 30% of this book never happened because it was AMAZING up until then. As I've already mentioned, this book is very much a combination of It (a group of childhood friends reunite as adults to relive a supernaturally-fueled, decades-old trauma) and The Ritual (scary things happen while in the woods, along with other stuff that I can't mention because it'd be a spoiler and also because it's part of the ending that we're pretending didn't happen). The entire novel - even the bits that I didn't enjoy as much - was atmospheric and wonderfully scary and suspenseful. The flashbacks to Halloween 1995 were particularly frightening, so much that my greyhound chuffing loudly in her sleep at 2 a.m. (while I was up far too late reading this book) about made me jump out of my skin. And, having been a high schooler at the same time as the main characters, I appreciated the nostalgia factor. I basically couldn't stop turning the pages and managed to finish the entire novel in under twenty-four hours.
Oh, and did anyone else picture Mark as a Bam Margera look-alike? No? Just me? Okay then.
So, yeah. I can't quite bring myself to give this book five stars because of The Ending Which Shall Not Be Named, but it was still an immensely enjoyable read despite its flaws. 3.99 stars, rounded up.
Thanks to NetGalley and Cemetery Dance Publications for providing me with an advance copy of this book to review!
Scott invites his old love Jennifer back to Redford. He also invites the rest of the crew, Traci, Mark, and Corey. Back in 1995 bad, creepy things happened in Suicide Forest Halloween night. Scott talks them into going into the haunted woods again and laying the past to rest. Murder and mayhem abound. I loved this scary story and stayed up late into the night reading. Thanks NetGalley and Cemetery Dance Publications for this ARC that will be released October 7, 2023!
Siiiiigh so this kills me. Actually kills me. If you know me you know Kristopher Triana is my favorite author. And there’s nothing I hate more than giving a favorite author such a low rating. Anyways hear me out:
This is the story of a group of friends in their 40s that are reunited after learning a member of their friend group from when they were teens has passed. We begin learning that something sinister happened to them when they were younger that lead them to all go their separate ways and never speak of what happened again.
This book started off very slow. And I mean VERY SLOW. You are basically getting chapters and chapters of each character and what they’re doing with their lives and I just did not care about any of them. Once the book starts picking up and you start learning about what happened in their past I was more invested….. however, it was short lived. Once something interesting happened we then got a page about one of the characters and who they had a crush on and what they hated about themselves etc etc. These characters just sucked the life out of me lol. Also this is a general horror book and the type of horror really just was not my thing. Once again…this is my favorite author so this kills me lol. I think people will definitely enjoy this one if they’re looking for this type of horror but being someone who is used to his extreme horror it was sadly a miss for me.
Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Trigger warnings- suicide, body gore, abuse, self-harm.
This book was a winner from the beginning. The author, Kristopher Triana, slashes the reader with blood-chilling suspense that encompasses every page.
As teenagers, good friends Scott, Jennifer, Traci, Corey, Mark, and Steven enter the infamous Suicide Woods on Halloween night. Nothing was the same after that. They push aside the terrors of what happened that night and continue on with their lives, far away from home. When one of their friends winds up dead 25 years later, they all feel obligated to return to a haunted past to memorialize one of their best friends. But what’s forgotten comes to light as these old friends reconnect and wind up in the Suicide Woods once again.
There are a lot of similarities to The Blair Witch Project, but this book took it to another level. Brutal slayings, demons, ghosts, and human enemies all combine and pack a huge punch. So if the supernatural isn’t for you, skip this book. But if you like a little bit of the unknown mixed with the well known troubles of human relationships and psyche, then please give this a read.
This was a great 4 stars for me! Not the mind blowing, book hangover type of read, but a great slasher that’ll give you nightmares.
A great thank you goes out to Kristopher Triana, Cemetery Dance Publications, and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was definitely interesting. It took a turn that I didn’t expect, but it was a good read. It had a super spooky feel to it throughout the first 2/3 of the book that would make this a great read for Halloween season. The last 1/3 threw me off a little bit, but was still pretty intriguing. It did give off classic Halloween vibes, which I really enjoyed. I would say give this book a read if you’re looking for something spooky to scare you a little bit 😉
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me an advanced readers copy for my honest review.
