Sail in, sail out. Steal a man’s heart and plenty of his art.
Warren, darling Try as I may, I can't get the voice of the Jolly Roger's captain out of my head. Captain Hook believes my magic keeps him safe, but in truth I'm pushing him out to sea.
We are destined to be together, but what Hook doesn't know can't hurt me. Can't tempt me away from the sanctuary I'm trying to build on land. No matter how badly I want to taste the salt water on his skin.
Captain Hook The difference between a curse and a blessing is perspective. What was meant as a punishment has given me a wonderful life of piracy. The only cost is I'm bound to the mage who cast the spell.
Warren is a darling artist, who claims to get seasick with black hair, and one sky-blue eye that captivates me like only the ocean can. If he’s as uninterested as he claims, why does he say my real name like my heart is the only treasure that matters?
Hopelessly Hooked is a standalone gay fantasy romance featuring a fated mates trope, an art loving pirate, scorching sexy magic, and a guaranteed a happily ever after!

This novella had me entranced by its lyrical writing and compelling storyline. There was such a beautiful attraction between Hook and Warren. Their push-and-pull relationship felt driven by genuine feelings, already more than simple physical draw. I loved that the captain respected Warren's choices and cared for him - a welcomed difference from common depictions of alpha male pirates. Although being a bit confusing at the beginning, the world-building was quite interesting and I hope we get more of it in the following books!
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
3.5 stars rounded up. This was a quick little story that I enjoyed, but definitely took some issues with. I thought the pace of the slow burn was perfect for the storyline, especially for one where Warren was fighting his fate. Other then an offhand comment about Neverland and Hooks name being James, this is not any sort of Peter Pan/ Hook retelling. I also didn’t understand why the author made Warren magically Trans, it didn’t play into the storyline anywhere. I liked the characters a lot, but I think the author could have done a lot more to build the world up. Upon my second reading I don’t feel the need to add much. I still miss the world building and out side angst. I also would really love a reason why the queen wouldn’t allow a female mage or any other reason that Warren is now male. It’s so passed over it’s crazy. Yes, I love trans representation but it’s not honestly depicted here. There’s no reason or struggle,
Wildly imaginative, very hot, and charming as all get out story of two beings who are perfect foils for the other, and their struggle to arrive at a place they might be together in body and deed, not just in thoughts and feelings. I wanted to read this novella because who is sexier than Jason Isaacs as Captain James Hook or than Killian/Hook from Once? I loved this brief but satisfying story of the Captain and the mage he loves coming together literally and figuratively. The dual POV gives insights into both characters’ inner turmoil, and ultimately ends as a triumph of love over fear, as these two perfect for each other men make room in their lives for a future together.
Hopelessly Hooked is a short novella. I honestly struggled with this one. There wasn’t any world building, I felt like I was dropped into the middle of the story. I would honestly have loved to learn more about our characters, Warren and James. I really liked the concept and I’m hoping the author will go back and expand on it. Overall, good, the story has potential.
There’s something almost lyrical about this story—- the moods and essences of the characters come through beautifully. Readers looking for world building that fills in every gap and dwells in the concrete details won’t find that here, but there’s something about the nebulous quality of the lore and the haziness of the backstory, which weaves in bits and pieces of Peter Pan in the pirate with his hook and the Neverlands, as well as other familiar tales— a piper who can summon with song, a deceased monarch who bears something of a resemblance, maybe, to Alice in Wonderland’s queen of hearts, that feels deeply engaging. I liked Warren and Hook, although I can’t claim to know them, or that they even know each other, truly, beyond the deep chemistry of the magic that links them— but when there’s magic and fate and an ocean to explore, I suppose there’s no real need for anything else.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I really wanted to love this book. I had high hopes and well it didn’t pan out as I wanted it to.
The story felt slow and though there were a few times it picked up even those particular scenes seemed… meh. At times I felt a little lost as well. I almost DNF at 60% but decided to continue hoping it would pick up, and honestly, I hate not finishing a book.
BUT, I did like Hook. Warren wasn’t bad, but Hook was my favorite. Hook seemed to genuinely like Warren. I enjoyed it when they finally got together… intimately. I enjoyed the “curse/spell” whatever you want to call it that requires Hook to be at sea each month for a specific time. I wanted to learn more about that and see if Hook and Warren would figure something out to where they would be together more.
Oh, there is one part I really liked in the story. It has to do with Hook and buying things. Things to do with Warren. I found it sweet and made me really like Hook.
This was fine. It's a Captain Hook retelling with a trans mage love interest. Basically Warren is a healer and helped heal hooks hand/hook years ago and knew that they were fated. So now as Captain Hook sails the seas he comes back once a month to land to see his mage. They are not in a relationship but they kind of are. Like they know but they're not acting on it. So then some stuff happens and both Warren and Hook have to admit their feelings and blah blah blah.
