Tasked with protecting the Pendragon's and with time running out, Merle must convince the Knights of the Round Table that she can claim Merlin's magic and defeat Morgwese, before the fae bring ruin to them all.

Gabby presents a contemporary spin-off to the myth of Merlin and the Knights of the round table. This YA Urban fantasy tells the story of Merle, who is supposedly the heir of Merlin the Wizard itself. Will she be it? Do all the misfortunes that occurred to his family be for nothing? All these questions are solved in this Book1 of this series. Book 1 because this is the first of a promising series, and the awesome cliffhanger at the end will make you want to keep reading this story!
Great and truly entertaining reading. If you like YA Urban fantasies, this is totally for you!
I'll try to keep this review brief. I didn't enjoy the book.
For one thing, our main character is supposed to be 21 but reads like a 15 year old. Nothing at all about her is mature and I actually forgot that she was supposed to be an adult. It's because of how she talks, she just sounds young. Then there's the way she argues with her aunt. Not to mention she works at a job that doesn't pay her, which felt like it was just an excuse to have her meet Ren, the love interest. He reads just as young as she does.
There are even three mean girl style bullies that go after Merle. Which was a pretty bland cliché.
When it comes to personality and voice, none of the characters were very strong for me. I could tell them apart but they didn't jump off the page. And after a while I stopped caring too much.
The character's reactions are also something I didn't really enjoy. In the beginning she blows up two coffee cups by thinking about it essentially. Her reaction to this event wasn't one I would expect and then here's Ren going "I saw what you did" and laughing as if that doesn't make him seem like a creep. Although Merle doesn't seem to bothered by him because she's all giddy about a boy she's never even met before.
The romance between them made no sense to me because there was no chemistry. I could not figure out why they were interested in each other aside from the fact the plot needed it.
By the time all the action started happening, I didn't care. A lot of the writing was bland and the pacing was off. From sentence to sentence things got pretty jumpy and choppy.
I liked the premise but at the end of the day it just didn't feel like it was executed well.
I received an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received an ebook arc copy in exchange for my honest review.
While there is intrigue in this book, I can’t say it captured my attention fully. Gabby did a wonderful job writing this novel as her debut! Seriously kudos! The King Arthur aspect with wizards mixed with fae is a great concept.
Here’s my constructive criticism..
I do believe this is aimed at a much younger audience, therefore I couldn’t immerse myself completely into the story. Merle is aged at 20 going on 21, but her character acted much more 15/16ish in my eyes. So I did age her down in the book. The family dynamic between her aunts and her mom and herself didn’t really make much sense to me either. She worked for free at a coffee shop? Which I didn’t understand. Had no friends her own age. There was a mean girl scene from girls at her old school, which would have made more sense of the characters were aged down. Merle was very quick to anger. Everything made her angry. She was fine then one little thing happened and BAM! Rage, fury, seething anger! Then it just bubbled down until the next scene where she got angry again. I found myself telling her to calm down a lot.. I just could not relate to her. I also could not find a lot of depth between Merle and the main love interest Ren. Ren, which I also aged down to the 15/16ish age, didn’t have anything special going on about him. He was a bit bland. There was an excessive use of exclamation marks when his character was involved. Which took me out of the story.
Pacing was a bit off for me, slow at times and then a lot of action at the end.
Also, a lot of info dumping. It would be long paragraphs of names being dropped from all the different family trees of Camelot, and long history lessons that I found my eyes going unfocused while I tried to pay attention. You know when your sitting in history class and the teacher is talking for 30 mins straight without a break and your looking at them but not really hearing them? Kinda like that. I was not a great student..
While this book wasn’t for me, I can see a lot of others enjoying it. I think this is an amazing debut novel! I have to commend Gabby for writing this and putting it out into the world. Good on her! I can’t wait to see what else she does.
Everyone will have a different experience reading so these are just my opinions.
I received an ARC of this book and was very excited to read it. There are vague spoilers here, but nothing crazy. Note: I rate books mostly in my overall enjoyment I had while reading.
I really enjoyed the King Arthur concept in this book as it is one I don’t typically read a lot of. The book follows 20-year-old Merle, the heir of Merlin, as she discovers who she is and what it means for her future. She meets other Arthurian heirs and is thrust into an entirely new life she thought was just stories. This story has tragic loss, found family, a little romance, and magic.
