It is the first and final duty of any warship to put herself between the innocent... and the enemy.
Henry Wong and Sylvia Todorovich have gathered the interstellar powers of the Ra Sector into a tentative alliance—an alliance that is tested by the return of the Sector’s former rulers: the Kenmiri Remnant.
The Sector’s only hope of withstanding a genocidal faction of the Kenmiri is the Twelfth Fleet of the United Planets Alliance. But when Wong’s scouting flotilla collides with the Kenmiri, he discovers they now have a weapon that could easily destroy Twelfth Fleet.
Wong and Todorovich are stranded on the wrong side of a world the Remnant have burned, and they only have one way to meet their allies before it’s too late.
If Henry Wong is to save his people and his allies, he must take his ship on a deadly run into the hostile star systems of the Kenmiri Remnant: the very species he doomed to a slow death.
Glynn Stewart is the author of over 60 books, including Starship’s Mage, a bestselling science fiction and fantasy series where faster-than-light travel is possible–but only because of magic.
Writing managed to liberate Glynn from a bleak future as an accountant. With his personality and hope for a high-tech future intact, he lives in Southern Ontario with his partner, their cats, and an unstoppable writing habit.
Glynn Stewart’s fifth tale of Henry Wong and Sylvia Todorovich, Commodore and Ambassador respectively, starts with the Remnant Faction (ebook from Faolan's Pen Publishing) of the insectoid Kenmiri. Most of the Kenmiri acccept that with their Queen’s deaths they are a dying species. Some want revenge, and Henry Wong’s ship has to stand by helplessly when they destroy an inhabited planet. Most of the tale is about his small fleet surviving a trek to meet up with a hastily assembled armada for a final battle. Glynn Stewart is one of the best military sf writer today, and this is a solid addition to his huge collection.
This whole book was one long build-up to a single battle that was … magnificent.
There were times I became impatient with Stewart’s obsession for counting ships, balancing ship sizes, and armaments. I imagine he has a tiny nebula of spaceship models in his writer room that he moves about as he writes the details. Yet, it’s that attention to detail that makes these books so great.
I’m not unhappy ... at all … with the way the book ended. Seeing Commodore Wong get what he deserved was exhilarating, exultant, and probably a few other ‘ex’ words.
Very pleased with the way the alliance is shaping up.
Some great battles in this book, lots of tech getting pushed forwards, and some really interesting contact with an important race that hasn't had much of a direct role in the previous books. Some important nuance and backstory added for that race that really helps to flesh out the events of past books.
Another solid book in the series, looking forward to the next one
Rarely do you come to a climax where you didn't say but why didn't they use.... Nice finish, somewhat predictable, but meets expectations of not a wasted read.
Will be interesting to see who the next villain capable of handling the newly incorporated tech
This book is a tense and high stakes race against time, technology, and revenge. Glynn also manages to make the universe feel big and active while simultaneously keeping the focus on the experiences of a single ship.
I was also excited to see O'Flannighan's cameo. I do love her. I hope to see her again. She deserves all the love.
So, I enjoyed the story, it followed most of the lines I expected, but the main fleet engagement just felt too fast. Normally not a huge deal, but the majority of the book was spent hyping us up for the battle and it felt like it was over in seconds. Kind of felt like a disservice, but the rest of the book was great
Easily the best book in the series yet. It really did have every required trope executed to perfection; from the unexpected super weapon, to the counter, and the last stand.
Great pacing and action that captures the “hurry up and wait” of all warfare, and the nail biting tension of the best laid plans, confronted with the enemy.
I enjoyed the book but it did seem like the odds were against the Peacekeepers. They overcame but at an extreme cost. This is a constant theme in this series. It does get a bit tiresome but the story is still full of good characters and fun interactions.
This is a great addition to the series. There's plenty of action throughout the book. What could be a long, drawn-out wait for action remains a tense thriller with great characters and a good set-up to continue the series.
Starts off looking for allies, but ....the Kenmiri Remnant derails that mission which turns into "lets warn everyone while running and hiding". Good action throughout and continued character development.
If you're a Glynn Stewart fan, you love the space combat, tech, and soldiers going above and beyond, serving with honor and integrity in the face of doubt, betrayal, and the occasional unexpected ally. This delivers.
This part of the series is a lot more space and technology than people, and in my opinion that makes it less compelling than most of the other books Glynn Stewart has written. So it’s good but not great.
This book was a good book in the series. The resolve of the main character to do the right thing is a the forefront of this book. Looking forward to reading more by this author.
An amazing adventure. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action. The mechanics of space warfare described so well you can see them. I look forward to more from this series.
I don't give 5 stars to anything but nebula/Hugo award winners. This windup of a very good space opera exploring the problems of winning a rebellion against an empire. But needing to win the peace too. Recommended series with no magic involved.
I really enjoyed this one. It pulled me in and kept me wanting more throughout the whole book. Now I really should go to sleep and not start the next book in the series, right?
An exciting read. Plenty of technical detail. Lots of diplomatic issues. Seems like the final book of the series, although the saga continues in a different vein.
Greatly enjoyed this book. May have accidentally given it a 1 star review as the kindle rating interface is very glitchy. Appologies if that was the case.