Another brilliant read! I expected nothing less from him, of course. Ive read about 90% of the books he has written and have loved every one of them, some more than others. I got this particular copy from netgalley and jumped right into it. It has It vibes. I hate to say that but it really is hard to miss during the introductions. Nothing after that is similar to It though. This book didn't have me hooked thinking "oh my god I can't put this down" like some of his other books did. That is not to say that it is a badly written book or anything, only that it is different and not as brutal and not as much action as his previous works. I definitely recommend this one to people who are new to his books and want to ease into them with a less graphic tale.
3.5 stars This hooked me in from the beginning - I’m a sucker for a story about a group of friends having to come back together after years of being apart. I thought this was well paced for the most part and I was eager to keep turning the pages to find out what happened when they were teenagers and what was going to happen now they were back together as adults. Great suspense and atmosphere along with some creepy moments. The story did lose a bit of its spark towards the end as we find out where it’s going and although I’m a fan of that trope it did feel predictable after a certain point. I’d still recommend it for an enjoyable pageturner and it would be perfect for October since parts of the story take place on Halloween.
That Night in the Woods by Kristopher Triana is a story reminiscent of The Losers Club from IT, in that a group of five friends meet up after twenty years to celebrate and mourn the loss of one of the group, Steven. I’m afraid that’s where the comparison ends. This unfortunately wasn’t a book that worked for me. It was a real slog to get through it and I did think about DNF’ing it at several points. The story starts off extremely slow and the POV’s alternating without warning and did find myself getting frustrated.
That Night in the Woods follows Jennifer, Traci, Corey and Mark coming back to Redford after Scott gets back in touch with them to inform them of the passing of their friend Steven. Each friend seems to be at different stages of their lives – some are married, some divorced all still quite immature, but one thing that was blindingly obvious is that they’re all miserable. When they arrive at Scott’s (who still resides in Redford) the awkwardness is off the scale, and they all just seem to immediately fall back into their teenage selves.
This is one of the issues I had with the story – the falling back into past behaviours. Here they are all meeting up again after twenty years and they suddenly forget about jobs, families, responsibilities. I just found I had to suspend disbelief a little too much. Scott presents them with information relating to Steven’s death, mysterious journals, new details and then again with the acting like teenagers, despite hearing about the new details and Jennifer going through a recent divorce, falls into bed with Scott. I mean there’s no way in hell I’d sleep with an ex again, especially after twenty years, I just wasn’t buying it.
They revisit that night twenty years ago, that night in the woods, that night they vowed to never speak of again, and here they are speaking of it again. The story went back and forth and when I got to the scene of them in the woods, I was fully expecting to have the pants scared off me, but it just wasn’t what I had been expecting.
That Night in the Woods had so much potential, but I was just left feeling so deflated by the whole experience. I have the author’s other works on my TBR and will be reading them, but this just wasn’t for me. Again, this is a subjective view and may be different for everyone.
I think if you were to attempt to sum up this book in one word it would have to be: Intense. It felt like there was a twist at every turn and I found myself holding on to the edge of my seat to see what it would be.
This is one of those books that would be a fantastic movie. I could picture the scenes in my head as I read and found that terrifying so I can only imagine what it would be like in movie form.
I believe I would’ve rated this higher if the ending didn’t happen the way it did. I felt like it ruined the story for me as it felt predictable.
That Night In The Woods was a fast paced, tense and thrilling read and I’m excited to see what is next from this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and Cemetery Dance Publications for providing me with this ARC. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Need a Halloween read? Well look no further! Triana is known for his extreme horror but this isn’t that. This is a more traditional read with lots of character development and plenty of reasons to never revisit an old flame. Did I mention the Suicide Woods? The secret amongst this group of old friends? The scary things in the dark?
How about a divisive ending? I don’t know about y’all but when I hear that an ending to a book is divisive, it makes me want to read it more to see which side I’ll fall on. Well, readers, I happened to fall on the side of YES with this one. 😏 If you know me, you’ll know why. If you want to know what I’m talking about, go buy this book, read it and let’s have a chat.
