Sue-Ellen Welfonder & Allie Mackay

Sue-Ellen MacDuffie was born and raided in Florida. She is a card-carrying Scotophile whose burning wish to make frequent (free) trips to the land of her dreams led her to a twenty year career with the airlines. Bi-lingual, she flew international all those years, working her flights as foreign language speaker. Her flying career allowed her to see the world, but it was always to Scotland that she returned.

Now a full-time writer, she’s quick to admit that she much prefers wielding a pen to pushing tea and coffee. She spent fifteen years living in Europe and used that time to explore as many castle ruins, medieval abbeys, and stone circles as possible. Anything ancient, crumbling, or lichened caught her eye. She makes annual visits to Scotland, insisting they are a necessity as each trip gives her inspiration for new books.

Proud of her own Hebridean ancestry, she belongs to two clan societies: the MacFie Clan Society and the Clan MacAlpine Society. In addition to Scotland, her greatest passions are medieval history, the paranormal, and dogs. She never watches television, loves haggis, and writes at a four-hundred-and-fifty year old desk that once stood in a Bavarian castle.

Sue-Ellen is married and currently resides with her husband and Jack Russell Terrier in Florida. Readers can learn more about her and the world of her books at: www.welfonder.com.

I am a sucker for a supernatural element in a story so when I won this story in a blog giveaway I was excited to read it even though I don't read a lot of historicals.

When Catriona learns of the King's rule that the three clans will have to fight for the right to reign over the glen, she knows that she has to do something or many people will be killed but she isn't the only woman who decides to do something. James and Catriona don't get along through most of this book but they do have the hots for each other. The three clans don't really want to fight it seemed but they don't see any other way around it. But it doesn't happen right away so James and Catriona have some time to get to know one another better.

I loved Rannoch the mystical stag even more than the romance between James and Catriona. The romance between the hero and heroine was hard going even though they had sex and had the hots for each other. I didn't feel like the hero really cared about her. He felt a bit flat emotion wise to me so it was hard to see these two really working out until the ending.

I did like the secondary characters maybe even more than the lead characters in this story. The supernatural parts of this story were more fun for me than the rest of the story but the entire thing was a good read.

I know with all the good reviews something is wrong with me, but I didn‘t care for this book. I read to page 150 and found the hero and heroine still wasn’t on what you’d call real conversing terms, they knew each other and really have the hott’s for each other, but they are not getting together yet, even just to talk... I kept reading and got to page 190 and found now they had some hot sex, but wait they are still not on good speaking terms or together (so, I am bored now! Although the ghost is neat to read about)… I quit reading for a few days and went back again and read to the end and still didn’t like it. I’m not one for a relationship where the hero and heroine love’s each other, but they are never together until the end… Nope, not my cup of tea. This books does read like a historical, then it has the benefit of ghost, so you get a touch of paranormal. I know a lot of you that likes the emotional back in fourth between the hero and heroine will love this book.

This could have been more of an enjoyable read but way too much of the story was based on the lascivious thoughts of the hero and heroine. They hated each other and yet all their thoughts were on what they'd love to do to each other sexually!! I found myself getting irritated by it and it kind of ruined the story for me.

James and Catriona are from two different warring clans so a romance between them will not come easy....and it doesn't! Amidst the beautiful Highlands, three clans are ordered to do battle to the death, the King's way of solving the solution of who owns the glen they all live in. There is also unexpected paranormal events that enter the story which I did enjoy.

I could see what it was trying to do with the super natural element but just not well enough executed and not really enough romance either !!!

