They rip away their sense of self, and burn away their memory to create perfect weapons that will never be able to fight back. What makes her different is she fights back before the process of breaking her was complete. Instead of trying again, the government sets her up to be sent on missions with a very special group. one that includes an average looking but genius planner named Djaem, a giant monster warrior named Uthraith, and his handler Raza, who is put in charge of their group because of her cunning and prowess. Follow the group as they learn more about each other, and their purpose as they forge through their first mission together, to find the source of powerful Ether waves coming from a mine. What they find out is some monsters aren't always who or what they seem. Scythia is a riveting space adventure that grabs hold of you, flings you through many twists and turns until you reach the end, leaving you pining for the next installment.
The start of the story gripped me in with the setting of the character we get to know as Scythia. Her memories getting removed one by one was agonising to read. I love how the author hinted at things that could correlate to real life.
Such as the Ether description, it really tickled my scientific analytical brain and got me thinking. A lot of the book did, actually. The description of Scythia's perfect blue skin perfectly encapsulates her as a Star-born. The literal embodiment of a supermassive blue star with its overwhelming power.
The character Uthraith has to be my favorite, a giant cannibal from a tribal world is unique and fresh, the complexity of this book (especially if you psycho and micro analyze like me) will satisfy your appetite for detail.
The action in this book is amazing. I hyper-focused on all the hidden details, not only in the action and it was great. The way each character fights is different, which I also appreciate. The book ends on a massive cliffhanger, which makes me want to read the next installment to the series.
Each character's personalities are also unique and the way they bounce off one another is inspired. the vivid description of not only the smells, but the way their foes just crumple under Scythia's might and the way it was described of a Tyrling made me gag. which is a good thing.
I want Djaem and Scythia to become a thing, but I know it will probably only be in my fantasies. the way psychics have a connection with the Ether and that's how they obtain and subsidize their power, and the way they can manipulate peoples mind and influence and guide them will always get me exited.
I 1000% recommend to every single soul on this planet.
Taking a chance on an unknown author. I am very particular on what I read. I need to find a connection to the main character and how they connect to the other characters. Scythia does this and more! She has trauma, history, and so many twists and turns, you will not put this book down! I must find a relationship. Trauma, abuse, how they relate to others, or don't relate, mental health. Something. Scythia provided this. If you are looking for something different and unique; check out this book. I highly recommend giving this author a read, a chance. Welcome her to the community! She is everything and more!
Man. This book. SO GOOD. First, it's a relatively short read. Roughly five-ish hours. You can read it in a long afternoon in, which is PROBABLY what you will want to do. There are no lulls in this book. It's a story about a ragtag group of "undesirables" thrown together to complete missions- or else. They've got no other options- at least not any ones they'd be willing to consider. Each of the four main characters is written with so much personality, it feels like you really get to know them. I also love when a third person story is injected with as much personality as this one is for the narrator's part. It's fantasy, it's sci-fi, and it's interesting from start to finish. Oh, did I mention hilarious?
Loved this book! The world building was truly impressive especially for it being a short read. It is very detailed and descriptive and the main characters are so intriguing that you want to immediately keep going with the next book. Finding books that write a good strong female character can be hard, but Jesse Harvey did that in Scythia. Thoroughly enjoyed this book!
I love a strong female character. This book has two! This book is not of my usual reading genre, but it kept my attention and made me eager to find out what happened. The relationships between the 4 main characters were each unique and interesting. The story was unique and intriguing. If you like good character development, strong characters, thought-out plots, space travel, the rise of an underdog, friendship, and action... Give this book a read. You won't be disappointed!
This was a quick read but so interesting! It is very detailed and descriptive and the main characters are so intriguing! The author puts a lot of detail and really shows the connection between the band of misfits. This is definitely a great read!
When an ambitious bureaucrat wants to rise to power, what does he do? Simple: hire a bunch of rogue minions to get the job done. Yet this is not the usual group of criminals: there’s Raza, a beautiful and cunning leader, Uthrairth, a deadly headhunter, Djaem, a hive-master rogue, and Scythia, a broke psychic. Can they put their differences asside to complete the assignment? Or will it all be for naught?
I had the pleasure of speaking with Author Jesse M. Harvey earlier this month. What a wonderful individual, and it really did help me with understanding the world of Scythia Protostar (pronounced Scythe-ee-uh, not Sith-ee-uh). This novel, short and action packed, is in a way the “pilot episode” of an ongoing series. You’re thrust into the action, getting a taste of the world (or…galaxy) at large, in a way reminiscent of the show Firefly. It may take some time to figure out exactly what is happening, but once it all clicks, you see the uniqueness of each character, as well as the strange beauty of the hive world unseen in many other stories.
Yet the speed of the story is probably one of its faults…at least for me. I like books that take a bit longer (although not too long) to establish things. I’m not the biggest fan of being thrown directly into the action. If the story took some time to set the scene a bit more, or perhaps slowed down just a little bit, I may have connected with the characters somewhat more…especially when it came to Raza and Uthraith. I loved Djaem’s and Scythia’s dynamic, I just wish I had a chance to understand more.
But no doubt, the next books in the series will help establish more about these characters and built upon the fight they will endure. Will they stay loyal this bureaucrat? Or will they rebel? What will happen?
Jesse Harvey had me one paragraph into the prologue and I'm hooked for life.
I fell in love with this crew of misfit adventurer/assassins. they are the most unlikely group of four people to be put together, but they work together beautifully.
Scythia is different from every main character I've ever read. She sees the world and universe from a completely different perspective. It is beautifully complex and simple all at the same time. She's also so very overpowered that with time, I could see her take over the entire universe, but only for the chocolates.
Djaem is the guy everyone should have on their team or in their circle of friends. He's smart, cunning, and way too good at his job.
Raza is a little terrifying in the sense I'd never want to run into her in a dark alley, but at the same time, I want her on my team.
Uthraith is the best and most honorable cannibalistic barbarian. For as much as he loves to fight and get into the tick of it, he doesn't enjoy senseless violence. He always seeks the worthy and honorable battle. That's not to say he won't kiss ass, because he definitely will.
A phenomenal story. I fell in love with the characters, the world, the story, right away.
Scythia and her cohorts set forth on a mission to deal with a monster in the depths of a Hive colony. On the way, they learn about each other, their circumstances, and just how brutal the empire can be.
If you're into sci-fi, fantasy or adventure, I recommend. It hits on all three.

This is definitely going into the category of re-readable. The beginning captures your attention and doesn't let it go. I loved the characters. Raza's harsh attitude with Uthraith's almost gentle giant manner ( as gentle as a cannibal can be), and then you have Djaem bland, forgettable appearance but strong psychic ability, and the star-born Scythia whose childlike manner camouflages her talent, "her monster". This first adventure with this crew was a great one. I can't wait for more.
What an adventure!! This story was an adventure through space with 4 very unique characters. It kept me on the edge of my seat! If you love a Sci Fi adventure you will love this story!
This book grips you from the beginning, once I started in couldnt put it down. Its action packed through the whole book with great character development. I cant wait to read the next book.
This author has such a true and amazing talent for character development. Before you are aware of it you are deeply invested. I can’t wait for the next!
I love this book. It is hard to really explain as I haven’t read anything really like it. Scythia is a powerful psychic who has had her memories destroyed, she is an incredible combination of powerful and innocent/naïve. She is part of a team working for a shady corporate/government agency. Her teammates include a cannibal mercenary and his keeper and a man from a hive society. Like I said, I’ve never read anything like it. There is great world building and character development. I cannot wait to continue this series
