Both healer and warrior, nothing will stop Lady Aubrianne from protecting the people she loves. Together with her closest friends, she labors to find the reason behind her nefarious husband’s frequent absences. They fear the worst and race against time to avoid being implicated in his treacherous acts.
Larkin, a Royal Guard of Aurelia and second-born noble son, tires of his rakish ways. He craves adventure and jumps at the chance to investigate the increasingly wealthy Lord Roger and his dealings with a rival realm. In Aurelia, there’s only one punishment for treason: death to all involved—including the woman who has haunted his dreams for years.

Wild Lavender: The Aurelian Guard is the debut novel from Nicole Elizabeth Kelleher, and I have to say that I am quite impressed with her work. I am also very happy that she has chosen the fantasy romance genre because there is just not enough of it out there! I am always scrounging for new books in this genre, but they are few and far between.
The setting for this book is the Kingdom of Aurelia, a map of which is provided at the front of the book. It was too small to read on my Kindle app, so I can't offer much by way of description. I can tell you that Aurelia is governed by a sole king, but it has various realms within the kingdom which of course have a responsible lord. It kinda reminded me of Game of Thrones the way the kingdom was set up... but the landscapes seemed more friendly and prosperous than the cold and dreary as Westeros.
Our heroine, Aubrianne "Anna" is of Chevring. Her land and family are known for breeding Chevring war horses which I pictured as the beautiful medieval destriers prancing like a Clydesdale. While we meet Anna when she is only 16, that is in a quick prologue where she has a brief interlude with the future hero, then we jump ahead to Anna at 18 just after she has married Lord Roger of Stolweg. Unbeknownst to Anna as she is riding to her new home, this will be a horrible marriage for her and you are going to experience much of it right along with her. I really admired Anna, she is the definition of a survivor. She had to endure horrible treatment from her husband, but she stayed strong to help her friends, family and the people of Stolweg. I loved that she inspired loyalty from the people who watched her dignified suffering knowing that one day she would save them all.
The hero of this first book is Larkin, nephew to the Queen by way of the Queen's half sister. (Side note: I do believe each book will follow a different couple.) Lark is a member of the Royal Guard, and a bit of a cad and ladies' man playing among the Queen's ladies at court. While he and Anna met at the beginning of the book, they are not going to meet up again for a very long time. Seriously - years pass. You will wonder if they are ever going to get together. But once they do get together, it was great. They did go through a tumultuous period which I still don't really get... but they both got past their stubborn selves on the way to their HEA. I liked Larkin, but he was really overshadowed by Anna for me. She is this great warrior come again, totally selfless and protector of her people. While I liked them as a couple - I don't think his character was on equal footing with hers. And that is totally fine and it worked for the story.
This book reminded of what I love and hate about fantasy romance. I both love and hate that the story moves at a slower pace. I love all the descriptions and detail, but I also want to find out what happens. So sometimes I feel like I am rushing toward the end... but then I slow down when I get there. The only thing that I really found lacking for my taste is the fantasy aspect. It was a nice story set in a made up kingdom... but I would have loved to see some fantastical creatures, or magical powers, or even more of the mysticism associated with Anna's ancestral line of female warriors. The closest we got was Anna's horse, Tullian, who was given a personality of his own. Now if he could only talk... or fly... lol.
I received an advanced copy of this book from Diversion Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I am looking forward to more lively fantasy from this author in the future. 4 stars / 3 flames.
To be quite frank, I actually bought this book because of the cover - a beautiful horse, but let me add that not only was the cover gorgeous, but the story captured me right from the start. If you like strong heroines who can overcome unimaginable horrors, than Lady Anna of Chevring is one of the most fabulous heroines you will ever encounter.
WILD LAVENDER is a sweeping historical romance combining all the things I love, an unbelievable heroine, fabulous secondary characters, amazing destrier horses, and an amazing love story. Add into that mix a reprehensible villain who tops out at one of the nastiest I have ever come across. Author Kelleher has with this debut book become a favorite author whom I will be looking forward to hearing more from and will definitely be looking to follow her Aurelian Guard series.
