Lilac lives on a Welsh hillside with her very patient husband and incredibly sweet dog, where she grows veggies (if the slugs don't get them), bakes (badly) and loves making things out of glitter and glue (a mess, usually).
She's been an avid reader ever since she got her hands on a copy of Noddy Goes to Toytown when she was five, and she once tried to read everything in her local library starting with A and working her way through the alphabet.
She loves long, hot summer days in the garden, and cold winter ones snuggled in front of the fire, but whatever the weather she's usually writing, or thinking about writing, with heartwarming romance and happy-ever-afters always on her mind.
This is the third book in the Tanglewood Village series and follows Edie, a single mom who works at the wedding shop in the village, and James, a member of the upper-crust. Edie is secretly designing a second wedding dress for society bride Tia, who is not happy with her mother-in-law's choice. When she meets best man James, there's an immediate spark between them. But they're from completely different worlds and Edie is convinced that their relationship will never work.
The Tanglewood Wedding Shop by Lilac Mills is a heartwarming and romantic story, with realistic characters, a lovely setting, and a sweet romance. The plot is engaging, well-paced, and kept me hooked until the last page. If you have read the previous books in this series, then you'll be happy to see some familiar faces in this book. I enjoyed getting to know the residents of Tanglewood village and will be reading more books in this series. If you enjoy cozy romances, then I highly recommend this.
Thank you to NetGalley and Canelo for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Easily my favourite book of this Tanglewood series - it has adorable animals, wedding dresses, a really lovely child, a fabulous book boyfriend and Edie who is just trying to make ends meet and provide for her son.
First up I really need to say how much I really disliked both Moira, Edie's boss at the Wedding dress shop, and also Tia's mother in-law Julia. If they both such frustrating people, then Tia would never had to ask Edie to make her dream wedding dress come true, and and Edie may not have ended up in the sticky situation she was in.
Although it is thanks to Tia, that Edie gets to spend time with James and its clear even if neither of them seem to realise it, that there is a connection between them, and that it could be only a matter of time.
James is fascinating, he is so keen on wildlife and conservation, and his choices of locations to take Edie on dates are rather different. Although personally I'm not sure I would have fancied visiting an apiary no matter how much I may want to get to know the man.
And I just loved Mary, she was adorable and some of the scenes involving her were both funny and hare-raising.
Although it reads well as a standalone, I started this mere hours after I finished book 2 in the series and I'm so glad I did, as it made a lovely change to read books in a series one after another, thus instantly feeling at home with the characters, the recurring characters (Betty is such a tonic!), the location and of course the engaging writing style.
I really did enjoy every single moment I spent with Edie and James, and thoroughly enjoyed this book which I raced through in under a day.
Thank you to Canelo and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Absolutely Loved this series , Great enjoyable reads .
Edie has enough on her plate keeping her tyrannical boss happy at Moira’s wedding shop . So when society bride Tia begs Edie to design her wedding dress - and keep it a secret from the domineering mother- in - law -to -be- Edie reluctantly says ‘I Will’. But if her deception is found out , it would mean losing her job …
Meanwhile , best man James is proving ever harder for Edie to resist . But James is upper - crust and Edies one unexpected bill away from the breadline .There’s no way it can work between them … right ?
I really wanted to enjoy this book - the storyline was brilliant and the blurb had me hooked despite not reading the others in the series. I was hesitant to write a review but I wish I'd read one like this before I read the book. The writing was tedious and overdone and the characters, particularly judgemental Edie, were hard to read. Edie is an incredibly unlikeable character - if you're a single mother who doesn't spend every waking minute working or with your child Edie would certainly judge you for it! Some stand out examples were that she insisted her first two dates included her child whilst judging a school mum for introducing her son to new boyfriends, she presumed James was rich and jobless and judged him for it and she hadn't had a night out/to herself in eight years because she has a child. The way Edie thinks about kissing as a grown adult is bizarre, in fact her entire internal monologue was painful to read, which followed the rest of the novel in over explaining everything. James is a problematic character too, turning up at Edie's door unannounced with ridiculous 'gifts', waiting outside her house for her and her son - definitely stalker territory. There were LOTS of eyeroll moments throughout but I persevered to the end only for it to be a couple of quickly written and disappointing paragraphs.
I chose this book because I enjoyed the previous book in the series (The Tanglewood Flower Shop). Unfortunately, I was rather disappointed.
Mild spoilers below.
