Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.

Edward Lee is an American novelist specializing in the field of horror, and has authored 40 books, more than half of which have been published by mass-market New York paperback companies such as Leisure/Dorchester, Berkley, and Zebra/Kensington. He is a Bram Stoker award nominee for his story "Mr. Torso," and his short stories have appeared in over a dozen mass-market anthologies, including THE BEST AMERICAN MYSTERY STORIES OF 2000, Pocket's HOT BLOOD series, and the award-wining 999. Several of his novels have sold translation rights to Germany, Greece, and Romania. He also publishes quite actively in the small-press/limited-edition hardcover market; many of his books in this category have become collector's items. While a number of Lee's projects have been optioned for film, only one has been made, HEADER, which was released on DVD to mixed reviews in June, 2009, by Synapse Films.

Lee is particularly known for over-the-top occult concepts and an accelerated treatment of erotic and/or morbid sexual imagery and visceral violence.

He was born on May 25, 1957 in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Bowie, Maryland. In the late-70s he served in the U.S. Army's 1st Armored Division, in Erlangen, West Germany, then, for a short time, was a municipal police officer in Cottage City, Maryland. Lee also attended the University of Maryland as an English major but quit in his last semester to pursue his dream of being a horror novelist. For over 15 years, he worked as the night manager for a security company in Annapolis, Maryland, while writing in his spare time. In 1997, however, he became a full-time writer, first spending several years in Seattle and then moving to St. Pete Beach, Florida, where he currently resides.

Of note, the author cites as his strongest influence horror legend H. P. Lovecraft; in 2007, Lee embarked on what he calls his "Lovecraft kick" and wrote a spate of novels and novellas which tribute Lovecraft and his famous Cthulhu Mythos. Among these projects are THE INNSWICH HORROR, "Trolley No. 1852," HAUNTER OF THE THRESHOLD, GOING MONSTERING, "Pages Torn From A Travel Journal," and "You Are My Everything." Lee promises more Lovecraftian work on the horizon.

The Godfather of Extreme Horror is back!

Just in time to give your loved ones perhaps the most sick and twisted Christmas Present imaginable, the latest instalment of Edward Lee’s White Trash Gothic series released on Christmas Day, just in time to traumatise us all for the festive season.

When we last left the writer, and his oversexed companions, Snowie and Dawn, they were on the hunt for the notorious monster of Luntville legend. Things went a little awry and, after a series of ‘unfortunate’ events, they had unwittingly opened a gateway to Hell itself!

Featuring the despicable mafioso Paulie Vinchetti, of ‘The Pig’ and ‘Header 2’ infamy and the Larkins from ‘Header 3’, as well as revisiting the hellscape of the ‘City Infernal’ series and the mysterious black-robed women of ‘The Coven’, among many more, Edward Lee presents the latest chapter in his magnum opus, pulling together all his most detestable characters from a career spanning almost forty years, into one messed up, epic tale of perversions beyond your wildest imagination.

A trigger warning for this book would be book-length in and of itself so, rest assured, if there is a subject, theme or act which one might find potentially distressing, it is all present and accounted for in ‘White Trash Gothic 3’. Edward Lee is rarely restrained anyway, but his latest ranks up there as one of the most extreme and over the top. You can’t help but be impressed when a writer with almost 50 books to his name, especially one who is so often copied but rarely matched, is able to come up with so many new and inventive ways to disgust and appal you.

Is the whole thing a little self-indulgent? Perhaps. Lee has, after all, made himself the main character in the book. Does that in any way take away from how nauseatingly entertaining the whole thing is? Absolutely not! Lee has certainly earned it. The White Trash Gothic series has been a consistently tongue in cheek joyride and the pleasure Lee is clearly taking his literary equivalent of a Greatest Hits album is infectious. There is little or nothing in the way of coherent plot or story progression. Instead, we’re taken down an Alice in Wonderland style rabbit-hole of mayhem, with characters bouncing haphazardly from one horrifying set piece to the other. Like the ‘Evil Dead’ films, story and character development take a back seat to spectacle and visceral visuals, where the goal is pure entertainment, a goal that ‘White Trash Gothic 3’ achieves gleefully.

If you can leave your conscience and sense of good taste at the door, then there is a great deal of fun to be had with ‘White Trash Gothic 3’. Nobody writes extreme horror like Edward Lee, and he is at the top of his game here. So, get your sick buckets at the ready and prepare to be dragged kicking and screaming through obscenities and debaucheries only Edward Lee is capable of.