The prologue actually threw me off into thinking that it would simply be a girl meets boy and eventually they meet years later to fall in love and live that happily ever after. In a nutshell, yes it is similar but wow, the story told is so much more heady than a simple romance. I loved every minute and found this to be so very hard to put down, even resorting to sneaking peeks of the story while attending a boring seminar! That’s never happened to me before. I will be so waiting for the next book in this series. The writing, the plotting - AMAZING! Very Highly Recommended!!!
Aubrianne "Anna" was given an arranged marriage with Lord Roger but his cruelty once they married was horrific. She could have cowered and survived, but she is a woman with a plan. Gaining the trust of others around her she vows to protect them even as Lord Roger of Stolweg does his best to break her.
Larkin, is the nephew of the Queen. He is a man who enjoys women but does not want the entanglement then a night in bed. As questions begin to arise about Lord Roger and his leadership is questioned everything changes and when he meets Anna his life takes a turn he was not expecting.
This was really good. I thought it was unpredictable and was really impressed with Anna's character. Really well written had a little bit of everything I would expect from a book like this. Definitely reading the next chapter.
Even with an interesting backdrop, the story was weak, and unfortunately much of the language was clunky and awkward. Some examples still reverberate in my mind, and I finished the book two days ago. Much was made of the almost-mythical warrior woman attributes of the main character Aubrianne/Anna, but very little was used of it, overall. Additionally, the semi-mythical status of the famous war horses raised by her family, again unrealized. An editor to excise some of the meaningless/mundane details would have also been helpful. I wanted to like this book, but overall found it disappointing.
Note: explicit sex and sexual violence included, consider this a trigger warning, in the case of the latter.
WILD LAVENDER is the first book in The Aurelian Guard series, and is also the debut novel by this author. We are transported to a medieval world, where things aren't always equal or what they seem.
I found this book to be a strong opening to this series. We not only have strong characters on both sides of the conflict, but the world-building is there without overpowering the story. The romance comes later, after a horrific start for Anna. She surely deserves all the love she can get!
With no errors that I noticed, I loved this fantasy world, and I can't wait to read more. Absolutely recommended by me.
I don't usually read Medieval stories. It just seems that everyone wants to kill each other. Nicole has worked hard on her story. She has come up with some strong characters-women allowed. Anna is married to Roger and not at all what she expected. She spends more time with her beloved horses. Someone is looking like they are a traitor so Larkin is trying to help. If you like lots of graphical reads then this is your story. For me this is a mature read. I hope you choose to try this book. Enjoy your reading! I have this book for an honest review for NetGalley.
A story about an incredibly resourceful, intelligent and selfless FMC. Dealt with a deck of absolute horrendous cards in life, Anna faces her husband’s relentless cruelty with courage and quiet defiance. The downfall of this fantasy historical romance book? The romance.
First, the great parts of the story. There’s an abundance of scenes of Anna taking action which ultimately contributes to the downfall of Roger and protection of herself, her people and her family:
> Marking the door to make sound when someone enters >Decrypting the tapestry and discovering a secret passage to Roger’s bedroom and an escape route (and also wedging the entrances open before she goes in exploring!) >Deducing that Cellach introduces himself as loyal to his position instead of his master >Realising that Roger issues his commands in the enemy’s tongue as an indication of his treason
There isn’t a hint of helplessness to be observed in Anna, but at the same time it’s heartbreaking because that bravery is largely a facade to protect others. It felt cathartic to see Anna ‘lose it’ after news of her family, knowing just how much she bottled up so no one she loved would be hurt.
I appreciated an FMC that says she can fight and CAN actually fight! The below passage about Anna’s powerful female ancestors gave me a bit of a chill, it felt like a montage was playing in my mind:
“Her studies began with the history of the women in her line—ancestors who, in times of peace, were singled out to be healers; in times of unrest, warriors; and on the rarest of times, called to be both.”