The overwhelming problem was that I strongly disliked both of the main characters. Edie was very judgemental, both of James, jumping to the conclusion that he’s rich and doesn’t work, and of people in general. She thinks “you never see a poor farmer”! Most farmers are very poor indeed, they do it for the love of it, not the money. Edie also jabs a pin into a bridesmaid because they were discussing setting her (the bridesmaid) up with James.
James is twice emotionally manipulative towards Edie near the beginning of the book, and combined with the way he thinks about her, and treats her generally, makes me think he is very likely a controlling person. He refers to her as a “little seamstress” and “his little doe”. I worry he would become even more emotionally abusive as time goes on. He also waits outside her house for her and Danny (her son) to get home. That is creepy, when you’ve only been on one date! There are many more worrying signs, but I won’t bore you with them. He seems to want to please her, but doesn’t bother actually asking what she wants.
However, I did enjoy the last quarter or so (though there was plenty of Edie jumping to conclusions AGAIN). James seemed a little less creepy/controlling. Although I don’t like Edie, I hope James either learns to listen properly, or she and Danny manage to escape from him.
I really liked the wedding shop, the fact that a disabled person was included, but wasn’t an object of pity, and many of the other characters. But this book was REALLY not my cup of tea. I think I’ll avoid the author in future.
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Loved it!!! This was by far my favorite book in the series. Mary the rabbit was the star of the book. Who can resist a cute bunny, especially one being taken out on walks? The book overlapped with the timeline of the second book with Leanne(Flower Shop.) Stevie made more of an appearance than she did in the previous book. Loved Edie and James. They communicated a bit more than Rex and Leanne, but Edie still overreacted at times and jumped to conclusions without fully knowing the truth. I love reading about Tanglewood and hope there's a few more books to the series. I wished Tia would have spoken up a bit more. She can't blame her mother-in-law for everything. Tia could have said no to the dress.
Definitely recommend the book and the previous books in the series. Look forward to reading more books by the author.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Canelo through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This review is really hard for me to write. I could not finish this book. I had a really hard time keeping my interest in the writing and i dont know if that is because I have not read the other 2 in the series or because the side items revolving the couple did not interest me. It really threw me off how the mention of being "poor" was thrown in so much and made me feel more sorry for the characters then wanting to read a romance.
Thank you to netgalley for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Another wonderful book in the Tangelwood series by Lilac Mills! I absolutely adored reading this one! It's a page-turner. It's a cozy read with nice characters, a very good storyline, a nice romance and lots of events! I give this book a 4 stars out of 5! I want to read everything by Lilac Mills! She is a very good chick-lit writer!!!
Lovely, cosy read. I’ve read the earlier books in the series and this one doesn’t disappoint. Always lovely to see how old characters are faring and lovely to meet new ones. Entertaining and enjoyable. Recommended read.
Loving this series around Tanglewood!! Just purchased the 4th (Bookshop) and immediately location & characters are intertwined. Been fun to find a series that draws you in to the characters, relationships, & makes you laugh/smile reading. Money well spent ⭐️’s
Possibly my favorite of the series! Loved the continuance of characters from the previous two books and new characters Edie, Danny and James. Looking forward to reading the fourth book!
A wedding shop story with difference. We are not reading about the shop but the seamstress, who does not own the shop, but makes and designs the gowns - for a pittance due to a mean shop owner. We have a cute village which emphasises just how remote some of our Welsh ( and Welsh Border) villages can be, lacking the amenities of travel if you don’t have a car, with rare and unreliable buses. Overall a sweet story within the genre but no real bite and a rather wishy-washy heroine.
The writing in this book was pretty poor although I did like the story. A lot of the speech is just pure exposition with unnatural phrasing, mainly about conservation. A lot of the speech reads like it was written for a GCSE drama piece. It’s an easy quick read with a nice storyline but the dialog made me cringe more than once. I expect slightly more from the third book in a series which I would usually forgive if this was book 1.
4.2/5 🚨TW: irresponsible guy who left when found out she is pregnant, being used, being controlled. 🚨CW: mild language, hot kisses.
Edie was being used by her boss as she made all the wedding dress designs herself taking the credit. She was hired because she desperately need a job to take care of her son who now is 8 years old. She is a single mom and really had a hard time. She is happy with designing the wedding dresses and seeing the bride glow when they love her dresses.
