Meg Xuemei X is a USA Today and Amazon Charts bestselling author of paranormal and fantasy romance. She loves writing badass heroines and hot psycho alphaholes.
OMG NO, JUST NO. I bought the audiobook, and because of Audibles no return policy I read/listened to the ENTIRE series. Yes I wasted my time on a complete DNF BOOK SERIES. Now if you don’t care about characters or plot and only want spice, kind of boring spice with graphic detail then go for it. As there is no connection between the main characters. As even the sex in this book is lackluster and then add in a talking in womb fetus and please give this book a hard pass!
I liked the story line. It was a neat concept (even if it the overlap of the different mythologies was odd) and I liked the overall plot. The characters were a bit whiny and immature in my opinion. Mari and her demigods especially. The author was also very repetitive. She would explain the same bit many times throughout the stories. Overall, I thought it was a good book.
Still debating on my rating, but a solid 3.75⭐️ rounded up works for now.
There were times the book drove me nuts, as sometimes the FMC made obviously poor decisions with no logic behind them. But, overall, I enjoyed this plot and the twists.
Book 1 I wanted to give this a star rating closer to 3. But the reasons why may not be this books fault. The book is well written, and the characters seem so well built I feel like I missed something. And the missing something is why I felt like reducing the rating. While this seems like a standalone, I feel I've missed 2 or 3 other book series. Tessa seems to have a story she refers back to, like a recap I missed out on. Marigold definitely has a story and there is a academy series, I thought hard about stopping this read and reading her story first...but I got the feeling it wouldn't help, it would add to the universe but wouldn't help with Tessa and Loki.
Anyway, the backstory of Tessa. She was 15 or 14 thinking Ragnarok would love her, but was instead forced to watch him with other women, actually tied up and forced to watch. Break her heart, and he tried to break her soul and mind to own her. Ragnarok also kills her family. She escapes and travels galaxies and time, being chased by him, his blood hounds, and soldiers. She must meet others who tell her cryptic words that could help her kill him and retake her kingdom. During all of this, she meets Lucifer and signs a blood contract. Now, all that sounds like a book in itself, I worked that out through bits and pieces she drops during her POV. There is also a backstory with Loki involving Mari the demigods and Lucifer. The Lucifer story also seems tied to Olympia Gods and Archangels...
So take that and add in all that happens in the actual book, and i was left with a little headache. No wonder a lot of people DNF. Anyway the book itself feels like I turned up late but I can't fault the banter, snow white the cat, the dynamic between the side characters Mari, the Dukes, Demigod son of Hades and Loki. All that is well done. The smex is okay, hot in some parts but fast before it's interrupted. And Loki, while he's the King of hell and so playboy billionaire on the surface, I couldn't help but ahhh at his love sick ways. The book ends in a cliffhanger and with all the secrets that will break things... I know there's gonna be more cliffhangers to come.
If the author reads this, please add a book order for the universe you built. Helps to know what you are missing before you drive in.
3.6 stars ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Book 2 This book feels like a filler for the relationship miscommunication thing. But for me, it missed the mark with how much angst there could have been. How the simple miscommunication could have been pulled out more so Loki really is alphaholes instead of a hurt love sick guy.
There was more action outside the bride trials, and that whole thing is really in the background now, slipping from the plot.
We have a bit too much going on outside the bride trials that doesn't seem to link back to Ragnarok, Lucifer, or the MCs directly. It all kind of dampens the who thing.... suddenly, there is a new character who seems like a big deal but seems to be there just to flip a switch...
The spice is still hot, well it's level 2/5 hot smut, could be better, could be hotter. The author chose to overuse the POV in this book, so we don't just flip back and forth. We recap a lot, and I mean a lot of what happens in the others' POV. That, for me, has a negative impact. Too many recaps and without huge gains from them...it became tedious.
3.2 stars ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Book3 A hit and miss on this book.
The ending was intense and made me wanna punch Loki for something that's not really his fault... but come on Loki, listen to your beast changes.
While I enjoyed the dynamic of the characters when they are playing their antics on each other. In-between, it was lacking...it just seemed like I had to wait for a big scene for character development. No real self reflection in their POVs, and there are still a lot of repetitive recaps.
The smex again was semi hot, like the book a hit and miss. It becomes frustrating with all the interruptions. Mainly the blood contract. On the blood contract, I don't understand why there is no one, considering they know demigods, etc. There must be a way...then again I feel like their character traits are the reason something doesn't happen....something I missed from previous books in this universe.
In the end, I did read a lot of moments that made an impact on emotions and kept drew me into the world more. Those hits out do the misses....3.6 stars ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Book 4 Last book, and it was filled with action, kidnapping, new life, revenge, and Ryder!