Anna is also RUTHLESS. While I am slightly saddened that she didn’t get her well deserved revenge on Roger, having her friends take justice into their own hands didn’t make me upset. While Anna suffered at Roger’s hand for 3 years, her friends suffered for many years longer. Anna got her vengeance though, on Gorman. To tear a bloodied piece off Gorman’s tunic and let Roger’s feral dog sniff it before issuing a kill command - it was violent and it was vengeance. There was also that single minded determination to carry through the wild plan of sabotage on 10 weapons of destruction on her own (and succeeding). I pictured Arya Stark’s fluid attacks in GoT when Anna slit the throat of the soldier.
There is an abundance of found family loveliness in this book. The circle of conspirators is built upon trust and respect, and it’s great to see how loyalty was established between the people of Stolweg and Anna. We see Anna’s kindness shine through when she tells Will to gift their harvested apples to Doreen, Will’s mother. Anna takes no credit for the act despite Grainne and Doreen knowing, but Anna continues to provide gifts of harvested fruits to Doreen with the help of Will for no other reason that to make Doreen happy. We also see Anna take a stand against Roger whenever she has the opportunity to do so (healing Giles’ wound, coming up with a plan to save a pregnant Stolweg woman that she doesn’t know, taking a whip to save Will) and in return we see the same protection repaid in kind to Anna (when Larkin observes that multiple people immediately jump to Anna’s defence anytime someone poses a threat to Anna, Grainne overcoming her great fear of horses so that she could get to Anna ASAP and deliver news of her family so that it came from a friend, and of course the whole limp dick salve). Cellach, Giles, Will, Doreen and Grainne are fantastic side characters. They don’t just exist to further Anna’s story, but are all actively involved in the takedown of Roger.
The romance arch doesn’t really pick up until after the 50% mark. It’s fated romance so there is some element of magic and fantasy weaved into the plot. There is insta-lust and insta-love as is standard for fated love. They fuck pretty much immediately, and I honestly would’ve preferred a bit more slow burn? Maybe have Larkin observe and admire the strength and kindness displayed by Anna, and then building up that tension. I don’t feel particularly invested in their relationship despite this being a romance because it just felt very lust driven. They have sex in every scene together after reuniting.
Larkin eventually devolved into a controlling overly protective lover archetype:
“Stay in your chamber with the door barred whenever we are forced to part,” he suggested. “If I could, I would lock you away where nothing could threaten you.”
Didn’t we already establish that Anna is fated to be a legendary warrior? That her warrior ancestors did not perish even after winning wars? Has Anna not already proven that she is capable of protecting herself? I had hoped Larkin would be the supportive boyfriend. The ‘I will always fight alongside you, but never stop you from fighting’ type of man. All I’ve seen at 80% is him throwing hissy fits whenever Anna refuses to be a damsel in distress and also relentlessly try to stifle her courage. What kind of bullshit manipulative tactic is storming out of the room and waiting for Anna to come to HIM to talk when HE was the transgressor?
And I don’t even want to think about Cellach. CELLACH WAS PINING? He accepted Anna’s rejection almost immediately, knowing he could never have her heart. But does he storm off in a fit of rage? No. He warns Larkin that he is only deserving of Anna if he can accept her true self. He is gentle and protective over the Chevlain children he finds, effortlessly gaining their trust and leading them all back to safety. He proudly helps Anna with her armour. He freely transforms Tullian into a warhose. Cellach is nothing but a walking green flag.
There are very short chapters throughout the book. The pacing is fast without scrubbing over any necessary details. Good book for someone with a short attention span and if you’re in the mood for a story that moves along (no filler chapters).
But alas, DNF at 89% and wish that Anna and Cellach were endgame. Larkin can go sulk somewhere else.

Wild Lavender is the first book in the Heart & Hand series by Nicole E. Kelleher. It is a captivating historical fantasy romance with plenty of action, adventure, danger, violence, challenges, duty, murder, chemistry, steam, high stakes, prophecy, politics, agendas, and a touch of fate. This turned out to be quite an angsty adventure that pulled me in and kept me engaged the whole way through. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Happy Reading…
I read the older version due to the library only had that edition (I missed the KU borrow opportunity of updated edition). Whew some things Roger did to Anna! Definitely not a light fantasy read which isn't a bad thing for me. I like the change up. Anyways I see the potential in these stories and I'm interested in to see how the next one plays out (which is the updated version of that edition of book 2).
