I'm convinced that the wrong copy got uploaded to booksprout, because there were so many mistakes. Normally typos and grammatical errors get left out of reviews, but these were unavoidable. There was a mistake on almost every page. You could tell that some of it was dictation into text because there were random words that made absolutely no sense unless you said it out loud very slowly. (ex: Abbott = I'll haven't, "just join me" = "just you and me") Sentences would go on for entire paragraphs with no punctuations or capitalization. I have read Kaci's work before, and the quality is never like this.
HOWEVER! Assuming this is a mistake and all errors are to be ignored, still not thrilled with this book. The premise is cute and simple, but at one point the female main character, Candy, refers to herself as "fat" to one of her best friends. Now it's established that Candy is plus sized/curvy, and she was using 'fat' in this context to describe her body in saying that North would never like her because she's a 'fat librarian.' Her "best friend" then flips out saying that she should never talk about herself that way, and she was angry with her for saying mean things about her friend. Now I am going to say this as clearly as possible.
IT IS 2022, CAN WE PLEASE STOP USING FAT TO MEAN UGLY. CAN WE STOP USING FAT AS A WORD WE ASSOCIATED WITH BEING UNDESIRABLE. STOP PERPETUATING THIS IDEA THAT 'FAT' IS THE WORST THING A PERSON CAN BE AND THAT YOU SHOULDN'T DARE DESCRIBE YOURSELF THAT WAY.
If Candy said, "oh he probably doesn't like me, because I'm not skinny like he's past girlfriend," it's still not great that she's putting herself down, but at least she's not calling herself fat to insinuate that she is ugly and undeserving of love. As a plus size person, my entire life I've had to deal with saying "oh I'm fat" or "I'm plus sized" to be immediately met with, "NO! YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL!"
Two things can be true Brenda!!!!!!!
If you are going to write curvy, plus sized, Fat characters, and cater your stories to an audience that also fits that description, have some respect for said characters and your audience. I am exhausted by this "fat people are undeserving of love that's why it'll only happen in romance novels" narrative. Romance novels are supposed to make you happy and hopeful, not remind you that a majority of the world doesn't approve of you, and no one will like you based on appearance unless they are some fictional cowboy.
Heartbroken and Disappointed. Likely won't be reading from this author again.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