The beginning was a little slow for me. Based on the synopsis I wasn’t sure if it was based in a modern world or a fantasy world. Merle has a weird family dynamic as her father has been missing for years and her mother has gone a little crazy. She has no friends her own age, a job she does for no actual pay, and sees shadow people. Then she meets Ren and things happen, she learns who she really is, her mother is killed, and she joins the Templar.
At the Templar she meets new friends and a few less friendly people. Even though she is has powerful magic she has to prove to be the heir of Merlin before she can actually perform a test to… prove she is the heir. And this is all so she can use her power to help defeat a really old witch who still holds a grudge.
Overall, I actually really enjoyed this read. I base my rating based on how much I liked the book and wanted to keep reading. I enjoyed the diversity in characters, both LGBTQ and BIPOC. I loved the concept. Plus, I love it when a young girl really gets to stick it to old white guys.
I thought the beginning was a little slow and then the last bit of the book happened too quickly. I wish there were more private interactions between Merle and Ren (the love interest) as we mostly see them interacting in public. It would’ve been nice to learn more about him. I’m also really hoping we get a lot more details about the new world Merle has been thrown into.
I can’t wait for Book 2.

- “Magic is rare. That’s true, so rare it might seem unreal.” - “Fate has a funny was of putting you exactly where you need to be.”
I will start off by saying that I really enjoyed reading this book and I thought that it was very well written.
Willow was definitely one of my favourite characters! She was really funny and reminded me so much of one of my bookish friends.
I found that Merle did act very immaturely for her age at times but towards the end of the book she starts standing up for herself more and turning into the badass FMC that I love to read about in books. We definitely need to see more of that in the next book!
I would’ve liked to have learnt more about Ren in this book. It was really hard to connect with him when we weren’t really given much information about him.
Overall I had a good time reading this book and I will be adding the physical copy to my bookshelf when I can get my hands on one.
My rating is based on the enjoyment I felt whilst reading it!
Last thing… That ending?! How dare you leave me on a cliffhanger like that! I need Book 2 right now! Please :)

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy for this on kindle. This was my first ever so trying to be very honest in this review.
I completely forgot I signed up and honestly had no idea what I was getting into. It was the first Merlín retelling I’ve read. I did enjoy but not enough to re-read unfortunately but just because it’s a book that wasn’t fully my style.
The world building and character descriptions were perfect. Not too long, not too short and kept me interested in what world I was in. I love when a book explains completely where I am. I honestly feel that this world is somewhere out there in reality. I also felt I knew exactly what Merle (and her father as there’s a resemblance!) looked like which I love being able to picture.
I knew I would love Merle and Ren from the get go and loved their relationship growing throughout the book. The plot twists I had no idea were coming, were written in beautifully and made complete sense. Unlike some books i’ve read when they just appear and have no reason at all, this fitted in perfectly and made me audibly gasp at some points. The one at the end honestly made me shiver!
If you’re looking for your next Merlin retelling/fantasy, you’ve found it!!
Omg what a emotional rollercoaster, I had tears, laughter and feeling very supportive and even found myself rooting for Merle! If you love abit of King Arthur lit this book is very well written. I have talked with Gabby and as I started reading her book I had the impression that Gabby had lost someone very important in her life, and to find out she did she lost her dad not long ago. I have never been able to get a proper feeling about a author from there work. But Gabby hit it on the mail for me. I don’t want to put any spoilers in the as I ask you all to give this indie Author a chance! But one scene in her book reduced me to tears! If you know me and read this book you’ll know which part I’m on about! Thank you Gabby for letting me arc read for you it was a pleasure. Looking forward to the next book.
Another ARC read I just completed. I will be reading the second book as well!!
Highlights: 📚 Fantasy 📚 strong Female saves the day!! 📚 has a developing love story 📚 true friends 📚 magic
🌟 🌟🌟🌟 I’m giving it four ⭐️ because the build up of the ‘war’ was a lot getter than the actual scene was wrote out. I felt like it was over too quickly and too easy for this new found power our lead character acquired.
I was lucky enough to get an arc for this enjoyable book! If you like magic, Merlin and knights along with fairies this is the book for you! It was exciting to read and was able to read it in a day. The characters are likeable it has a good plot and it captivated me. Can’t wait for book 2!
Absolutely in love with this book. It’s so good, I love all the history behind King Arthur. I was excited and could not put the book down. I can’t not wait to read the rest of the series. Deserves more than five stars.