Some may find this a bit of a slower pace than his other novels but lemme tell ya, the nostalgia is real and I love it when an author changes it up a bit. There was a lot I could relate to in this read… and thankfully a lot I couldn’t. 😂 Add this to your scary Halloween stack. Go.
That night in the woods has Stephen king vibes. Four friends Jennifer, Traci, Mark and Corey receive a message from their friend Scott who still lives in their hometown that one of their old friends - Stevens has died. Scott asks them to come back to hometown to honour dead friend's last wishes.
The friends are reunited and reminiscence over the old days. But there's something they can never get over with. The halloween night they spent in the suicide woods when they were young. 7 went in but only 6 came out that night but we're they unscathed? No. Everyone suffered a trauma , something they never shared with anyone, something they ain't proud to have done. They all are guilty of hiding a dirty secret & they all are afraid to face it. But everyone has to face their demons, right? What unfolds is bizzare, creepy and haunting tale of suicide woods.
This started off great. I was quite engaged in the story that I finished it by staying up till 5 AM but the ending made me go -" Nope, not for me". It wasn't bad but was just not that good like the rest of the book which has potential to keep you hooked.
The ending could have been cut short by about 50 pages coz as the twist was revealed I didn't see the point in killings to be described in elaborated grotesque ways. I thought once the secret unfold there might be only few pages left but boy, was I wrong? I just lost interest at that point but I had already was invested so much into the story that I decided to finish it then and there. The ending was totally disappointing. Overall a good read for thriller lovers.
Thank you Netgalley and cemetery dance publication for the ARC.
Twenty years ago seven teenagers went into suicide woods on Halloween, to party, camp out, and scare themselves a little. Only six of them made it out alive. They went their separate ways after that, never wanting to think about that night, trying to put it, and each other out of sight and out of mind.
Now all these years later, the messages come to each of them from the one person who stayed in town. Scott still lives in the house near suicide woods and he has bad news. Their childhood friend Steven has passed away and he wants them all to come back in honor of his memory. He claims this reunion was Steven's final wish and he has a message to share with them. Is he telling the truth or does he have nefarious reasons for wanting his former friends to return? He's certainly acting a bit strange.
There's an old saying that tells us you can't go home again. Maybe that should be changed to "Don't go back if you were lucky enough to survive the first time." As a fan of small-town horror, I loved the atmosphere and the characters, These are people I could have gone to school with. The friends, the lovers, the nerdy kid, it's like I knew them all. But then came the sudden fear of the unknown. The party went from innocent fun, to fight for survival. You wouldn't think you could get claustrophobia from reading about being outside in the forest but I did start to feel like those trees were closing in on me. I'm not going to tell you anything about what really happened that night in the woods but it has me staring suspiciously out my window on the lookout for more than just wildlife, and I won't be answering any calls or emails from long lost friends who want to reunite.
When Jennifer reconnects with her first love after twenty years, she reluctantly returns to her hometown, where dark secrets and a tragic death await. Old ghosts resurface as Jennifer and her friends confront their haunting past in Suicide Woods.
"That Night in the Woods" delivers nonstop thrills from beginning to end with relentless suspense and engaging set of characters. The connection to the characters is palpable, with my one standout being Corey, who steals my heart as an absolute personal favorite amongst the group. Each character is very distinguishable and adds depth to the story, drawing readers deeper into their harrowing journey.
The horror elements set in the woods are executed with precision, just as chilling atmosphere is maintained throughout the book, immersing you in a world where fear lurks behind every tree and shadow. The author's skill in creating an eerie ambiance is exceptional, to the point where you could actually hear the haunting notes of "Don't Fear the Reaper" playing as the perfect soundtrack to heighten the sense of dread.
Divided into parts and skillfully utilizing different tropes, the story keeps you captivated throughout. The writing itself is immersive, showcasing the author's talent for crafting evocative and memorable prose.
