The Unified Colonies have existed beyond the asteroid belt for over a hundred years now. The war between them and Earth is escalating. What the Unified Colonies need in order to succeed is the element of surprise. The only thing standing between the formidable Unified Colony battle fleet and victory is Earth’s pre-warning defense system in the asteroid belt. The heart and soul of this pre-warning system is a series of outposts hidden among the asteroids. Can the crew of the Outpost warn Earth of the impending invasion in time to react?
I've really enjoyed the books I've read by Rick. This one was no exception. The story is told through journal entries by the members of the Outpost [mostly giving that person the POV of what is happening in the story - make sure you check to see whose making a journal entry, I didn't do that at the beginning and was quite confused when something happened totally out of character of the person I thought was speaking, but not for the person who actually did the journal entry], which takes place in an asteroid belt separating Earth from the other colonies on the farther away planets. These planets want to take over earth and war is imminent. The only thing standing between the two opponents are the Outposts in this asteroid belt. The characters are well flushed out, and each journal entry they post we learn more about them. The story keeps moving at a fast pace and is often very suspenseful. The ending was unexpected. This is a very good clean read.