I really enjoyed this book! I think Gabby did a very good job with her first novel. I'll be honest - I initially thought the story was "meh", but, the more I read it, the more captivated I was, and, by the time I reached the final few pages, I was completely immersed - and wanted more!
The overall plot is interesting. I wasn't familiar with the story about Merlin and King Arthur, so it was fun to read a piece like this. I do find some parts written less well than the others - bland, repetitive expressions, predictable reactions, etc. I didn't feel the connection between the characters, didn't feel their emotions, so I couldn't live through the story together with them - which, again, somewhat changed as I kept on reading. I could guess some parts, some were nicely hinted at, and some completely cryptic. For some characters, I couldn't tell whether they were faking it (Asher and Ren) or were really with Merle. For others, like Shelby, I could tell right away they were the bad guys. I also wish some parts were more elaborated, like Merle's meetup with Merlin, the ending happened so quickly, unlike some previous parts that were significantly longer. Many descriptions of the same feelings, situations, events are what made them be so, I guess. Still, it was interesting for me to read those descriptions as I'm a non-native speaker, so I enjoyed listening to someone's mind as they go through life circumstances in such a way as Gabby used to describe Merle's. It was, at times, a bit too much, though, as I'm sure no one thinks so about everything in such a picturesque way, but, I guess it was necessary for us to comprehend and imagine, since it's how the book is conceptualized.
I think Merle's personality is a bit superficial and not quite developed in terms of her attitude and behavior. She's overreacting and exaggerating (which has nothing to do with her age) - and, since the story is told in the 1st person, we have a bit too much of her anger. And what's with her throat? On every page, there's a lump stuck or burning in her throat.
As far as her love with Ren is concerned, I couldn't picture it fully. I usually root for the leading couple to get together already, but, in this case, it went without saying, even though I didn't feel the spark between them. Their thoughts, the lines they exchanged between each other are somewhat cliché, which didn't work much for me. But I was so happy to see them finally kiss!
I'm aware I might be being a bit too judgmental, it's that I'm writing from various points of view. I definitely recommend the book, it's a nice read, and I'd not even limit it to young adults heh, it's a good way to relax and get your mind off things, whatever your age. :)
Overall, I enjoyed this story, and I’m looking forward to reading the next in the series. There were a few things that drew me out of the story, but it still was a good read.
I was drawn into this story immediately. The main mysteries of the book are introduced immediately, as is the main character, Merle. In general, I enjoy stories that involve discovery of magic in our world, revelation of unexpected birthright, and the development of supernatural abilities by normal people. This story, which contained all three, was well-written and engaging (there were a few grammatical errors, but not so many that it was too distracting). The story moved along at a good pace, with an enjoyable but not overwhelming amount of description and with realistic action sequences. Unfortunately, I can’t say much more about what I enjoyed without spoilers, so I’ll move on to the aspects that I didn’t enjoy as much.
I found Merle to be likeable and largely relatable, but it was a shock to realize that she was supposed to be in her early 20s. She would have been more believable as a late teen, somewhere in the 15- to 17-year-old range. It’s conceivable that the trauma she’s endured could have arrested her development and made her seem younger, but because she’s also capable and adaptable, she should be mature for her age rather than young for it. Honestly, I kept forgetting she was supposed to be an adult, and I enjoyed the story more when I thought of her as a teenager.
I also did not love the romantic relationship that develops in the book—largely because it doesn’t develop; it just appears. It wasn’t quite instalove, but it was too close to it for my taste. The instant physical attraction is understandable, and I appreciate that Merle acknowledges it and engages in some flirting without completely losing her head. Ren, on the other hand, seems so immediately devoted to Merle that I feel bad for her: I can’t help but think that he’s attracted to the idea of her and her position more than to Merle herself. I would have enjoyed the story more without the romantic element, or with a much more slowly developed one. Ren and Merle could have been great friends in this book, with a romantic relationship developing later.
Finally, I dislike
I received a free copy of this book with no obligation. I decided of my own free will to write this honest, unbiased review.
Please note: I have read the ARC copy. However, all the opinions and views are my own as any other review I make.
Very slight spoilers, please beware.
Rating 4.5 🌟 Plot twist: 5 🌟 Spiciness: 0 🌶
Let me start by saying that I absolutely loved this book! The world and character building was so interesting and I was hooked from the very first chapter. I have loved it so much that I have read it in less than 24 hours! 🙌
For me, this is an Arthur and the knights of the round table retelling, which is focused on Merlin and his heir, it is beautifully written and probably one of my favourite retelling/interpretations I have ever read. It gives me slight "Legendborn" vibes, but it's way more interesting than Legendborn in my opinion.