When the King's man comes to 'Glen Of Many Legends', to inform three clans that have been warring for years, that the time has come to resolve all matters. He informs all three Lairds of each clan that they will have to meet and battle and fight for one clan to reign over the Glen. When Lady Catriona hears along with her brother Alasdair, of these summons, so is full of rage. Catriona is very passionate about her home and her clan and views the other two clans as enemies. But she also knows that the King's orders will mean the death of many. James Cameron has always had a firm belief in knowing that the Glen belongs to him and his clan and not the other two clans. When he is informed, he is outraged, knowing what this will mean. He knows he will have to do all that is necessary to secure this place as his. Then he finds a forbidden love in the arms of Catriona MacDonald, who even though is his enemy, she is also a woman he finds that he can't resist. Her passion and desire only ignites the fire within him, and even though he must prepare his men for the battle to come, he also can't resist the fiery storm in Catriona.Sins Of A Highland Devil is the first installment in the Highland Warriors trilogy. This trilogy is about three women who make a pact with each other to defend their homes and each other, and three proud highlanders willing to fight with everything they have to protect their clans. In the past I have just loved every book that I have had a chance to read by this author. Even though I did enjoy the plot and the story for the most part, I also didn't enjoy it as much as I thought. The main aspect that I had a hard time with was the romance. I felt like it was out of place in this story. I didn't really see much of a love connection, or how it could really happen. There was definitely many heated moments, some that were very sensual. However I didn't see a whole lot of a love story. I think maybe my expectations may have been too high, and so I ended up feeling a bit disappointed. There were times that I felt lost through the story as I was reading, and I didn't see much of a smooth flow of the story. I did however really like the characters, both James and Catriona were priceless. Both warriors in their own way, and willing to fight with every breath. I loved seeing them together, and seeing them challenge each other was unforgettable. I did enjoy the way Welfonder weaves a magical story set in a beautiful Glen that seemed mystical at times. It was also action packed, and swoon worthy at various times, but overall I think it just didn't fully satisfy me. However there were quite a few things that I did like about this one, so I do plan on reading the rest of the series.

Would you believe I just won this book through FirstReads? My luck is definitely not good enough for this to be remotely random; obviously my ridiculous level of activity on the site is being rewarded! I may never have to go to the library again!!! Anyway, as one reader labeled this book, I'll enjoy reading about "highland hunks in kilts."

Okay, now that I've finished reading... This book was a bit different than my usual fare - I typically stay away from covers sporting bare-chested men, because (assuming you CAN tell a book by its cover) they're usually filled with sex, fluff, and not much else. The first hundred pages of this one stayed true to form. It was heavy on blood-boiling glances and lustful desires, and pretty light on storyline. I have to admit, though, that it vastly improved as the pages whirred by. I ended up liking the characters quite a bit, and was pleasantly surprised by the ONE bedroom scene in the entire novel. The ending sets the outline nicely for the rest of trilogy. In the right mood, I might even read the next book!

I loved the supernatural element to the story and Scandia, the ghost, had a much more interesting and romantic love story than Catriona did. However, I did like how Catriona wanted to help Scandia and felt sympathy for her.

For me, this book would have been better if I had liked the hero more and if the story had been more romantic. I just didn't feel like the hero and heroine felt anything more than lust for each other. James kept saying he loved Catriona, but he didn't show it. He always pushed her away when he started to actually feel anything for her.

My favorite character was Rannoch, the mystical deer stag. I especially had a soft spot for Rannoch because the author's note at the beginning told of the inspiration for his character.

I loved the supernatural characters, including Scandia and the deer Rannoch, but I wanted to see more love between the two leads.

Three clans inhabit the beloved Glen of Many Legends; the MacDonald’s, Cameron’s and Macintoshes–and each view the land as their own. Blood and pride in heritage run deep on these rocky grounds, unleashing a fierce sense of duty and preservation for each of their clans. The king has issued a harsh, blood-tinted decree–a fight between the clans to claim the Glen, whoever has the most men standing in the end takes possession. Tensions run high as the bitter day approaches—life on these cherished grounds will never be the same.

