When Survivors Rise is the fifth book in the After it Turns Dark series. This high-octane, post-apocalyptic thriller with flawed characters explores the world after an electromagnetic pulse knocks out power when society needs it the most. No lights. No phones. No transportation. This captivating family saga reveals what desperate people could be driven to do to survive at the worst time.

Who is Elizabeth? One mention of the name in chapter one, but nothing else. It was in a scene where John is reminiscing of his late wife, but her name is Katherine I thought. I was left a little confused. Overall the story progressed nicely, however I felt the ending was rushed. With only a few pages left in the book, I found myself asking if there was another book in the series because I didn’t feel it could be wrapped up so quickly. While I’m glad Wes finally got what he deserved, I wished for more details about how John and Tommy’s final confrontation concluded. Yes, Wes was introduced to the effects of a grenade, but nothing about Tommy until the Epilogue in which we learned he died. Even more frustrating we never really understood how Russia or China was manipulating the weather. The weather seemed to be a non-issue in this book as well. For being such an integral part of book one, I was hoping for something more. I did find myself rooting for the characters and took a vested interest in their survival. A requirement for me when reading any series. I love the strong female characters and that there was no real romantic undertones that I often see in post-apocalyptic stories. I did enjoy the series and will read more from this author in the future.

I liked the book, the last of the series. I was into the characters. It just seemed that there was one bad thing after another. I also found some things that just didn’t make sense or a detail from earlier in the book that was forgotten.
Spoiler:
What happened to the dog? Why was Wes able to just walk in when a fence and traps had been put into place? Why would they fall for a chicken flying into the window? Why walk into a situation that you would get killed when it wasn’t to save anyone’s life, but for revenge? They couldn’t wait?
Just a few of my observations that bothered me, but I did like the book.

This was a really good book. Unlike many apocalypse books, this one does lose many good characters, which makes for sad parts. However, it does make it more realistic. The government does come through and there is not a lot of political, anti government rhetoric which I can live without. You care about the characters and the towns. It is well written and includes several new elements. The action is there as are the many plot twists and turns. This series is very interesting and I think you will enjoy it.
After all that has happened to John Sheridan to this point, I'm honestly shocked that he would agree to conditions to enter the survival camp, especially since it involved the indenture of his daughter. You see that many red flags, you just don't do, especially with a nearby FEMA camp run by someone that Tommy and Magnus know. The teenage gang was mostly just a distraction. The fact that we miss what happens to Tommy and only learn the aftermath was a big let down.
This series by Jack Hunt is wonderfully written. He sets the stage in book one and keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way through. The characters are so well developed that you feel as though you are part of the family. If you enjoy the post apocalyptic genre then you will love these books. I read them all, 1-5, in right at two weeks. I couldn’t put them down!! Give them a try and you will not be disappointed. - JB
When Survivors Rise is the 5th and final installment in the After It Turns Dark series and has a whole lot going on, not the least of which is a final showdown with the United Patriots, Magnus going in for revenge, FEMA coming in to help and more. The writing is every bit as good as the previous books, and the plotting is meticulous, keeping the reader guessing about final outcomes until the epilogue. 5/5 stars, recommended for any thriller fans!
What appears to be Mr Hunt’s final tale in this series. Like the other four an interesting story with multiple twists, turn, and leading characters. Does make for challenging reading (1st book hard to get into) but is an interesting story once you get into it. Makes you want to start the next episode.
Emotionally satisfying and just what I’d been looking for
It was nonstop action which usually gets old after book three for me, but there was just enough switching between characters and stories, plus locations to keep me interested to want more. Well done. I still want more.
So, I don’t usually right my thoughts on one book at a time, I wait til the end of the series to do so. Over all this series is a good read! It kept me engaged and up late, reading into the wee hours. Jake Hunt is a great story teller and I appreciate him.
Enough twists & turns to keep it interesting. Good series.
So many post apocolypse books out there, it's getting hard to find original plots. Everyone is traveling & looking for family. Thus series had enough to stay interesting.
Really enjoyed this series.Fast paced and full of action . Draws you in from the first page . Likeable characters and a good plot. I would definitely recommend this series.
This was a very good read. Nice to have a story line with a little different twist, where FEMA isn't the bad party! More realistic as to who may live and who doesn't. A good solid read. I did enjoy it!
Th series is escalating, l love the characters and plots .l hope this is not the end.jack hunt you always leave us wanting more .if you haven't read this series you are missing out.will done !!!
If you like suspense, action, memorable characters, unexpected storyline twists, and great editing, then this is the series to read. Jack Hunt is an excellent writer. This series is worth your time. Get it! You won't be disappointed.
Great read. Whole series keeps you on the edge of your seat. Believable characters that you can identify with. Sometimes happy, sometimes sad keeps you reading to find out what happens next. Jack Hunt's books do not disapoint.
Unforgettable characters struggle against impossible odds to survive to fight another day. Scout is a great character and deserves her own series of books.
This series kept me engaged the whole time. Believable characters overcoming insurmountable odds. I loved every minute of it. Thanks for an enjoyable ride.
Sad only because it's so hard when you fill you are a part of this family and Americans ready to take a stand to defend our country of outside terrorism or in country terrorist.