Although i found the series had hits and misses, I realised at the end I did enjoy it all.
It was fierce and sweet! Loki (the beast) and Tessa journey was tough but filled with some sweet and cute moments. Even the scolding for talking too much, but knowing she wouldn't have him any other way was sweet. There were annoying parts too, but that's part of the journey.
Ryder was a cute bonus, and his parting words were my favourite. I agree Ryder, cake is worth it!
The smex was okay. I just felt it could be hotter, but that could just be me. But when you have to go back because your mind wandered during the smutty passionate bit... something is missing.
I read this book as an audiobook. The narrators were okay, I preferred the female version of the MMCs, had more smirk, and growl to it. The male narrator was still good, I just imagined his voice deeper. In the end, I was used to it, and his range was good.
This is a great read but an even better audiobook. This is a long series so having it as an audio was very enjoyable. This had a lot of moving parts and once you get past Loki is different from the Loki you know from the Avengers it is even better. I really liked this Loki better. The FMC is so bad ass. The author does an amazing job writing not only the main characters but also the side characters. You need the side characters just as much. She wrote the about the characters and gave so much information that I do not feel like I missed anything from her other books or from any other series involving the side characters. I really enjoyed Meg Xuemei X's writing and she did an amazing job with the visuals and development in this story line. It is very fast paced and you really do not want the narrating to stop or story to end.
This really left me thinking about it for weeks after it. I really liked it. The "pet" is my favorite and I so want her to come live with me. I will give her ice cream every day! I can't tell you more than that or it will give it away... you will see. She is the best part of the story and I want more of her.
I read all of these book separately but having them all in one set is the best way to enjoy them.
Playboy King When a story starts off with a fight scene you know you're in for a wild ride. There's no buildup, no quiet introduction to the characters, or gentle scenery. You are thrust into the middle of a battle between life and death and it's not pretty. That's not the most common beginning to a story, and one of the things I love about this author. She takes risks with her characters and stories. She's not afraid of brutality and danger, but she also fills her stories with passionate heat and tenderness. I will be totally honest and say that some of my favorite Meg characters are her women who take no prisoners. They are violent from the get-go and don't apologize for it. They are fierce fighters, passionate lovers, and loyal to a fault. They have set directions and goals and nothing is going to stop them, even the guy they have the hots for. Tess combines all of those qualities. She's so incredible, and I knew from the first page that I was going to love her and this book. When you combine her with Loki, who was introduced in the Half-Blood Academy series, you get a pairing that makes me giddy. He is the perfect bad boy and he doesn't care who knows it. He takes advantage of his power and his looks without any remorse. Tess isn't going to be one of the women who throw themselves at his feet - she has a mission and she's determined to see it through no matter what. I refuse to give spoilers or rehash the blurb, but I will tell you that things don't go as planned. There is a slow burning love story, even though there is some sexiness early in the story, there is a lot of suspense, there is pain, fear, humor, friendship, lies, secrets, deception, and adventure. It's just the beginning, and I can't wait to see where things go, but it's a strong beginning. I can't wait to see who comes out ahead in the battle of wits between Loki and Tess, because you know their romance isn't going to be smooth, and I can't wait to see what happens in the grander scheme of the series. This one is a continuation of the Half-Blood Academy series, but you won't be too lost if you haven't read that one first. Although, you will probably want to read it after you finish this one because it's a fabulous book and it does make some things clearer.
There are very few authors who make me want to live in their stories, but Meg is one of them.
Rejected Queen I thought this was going to end up being my new favorite series by Ms. Xuemei X and if it continues in the way it's going there will be no doubt. Loki may call Tess Bunny, but this bunny has some very sharp teeth. She is the perfect match for Loki's wolf. This story starts right where the first one ends and we are immediately thrust back into the Bride Trials. The heat kicks up a notch, the relationship between Loki and Tess also progresses and their bond becomes more than just lust, and the danger is still high. I couldn't put it down, even though I desperately wanted to take my time because the next book is still months away, but I have a hard time regretting it. It was too good to walk away from. Beautiful storytelling, fun and loveable characters, action and adventure, heat and passion, and the push-pull of the enemies to lovers relationship are part of the reasons I love everything Meg writes. The bonus of the super strong and independent female lead is why this one will be one I read over and over again.
Hellfire Crown OMG! The ending is intense! Luckily I have all the faith in the world in Loki and I know I'm not going to have to reach into the book and punch him at the beginning of the next one.
