Lao She (Chinese: 老舍; pinyin: Lǎo Shě; Wade–Giles: Lao She; February 3, 1899 – August 24, 1966) was the pen name of Shu Qingchun (simplified Chinese: 舒庆春; traditional Chinese: 舒慶春; pinyin: Shū Qìngchūn; Manchu surname: Sumuru), a noted Chinese novelist and dramatist. He was one of the most significant figures of 20th-century Chinese literature, and best known for his novel Rickshaw Boy and the play Teahouse (茶館). He was of Manchu ethnicity. His works are known especially for their vivid use of the Beijing dialect.

花了近2周时间读完这本关于北京小市民在日本占领期间的小说。老舍在这本书中花了大量笔墨来描述主要人物的心理活动。不同于安娜卡列宁娜，主人公的心理活动在小说中起到塑造人物性格的辅助作用。四世同堂中的主要故事情节需要靠主要人物的心理活动来推动，心理活动描写占据了小说情节的主干。从可读性来看，许多侦探小说的可读性要高于四世同堂。小说叙事结构上有老舍的特色，但并不十分讨巧读者。依靠大段的心理描写来推动情节的技巧有时无法刺激阅读兴趣。

书中对北平物和景的描述质朴而带有个人感情，读起来非常自然而淳朴。如果有机会阅读其他民国作者有关北平的小说可能对于这段历史的了解会更生动，可爱。

Zhenghongqi is one of the Eight Banners of the Qing Dynasty. It was built in 1601. Zhenghongqi is the Xiawuqi and the first of the Xiawuqi. As a fantasy/sf/detective reader, such classical is never in my toread list. Now this book is on top of my personal lifetime honor list. Great great honor to get addicted in. Feel a little miserable that few and few can understand, or even try to read, or even notice the book. Anyway, world is changing, better the country becomes, happier people feel, fewer this book would be remembered. At least, I read, I got, I am fully satisfied, that's enough.
This book is the best answer to reason of why Chinese culture continues since start, tortured, but not ended.

花了将近五个月听完了全集。不愧是老舍，塑造的人物都非常鲜明，紧跟情节起伏。瑞宣入狱时描述的情节令人毛骨悚然，李四爷给小崔收尸，天佑死的时候又都令人潸然泪下。战争的年代，没有一个人可以存在侥幸心理，瑞宣不做汉奸，也没有抛下全家逃出北平参加抗日的决心，选择进英国府得过且过，但父亲惨死，妞子饿死，瑞宣也在最后加入北平地下党的工作，积极抗日。老婆婆不赞成日本的军国侵略行动，但她本身作为日本人，日本战败后，她也必须承受敌国人民的怒火。没有人可以侥幸逃脱，但罪恶的不是人，是战争。

看第一部的时候还觉得笔调慢而闲散，相对沉闷，然而作品的力量也正是因为开初的积累而在后面得以层层勃发。战争前北平的美好，战争中人间的百态，战争结束时希望的燃起，一部作品浓缩了老舍先生对人性人心、对经年北平、对中华文明最深切的懂得。

抛开政治，我一直觉得建国前的左翼/救亡小说论成就不如建国后的革命小说，即使这部也是一样。论结构和情节，和《红岩》比被爆得一塌糊涂（《红岩》放今天仍是顶尖的类型小说），论人物塑造，也不过齐平《林海雪原》之属。赞誉性的评论文章也看过不少，却始终无法喜欢这部。
