Susan lives out on the Canadian west coast surrounded by open water, dear family and good friends. She’s jumped out of perfectly good airplanes on purpose and accidentally swum with sharks on the Great Barrier Reef. If the world ends, she plans to survive as the spunky, comedic sidekick to the heroes of the new world, because she’s too damned short and out of shape to make it on her own for long.
Writing is her joy, her escape from reality and the only way she knows of to quiet the nagging harridan of a muse the universe assigned to her.

This novella was a paranormal/alien romance story. The story we got is pretty much in line with what one might expect from the title! It was a light tale that mixed humour, romance, and sex to decent effect.
I'm a fan of romantic comedy tales which is why I was drawn to this one. The idea behind the story is not a particularly original one but I always feel like the whole concept is a gold mine worth of ideas for both comedy and romance. Joran, Crown Prince of Pyros, needs to claim his mate in order to ascend to the throne one day. The problem is his planet has a very limited supply of females and none of them are his mate. His parents come up with the idea of searching for a mate in a backwater part of the galaxy where a planet of a species calling themselves humans reside. The humans might be total savages but they are compatible with the Pyrosians. The problem is that it is illegal to make contact with backwater species like the humans who are not rated advanced enough for extraterrestrial contact. Joran's parents get around this by suggesting he pass himself off as a human, at least initially, and set up a dating service so he can meet a few of these Earth females! Maggie is just your average girl who has awful luck with men. When her latest boyfriend dumps her to return to his ex-wife one of her friends signs her up to the brand new Star-Crossed Dating service. From here things play out as one might expect!
The idea behind the story might be ridiculous but as long as this type of story is played for fun it can be great! This story did actually deliver on much of what I expected from it. It was light and it was funny at times but it also remembered to mix in characters and a bit of romance that was worth rooting for. It had a bit more sex than I was expecting but that is my fault for not guessing from the cover that a bit of erotica was to be expected. I've just been reading a lot of super tame romances of late lol. Truth was this book actually had a good balance between the hilarity, the emotional aspects of the romance, and the sex.
If this had a flaw it was the fact that it was so short. It only had a runtime of 2 hours 18 mins in audio. It meant that everything happened very fast. I felt that was a shame as it gave things a rushed and underdeveloped feeling. I feel like this tale could have been slowed down and spread over 7 or 8 hours and it would have benefited the story.
Random thought: It was weird to read an abduction style romance right after just finishing Damsel. It did not hurt my enjoyment of this one any but it was an amusing coincidence for sure!
All in all this was a fun, if slightly rushed, feeling romance that had characters that were easy enough to like and a few hilarious moments. I might or might not read the next book in the series. I like what I got here but feel like what we got was more of a teaser than a full blown story which might get frustrating considering the this whole series is just novella sized stories!
Rating: 3 stars.
Audio Note: I felt like Tieran Wilder did a grat jo with the audio. Her character voices were decent and she got the humour of the story.
I'm not sure who was reading this book, causing me to impulsively add it to my TBR. I couldn't find it at my local library or through interlibrary loan, so I used it to bulk up a book order into free shipping territory. It is a silly, fun little confection. And I really do mean little—it is a novella or maybe a longer short story.
For whatever reason, I am really into romance right now. I've been rereading old favourites and this little bon-bon is helping me break out of that rut. The plot is extremely simple: the planet Pyr is desperately short of women and Prince Joran must sneak off to Earth to see who he can find. His father's people have set up an internet dating site to find mates for Pyr's young men. Maggie and her friends, Lisa and Gwen, end an evening of ice cream eating and wine drinking with filling out the questionnaire for said dating site (promising out of this world dating possibilities).
There is no dilly-dallying. Joran is certain enough for two, but Maggie must be convinced that a human barista can become a royal princess or that leaving her planet is a good idea. She was more easily converted than I would be!
Now I have to wonder if my very choosy used bookstore will take it off my hands or if I'll be donating it to a book sale. (A teeny part of me would love to read more in the series, but I question whether this slim volume was worth the cash I paid for it.)
The planet of Pyros needs women. The princeling and a few troops coming scouting for their soulmates on Earth, using the newly concocted Intergalactic Dating Agency to find true love. Satisfaction guaranteed, or double your money back. Except, of course, the service is free.