Now that I've gotten that out of my system I'll tell you about the many reasons I love this book. The descriptions! The way Ms. Xuemei X depicts her scenes are an artform all on their own. The pictures her words create are magical and I don't only see the scene, I can smell it and feel it too. Then there are the entertaining interactions between the characters. The banter is humorous and makes me giggle. I love the nicknames and the way she even makes the heat not just sexy but fun. It has a lightness that I really appreciate. Next are the characters themselves. They are complex and a wonderful blend of vulnerable and fierce. They can stand on their own two feet and save the world but they are so much better when they have their people around them. The relationships between not just the main characters but also the side characters always reminds me of how the world is a better place because we aren't alone.
As for this story itself, it's the perfect example of all those things. Loki and Tessa are sexy, mysterious, secretive, sexy, and hilarious. This installment of their story has all the excitement and laughter that I love and some twists and turns that kept me guessing. As others have said, this one has a killer cliffhanger at the end and the next book isn't going to be released for a while. However, I'm from a time when it was common for there to be a year or more between book releases in a series and I've always loved going back and re-reading the entire series when the next book comes out. That anticipation feels me with joy. I love knowing that my favorite authors are also living their lives and maybe writing other stories that I may love. This series, and really anything by Meg, is well worth the wait.
Hidden Court This book was well worth the wait and just as fabulous as the rest of the series. There are battles to be fought, lies to be uncovered, and a pregnancy unlike any I've read about. There's also all the humor, steam, sass, and internal dialogue that I love so much. All the loose ends get tied up, the good guys come out on top, the evil guys get the punishment they deserve, and everything ends with a HEA. It was perfect!
Everything about this series is top-notch and the attention to detail, as well as the escapism it provides, make it a series that I feel all romance readers will enjoy.
TITLE: The Underworld Bride Trials GENRE: Fantasy Romance AUTHOR: Meg Xuemei X TROPE: Enemies-to-Lovers, Fated Mates TYPE: Series (Underworld Bride Trials Universe Box Set #2) POV: Multiple POV MY RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5
The Underworld Bride Trials Boxed Set is an omnibus of all four books: Playboy King, Rejected Queen, Hidden Court & Hellfire Crown, which tells Loki & Tessa's story. Marigold and her Demi-gods also return in this series as Hell and Earth unite to take on a new enemy.
I found the series full of twists and turns; Tessa was also a likable female main character who comes across as strong and not one to back down. I was unsure about Loki and his antics when we met him in the first series, but he won me over in the Underworld Bride Trials. Overall, I enjoyed the series and the tie-in to the previous series with Marigold's story. It is best to read in order after Mari's series, or you will find some spoilers. I am giving The Underworld Bride Trials a rating of 4 / 5 stars.
This is an amazing series! I really enjoyed all the characters and the busy storyline. I would recommend grabbing the complete series since the books do end on cliffhangers and the next one starts right where the previous left off.
The story easily kept me engaged and listening as I really never knew what was going to happen next. My only wish would have been more time spent in the trials. Book 3 was perfect as Tess had some struggles to figure out how to complete. The characters are fun, entertaining and that banter between some of them is just enjoyable to listen to. I did likeness and all the references to Gods and Goddesses. I actually was rooting for Loki from time to time. I liked how he slowly came around and is possessive of Tessa.
I did listen to this on audio. The narration in here is very well done. Victoria Mei I have listened to before and she never disappoints. Travis B is new to me but I think he did very well. They both made the listening experience exciting.
I've read of of Meg's books and this series seems to be done either when she was younger or had no editor. The storyline is interesting and slightly confusing, but I did enjoy the plot. The main issues that I had was the constant reiterating of characters and their powers, affiliation, goals, etc. repeated throughout the story. It read like Meg didn't have a editor to cross out the multiple repeated phrases and duplicate spelling errors. But, like I said. I did finish the stories, but I had to skip so many pages due to them just repeating over and over again the same insults and other issues in the plot. I tried this as a free book series thankfully, because if I had bought this I would have been pretty upset.
The fmc was a strong character which I really enjoyed but all these hints about her powers were dropped and yet we never see them fully manifest which is just incredibly annoying. The mmc read like a drugged up fratboy and was literally beyond annoying especially with the tediously ridiculous pet name. (A trait secondary characters also possessed.)
I was tempted to dnf multiple times because there was a lot of dialogue repetition that was sluggish but I just started skipping to more eventful scenes. Most if not all of these could be predicted.
Low star rating is for annoying characters, dialogue, and tbh I am still really annoyed Tessa powers never fully got displayed, used, and explained.
Awful. I got this for audible because I enjoy the way Travis Baldree interprets different characters and narrates a story. Unfortunately, the story itself is terrible. The writing is subpar and I just couldn't finish it. It has poorly written characters and dialog. I skipped to the chapters where he read (there is a female narrator for most of the book that i just could not listen to, but in her defense she didn't have much to work with) and didn't feel like I missed much of anything because it was pretty much a summarized retelling from the male character's point of view. Also, I don't know who thought the story was sexy or steamy, it was just crude. I was disappointed.
