Charles Edward Pickett came to California in 1843 and over forty years was in the midst of events which changed the West from wilderness to civilization. He was an eccentric writer, primarily of pamphlets and articles, an activity that gained him the title of Philosopher. The life and writings of Pickett were compiled by Lawrence Clark Powell, a well known writer and key member of the University of California, Los Angeles Library. He created a masterly piece of work in rescuing Pickett from obscurity, including much material from his extensive research in libraries across the country.