And the princeling can set the sheets on fire. Literally. It's Pyros, after all.
Cute and quick for an afternoon's escape. The science fiction elements are poorly done, however.
It was ok. I actually really enjoyed it at the start but then it got a bit insta-lusty for me. Very much “I’m going to go back to this guys planet because he’s rich and has abs”. Not a whole lot of character development or chemistry but it’s hard to fit much into 120 pages.
The planet of Pyros needs women. The Royalty of Pyros take it upon themselves to creating a dating service on earth. Joran is sent first but he goes down to earth without his guards and visits Maggie's workplace. When they clasp hands sparks fly. They are true mates. Now to talk her into going home with him. Lots of sex and chemistry and yelling too.
Okay, so this was so much fun. Maggie is a barista who has given up faith in things she can't see, hold, or depend on (which is basically a list that includes everything that's not her two best buds, and definitely includes most men). Her pals convince her to try a new online dating site, and there's enough wine in play that she goes with it, and then there's a drop-dead gorgeous man in her coffee shop and they're apparently a "match" and there's a literal spark between them.
Joran left a few things off his profile. First? He's not human. Second? He's not just an alien, he's an alien prince. Third? His species mate for life and that little spark was no random bit of static, it was a species deep genetic bond that just got switched to "go."
And boy was "go" sexy.
The funny is in equal measure to sexy throughout Hayes's novella, and I laughed at the human-alien miscommunications as much as I swooned at the descriptiveness. Also, Joran's alien race is pyrokinetic. So it doesn't just smoulder so much as it sets things on fire.
Getting Maggie to agree to go back and be a princess isn't going to be a cakewalk. And really, if there's no coffee there? That's gonna be a tough sell.
I'll be hopping right along into the second book of the trio for sure, and I'm definitely grinning at the Intergalactic Dating Agency.
Those alien mail order brides, man. Wait. Actually, the brides are human. It's the dudes who are alien. Alien and smokin' hot, as it turns out. A little bossy, too. Considering Joran is the Crown Prince of his people, I guess that's to be expected, though.
Still, I imagine these aliens are going to hit a few rough patches with the way they autocratically order their special lady friends to do things and make decisions for them without giving them any say. Live and learn, alien bros. Live and learn.
Anywho. Joran and Maggie. He's an alien prince, she's a barista who doesn't look like she has the best luck with men. I'm guessing you can imagine the sparks that fly when Joran swoops in and LITERALLY spirits her away from everything she's known. Actually, those sparks weren't terrible. Mostly because Maggie's willing to listen to why Joran did what he did. I mean, eventually she listens. THESE THINGS TAKE TIME, OKAY?
These Mail Order Brides books tend to hit the spot for me. I want something short, sexy, and full of aliens who might be big stuff on their planet, but tend to make some fantastically awkward mistakes when they find their special someone. *thumbs up*
Despite its flaws - instalove and a heroine far too easily persuaded of the otherworldly nature of her beau (pretty sure I would still be stuck on thinking I'd been roofied at that point) - I'm rooting for Joran and this series. Why? Because it is centred in some great attitudes - no, thirty year old women are neither old nor dead! No it is not ok to make choices for people without their consent. No it's not fair to assume that someone who loves you will give up their whole life to fit around yours. Creepy behaviour is still creepy in attractive people. Money doesn't make someone a better person. Close knit friendships are as important as romantic relationships and the best friends are the family we choose. And best of all, this phrase by Joran's mum: "we cannot save our future by stealing someone else's." Amen sister! Where can I sign up for this agency?? Their world sounds like utopia.
I like when aliens fall in love with human chicks. I especially like when it is urban fantasy (weird stuff happening while the rest of earth is unaware, rules of normal life apply to the story.) It is a cute story with little relationship tension. They get together fairly quickly.
I am confused about 1 thing. Has this alien ejaculated before? He states that he has been sexual with plenty of females, but when he finally has sex with his mate he says he has never… before. He can only with his fated mate. I listened a few times and I can’t quite tell exactly what it is he has never…. hefore!.
A quick read at only 138 pages this is the first in a new series by an Author who does excellent Sci-Fi Romance. Joran is sent to Earth to meet his destined mate who has know idea life outside of the Milky Way exists. This is a sweet romance with a HEA between a feisty redhead who wont be pushed around and a bossy Alpha male who is softie at heart. There are a few scorching moments where a fire extinguisher would come in handy. I finished reading this story with a smile as it is a feel good book and sometimes that is exactly what I need to escape too.