Catriona MacDonald–sister of her clan chieftain, with a strong-willed mind of her own, cherishes the glen and its legacy. She defiantly walks all the grounds of the glen, leading her into the path of rival chieftain James Cameron. Sparks fly when they meet, igniting a smoldering passion that grows over time, consuming both of them. Will their rival clan heritage and centuries of feuding extinguish their desires?

As the epic battle begins, hearts grow heavy, mourning for the destruction that will come. Spirits of the glen bring their magic to strengthen the ones in this life they hold dearest–but will it be enough to avert tragedy? An enchanting tale of love, steamy encounters and kindred souls reluctantly brought together by a king’s whim, and the dedication the love of the glen brings to unite them. A great read, highly recommended!

I tried to read this as my first honest-to-goodness bodice-ripper romance. I gave it more than a hundred pages. I don't know whether books in this genre normally have characters spend so much time thinking about the object of their affection, and get hot and bothered, but not actually doing anything or the plot moving forward an inch, but that was really to much for me. I couldn't finish it. There wasn't even a real sex scene until page 175 or so, which maybe was too long of a wait for me.

The only reason I didn’t DNF this book is because I didn’t want my last book of the year to be an unfinished one. For the life of me, I will never understand why some romance authors think that a borage of verbal abuse is sexual foreplay. The two main characters tear each other up verbally while fantasizing about heaving breasts and swelling manhood. Maybe some readers like that, but for me it’s repellant and tedious to read. I would not spend my time in real life with a couple who does nothing but fight and rip on each other in front of me. The same is true for book characters.

There is an element of the paranormal in this book due to the magic of the Glen. This provides ghostly characters as well as prophecies. I did like some of this and it prevented this book from being a one star read for me.

Beyond the above, the story was overly sexualized to the detriment of an interesting plot. Literally nothing happens anywhere without James obsessing over Catriona’s body in some way or about her “fire” (which is actually just bitchiness). There was nothing romantic about it at all.

I don’t think this author is for me at all. I have no intention of continuing the series.

Romantic Highland Saga with layers of Myth

Three Clans, three leaders, and their respective sisters take centre stage in Sins of a Highland Devil. For generations, the McDonalds, Camerons, and the Macintoshes have fought about the right to rule the Glen of Many Legends. Now the King has forced the issue, the clans must fight to the death to win their claim.

The political tension goes much further and the whys and wherefores run in the background of this romantic saga.

Catriona MacDonald crosses the path of James Cameron, not for the first time. The straightforward clan tension between them has added layers of passion and attraction, something they both deny.

Will the battle of clans bring release? To find out, you must read this magical story of love, ghosts, ancient helpers, wily Scotsmen, bloodthirsty Lowlanders, and the beautiful Highland nature.

Sue-Ellen Welfonder brings her characters to life with consummate skill. The narrative is full of wonders and beautifully crafted legends, unexpected encounters, and a landscape whose beauty can move the earth.

Whew James and Catriona should come with a warming label “hot handle with care!”
Catriona and James have sparks of attraction for years and since he is the enemy Catriona knows it can’t lead anywhere?
But an edict from the King puts them all on the same side even temporary because no clan wants to leave the Glen their ancestors fought for! It is in their blood!
Catriona is a warrior woman who flay a man with her tongue and slice his bollocks off with her dirk!
She is loyal to Alastair her brought but definitely had the hots for James!
Ugh I liked James until he acted rashly and then warred with himself as his action we’re Not noble!!
Catriona did not let on she felt any of his charms she was equally resistant at first ever the proud Highlander she would not now to any man!
Can the enemy hiding in the shadows be exposed!? Will the feud between the 3 clans end in bloodshed gir James and his clan!?
It looks hopeless as these clans are wild and bold and face destiny head on!!
Can James redeem himself if he survives the battle? Read on… it’s a rollercoaster ride! Hang on!!