I really loved the jokes the author had put in some of the scenes, I even laughed out loud which doesn't happen that often when I read.
The author has done fabulously by including diverse characters, including a lgbtq characters & "women knights" which I haven't really seen in any other Arthur/Merlin retelling.
The book also touches on some important topics, such as bullying, loss of loved ones and trust issues.
It had many twists and turns I didn't expect and I wanted to read more and more to see what happens next.
Now about my dislikes - I didn't really dislike anything, however, I would have loved a little bit more of Ren & their love story, I felt like I needed something to happen and was frustrated when it didn't lol. If there has been a little more of them in the book, I would have given it 5 🌟.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book and I will definitely recommend it!!!
Many thanks to Gabby for sending me the ARC copy and I am literally buzzing for book 2!!!!
My favourite quotes from the book were:
"I could be pretty if I wasn't so tired and terrified all the time." - literally me in a nutshell lol
"Fate has a funny way of putting you exactly where you need to be."
‘Mysterious Shadows. Arthurian Legend. Dangerous Magic.’ If that tagline doesn’t make you want to read this book already, keep reading this review!
This book has magic, it has mystery, it has intrigue, it has found family and (my favourite) it has a tension-filled budding romance!
The book follows Merle (FMC) and her journey to discover what happened to her family and to find out what destiny awaits her. The story itself was a really interesting one, and although I felt it started a little slow, the world building and character set up had definitely paid off by the end. The main character backstory was fleshed out well so that I was emotionally invested in her well-being. I would have liked to see some other characters and their backstory more in depth to connect more with them as well (E.g. Ren and Loth), however I am sure this will happen in the second book! I really enjoyed the romance in the story and how it added to it rather than being the main focal point. I would like to see this further develop in book 2 and some of that building tension play out on the pages!
I loved the mix of historical fiction in a modern day setting. I thought the history of Merlin was woven really well into this story and gave you just enough that you understood what was going on, but you didn’t get bogged down in a history lesson. I really enjoyed the other heirs and how they all linked to Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table - such an interesting concept! I thought that the magic system and the interpretation of the Fae was really unique compared to a lot of other stories that I have read recently, and I even enjoyed the creepiness of the Fae (although I did have to stop reading a couple of times before bed, but then I’m a wimp 😂).
Overall, I’ve rated this book 4 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and cannot wait for the next book to come out! Thank you so much for allowing me to read and review an ARC of this book!
I loved the the set up Gabby led us through. She gave enough information to where I understood what was happening but not so much that it was overwhelming. There was detail, but I didn’t get stuck in it.
The fact Merlin and the Arthurian legend wasn’t fully re-told to us was great. I mean we all mostly know it by now, Gabby didn’t need to rehash it. Instead she played on the fact that it’s a legend and no one really knows the full truth.. not even the characters. We aren’t being given a new version of the age old story of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table. It felt like we were uncovering more of the story. I loved the added element of faeries.
I do agree with other reviewers and was surprised that the character was 21, she seemed more high school aged; in the way she talked, acted, no job, refers to hazel as the only responsible adult and that she herself isn’t a proper grown up. *I do believe the author is addressing this and aging down a couple characters*
I didn’t really connect with Ren tbh nor their relationship. It was a little insta-like; I wish there was more build up, more development between them. They needed more conversation getting to know each other, more moments. I also wish we learned more about him and the other characters. We learn a bit but I wanted to get to know the characters more. Maybe book 2 will see that happen.
I really enjoy Gabby’s writing style. It isn’t super flowery but nor is it basic. She paints a picture with her words that allowed me to visualize the scenes and people she was creating, easily.
For me, this book is a definite page turner. I found the story to be interesting and it kept me invested until the end. And that ending! Loved it. Can’t wait for book 2!
I received an e-ARC copy of this book in return for an honest review :-) SPOILERS AHEAD
First things first - I really enjoyed the concept of this book in it's entirety. I love the legend of King Athur, Merlin, and the Knights and really enjoyed Gabbys take on all of it.
I also loved a lot of the characters but sadly Merle and Ren didn't really hit the mark for me, and i'll talk a little about that soon.