How was the author’s writing: Great: Is there violence: Graphic Violence: Is there sexual content: Some sexual content: How was the story narrated: first person: 5 stars Wild Lavender, The Aurelian Guard, written by Nicole Elizabeth Kelleher. The people of Stolweg feared Lord Roger and He wanted it that way. He had a plan and had taken great risks to see it thru. Lady Aubrianne, Anna to her family, is an enchanting character. Her life has been spent with the most beautiful and strongest destrier horses known in the kingdom. She is a very accomplished horse woman. Lord Roger of Stolweg is her betrothed, a deal struck between Lord Roger and her father, to relieve the crushing debt Chevring had been under in times of peace. Not many war horses were needed during this time. So Anna sets of to go to her betrothed. The marriage will take place at Stolweg. Lord Roger is kind on the journey, if aloof. Anna can not make out his character. Though she does try, he seems to be a hard man to know. After they are married, she finds out what kind of man he truly is. He is cruel to his people and even more cruel to Anna. She is stuck. The vows have been made and consummated, if that is what you can call what Lord Roger does to her. Anna does her best to care for the people of Stolweg. They industry in her a kind mistress and a wonderful medicine woman. She gets on the best she can and cares for the horses she has brought and bred. She gives her husband a wide berth.
Someone from Anna's past is coming to see Lord Roger, though none of them know It yet. Lord Roger holds a secret that no one would have guessed. But Anna has a secret of her own. A lineage thought long gone.
I was astonished to find that this book is a debut. The writing was so well done that I was sure to find other books previously published to add to my collection. I enjoyed the relationships between Anna and her staff. Though she didn't treat them like staff. More like family. Lord Roger was very easy to loathe. And the hero was truly that. A perfect man, with his flaws, but exactly what a good heroine needs! I absolutely will look for the next book by this author! Her turn of phrase speaks of a highly engaged author. I Cann only imagine how wonderful the next book will be! *I received a courtesy of this title*
his historical fantasy is amazing, a real treat, it caught my attention from the first page. The kingdom of Aurelia is really fascinating and well developed, descriptions of landscapes and rich in detail, it is easy to imagine yourself there. Anna had always dreamed of a romantic marriage, even when parents combine her wedding still hopes to have married her great love. But her husband Roger is a traditional man, very attentive to formalities, not at all romantic. After she discovers that he is indeed a cruel and unscrupulous man. Her life in the new castle is very sad and the only consolation is her beloved horses. And the memory of a guy she had met in her palace and in a few minutes he had won her hearts. All the characters are well characterized and incredible. Anna is a great heroine. She is stubborn, independent, rebellious, brave, smart with a big heart. Lark is a royal guard, in love with his queen. He's a brave knight, honest and fair The plot is intriguing, exciting, full of mysteries, twists. Keeps you glued to the pages and you really can't put it down. Great debut for this author and this new series, I can't to reading the next book. I recommend it to those who love historical fantasy
TW: Rape/Domestic Violence. The first instalment of Nicole E. Kelleher’s Heart & Hand series, Wild Lavender, follows Anna who is married to Lord Roger but secretly in love with a man she had a moment with years prior, Larkin. The story focuses on Anna’s point of view but offers a few other perspectives as well. It is mainly Anna’s story focused on action, with her meeting Larkin again at the halfway point of the story. Anna is a strong main character and her relationship with Larkin has a level of understanding that you don’t always see in romance books. My favourite character was Anna and my least favourite character was Roger. I recommend this book because it has a slow start but a really interesting second half, a strong female lead, and a romance to root for. I also like the map of the fantasy world! “Neither of you should change for the other. Bend, yes. But not change. Besides, nothing is ever hopeless where love is concerned.”
Terrific book! Lady Chevring is such a strong medieval heroine...the perfect combination of strength and vulnerability. I miss the characters now that I've finished reading it.
