THE PRIEST’S FIRE [2022] By Daniel Scott
My Review Four Stars****
I began reading the second book in this series the minute I finished the last chapter of “The Surgeon’s Scalpel.” You might say that following the events that took place in the first book that there was a “reset” at the end, much like a chess game with the pieces put back on the board to begin the game all over again.
Luke is moving the pawns around the board (including our empath, the sympathetic young genius Christian). I must say that the premise of the megalomaniacal Luke outmaneuvering everyone on and off the chess board was frustrating at best. It is two years down the road from the events in the introductory novel, and Christian’s social skills are slowly developing, to include a budding relationship with Veronica, the investigative journalist featured in the first book.
Book 2 introduces a sick and yet sad villain ostensibly for the team to identity and neutralize. This time it is personal because the killer is offering up human sacrifices to Christian, who has been identified by the psychotic religious murderer as the man who will usher in the next coming of Christ. There are some fascinating details about the practices and beliefs of fringe religious groups who practice extreme measures (self-flagellation, self-asphyxiation, blood sacrifices and the like). However, again we have Luke as a master manipulator, a puppet master who is pulling the strings of all the players in the game, to include the “Priest,” his partner Tommy, and most of all Christian. In this second installment the ending was more troubling and disappointing than in the first outing. Christian’s fate, and his course are in the balance, but with Luke’s hand on the scale.
So, okay, then. I am sitting here writing my review(s) and deciding whether I will likely buy the last two installments next month, guess what I see? Now the “Heinous Crimes Unit” has morphed into a 5-Book Series with the fifth installment (“The Animals Hunt”) scheduled for release next month on January 13th.
These novels were originally released under the title “The Luke Titan Chronicles.” This is disclosed in the book descriptions. It looks like the series consisted of six (6) installments and was released in audiobooks in 2018, except the sixth book in the chronicles [“Titan”] which was available in January 2019. The author of “The Luke Titan Chronicles” is David Beers. The entire collection is available in audiobooks from Amazon. That informs me that there are at least three (3) more books to come, and possibly more because I spotted a title labelled “7-Titan Returns” in audiobook format.
The author (and/or Amazon) appropriately disclosed that these novels were previously released under a different title. It is immaterial when they were published or under what pen name. I would extrapolate that for some reason Beers opted to use the pen name of Daniel Scott. There are tons of listeners who loved “The Luke Titan Chronicles.” The customer reviews sounded like a devoted fan base to me. It looks like I will have more titles to consider than I previously thought. The one thing that gives me pause is that the popular author has obviously chosen the antihero of Luke Titan for the protagonist. I will have to “sleep on it” whether to tune in for more manipulations and devilment from the admittedly fascinating diabolical Luke Titan.
ANOTHER INTRIGUING ENTRY IN THE “HEINOUS CRIMES” DIVISION BOOK SERIES