I couldn't really tell what genre this book is supposed to fit into - fantasy, obviously, but for what age group? The characters and all of the interactions had between them, and a good chunk of the dialogue, felt very YA to me. However, because of the age of the characters, it can't really be YA in my opinion - but due to the things I mentioned before, i wouldn't say it's for adults either. If I had to stick it somewhere, it's awkwardly hanging between YA and NA and I feel as though Merle is the #1 reason for this.
Merle is our 20 year old protag, but despite being an adult she's got a pretty childish way of acting when it comes to Ren, despite showing she's a capable adult in most other situations, including life or death ones, which is the main reason I don't feel like I enjoyed her as a character.
Regarding Ren, I don't necessarily dislike him, I just feel like I don't know enough about him as a character to form a true opinion. Even though he's the main love interest, I don't really feel like him and Merle had enough "screen" time for me to actually care about their relationship and his character wasn't very fleshed out.
I did really love the part where Merle meets Merlin and comes back with these amazing powers, I'm an absolute sucker for when the MC gets what they've finally been searching for!
Overall, I did enjoy this book and will read any sequels!

As Gabby’s debut novel, I think she’s done a great job! I love stories involving Merlin, King Arthur and the knights of the round table.
At first, the start was a bit slow as we’re entering the MC Merle’s world. After the disappearance of her dad, she’s been seeing shadow like creatures and her mum’s health has deteriorated ever since. Her mum also sees these shadows and it’s suggested that it could be due to her mental health.
Merle has fond memories of her dad, especially making wishes in faery rings. She remembers them pricking their hands to offer blood to the faery in order to make their wish come true. Merle decides to revisit the faery ring on the 10th anniversary of her dad’s disappearance. She offers blood again and makes her wish. The earth rattles and changes. She flees thinking it’s nothing more than her imagination. What has she unlocked?
Merle doesn’t believe in magic, even when she’s attacked by this shadow like creature and is saved by Ren, who has been tasked to watch her. He is part of this secret society involving descendants of the Arthur and the knights of the round table. It is believed that Merle is a direct descendant of Merlin and possesses his magic. When her mum gets taken over by a faery nearly killing Merle, she somehow summons the magic to kill the faery instead and loses her mum in the process. It is then, she realises she needs to explore this secret society and figure out if all of it is true.
I felt like Merle had been challenged in her own thinking to accept something so foreign to her. It’d be a shock to anyone discovering magic is real and even more of a surprise if you were a direct descendant of someone so highly regarded. She’s thrust into this whole new world and secret society, so it’d be a lot to take in. Merle really had to prove herself. Although it is the modern world, people can still get stuck in tradition and doing something from a code, rather than adapting to current times - a challenge Merle overcame against the knights.
I thought the story was very well researched covering the legends surrounding Merlin etc. The pacing picked up when she started using her magic and I loved the action in the last few chapters. Merle’s interactions with Ren were cute and her friendships with Asher and Willow moving forward are going to be strong and fun. My favourite part was definitely the moment she entered the cave and got to see her dad again, before being whisked away to see Merlin. I didn’t guess the twist with Shelby - I only knew something was off with her. I love the characters and interested in reading the next book!

This book was so fun to read. Its about a young woman finding out that she is a descendent of Merlin the wizard. The FMC, Merle, has grown up sheltered and naïve with a father who has disappeared mysteriously and a mother having her own mental health crisis. When a handsome, young, stranger walks into her life, she starts to question her reality.
The author has received some critics for the age of her FMC, stating that she seemed younger and her actions were more juvenile in nature. While I can see why some readers would feel this way, I simply saw her as a very sheltered young woman from a small insular town in the country. Though I did find it a tad odd that she had never had a job at 21 years old.
Reading this book felt like Mortal Instruments set in the quiet English countryside. There were great action sequences and the relationships and comradery of Merle and her new companions felt believable. While I will say that she came around to her new life a little quicker than I would say is normal, she is shown as breaking down several times and clearly struggles with her situation. The book ends on a huge cliffhanger and I cannot wait for the next one!
I am usually not a fan of young adult books, but with a holiday in Cornwall and Tintagel only a few miles away, I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did so!
As a reader, you're sucked into the story right from the beginning. Merle and her worries are relatable, with her having too many responsibilities for her age and her constant search for answers about the disapperance of her father. I actually liked that she was reacting a bit (playfully) immature at the beginning, because that left enough room for her personal growth.
The love story between Merle and Ren does not take too much room, it's more in the background. I liked Ren, who was mysterious enough and still believable.