I really enjoyed this book, the characters are amazing and the drama and suspense had me glued to my e-reader. Anna is amazing, so strong. I am looking forward to reading more in the series.
Lady Aubrianne is a young lady who is no stranger to duty, but her upbringing was full of love and honour, so when she is married to a wealthy Lord, she is hoping for the same thing, however, he seems to be quite upright and polite in all of their interactions and when they are wed, however, on their travels to his home, there is no passion, unlike her only taste from when she was younger. Larkin is a young man who is the second son of a wealthy family and so has the freedom to do whatever he wishes, including playing games with the ladies within his families court, however, one encounter changes things for him and although he never saw the woman again and didn’t have chance to even giver his name, it is something he has never forgotten.
As soon as Lady Aubrianne enters her husbands keep, she has a feeling that something isn’t quite right, it is too quiet and there is nobody to welcome her, but she still does not let that bother her when she is shown to her room and asked to prepare for her husband to visit her once she has freshened up, but her experience is not one of a love filled marriage, it is not what she prepared herself for and nothing like her imaginations, but she has some support from her lady in waiting, even if it starts off as distant. As the time passes and a routine is established, Lady Aubrianne begins to befriend the servants, especially while her husband is away, which he frequently is and this is where she finds out what struck her when she arrived and she is determined to help those around her, so she uses her unconventional upbringing to her advantage, especially when her talents as a healer are needed and this continues, albeit in a more secretive manner when his lordship is around.
Larkin is up to his old tricks and competing with his best friend at the same time, but his mystery lady is always at the back of his mind, however, when he is given the chance to investigate a certain Lord Roger due to some suspicions of treason and misuse of his prosperity, the last thing he expects is to see his mystery women living with him as his wife, but not as surprised as Lady Aubrianne is to see him. As Larkin’s investigations continue, Lady Aubrianne is doing her own investigating as to what her husband has been doing on his trips, mainly so she can stop him before she is drawn even deeper into his plans, so when she is confronted by Larkin about her complicity, she agrees to help him, but only if he helps her in return. As the two become closer, can they work out what Lord Roger is doing and who is also complicit in his machinations, or will they find themselves in deep trouble and dangerous waters? This is an action packed fantasy adventure which spans countries and kingdoms to bring justice to those doing wrong with a romantic undertone which will leave you wanting more as you read along to its conclusion.
I just finished this book and let me tell you that I didn't want to put it down! Of course I had to many, many times for normal life stuff, but every free chance I got, I grabbed it to read a little more. One chapter at a time I slowly finished it. Not because it was slow going, but because I was just crazy busy this week! If I had the time I'm sure I would have finished it within a day or two. Aubrianne (aka Anna) isn't prepared for her marriage to Lord Roger of Stolweg. The fantasy of a loving home and husband is dashed away as soon as they arrive at the Keep. He's so cruel to everyone when he's home and frequently gone to unknown places otherwise. He's hiding something and she and her new found friends (the servants that keep Stolweg running) fear him and his plans. She knows that her life will be coming to an end soon, just like his first wife. Roger only had two uses for her. Breeding horses and providing him with an heir. She starts a breeding program that flourishes, but providing an heir not so much. When the stable boy is tied to a post for lashes, Anna jumps in and takes his lashes for herself, not realizing that she fuels Roger's sadist's desires more. He becomes increasingly ugly and sadistic to her and she has the scares to prove it. Uncovering what he is up to and killing him before he kills her are her focus. When the Royal Guard show up unannounced to look into her husband and his dealings with forbidden realms, she fears she may have missed her chance. Larkin, one of the guards there to investigate Lord Roger, realizes that he knows Anna from years before. He caught her sneaking about court and he's never been able to forget her since. Unfortunately for her, if her husband is punished for the treason they suspect, she could very well be implicated and put to death as well. Larkin's gut tells him more is happening at the Keep, but how can he prove it? It's a race to figure out what Roger is up to and stop him before it's to late. Lord Roger or the King himself will be the end of Anna if she's not careful. This book will have you on your toes! Trust me, it is that good! I was sad for Anna, but also wished the best for her and all the Keep's people. Well, not Roger and some of his men, but the rest of them! I can not wait to read more of this series!! If you like epic fantasies, hot romances, murder, secret passages, love and war, and of course horses you will fall in love with this book too!