A fun read that ties so many of Ed Lee's books together. I enjoyed the first two in the series more than this one, but having read most of Lee's work, it was nice to see so many stories intertwining.

What imagination

This book is brimming with non stop imagination. The storyline follows on from book 2 and is equally as good. Twists throughout and the characters are great. Each one with unique qualities and described in great detail so much so you can picture them perfectly. Loved the new addition of another new character. And the surprise near the end. The read is just jam packed from start to finish. Aliens, creekers, the devil, hell, and morticians as well as the writer and doppleganger. When you read them all you think in this is going to be terrible, but no way hosie! It works amazingly with the imagination from Mr Lee. It turns out brilliant and I can't wait to see what is in store next for them all. Definitely recommend.

Edward Lee is a writer whose work I enjoy, he's written a great many different types of horror stories throughout his career, but White Trash Gothic is his attempt at a more serialized novel like The Green Mile, for example. His work can be grotesque, funny, and intelligent, but insane all the at same time. I never know what I'm going to get with this author, but it is nearly always fun finding out.

The Writer's mission in Luntville is coming to an end, The Bighead is on the loose and so is his twin sister. But before the end comes into sight, the story is about to get a whole lot more complicated for aliens from another world have arrived and they haven't come in peace. People are being murdered left, right, and center, by aliens, mafia gangsters, and of course The Bighead. But with a door to hell also being open isn't it reasonable to think that something nightmarish and truly despicable might come out into our plane of existence to wreck a terrible carnage of its own? Time will tell and the story is nearly over.

Edward Lee has written a really fun and engaging finale to this series that is gruesome, hilarious, and at times chilling. It's the most outlandish of the three segments of this story and honestly, I had a lot of fun with it. I wasn't too keen on the ending itself unfortunately, which is a little weird because I honestly did enjoy all the bizarre shit that happened throughout this series, but the ending for me honestly took me out of the story a little too much, leaving me a tad disappointed.

Overall: This series won't be for everyone, especially since it does explain a few things about The Bighead itself. It's a series that's a lot of fun if you're a big fan of Lee's work, but if you are someone who merely picks and chooses whatever is more to your taste with his work, this might not be for you and I most definitely wouldn't recommend this to anyone with a weak stomach! 8/10

*I'm not going to give you the 'what this book is about' blurb - you can read that elsewhere.

1. I'm not really sure what to say about this one that I haven't already said on the first 2 books of the Bighead Saga. This was a perfect wrap-up to the storyline and left me satisfied.
2. As I said in my review for WTG2, this installment was written stylistically similar to the 2nd book; I thought book 1 was a little different, but I'm glad this followed the same style as number 2. Had this book matched the style of the first book, it would have felt disjointed.
3. I clearly need to read more Lee! He references so many of his other works in this saga, and it made me want to read the books that align with this saga in some way - be it characters, place, etc. Beyond that, I just love his writing and how gross and depraved it can be while also touching on relevant topics for the time. So, yeah, I need more Lee in my life! #LeeIn23

loved it!!

I was going into this third installment for the White Trash series not knowing what to really expect. I was a little disappointed in #2 and was really hoping for a better book. I was not disappointed at all.
The problem with giving a review to a book like this is you can’t say too much without giving stuff away, which I hate doing. I want it to be a surprise! Like the Bighead’s sister being there and why. What’s going on with The Writer, Dawn and Snowie. The door in the basement of the house that apparently leads to hell. So many questions are answered in this book with a great conclusion. I loved it and couldn’t put it down just amazing!!

This one was kinda lenghty. A bit of a clusterfuck - Lee incorporates new storylines that seem unnecessary for the plot or worldbuilding. Nevertheless, it was great to see Lee make fun of himself in the metatext. The description of Hell reminds of Barker's Scarlett Gospels while also Lovecraftingly defiling the laws of quantum physics. And as in the previous instalments, Snowie is absolutely adorable dork.

Blending events from the previous books with his infamous gorefest The Bighead, this is Edward Lee at his perversely giddy and grossest best. No one does extreme or hardcore horror fiction like the King of Hardcore Horror, Ed Lee!

You have to read and enjoy Lee's work. This was not as good as the first three. Was not expecting some of the end lol.

I have become a big fan of Ed Lee. I love his writing style and sick and humerus tales. I enjoyed the whole WTG saga. Part 3 was good but I did like the first 2 slightly more. If you’ve read The Bighead do yourself a favor and continue the story with Minotaurus and the WTG trilogy.