What I loved most about the book was the pacing, which was very well done with the constantly rising suspense and bits of slowing down when neccessary, and the twist at the end, which was even better.
The Arthurian legend is woven in with great skill, and at the same time this story is completely original, which makes it a joy to read for those who like me, feel drawn to it because of the legend, but also for those readers who don't know the historical/mythical background.
You're an heir of Merlin. You have a duty to protect the Pendragons. Like I do. And que my fangirling because damn I love me some good Arthur and Merlin stories.
Amazing book, loved every bit of it. 4.5 stars!
If you are like me and love stuff off legends and especially the legend of king Arthur, his knights of the round table and Merlin ... This is the book for you.
This story is a modern day Arthurian 'retelling'. With an array of amazing characters, betrayel, friendship, destiny and magic. The worldbuilding was perfect. A book you won't be able to put down once you start.
After losing her father, Merle must leave behind the world she knows to enter this society of knights and magic to protect the world from fairies ... Apparently seeing fairies is not a good thing over here. Who knew, certainly not Merle when she was a little girl who made a wish to be able to see them.
This book won't dissapoint. The great relationships, the quest and challenges Merle is facing make for an interesting and compelling story. Is there going to be a book 2 because I just can't get enough of this world, these characters, this story.
I received an ebook arc copy in exchange for my honest review.
I was really excited to read this book and it did not disappoint!
Firstly, I was hooked from page one! The story is beautifully written, the characters are very well built and the plot really grabs your attention making you want to keep reading.
In my opinion, Merle's character development was one of the strong points of the book because she started out has a little immature, but in the end she was very strong minded and she really fought for herself and her friends. She lost so much, but yet she managed to create her own family and find happiness in the friends that she kept making along the way.
The relationship between Merle and Ren was also really cute and to be honest, I loved that it wasn't rushed and things were left to happen naturally.
The end of the book was incredible, now I can't wait for the next one to come out!! Congratulations Gabby on your debut book, it was phenomenal and I'm sure it is going to be a huge success!!

I was lucky enough to be one of the readers who received an ARC of this book.
Gabby created a wonderful world with ties to Arthurian histories and lore, bringing up different stories that had been passed around for generations and not just the ones that are the most mainstream and well-known. Gabby did an excellent job of weaving an interesting tale about the lore mixed with modern day. Merle is fairly relatable main character, thrust into a new world that completely changes how she thinks about the world around her. Things that made her question her own sanity, as well as the sanity of her mother, and wonder what really happened ten years prior to her father that went missing. Merle starts learning more and more about who she is, what really happened and who her real friends are. It's a great novel with a wonderfully built world and a plot that keeps readers guessing while leaving little details here and there that could potentially lead readers to guess the ending if they pay close enough attention to the smallest of details.
Wow! This debut novel has it all. There’s adventure, there’s medievil history, there’s romance, there’s love and loss, found family, fae, magic and more! I was captured from the very beginning and the story pulled me along. It was engaging, fast paced and I found myself wanting more and more. I could not put it down!
Gabby’s writing style is enchanting and captivating, and it’s clear a lot of research has gone into this Merlin retelling.
The main FMC, Merle, is strong and sassy and badass, you can’t help but root for her. The twins, Lore and Lux are so loveable and sweet. I loved the tension between Merle and Ren, one of the knights, and their slow burn romance was done to perfection! I can’t wait to learn more about Ren as their relationship grows…I hope we get to see more of his background.
I cannot wait to see what happens next and I will definitely be buying all the books in this series! This was a brilliant debut novel!
Wow what a debut! This was a beautifully written fantasy book and I really enjoyed it! I oove everything to do with King Arthur, Merlin and the knights of the round table. So it was really a no brainer to sign up for an ARC!
It was fast paced and you really get the feeling of ”just one more chapter” ”okay, ooone more” and then you have finished the book and it’s 2 in the morning and you have to get up for work in 4 hours! You know the feeling guys.
It’s a YA fantasy and I really think this book will be enjoyed from the age of 13 to 98. A perfect book if you want to start reading fantasy and don’t want to get started with the thick 8-900 page tomes that a lot of fantasy books are. The magic system is also easy enough to understand and things makes sense!
If you still have doubts, do you like found family? Witty banter? Awesome female protagonists, that kick all the male butts? Just read it. You will not regret it.