Aubrianne has recently wed Lord Roger in a marriage arranged by her parents. She knows little about this man but feels that in time that she can grow to love him. Aubrianne is determined to make the most of their marriage and be a good wife. However, married life turns out to be anything but bliss and Lord Roger only has coldness in his heart. He turns out to be cruel and is violent not only towards his wife but to his servants and help as well.
Aubrianne is a fighter, and she is determined to not allow Lord Roger to break her. Along with a small group of servants, who have become her closest friends, they set out to find out why Lord Roger is frequently gone for weeks at a time. They suspect treachery and want to stop it before they become implicated in his treacherous acts.
Unbeknownst to them Lord Roger is being investigated by the Royal Guard of Aurelia. Larkin, a member of the Royal Guard, met Aubrianne by chance years earlier and has not been able to stop thinking about her. He is eager to set out on new adventures and investigate the dealings of Lord Roger and see Aubrianne again. However, if she is implicated in Lord Roger’s treacherous acts she will be faced with the same punishment as Lord Roger. Death will the punishment for all those involved.
This book was beautifully written, and it was easy to become immersed in the story as it unfolded. You could feel yourself being swept back in time and see yourself in each scene. You could feel yourself bounce along on the back of the horse and hear the clip clopping of the horse’s hooves as they traveled along on the roads through ancient forests. You could feel the pain Lord Roger inflicted on Aubrianne and doled out to his servants. The characters, whether you loved them or hated them, were wonderful. Aubrianne is a woman to be admired for her strength and courage to get through the horrific abuse that she endured. Lord Roger is a cruel, cold, and heartless man that deserved to receive the same treatment that he dished out so easily to others. Larkin was kind, sweet, and patient and easy to find yourself drawn to. Wild Lavender is a historical romance that is packed full of action, suspense, mystery, intrigue, murder, and romance. A must read!
Wild Lavender is the first book in the Heart & Hand Series by Nicole E. Kelleher. This is a medieval historical romance. It took me a about a third of the way through to actually capture my attention, the pace goes from very slow to extremely fast. The beginning is not bad, it just is very slow, and you MUST pay attention to every detail as Nicole E. Kelleher drops small hints throughout the book, which I loved, but just wished the pace was consistent throughout. At times it felt like there was a good bit of filler information.
This book is full of castles, secret passages, war, betrayal, strong heroin, and arranged marriage. Anna is such a headstrong and brave young woman, her idea of a blissful marriage is quickly shattered when she realizes her husband is a cruel, sadistic, hateful and abusive man. Lord Roger hides behind a mask, he can be charming and alluring. Anna, with the assistance of several people want to get rid of Roger, but he is two steps ahead of them - Roger ordered that if he is to die, that not only is his Captain supposed to kill Anna, but they are also supposed to kill her entire family and harm her hometown, Chevlain.
Lord Roger is up to something, but they cannot prove it. Larkin and two other men from the Royal Guard show up in Stolweg to try to uncover any wrong doings by Lord Roger. When he arrives, he is stunned to see the woman who has haunted his dreams for years. if Lord Roger is proven to be guilty, Anna may be implicated as well since she is his wife.
By the end of the book, it was a captivating romance with plenty of action, violence, prophecy, and challenges. The book really starts progressing when Anna decides to save herself and her people from the sadistic Lord Roger. I recommend reading this book if you love medieval fantasy romance! I cannot wait to read book 2. PLEASE CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR THIS BOOK!
Nicole Kelleher ‘s Wild Lavender is a second chance romance set in medieval times when women were often considered property, Anna had run into Larkin one night years ago- both held that moment in their thoughts. Larkin wanted to see her again but nobody knew Anna. In court her formal name of Aubrianne was used.