While the final stretch of the book may have lacked a bit of its initial punch and the plot's direction became somewhat predictable, it still doesn't diminish the overall enjoyment I had with it. It will make a perfectly spooky October/ Halloween read and it gets a very strong 4 from me, as I didn't love it quite as much as author's previous two books I read.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Jennifer receives a message from her first love Scott, who she hasn’t been in contact with in 20 years. In the middle of divorce, his message finds her with excitement and nostalgia. Scott invites her to his house, back in her hometown that she’s purposefully put behind her. She accepts his invitation and returns to her hometown with mixed feeling after hearing about the death of their old friend. Once she is there she soon finds out it is not just a reunion for the two of them, but a reunion of their old gang. With a dark secret they all share, they’re about to face the truth about what really happened that night in the woods, once known as Suicide Woods.
Spooky season is already among us! Bravo Kristopher Triana 👏🏽 Way to give me chills on a sunny day in July. That Night in the Woods makes you nostalgic to old Halloween, making you crave those chilly autumn nights, and doing things you’re not supposed to do in the spirit of “fun”. Overall, I enjoyed this book and it’s going to be a banger when it reaches the shelves. Even more so around Halloween. There was a change in direction I did not see coming but honestly… this is good. If you like getting scared and unexpected twists, I recommend this one right here. I will be getting myself a physical copy when it hits the shelves!
Happy Reading 📚
Thank you NetGalley, Cemetery Dance Publications, Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), and Members' Titles for the ARC, and giving me the chance to read and review it honestly.
This had roots in old school horror and kristopher shows hes not just a talented extreme horror author but can deliver the slow burn spooky just as well as the gory, taking well known tropes and giving them the *triana treatment* I enjoy small town horror (did you know?? ARE YOU NEW HERE?) and pair that with creepy woods and a friendship group? Ya girl is home ☺️ I enjoyed the characters and think they take center stage in this, for me the ending was slightly disappointing but I think this would make a fun read for October, a read that will make you nostalgic for those 80s halloween vibes!
Five high school friends get together for a reunion of sorts when a fellow classmate mysteriously dies. Returning to their hometown of Redford brings back many memories of the past but not all remembrances are good. The invitation to attend the memorial soon reveals a more sinister intent that surround a local forest known as Suicide Woods.
That Night In The Woods is a full length novel where the present and the past collide with horrific consequences. There’s something hauntingly intriguing about a group of old school friends entering untouched woods all the while experiencing supernatural horrors. Twisted branches and dying leaves create the ominous trails that lead the reader throughout this bewitching landscape of Suicide Woods.
Author Kristopher Triana has consistently immersed readers into his own style of story telling. Once invested, his descriptive brand has the same effect as a scary movie or a spooky ride. These exciting adrenaline rushes cause you to feel a little more alive.
That Night In The Woods has a true crime vibe seeping from its pages like a dark and distressing nonfiction story. The atmosphere established for this book makes for an ideal playground for bloodthirsty creatures, possessed voices and ritualistic ceremonies all lying dormant and waiting for you.
This novel is an example of pure concentrated evil. Morality, empathy, compassion and mercy are redeeming qualities that don’t exist here. It’s a lesson taught by Blue Oyster Cult: the inevitability of death and the foolishness of fearing it, exists within all of us.
“Then the door was open and the wind appeared. The candles blew and then disappeared. The curtains flew and then he appeared. Saying don’t be afraid.” - Blue Oyster Cult A five star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Horror Bookworm Recommendation.
Picture this: Halloween 1995, Don’t Fear the Reaper plays, Jack-o'-Lantern, Woods, High school friends, Journal, Basement,
The storyline follows the group of six 18yo friends looking for something to do on a spooky Halloween night in 1995, and OHHH the woods gave them a trick-or-treat taste of Halloween they are not expecting for! Two decades and a half have passed and they have met again. Would they relive their unforgetable thrilling childhood memories?
This book reminds me of IT sans the clown. Definitely a good book you can bond with during the spooky season to feel the vibe! I devoured this in less than 24 hours! There is a backstory going on from the start while introducing the characters so I just got completely reeled in maybe after 15% of the book. However, I don't like how there are still so much backstories inserted at the most thrilling parts that I somehow just found myself skipping some lines instead of continously pumping me up. There are chapters also filled with details that just seemed so mundane. I am kinda disappointed about the ending too that I raised by eyebrow so high! Also, Corey deserves better, don't you think? Easily my personal favorite among the group! A 3.5 stars for me!