This was a nice read

Sue-Ellen always writes such nice books. I really enjoy reading hers after some of the books I have read which have a poor plot, not very detailed or in depth, run and repeat on thoughts and words, and some pretty shallow clueless characters.
I know when I pick up one her books and read it that it will be above and beyond many rest.
If you think this book is bla and not very good then I believe you should read some of the books I've read...it will change your mind quickly.
I don't like to give detailed info on books because I feel it ruins the reading experience to say more than the author has already told.
Ill just say its a good book. I enjoyed reading it.

I fell in love with this book from page one, the attraction between James Cameron and Catriona MacDonald was strong for some years, but the clans were enemies, the story has a touch of the supernatural with ghosts and people that can for see the future! Story moves with a fast pace, involving three clans in all,the Cameron clan, MacDonald clan ,and MacKintosh clan! Loved James and Catriona is a very strong woman who knows what she wants and goes out to get it. Catriona brother Aladair has a older dog I thought was adorable, there is a battle scenes between the three clans that was so realistic, I almost could feel their pain! The complete story was one of the best I've read in some time, I'd recommend this book to anyone that enjoys historical Scottish Highlanders, Fantastic story!

Wanting to put an end to the warring between the 3 clans, the king declares a trial by combat between the clans with the winner to control the Glen of Many Legends. Caitriona and James are from 2 of the warring clans but have wanted each other for many years. As the clans prepare for the contest, Caitriona and James are constantly thrown together and things go from infatuation to steaming.
Fortunately, none of the 3 clan chiefs die and Caitriona and James end up married.
This is the first book in the trilogy; I am looking forward to reading the other 2 books 📚.

Steamy Highlander Romance

Fantasy type romance, with ghosts, myth, legends and an enchanted Stag. This was about people, past and present, who love the Legacy they share in this Highland glen. Strong irresistibly handsome warrior heroes, beautiful courageous heroines. King James decides he will end the clan rivalry and failed alliances with one battle. 30 premier warriors from each clan will fight it out until the last warrior standing to become the leader of The Legacy of the Glen. Interesting storyline. Well written by Sue Ellen Welfonder.

Enjoyed

This is the first time I have read anything from this author and I did love the story line. It combines mystery, magic, heartbreak, characters hold their own and invite you to scream (just get a grip) my only complaint is that there is much repeated conversation that often lead to confusion. Could have actually removed about 100 pages and had a better book. Anyway I am looking forward to the next in the series

My Synopsis:

The Glen of Many Legends has housed 3 feuding clans for years. The Clan MacDonalds, Camerons, and Mackintoshes all lay claim to parts of this Glen and each feel they are the rightful sole owner of the Glen. Bad blood and many deaths all lay between the clans. More recent years the bloodshed is less and they have all learned to grudgingly tolerant each others presents but all are still sworn enemies. With a death of one woman this sort of truce is shatter. The woman in question is birth a MacDonald but was twice widowed. Her late husbands were Camerons and Mackintoshes. She was the hereditary heiress to the Glen. She did not leave a will so with her death each Clan has claimed her so that they can lay claim to all of the Glen. The King after receiving complaints from the Clans about one another resolves to stop the squabbling by issuing a fight to the death. Last man standing from one of the clans will be declared the rightful owner of Glen of Many Legends.

Catriona MacDonald is upset that the King has issued this decree and does not want her brother Alasadair or any of her fellow clansmen to die. Catriona knows that her clan and the Camerons and Mackintoshes will not back away from this decree because if they do not fight then the clans would be forced to move from their homes. Plus no honorable highlander ever backs away from a good fight. She loathes the lowlander and the nobles who have invaded her home to set up the place where the slaughter will take place. She is further annoyed by James Cameron the Chieftain of Clan Cameron. Several years back she had a run in with him that left her fascinated with him. She realizes she has compared every man to him and hasn't been able to forget his threat to kiss her if he ever found her trespassing on his land.