Anna was part of an arranged marriage to Roger of Stolweg. As part of her dowry, was her knowledge of Chevlain horses. However, Anna’s fairy tale marriage thoughts come crashing down when Roger was forceful with taking her maidenhood. His abuse didn’t all fall upon Anna, as he often targeted his servants too. When the stableboy,Will, was tied to a post for 15 lashes, Anna intervened and took 9 lashes in his place. Grainne, her lady’s maid, helped Anna with teas that would prevent pregnancy, healing balms and sleep aids preventing Roger from physically harming her. However, the beatings continue and Anna plans to escape after killing Roger.
Meanwhile, Roger has garnered attention from the Royal Guard. Larkin believes the appearance of Chevlain Destriers at Stolweg was part of an elaborate plan against King Godwin. Therefore, Larkin joins Captain Baldric, Warin, Trian, Tomas, and Ailwen as they ride to Stolweg to determine if Roger will be charged with treason and murder,
The perspective of this story is told from multiple well-developed characters. The journeys of each group are written in detail. This made it easy to envision the surroundings. The flow of the story was easy to follow. However, I think the constant turmoil between Larkin and Anna was somewhat tedious. I would happily rate Wild Lavender 4 stars.
Wild Lavender by Nicole E. Kelleher is a fated romance based in medieval times. There are different character views throughout the chapters that dip into that character emotions and thoughts. You will dive into the world that Lady Aubrianne and Larkin have created for themselves in different areas of there country without ever meeting one another. This story does execute this time eras specific requirements/expectations for lords and ladies, so if there are things you don’t agree with then this is not the book for you. It is a forced proximity but arranged marriages were normal for this era.
Dive into the world where fate is simply just what it is… Two people meet under different circumstances and are to never see one another again, then with the women who read the stars where the elders created the runes to only find out that they are destined. What will Anna and Lark who don’t know each other able to work together to prevent war?
This story is devastating and beautiful, with a strong female character who’s destined to change the world. It was truly magnificent how Nicole was able to write such a moving story for what Lady Aubrianne had endured. It shows that people can still come together in the most horrific circumstances and still be genuinely good. I loved this tale, and it was the first one I’ve ever read from this specific genre and era. Nicole did a great job executing characters and world building. Strongly recommend this book. Overall 5 stars.
Lady Aubrianne is betrothed to Lord Roger as a payback for an old debt from her family. Once she is married its not the happily ever after she accepted, her new husband is cold and not a nice man, but as time goes on she decides to be the focal point of their people but when someone from her past comes into there town she does not know how to process this.
Larkin has been sent to uncover any wrong doings with Lord Roger, but when he enters the palace and sees the woman he has dreamed about ever since the first look he can't believe it. So when his investigations may led to Anna he confronts her which upsets her and then they become allies trying to find out the real dealings behind Lord Roger.
This is not my normal genre I read and sometimes there is a book which surprises you which is always brilliant to find, this book was one of those nuggets. The story was well written and flowed with the drive of the story and the main characters held your attention while I devoured this book.
The character of Anna was such a strong character and was a great for the passion within the story and the character of Larkin was a brilliant compliment to the character of Anna and there forbidden love angst was great and also heart-breaking. I loved the secondary characters in the book and added an extra layer to this complex story.
As this is the first book I have read by this author, I would love to read the next book in this series and maybe I have found a new genre to read.
This is the first book in the Heart & Hand Series. I really enjoyed being transported in time with this read. The author writing was captivating and really enveloped the reader in the world they had created. This is a historical fantasy romance but it is full of action and adventure as well which make its different from a typical historical romance. There is danger, secrets and betrayal as well as a romance between 2 people who meet by accident but never forgot each other. Anna has been married to Roger. However her marriage isn't what she was expecting and when Roger goes missing for long periods of time she enjoys the peace. But things arent what Roger leads her to believe. He has a plan, a plan that would make him and everyone associated with him a traitor including Anna. Larkin has been made aware of a traitor in their mists so he sets out to find and rid the kingdom of this traitor and their supporters. So imagine his surprise that when on his search he finds the woman that has never left his mind. Can it be true that she is part of this and being a traitor also or is she just an innocent pawn in a much bigger game her husband is playing. Can Anna prove her innocence? Would Larkin believe her? And what happens the pair are reunited after all that time?