Thank you to Kristopher Triana, Cemetery Dance Publications, and Netgalley for an Advance Review Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and Cemetery Dance Publications for providing me with my FIRST EVER ARC in exchange for an honest review! Not only was it five stars, but it’s Kristopher Triana, so I was super lucky with this book.
“That Night in the Woods” is so easy to get invested in. First of all, I love stories that surround “THAT night” or “THAT one time,” or “THAT incident.” Those unforgettable days where something dramatic happened, and there was no coming back from it. I know I had several of THOSE moments growing up, and now in early adulthood, I still do. It was easy to feel like you were right in the room with the high school friends turned middle aged adults. After Steven Winters unexpectedly passed away, the executor of his will, Scott, invites all the friends they used to hang out with back to their hometown to discuss Steven’s final wishes. But the visit is more than just a weekend retreat- slowly, more and more deadly secrets are revealed, and the group is forced to come to terms with what REALLY happened the night of Halloween 1995. The same night they thought it would be a good idea to go camping in the infamous “Suicide Woods.”
We get to know these characters on a deep level, which I will ALWAYS applaud. They all have their flaws, but most are likable. Jennifer is innocent enough and easy to relate to. Corey is gravely underestimated with a heart of gold. Traci and Mark are both a bit rough around the edges, but you can’t help but root for them and deep within, they carry great compassion and strength. I loved getting to hang out with all of them, and when the story was nearing its end, I wished I had gotten to do it for an even longer period of time.
I’ve seen some criticisms surrounding the ending. I don’t want to spoil this story (especially because I loved it so much,) to anyone, so I won’t be getting into too much detail. Nevertheless, the ending, and the cluster of emotions leading up to it, did make perfect sense to me. Sometimes, acceptance can take hold over one’s will to fight. That’s all I will speak on it for now, as you truly must experience it for yourself, but for me, it didn’t dull the book’s sparkle.
One of my favorite things about Kristopher Triana is how he can truly rip me out of my bedroom and make me feel like I’m in a totally different world. He’s definitely one of my go-to authors for reasons exactly like this one. He keeps the dialogue natural and interesting, and the atmosphere is vivid and inviting without being overly descriptive or redundant. Even when the unexpected twists do come- and boy do they- you can look back in the story and see where you might’ve missed some hints. He eloquently avoids plot holes and keeps a consistent storyline that still manages to surprise its readers.
I truly believe that this story will entice mystery fans, drama fans, and horror fans alike. With enough of each to satisfy even the pickiest of readers, Kristopher Triana has yet another winner on his hands, and I’m so happy I was given the opportunity to witness it early.
“That Night in the Woods” will be released into the world in October 2023. It’s definitely the perfect book to get you in the spooky spirit. Do yourselves a favor and keep an eye out for this one, which no horror enthusiast will want to miss!
As a fan of horror, gore and all things dark I absolutely enjoyed this book from beginning to end. The storyline was creepy, graphic and highly disturbing. I love the creepy woods setting and I though it's a something that's been used many times in both books and movies when done right it is guaranteed to blow your mind. This book did that just that. There was never a dull moment and the author managed to keep me invested, intrigued and captivated all throughout the book. There was just enough romance to balance the horror out without taking away from the plot and what was promised in the blurb. The characters were memorable and didn't get lost to the storyline. It was very easy to keep track and remember who was who and what their backstory was, something that isn't always easy with multiple POVs. Last but not least that plot twist really blew my mind I did not see it coming at all. I love when I cannot guess the outcome of a book and it leaves me with my mouth on the floor. Overall this book was a real page turner and I devoured it in one day. It will make for a fantastic halloween read when the spooky season comes around.
Thank you Netgally for providing me with the Advanced Readers Copy of this book.