James Cameron has never been able to forget Catriona either. He has tried his best through the years to give her a wide berth when they've crossed paths. He is annoyed with himself for lusting after his enemies sister. After years of avoiding Catriona their paths cross again one early morning. Sensing danger nearby James is forced to intercede Catriona's trek across his land. Catriona has been walking across his land every morning since the lowlanders invaded their home to stare daggers and make it known that she does not welcome them here. Once these two paths cross again they each realize the attraction is strong between them and neither has been able to forget the other. With their clans forced to fight one another, the bad blood between their families and another unknown enemy, will this unlikely pairing be able to survive these obstacles?

My Thoughts:

This was the first book that I've ever read by this author and I'm looking forward to reading more of her books especially the upcoming ones in this series. The storyline was entertaining and the couple were sizzling. I love these enemy/lover story-lines so this was right up my alley. Catriona was headstrong, independent and spunky. She knows what she wants and she goes for it. Poor James Cameron didn't know what hit him once she set out to seduce him. As for James he's your typical highlander alpha male. I loved him. I can't resist a sexy highlander I tell you! I kept laughing every time he was trying to have serious discussion and such but his mind kept wandering back to Catriona. Dirty thoughts our boy James had about Catriona..hehe! The other characters in the book kept me glued to this book as well. I can't wait for other stories in this series. Kendrew Mackintosh the Chieftain of the Mackintosh clan is the one I'm most looking forward to next. Loved his craziness. I love that each Chieftain had sisters who have teamed up to make sure that peace reigns for the Clans that live in this glen. I only had two complaints about this book. I really could have done without the ghost story and all the mythical magical stuff. I thought too much time was spent on all the mythical stuff. It made the book drag a bit for me when those storyline came up in the book. My other complaint was the unknown bad guys. I didn't feel like they were necessary except to add a little thrill at the end there for James to come in and save the day.

Even with those two things I thoroughly enjoyed the book and will be buying the next book in this series. If you love reading stories set in Scotland with sexy highlanders and spunky heroines then you'll enjoy this book too.

Sins of a Highland Devil by Sue-Ellen Welfonder
Historical Romance – Jan. 25th, 2011
4 stars

Poetic and wild, Sue-Ellen Welfonder creates a real and lush highland landscape. The author brings together two wild and stubborn characters that clash from the very start.

Catriona MacDonald is as fiery as she is beautiful. When an envoy from the King proclaims their land must be fought over, she fears for her brother’s life because the land in question is wanted by three clans, which all three clans have claimed as theirs. In a brutal decree, all three clans have to choose warriors to fight against each other until only one stands and wins.

Catriona feels the upcoming battle is senseless but does not know how to escape this royal ruling. She is also annoyed by one of the rival clan’s men. The handsome and brawny James Cameron who seems to irritate her and set her heart racing at every turn. She tries to fight her attraction to this arrogant highlander. But James saves her and Catriona finally acknowledges that maybe she does care for him.

James Cameron is tormented by dreams of the lovely Catriona. He tries to convince himself that she is just a woman, no different for any other but seeing her in danger bothers him even if she is his enemy and being in her company fires his blood. However, James knows that she loves her brother and if he is forced to kill him, any relationship between them seems doomed from the start.

The start of the novel is very dramatic as the King decrees that that there will be a battle to the death for the contested land. However, it quickly focuses on Catriona and James. They spar against each other even as they try to hide their emotions. James typifies the noble, wild and unconquered highlander, and Catriona is the beautiful and willful hellion that captures his heart. Their love is filled with strife and passion. I enjoyed it when they began to slowly trust and care for each other. I also liked that there is a little magic in this story that makes it feel more mystical. The King's ruling makes for a lot of tension but for some reason the battle among the three clans does not immediately occur so there is plenty of time for James and Catriona to get to know each other better and for me to wonder how the story could end in other than tragedy.

This has the feel of the highland, and James and Catriona are as untamed as Scotland. They are both were fierce, headstrong and perfect for each other. Theirs is a tempestuous love that is exciting and magical to read.

