After the Dark Comet seeded the Earth with trillions of tons of nanobots, it was destroyed in a collision with a Near Earth Asteroid. As the swarm of nanobots drifted down to the Earth’s surface, they acted on the last instructions from the cyber entity inside the comet before it was destroyed, and sought out sentient minds.
After infecting the DNA of their new hosts, the nanites waited for new instructions that never came. It didn’t take long for the impatient nanites to begin taking epigenetic programming instructions directly from the minds of their newly infected human hosts… and their hosts had uniquely imaginative minds.
A year has passed and humanity is still adjusting to billions of dead and billions more being genetically altered. The world is now populated with shifters of all kinds, including were-beasts of myths and legends, as well as magical folk, plus comic book superheroes and villains. Tens of thousands are still dying every day as mankind battles entrenched religious prejudices against what is perceived as demon spawn, and those whose bodies have been genetically altered through latent wishes and desires, giving many a feeling of evolutionary superiority.
Skye Bluestone has always wanted to be an elf wizard, and his nanite parasites have granted his wish, giving him abilities he only dreamed of having since childhood. But, to paraphrase the old saying, with great power and ability comes even greater responsibilities and obligations.
Skye and his sister's Epigenesis has turned them into wizards, and his best friend, Scott, into a Kodiak bear, while computer nerd Dustin Lim has become one of the rarest of the 'Changed', a Tattoo Mage who can grant others more magic through his tats. Another rare kind of 'Epigenetically Changed', scientific geniuses Gretchen and TeeKay have the ability to construct magical glass spheres and vials that produce holographic monsters or abilities anyone can use, even those without their own magic. The two use 'snark' as a 'passive-aggressive' defense against the bigotry and hate they've dealt with their entire lives because of their love for each other.
The six friends team up to protect each other against carnivorous apex predators, and religious zealots who see the changed as demon spawn, both sure 'they' are morally right to inflict their beliefs on others.
WARNING #1: In real life, people use language that may be offensive to some. This book's characters 'occasionally' use 'salty' language that may offend some readers. If you are offended by occasional cursing and swearing, you may want to pass this book by. WARNING #2: This book takes place in/around 2050 and mentions this 'fictional' world's early three decades of history that may 'trigger' some readers of a conservative political/religious nature. If you use words like 'liberal', 'woke', and 'antifa' as insults, you may want to skip this book.
“Epigenesis: Nanopocalypse 1” is an excellent science fantasy adventure. It’s a perfect escape: engaging characters, a fast-paced story, and creative world-building. The Dark Comet Flu rewrites genetics as alien nanites infect humans. People become changelings or completely turn into another species. They may be sentient or feral, and often have new talents.
Some develop the ability to heal themselves and others, which leads to intriguing social problems. Insurance companies want to cure cancer patients while pharmaceutical companies are predictably unhappy: cured people are not profit-making. A bigger problem involves the divisiveness of these changes. Mundanes, or pure humans, may feel superior and create laws to support this. Meanwhile, predatory changelings gather in dangerous groups to gain dominance.
Skye changes into a powerful mage and becomes the leader. Dustin is a talented tattoo magician who increases the power in others. Scott is a likeable, loyal bear changeling. These three are my favorite characters, though they’re all interesting. Well done! Special note: I LOVE the cover!
So, author has severe issues with religion, wealth, and all the usual talking points of CNN for the last decade; the good little sheep repeating what their masters command. The "science" of the story is garbage, even grade schoolers can point out how much is wrong. On top of that is the endless repetition; if you're lucky, you get a paragraph of story before you face multiple pages of the characters repeating themselves, often nearly verbatim. I didn't get even a quarter through this mess before I gave up in disgust.
I got this book for free from Kindle, and I still overpaid.
Ok so this book had a lot of potential. Its started really good but about the 35-40% mark it started going off the rails. The author brought in 2 women who where absolute annoying entitled garbage and everything started getting bad. This book is just one giant political push from the author on there personal viewpoints and general sexism.
I love the storyline. Admittedly I'm not a professional reader but I've not read such as this. Original story, to me at least. Can't wait for next book in series.