I was provided the eARC for an independent review.
This Erotic Sci-Fi Romance novella was my first Susan Hayes read/listen. I have to say that I liked it. I plan on continuing with the series.
The elicit nature of the Star-Crossed Intergalactic Dating Agency in Hayes' series was unexpected and a nice part of the story. The harmless yet potentially dangerous bit of rebellion is something different.
I gave this a 3.5 instead of a 4 because of some of Joran's behavior. Yeah he's a prince but it still irked me some.
I really enjoyed the narration. Great pace and I was happy to hear different voices for different characters.
So the story of the alien Prince finding his love on Earth, was nice enough, but it bordered on X rated. Some people like the 'intro-sex-little bit of story- sex- conflict- cute resolution- sex, end novel,' thing, but I need more story, I guess. I'm glad I got this as a free download. I probably would have been much more disappointed if I had paid for it.
I'm liking this series so far. Joran, for a prince, doesn't come off as spoiled or entitled. The Scorching was pretty hot but a bit inst-lovey. It was fun how Maggie's friends Lisa and Gwen get pulled into their own stories. The fire thing is interesting but still a little mysterious.
It's a fast read that doesn't include much drama. Having said that, this book had the potential to be a lot better. There was no character development. Almost always, I found both MCs to be annoying.
What a fun book! I love a good alien romance and Joran by Susan Hayes delivers. A series called Star-Crossed Alien Mail Order Brides has got to be amazing, right?
The planet of Pyros is in trouble. Males outnumber females by a huge margin, leaving the future of the throne in peril. Prince Joran is the last of the royal line and must find his mate. Thankfully, the leaders of Pyros have found a planet inhabited by life compatible with their DNA: planet Earth.
When barista Maggie signs up for the Star-Crossed Dating Service, the last thing she expects is to end up with someone who’s literally out of this world. Her hunky match, Joran, is charming and successful—and determined to make her his.
Joran immediately senses that Maggie is his mate, and he wants to bond with her right away. His enthusiasm gives Maggie pause initially—sure, this guy is gorgeous, but what’s with the insta-love?! She even resists him at first because he comes on a little too strong for her. I don’t read a lot of fated mates stories, so I’m still getting comfortable with the concept and Joran came on a little too strong for me as well.
When Joran reveals that he’s from another planet, Maggie is not convinced—until he proves not only that he’s an alien, but also that he and Maggie are fated to be together.
This is a really fun read. I especially appreciated that Maggie is no wilting flower—she’s headstrong and forces Joran to see her perspective, something he’s not used to doing on his planet due to his elevated status in life. I also liked Joran, who’s head over heels devoted to Maggie from day one. He has his work cut out for him in convincing Maggie that they’re meant to be, and she definitely makes him work hard to win her over.
I’m happy that this is the first in a series and look forward to reading the next book!
Maggie, Gwen, and Lisa were enjoying their girls’ night with wine and their favorite pints of ice cream. Maggie was having boyfriend troubles and her friends were supporting her after the tacky breakup-by-text-message of the night before. They all agreed they needed to find better quality men. Someone special had to be out there somewhere, right? So they agreed to sign up to the new Star-Crossed Dating Service for a free trial promising an “out of this world” experience.
Joran Pyr, Crown Prince of Pyros, has a duty to find a mate and produce an heir. With so few women left on their planet, his parents had to look elsewhere for his special woman – and he wasn’t very pleased with what they were doing! However, he was matched with a woman from Earth, Maggie O’Hara. Impatient to see her, he ditched his guards and walked into the coffee shop at closing time. Maggie recognized his picture and, as they introduced themselves and shook hands, a blue spark crackled. To Joran’s great surprise, the mating bond had activated and the Scorching process had begun!
This book was absolutely brilliant, beautifully written, and I loved it from the start! I sighed and moaned at least several times per chapter! Wait until you meet Joran and you will positively agree with me that he is magnificent! The characters were all amazing, so well presented by the author that I knew each of them personally and as friends. The story line was great, the action moving along quickly and keeping the reader enthralled! Don’t miss this wonderful book. I can’t say enough good about it – or maybe I already have! But that’s because it was an amazing story that I was delighted to be part of. Read it and I am sure you will agree.