I have been in sort of a "historical slump", a slump I thought included highlanders. Oh, boy, was I wrong!

As the book opens, the last owner of the Glen has died, leaving descendants in each of the three Clans that live in the Glen. The King has ordered the three Clans to each put up 30 men, who will fight to the last one standing. The victorious clan will own the Glen. Alasdair MacDonald has just received the messenger bearing the news and he is not happy. Catriona, his sister, can't believe her ears - men will needlessly die. They know, however, to defy the King is impossible.

James Cameron, The Cameron, is upset that he must fight for what he believes is his. He doesn't want his men's blood spilled in a fight that will be nothing more than entertainment for the Lowlanders, but he knows he cannot go against the Kings wishes. One morning he goes out to seek counsel from his Seers, and he comes across Catriona wandering through his woods. He's attracted to her, but his honor requires that he sees her home to her brother safely. While he is at the MacDonald holding, James discusses some strange incidents with Alasdair. They are in agreement that they do not wish to fight but agree there is no other way.

James and Catriona are both captivated by the other, but they know they cannot be together as their clans have been enemies for centuries. They keep running into each other (sometimes on purpose, lol) and lust blooms. Love blooms too although neither will admit it...

Sins of a Highland Devil was absolutely enchanting; the characters were delightful to read and I was interested in each of their stories, not just the hero/heroine. Catriona was a willful, fiery-haired heroine, in love with James Cameron but too proud to show it. James Cameron was an honorable clan chief, his want to do the right thing warring against his want to ravish Catriona. We also meet Catriona's brother, Alasdair, who is a very strong secondary character - honorable but with a sense of humor - as well as James' sister, Isobel, and the third Clan chief, Kendrew Mackintosh and his sister, Marjory. James has a second-in-command, Colin, whom I hope we see again somewhere in the next two books :)

Sins of a Highland Devil had a bit of magic to it, with Seers and ghosts and a surprising secondary love story. As I read, it felt like I was there, in the Highlands, listening to this wonderful love story, complete with battles and dragons and legends and lore. This is the first of Ms. Wellfonder's Highland Warriors Trilogy, and I cannot wait to read the next two books!

SINS OF A HIGHLAND DEVIL by Sue-Ellen Welfonder
Book #1 in the Highland Warriors Trilogy
01/01/11 - Grand Central Publishing - Mass Market Paperback, 400 pages

Strong men and mysterious ways make for a sizzling and romantic read

When one clan lays claim to a piece of land there is the devil in trying to keep it in the family. When three clans inherit one piece of property and the only way to determine who winds up with it in the end is a battle to the death, the hounds of hell come calling.

But even amongst all the chaos of war and the determination to win there is a man that crosses path with a woman and regardless of how the battle ends these two will change the destiny of so many and that is the present couple as well as the one from the past. They are from opposite sides of the battlefield but when you have your heart beating as one the lines drawn start to blue and the ice that is frozen and keeping you apart starts to crack and thaw good things can happen.

This is the case for Lady Catriona a fiery woman who will fight anyone who dare cross her even when that someone is a man she has loved since childhood. James Cameron teased and tormented Catriona and while he no longer pulls her hair he still likes to taunt her with cryptic words, tease with his devilish smile and tempt her with oh so sweet kisses. But James is with part another clan and not sure who will die on the battlefield yet knows he very well might be Catriona’s brother and clansmen.

The battle is looming and fast approaching but Catriona still craves the feel of James’ lips pressed to hers and knows she is breaking all the rules but still chases after him. She clutches her amber necklace for good luck and prays that the shadows she feels are chasing her are mist and fog not the devil himself. There is much trickery going on and allot of the past of caught up in the present but still Catriona fights for her right to be with James and win him and his heart over.

There is such passion and intensity in this first book that I can’t wait to read the others. Catriona is charming and wildly protective of her brother and clan but James is so strong with his emotions and gushes with testosterone to the point it is coming through the pages of the book. Fabulous!