Despite having violence it says a very low angst book. It's definitely one of those things where you know no one's ever in real danger because of course they're not.
It was cute, I love to see trans rep in romance and am here for a reimagining of the villain Captain Hook, who is pretty fucking soft for his love 💕
This is such a unique telling of the story of Captain Hook. It was very different from what I imagined it would be but that can be a good thing. Warren and James have an interesting back and forth relationship. Warren’s healing magic has placed an interesting spell on the Captain which requires him to be on the sea for certain periods of each month and the moon’s phases. It won’t take you long to read this and it is worth a read. Warren’s reasons for staying away from Hook eventually lose their meaning. The pirate is a patient man waiting for him to realize what Hook has known all along.
Ostensibly this is a take on the Captain Hook story, but really the only similarity is the name and that Hook is a pirate, and that's where the similarity ends.
This is a relatively short book, I read it in one sitting and even now I'm done, I still feel a little lost. You're kind of thrown right into the story with no world building and I as I was reading I wasn't really sure what was going on. I'd like to have known more about Warren, and what he did to link him and Hook together.
The story is a nice idea in concept, I'm all for fairytale retellings but there could have been more depth to this, I kept wanting to go back and see what I'd missed but the story just wasn't there.
didn’t hate it but also didn’t LOVE it — as far as Peter Pan inspired stories go, this one wasn’t UP there as there was barely any of the original story involved (there wasn’t even a Peter 😞😞😞😞)
Other than that it was a cute story with a great tension built romance, I was ROOTING!!! for them so hard. The story could’ve been longer with more explanations around the mages, Hook’s backstory and other things but I wasn’t bothered much by the lack of backstory. Everything was perfectly understandable and enjoyable.
I've found a new go-to comfort read! I curled up with this one during an afternoon and, before I knew it, evening had arrived and the story was wrapping up. We meet mage Warren as he laments that, though the spell he cast protects his love, it also prevents him from remaining on land for too long. We are then introduced to Captain Hook - and this roguish version is no where near some versions you might have read about during childhood. The two gently pine for each other and we learn that sometimes honesty is the best policy. This is the first book I've read by Sinclair and I will certainly seek out more. A soft tale for anyone who needs an escape.
It wasn’t a bad story, quite sweet actually. I just seemed to be lost pretty much the entire book — we literally were dropped into this story that felt like the first half was missing.
I am starting to see a pattern with this author... Right from the start, the reader is thrown into another world, which is rather poorly described. For most of the story I had no idea what was going on. The characters are confusing, because they are not really described either, just in vague hints and descriptions. The dialogues don't really help either, because they are awfully cryptic and vague, full of hints, half-finished ideas and a lot of unsaid things. It is like there is another plot and conversation happening somewhere behind the curtain that the reader is not privy to. Which is really weird for a book. I never quite figured out their motivations, what the big conflict really was and what makes them act the way they do. Honestly, the blurb makes much more sense that the whole book. As Alice said...
**I was provided an ARC of this book from the GRR for an honest review**
Captain Hook really made this story for me. The author really managed to make me fall in love with him. He was so sweet and sexy. I'd love to let him fight for me <3 I also really appreciated the slow burn. It was perfectly done. But my favorite part was how the author treated the "destined lovers" aspect of the love story. I thought it sent a good message. However, I overall didn't jell with the writing style. It's clear that the author had a rich world inside their mind but I don't think they fully managed to put it on page. More than once, I was left confused by what I was reading because I felt like I wasn't given enough information about what was going on or the world surrounding these characters.
P.S. Besides some movies, I'm not that familiar with the story of Peter Pan, but I think that if the main character wasn't called Hook, you wouldn't even know this had anything to do with that story. Sure, Neverland gets mentioned once but it left me even more perplexed because it leads nowhere.
picked this up for stuff your kindle day and was pleasantly surprised!! 3.5 rounded up.
peter pan has been my favorite non-princess disney movie since i was like 3 so i loved this queer take on its world. the slow burn was pretty compelling for a novella that barely scratches 100pgs and warren & hook's relationship had believable tension throughout. the writing was so lyrical and flowed so well oh my goodness. i had so many highlights for such a short story!! i loved the decision to make warren an artist — it added an emotional depth that's hard to achieve in a <100pg novella.
it took a hot minute for me to figure out the magic system of this world and there were a few things i was still confused about by the end of the novella, but that was really my only issue! i was truly engaged from the first page and quite enjoyed by reading experience. would love to read more from rose sinclair in the future!