The Intergalactic Dating Agency has a new clandestine branch. Pyros is a planet in trouble, since the skewed male to female ratio is causing the population to diminish towards extinction. The Government of Pyros has gone rogue, acquired forbidden tech, and has set up the Star-Crossed Dating app to lure prospective human brides for their elite. First among the elite? Prince Joran, heir to the throne - but only if he mates. Meanwhile on Earth, barista Maggie, in a wine-induced moment of insanity, gets an invite to beta-test the Star-Crossed Dating app. Thirty and with no viable dating prospects, Maggie takes the bait. She's matched to Joran - and then it all goes up in flames (almost literally). Joran has some serious impulse control issues, while Maggie's long-entrenched self-protective streak leads her to lower expectations and distrust of anything as wonderful as Joran seems to be. Their mating goes like a house afire, the sex is incendiary, but the relationship nearly crashes and burns despite the bio-assist from The Scorching. The dramatic tension in their story is all emotional, as two likable but very different personalties struggle to catch up to biology, and two people who thought never to find true love discover that love may strike like a lightning bolt, but carefully tending the fire is the only way to keep it burning under control. Good writing, fast pacing, clever plotting and HEA - I'd call the new Star-Crossed Dating app a success.
Joran, he's crossed the galaxy to meet his mate. Maggie, she doesn't believe in aliens and fairy tales. Got an hour to spare? Looking for a quick easy hot, Instra out of this world romance, with a sexy off worlder H, and a strong hopeful, no nonsense h? Then I recommend you start with this, the 1st in a series of Star-Crossed Alien Mail Order Brides, that has just enough within it's page's, to keep you interested and wanting to know more. I have enjoyed other book's written by Ms Susan Hayes, (Her Drift Series) springs to mind, and have yet to be disappointed, except maybe that they're not long enough. I downloaded this story 3 months ago and forgot I even had it, also can't remember if I received it for free or not, either way I will definitely be reading Vadir, Kash and Tarjen, Bk's 2-4 in this series, as I already have them.
Maggie, Gwen n Lisa r sitting around drinking wine, joking about past failed relationships, when they decide to enroll in online dating. Little do they know the chain of events that will unfold in the next few days. Prince Joran is ordered by his parents to seek a mate on a far away planet called Earth. Pyrosian female births have steadily declined over the centuries til males outnumber female population. It has been reported that human females contain Pyrosian DNA , so they may be compatible mates. But Earth is considered to be a primitive culture n contact prohibited. Only a few carefully chosen Pyrosians r selected for the stealth mission. This is the story of Maggie n Joran as they meet for the first time. Two souls , two different species, with one ultimate destiny.
I love a new series and Susan Hayes first book of the Star Crossed Mail Order Brides fits the bill. A lot of fun to read. Its like Aliens gone wild when bossy meets sassy.
Joran's planet is in pretty dire straits and something must be done quickly and because of his title he's one of the first ones to venture out.
you get to meet a cute sexy sparky red head coffee server, that doesn't believe in fairytails, she came to a hard reality and not swayed easily.
A quick sweet story that ends happily, star crossed and insta love, that made me smile. We have to believe in something why not falling instantly head over hills in love? Susan brings us her own special style I loved it. I read and reviewed this book voluntarily. Enjoy!
Very enjoyable read and loved the characters. Joran was lovely, so understanding as he learned more about his mate. Listening to her and eventually explaining everything he needed, to tell her. I liked his crew and how they too, accepted their future queen. Maggie and her besties were fun. Loved the humour in this tale. She and her girls are possibly hopeless romantics but all sign up for a dating site. Maggie can't believe her luck when meets Joran and then the fun begins. I loved how her friends were also enjoying their 'dates' but will enjoy reading their matings in the next books in this series.
I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this advance reader copy and was not compensated in any way. Too much wine. What were we thinking? Maggie and two of her friends had signed up for the Star Crossed Dating Agency. But who knew that soon she would receive a notification that she had a match. And Oh what a match it was. Maggie unknowingly was matched with the Prince of Pyros. Only after meeting, and finding that they were truly fated to be together did she discover that he future was literally out of this world. This story is unique in its own rights and sure to give you a good read.