Thank you to the author Gabby Skeldon for allowing me to have an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
"Found" is a 3.5 stars star read for me. (Rounded up) It's the only book I've ever come across where I just don't know where to put it, because I feel like the problems I had in the first 70% of the book were mostly resolved by the last 30%. The end of the book is where "Found" shines. With that being said- onto the review!
Things I liked: First of all- the cover is beautiful. The story concept is solid. Female MC who discovers she has magic, a found family trope, and just sprinkle on some "dead parents" trauma and you're good to go. It's not a new concept- BUT IT WORKS. I loved Asher and Lore, they were the best developed characters. I loved the ending- the way she got her magic, the open ending with Lore, the hookup of Merle and Ren... Everything from the point where Merle is introduced to the knights was good.
**As far as the open and (kind of abrupt) ending goes, I liked it! A lot of people don't, and I get why, but I love the moment where I want another chapter. It's a clever set up for book 2; leave them wanting more. I'm invested in this book far more than I would have been because of the open ending.
Things I didn't like so much: Merle was an immature and underdeveloped character for the majority of the book. I had to read her like she was 15 for the majority of the book- honestly I thought (until the end with her and Ren) that it should be marketed as a middle grade book. There were too many forgettable and unnecessary characters at the beginning. It was tough to keep reading "Merle we have to have a big conversation later" over and over via Aunt Hazel. It almost felt like the entire first half of the book was an afterthought in the sense that the author knew where she wanted the book to end, but struggled setting it up. It's not as cohesive of a story as I would have liked.
Final takeaways: This is a debut author who has massive potential for storytelling. The fact that she wrote a book, in itself, is an accomplishment. It's not a perfect book by any means, there were a lot of places where I really struggled as a reader to get invested. However, I think it really came together there at the end, and I was unable to put the book down until the last page.
Will I be reading book 2? Yes. I think the way it's set up, book 2 has a ton of potential.

Found is an Arthurian retelling. The story focuses on Merle, a girl who is a bit of a loner, who finds out she’s the descendant of Merlin. But magic doesn’t exist, right? Suddenly, her life takes on more meaning and purpose as she realizes what, and who, she’s fighting for.
Merle is a strong-willed FMC, who cares deeply for others. Despite what she’s had to endure in life, she still has hope for the future. Seeing her relationship blossom with Ren was nice, as he so patiently waited for her to join the Templar after explaining what it meant to be Merlin’s heir. The supporting characters are fantastic, and I feel the book did a good job of character development, as we got to really know them well.
This is first in a series and a great read for those looking for a unique YA fantasy retelling. I look forward to the second book in the series!
Special thanks to the author for the ARC. All thoughts in this review are honest and my own.
Found: Merlin's Heir is a fantasy retelling of the Arthurian legend by Gabby Skeldon.
The story follows Merle who is dealing with the disappearance of her father and the possible madness of her mother. Merle and her mother are able to see creatures they call the Shadows. One day, Ren, a boy in town she has never seen before, enters her life and introduces her to a world based on Arthurian legend.
There are many aspects of this book I enjoyed. One aspect I liked is Merle as the main character. Merle is a strong, determined character who cares so much about the people in her life. She acted younger than her age at times, but she was a great character I want to see grow into her power and live up to being Merlin's heir.
Skeldon's use of descriptive language enhances the world-building, which allowed me to immerse myself in the story. I also loved the details of the characters and the diversity of the Knights.
The budding romance between Ren and Merle was cute and filled with tension. I liked how the element of romance did not become the main plot of the story. I believe this will add more intensity to their relationship and allow their feelings toward each other to grow stronger as the series continues.
This book is for readers who love the Arthurian legend, fantasy with a romantic subplot, and magic.
Found: Merlin's Heir was amazing! This book is a 5/5 stars for me. I am excited for the next book in the series and will definitely be reading it!

This read had my attention from the start. It has a great blend of lore, history, and magic, giving a take on the Arthurian legend as well as what came after. The family lines intrigued me--showing how traditions shape (be it good or bad) how families are run. Family also isn't just by blood in this, where the theme of "found" family is lovely and naturally progresses. I love the balance between subtle emotions to being completely overwhelmed by what one is feeling--the authenticness of it is spot on being that it doesn't feel forced. What Merle is feeling is justified and completely okay--she should be feeling a lot! I was wondering how the end was going to wrap up, thinking it was mostly wrapped up (and then wondering what would inspire a continued story), and then BAM! The cliffhanger ... I cannot wait to read book two. Plus, I want more of Ren.