This is a very enjoyable read and i can't wait to see what the author has next for us.
I was kind of wary to read this book in the beginning. I am not normally a fan of historical novels but the fact that it also is classified as a fantasy convinced me to give it a go. I am happy I did. The book is set in the Kingdom of Aurelia. My only issue is that it’s a little too political for my liking.
Lady Anna was arranged to be married to Lord Roger. As soon as they wed, he turned out to be an abusive man treating her like absolute crap. This did not make Anna cower, if anything it made her stronger which I really appreciated. She spent a lot of time with her horses to escape the man she married. When Anna was only 16 years of age, she met a man by the name of Larkin and sparks immediately flew. Years go by and she doesn’t hear from him again until he is sent by the King to investigate Lord Roger. The King has reason to believe Lord Roger is committing treason.
I loved Anna as a character. She is strong, sweet, caring and independent. She endured so much in just two years. Most people would break at the treatment she received yet she lived on, raising her horses. She treated them like gold and the way that the author described them, they sound majestic. Who doesn’t love a sweet horse Lady warrior? This book is very well written and very detailed. You could vividly see the world and the characters with the amount of detail written.
Wild Lavender by Nicole E. Kelleher is the first installment to the Aurelian Guard fantasy romance series. Lady Aubrianne (Anna) is arranged to marry Lord Roger not long after meeting and while she tries to fulfill the role, it's apparent she'd rather be left to her own thoughts with her horses that she raises than be in his company. His cruel nature eventually surfaces, and Anna realizes that he is not the man she'd hoped he would be. But Anna is a strong woman and is not going to let his treatment of her and Lord Roger's people break her. But then Larkin, a man she had met during an interesting encounter only a couple of years prior and not seen again, is hired to do detective work on Roger. He has had Anna in the back of his mind ever since, but will she be found to be tied to the evilness of her husband?
This story was immaculately written, whirling with secrets and romance in a medieval setting. The author paints such a vivid picture for the readers without becoming monotonous and the plot builds at what I thought to be a perfect pace. It was very easy to get lost in the pages and difficult to put down. I am very intrigued to read the next installment and see what comes next.
Anna is a strong headed and determined woman. Trained in many areas of education, healing and fighting. She faces so many trials that would break any woman, although, somehow she forges her way through each obstacle. Brave beyond belief for the people she holds near and dear to her heart. When she finds herself married to Lord Roger as per an agreement he made with her parents, she finds herself in a world filled with hate and deceit. Can anyone be trusted? Can she gain the respect of her new people.
Lord Roger can be very persuasive and charming when he is putting on airs. In reality he is a very sadistic and power hungry man. Anna is now in his hands and he will do as he wants with her. He will make you angry and feel hatred for him. This is brilliantly done by the author.
Larkin is the womanizer at the court of King Godwin. He has no plans whatsoever, to get tied down and married. The Queen and her sister try as they might to get him to see this will come to pass.
Anna and Larken find themselves together again in the future. They have both dreamed of each other since their first accidental meeting and almost kiss.
So much happens in this story that you will be wanting to read more and more.
An enjoyable and engaging fantasy romance with an epic storyline spanning realms, mystical prophecy’s and royal intrigue. Healer and warrior Lady Aubrianne protects those she loves, so when she discovers that her frequently absent husband Lord Roger, maybe caught up in treason she must avoid them all being implicated. Meanwhile, Royal Guard of Aurelia and known rake, Larkin is investigating the increasingly wealthy Lord Roger, and what his dealings are with a rival realm. Craving adventure Larkin sets off, but is shocked to find the women who’s haunted his dreams ever since they met years before, Anna (Lady Aubrianne). Unfortunately the punishment for treason is death to all those involved, meaning that if Lord Roger is found guilty, so will his wife, unless Anna can prove her innocence. This is an exciting fantasy epic with a story full of ambition, drama, murder and sizzling romance, which had me hooked throughout. The characters and settings were brought vividly to life through the wonderfully detailed descriptive narrative, making me feel immersed in the story. I look forward to the next book in this series.