One day, she met Tia who is not very happy when her future-mother-in-law is taking control of everything for her wedding. Tia doesn't have a say to her wedding and even for her wedding dress but Tia is not having it and secretly asked James the best man which is William's best friend to help approached Edie to make a second dress and she had to do it discreetly without anyone knowing. Edie was afraid at first but feeling that all brides have the right to choose their dresses, she gave in and did it discreetly with the help of James of course. As they work together, they feelings grow and it was actually love at first sight for James. And James will do anything to help her and to also win her love. He is just such a gentleman and sweet at the same time. He is always there for her whenever she needs him.
He was really good with her son, Danny who also adores him. Haha... and kind of also a match maker to this relationship as well and not to forget our main matchmaker when there is anything about love relationship, Betty will in the picture hahaha... to help them realised their love for each other. haha... and also the rabbit that James gave Danny is so cuteeeeee... Okay better not spoil so many things you will have to read it to know it.
I read this because a bridal salon features prominently in the novel. Basically, this is a modern day Cinderella story. However, Edie (Cinderella), is fairly unlikeable because she is judgement, jumps to conclusions, and becomes hysterical very easily. Most of her problems she created for herself. She stayed at a minimum wage job (in a bridal shop) for 6 years where the boss treats her like a slave. She also takes work home to sew on her own time, not for her own side hustle but for the boss. Edie is crazy and stupid. This situation is a huge plot hole because sensible people would not stay in such a toxic situation. Also Edie is an unwed mother, and that is apparently her excuse for allowing her self to remain trapped. Again, whose fault is any of this? Once she gets sacked for bringing her kid to work and the kid spills juice on a custom made wedding gown, she finds another job almost immediately because she has such great friends. The romance is corny. The guy launches the relationship by bringing Edie a stray pet rabbit that proceeds to occupy far too much of the story. The whole thing is terribly corny and even annoying. However, it is entertaining. It reminds me of a soap opera. As for the bridal salon, the wicked stepmother (bridal shop owner) decided to retire after she sacked Edie who essentially ran her business and provided the custom design work that attracted clients. The salon owner mismanaged the place blatantly. This was part of her character, but I also wonder how much research the author might have done to create this scenario. That bridal salon would have failed long before Edie came to work there.
This is the 3rd book in this series and it was so nice to be back again to visit Tanglewood and all its inhabitants. This story concentrates in Edie, she is a single Mum who is the designer and seamstress in the local wedding shop. When she and Mrs C, the owner of the shop, are asked make a dress for Tia, the local society bride they agree. However, Tia is not happy that her future Mother-in-Law has chosen the design, the material. Tia wants Edie to make her another dress, one that she wants to wear. In order for this to happen Edie must go behind her employers back and make the dress in her own time and hope that her secret is not found out until the wedding or she will lose her job and house. To help get Edie and all the dress paraphernalia to and from fittings Tia enlists the help of the best man James. James is drawn to Edie from the first meeting and he does all he can to help her, he also becomes friends with her son. Can this weeding dress really stay a secret or will it all end in tears? I enjoyed seeing the development of Edie and James’s relationship, I loved the interest he showed in her son and how he involved him in a number of their dates. I didn’t like the way Mrs C treated Edie; she was not a character you could like. It was also nice to see what was happening to other characters from the previous books. I did however find it annoying that some of the scenes from the previous book that took place in the wedding shop were put into this book as well.
I’m probably being too generous. These books are very mediocre and I cannot understand how they have such high ratings.
What I do enjoy about these books are: they’re light hearted, super quick reads, and provide an escape to a sweet little village that you immediately want to visit or move to.
What drives me nuts about these books are how unrealistic and simple they are. You know they’ll end happily ever after but the relationship storylines are so blah. And it would be nice if they had at least a smidge of heat to them but they are SUPER pg. Not even pg-13. They just feel very elementary.
I will say, out of the 3, this one at least provided more of a storyline to build the relationship. The other two were like: they met, the guy is in love but she’s not into it, they go on one date and now they’re madly in love. This book had more of a journey and established more of a foundation.
I’d provably give this (and all of them) more of a 3.5.
The final in the Tanglewood trilogy was just as wonderful as the first two. Edie, a single mother dreaming of designing dresses while being paid a pittance to alter them. James, the handsome returnee to the village with environmentally friendly ideas for his derelict cottage but no money to execute them any time soon. Young Danny so innocent but wise. Mary - undoubtedly the heart of the story! Of course I can't forget Betty who steals the show again with her wit and mothering of the village residents. The characters we gave come to love over the rest of the trilogy are of course on hand to help Edie and James realise their dreams and fall in love. Such a warm, happy, writing style that I have really enjoyed.