So with a book about Caption Hook there was very little about Peter Pan's world in this. I actually don't really understand what world it's in. Like there used to be a Queen who passed away who kidnapped child mages and I think she's also the Queen of Hearts? And the new ruler is a wolf who... gave her castle to Warren... I think it was given to Warren.
Oh Warren is also the head of the Mage School (the Castle) btw and there is just him and two other people. I think people fear Mages but I don't really understand why and if they do it seems like everyone is okay with the mage school... I'm sorry the world building is a mess and I feel like I was watching a movie that I started halfway through.
The romance was cute. And I liked Piper helping Warren with his feelings and getting the couple to stop being stubborn with each other. But yeah... this was a confusing read.

I felt like I was kinda dropped into this story and I was missing the first 15%? And looking at other reviews I'm not the only one who thought this.
This novella was a a bit of a take on Hook from Peter Pan, and the mage that he falls for. (But that's pretty much where the Peter Pan similarities end lol) I really loved Hook, and the way that he and Warren, the mage, are tied together is interesting and makes for a great story.
I will say, however, I wasn't a huge fan of what caused the drama between them in the second half of the book - it felt abruptly written and not impactful. I think that if the beginning and the world building had been a bit more established, and the romance and feels between Hook and Warren a bit more intense, this would be a stronger read for me.
Warren is a mage who once healed James Hook. But in the process, the spell bound them together. Hook is James’ destiny but Warren does everything he can to stay away from him.
This one was a bit difficult to follow at times. It felt a bit clustered and jumbled and some parts felt like flashbacks but it was the present? It had a bit of humor but the romance was lackluster. I tried to feel the emotions, which is possible in a novella, but between the confusing events and strange interactions, I was too distracted in the end.
I mean, it was okay, it had some potential, but I feel like it needed a bit more length and development. 🤷🏻♀️
Hopelessly Hooked is Book 1 in the Big Bad Deeds series. This is a beautifully written fantasy story about Warren and Captain Hook. This was such an enjoyable book. It captured me from the beginning and didn't let go. Though it isn't very long there is a lot going on. I enjoyed Warren and Captain Hook's connection as they discovered it and their true feelings for each other. This is definitely a book to enjoy again and again. This is a new to be author and I will be looking into more of their work. I've really enjoyed their writing style and the flow of this book. I recommend this book and look forward to the next one.
It’s so confusing I can’t with this. The writing is good but I wish there was better use of punctuation. There were like whole paragraphs with no commas I got so lost. And zero character description. It’s dual POV. I thought the 1st pov was a guy, then realized it’s a girl; when it went to the other pov it took like 4 pages of the guy talking about the girl before he said “he”. So the girl was a guy the whole time. I’m so confused. I’m not giving it a rating cus I know some ppl like it and it’s not fair cus I DNFd it. The idea and writing style is good, but execution wasnt there.. I’m sad.
I enjoyed this quick read based on the Captain Hook/Peter Pan myth. I would have liked to know more about the MCs and had more world building, but the characters were interesting and engaging. I guess maybe I shouldn't expect to know all in a fantasy/fairytale. Maybe the mystery is part of the allure. Regardless, I enjoyed it, and I am looking forward to more tales in this series.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
So it was ok. I will admit that I was hooked by the description of the book when I first read it. This book is a retelling of Captain Hook's story but in this story, a man named Warren heals Hook's hand and created a bond between them. There wasn't much worldbuilding or development of characters( it was a novella so I understand some of it) but all we knew was Hook was a pirate and he and Warren had a history. It was fine just could have been fleshed out more.
Nice. This is a short, cute fairy tale of a story. It takes elements of Peter Pan and turns them into something quite different. There’s magic and a certain one-handed pirate captain, but not much else. Hook isn’t completely bad, but he’s not completely good, either. He keeps finding his way back to Warren without truly understanding why. Warren isn’t any more what he seems to be than Hook. Short and sweet. With pirates!

That was such a wonderful spin on Hook. I’m a sucker for a fun fairytale retelling and the author delivered on this! The romance was very sweet and I was so excited to find some wonderful trans rep!! My only disappointment was that it was a novella and I would have loved to see this as a full length book. I look forward to Pipers story later this year and I’m in the process of checking out this authors other fairytale retellings.
I had high hopes for this but unfortunately, it fell very very short.
While the romance was sweet, I just found it hard to be invested in the characters and plot because the writing was clunky and twisty (not in a good way).
Even though it was only 99 pages, it felt SO dry and daggy. Normally I go through novellas so quickly but this made me want to DNF at 50%. I stuck it through but it wasn't worth it.
Two men fight the attraction between them. He knows he cannot be with the captain so he pretends he has seasickness. The captain believes that there is something else going on with him. Will he ever find out? Will he take that first step? Can he pull away from the mage? See just how it will all go and if they will have a future together