That Night in the Woods is a standalone horror thriller by author, Kristopher Triana. My only other book by this author was Gone to See the Riverman which still stays in my brain as one of the most horrifying books I’ve ever read. I’m happy to report this one is not extreme horror, and more of an ‘old-school’ horror featuring an incredibly creepy and nightmare-inducing setting. More of a spooky than gory, this one will make you want to leave the lights on. The story follows a bunch of adults returning to their home town for one hell of a reunion. I enjoyed the multiple POV and split timeline. This one was a race-to-the-finish which I couldn’t put down. I read it in one sitting. The book is well-paced and sucks you in from the beginning. The wood scenes were heart-pounding and atmospheric and make you want to keep reading to find out just what happened that night in the woods. I’d highly recommend this fun-to-read horror novel. Thank you to Cemetery Dance Publications for a copy of the book to review.
**I was very excited to have been given the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review**
Listen, I like Kristopher Triana & his books. His concepts are unique, and he can hold his readers attention. My favorite book by him is Gone To See the River Man. The concept of that storyline was strange but unique. I do not want to compare that book with this one, but I will say that while I loved Gone to See the River Man, & I really liked That Night in the Woods. Triana is a superb author in his vivid grotesque descriptions. The way some of the demons and congregation members were described were just gross LOL in a good way though if that makes sense. LOL (Fellow horror readers will know what I mean). Another aspect of the story that I adored was the setting. This book takes places during Autumn in Connecticut, Halloween to be exact. So, you have those Autumnal vibes throughout the entire story. One of the scenes that I recall was reading that Steven was taking a walk near some bridge by a farmland that had a various number of swollen pumpkins. It was the perfect book for me to read in the month of October. It was just enough spook to leave my palette satisfied. I enjoyed the concept of friends going into some creepy dark woods on Halloween night!! Come on! That screams good times RIGHT?
Overall, this was a great and fun read. The story went somewhere I didn’t see it going. I do wish we would have read more on the demons though. Still, it was fun to read. Thank you to the publisher for giving me the opportunity to review this book.
This was the first book by this author that I’ve read. I’ve now added a few more books of his on my TBR since I really enjoyed this one.
Five middle-aged former friends meet back in their hometown for a reunion/memorial of sorts. They’ve all cut ties with each other after something horrific happened in the local woods when they were teens. What happened back then, and why are they together again now?
I thought the pacing in this book was great. The flashbacks to the teen years kept me reading page after page to find out what the heck happened. The woods scenes were really creepy. Very atmospheric. The characters were nicely fleshed out, and believable.
A huge thank you to the author and NetGalley for providing me an ARC. I give honest ratings and reviews regardless of how I got the book.
Not the book for me! I didn’t realize it was a horror book, so I felt I should give it higher ratings do to that. It mostly held my interest, but based on the genre, I guess it had to have this stupid ending. I wanted some kind of light, but there is none in this book. It was just depressing and evil. I felt like I wasted too much precious time. If you do like horror books, then this may be for you. If it had had some type of redemption, I probably would have rated it 4 stars.
3.75 I really enjoyed this book. I know Kristopher Triana is best known for extreme horror but with this novel he focused more on relationships and human conditions. There was still a fair share of blood and gore, but I really grew to care about some of the characters and cared about their fates. I can't wait to read more from this author.
This book has everything I love, which I don't want to say because I don't want to spoil anything. Kristopher Triana is easily becoming one of my favorite authors.
This book has a few familiar tropes like 'adults returning to face there childhood demons' like in IT by King and Black Mouth by Ronald Malfi, and another trope that I will not mention, as it is part of the twist that happens at about the 60-70% mark, and I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but it's something we have seen before but not in this combination.
It was extremely well written, with a great atmosphere and characters, and very enjoyable.
*Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.*
Man this book really had me vibing in the first half! The atmosphere was fantastic. The creep factor was cranked and I was really getting into the flow of things. I really enjoyed the tension building and the characterizations, I love a good “old friends come back together to deal with a haunted past” trope.
Unfortunately I found the last 40% or so the book did a pivot and I found it to be very predictable and I lost interest in the storyline. I was maybe just vibing too hard with the original premise that I didn’t want the story to twist. I found it to be enjoyable overall but I was really hoping for a supernatural woodsy horror vibe- it went a bit more thriller by the ending.