I remember this set of books, and the h Tessa. She’s fled from a man who stole her kingdom and is trying to recapture her. He’s a real mean guy, and has sent out hunters to find and return her to him. In the meantime, she’s gotten a contract from Lucifer to unalive Loki. Since this is a continuation of the overarching arc, Loki is the new king of He(ll) and he has instituted the bride trials to select a new queen. If I remember correctly, the woman he’s caught with in the first episode ends up disguised as Tessa and tries to get rid of her.
This is a very good story and I really enjoyed this one too. Ok, off to the final box set…
Completely consumed with this series. Finished it in two days. Loki and Tess
🥷enemies to lovers 💋Fated Mates
Loki the king of the underworld ends up being a cinnamon roll when he finds his fated mate Tess. Tess who is a queen on the run is also a skilled assassin. Straight badass. But sometimes she thinks like an inexperienced girl - which we find out later she is a virgin.
Loki gives touch her and 💀 vibes the entire book and I am here for it.
Although characters in these books come from previous books, you can read without getting lost. I would actually want to go back and read the other characters books.
This follows along after loki helps mari and her mates he returns to hell. This series follows a would be assassin's attempt to get lokis head for lucifer. She finds out after seeing loki the king of hell that hes her mate and now things are complicated. If you love underwold and gods this is a great book. Only a four star because the middle of the book becomes dry and boring but then picks up again with the story line at the end. There is some triggers of abuse in the book.
Loved this omnibus. This is the second of these I've read by Meg Xuemei X and I'm loving them. "We won't allow our enemies to take away from us any moment of small joy, and when we remember and do that, we'll never be broken." Tessa, a warrior and assassin, is sent on a contract to the underworld. She's never failed before, but this time may be different. Can she kill her mate, the one she's been looking for her whole life? What will she do if he finds out her reason for coming? Can she overcome the binding of the contract and win in a brutal game for her mate?
So much is happening! Not that this is rushed, because it didn’t feel like it. And not that so much happening made it confusing or was a bad thing. You just couldn’t be sure what was coming next or who was messing with everything going on. Tessa and Loki have one amazing story here and the roller coaster ride is worth every second of it!
I couldn’t stop reading this…. From the first chapter to the very last….. Tessa had me from the word go!!!! Strong, opinionated, and could back it up!!!! Yessssss Queen…. Oh, and Loki 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵…. I mean, what else can I say ❤️ Love love love this series….. a definite should read series 🥰
I absolutely loved this book series, it didn’t drag in certain areas and make it difficult to continue and since I read the box set all the way through and it took awhile I’m impressed! The story I love, the FL is such a strong character and I truly enjoyed her portrayal. I can’t wait for the next book!
This was by far one of the best books I've read on Kindle. Loki and Tessa are a match made in hell. This book was a page turner, page after, page. If you're not reading this book your missing out, and let's not talk about the fire 🔥 🔥 🔥 between these two. I needed some of Tessa ice 🧊 to put out the steam.🌶🌶🌶🌶
So, there are a lot of good parts of this book and the world building is done well. My biggest complaint is how immature all the characters seem to be. They all act like 15 year olds… besides that, it’s worth reading. There’s romance and spicy scenes. A lot of cursing, so if that bothers you, then you won’t want to read this.
This was not what I had expected at all and everything I needed all at once. The way these two found one another, two complete opposites, that were so truly perfect for one another. 😍
It was both heart pumping, and compelling the entire story. Just so good!
Meg Xuemei X delivers again with this series!! The tension and trials that the main characters have to go through to make it out in one piece is very well written. I also enjoyed characters from her other series, Half Blood Academy, showed up in this book. Be prepared to lose a few hrs, days bingeing this series as you won't be able to put it down!
This is the first time for me reading from this author. I got into it. Plenty of action and like how it didn’t drag. Loved the main characters. She was a bad ass and loved that. However, the banter between characters was cringe worthy. I felt like they were children. I continued reading but had a hard time with it.
This was a four book set and it was awesome! There's definitely a series before this series but you do not have to read it first. Really glad I bought this and hopefully this series will keep continuing on!!
I’m not sure how to write this review. It had a damn good story line/plot. But I felt like it was very immature. The writing was like reading something my 10 year old would write (minus the spice). I wish it was a little better written.
You will love Tessa and Loki’s story. There are murderous competitions, magic, Gods and love. You will laugh some of the characters antics, especially the competition between Loki and Marigold’s demigods.
The twists and turns in this series is absolute chaos, and I loved it. How these badass women put up with immature, alpha holes, I will never understand
