If you only read one book in this series, make it this one! I got to read a rough draft of this book and I was very impressed with it, even in that form. This is the fourth book in this companion series, and I think it's the best one yet. I loved both Brekka and Rob. They are now my favorite characters in the whole series. Brekka dealing with her disability, and the things Rob went through as well, gave this book added depth and meaning that the other books didn't have. Don't get me wrong though, those books were good. I enjoyed them very much, and although they are pure escapism, they each had their own deeper meaning that is eventually revealed. This one however, was just special. I actually got emotional a couple of times while reading it.
There were a few times where the characters don't communicate with each other as well as they should have, but I've come to accept that this is standard procedure for the romance genre, so it doesn't bother me as much as it used to. It may have been done fewer times here, but I felt like it worked to illustrate Brekka's insecurities, which I thought were very realistically written. I've read very few books that feature a main character who is disabled and reading this one made me want to find more of them.
All the characters from the previous books are revisited in this book at some point, as they are all gathering for the wedding of Geo and Trig from book two, Finding Cupid. Trig, being Brekka's brother is in the book quite a bit. He is my least favorite character from the series, mainly because he has a lot to learn. I will say that he had me very annoyed at certain points in this book, but he also does end up learning a few things that make him more likable. And even though he annoyed me, I could also understand his misguided efforts where his sister is concerned. Sometimes it's easy to be too protective of the people we love.
Thanks to Bridget Baker for letting me read a rough draft of this and valuing my opinions. I'm not sure how helpful I was, but I do appreciate getting to read this.
I love Bridget's writing style - and I've read all of her books - so to say this is the best one she's written to date really is saying something! I've been looking forward to reading Rob and Brekka's story for months, and I the only thing that disappointed me was how fast I was finished reading the book!
I loved the laugh out loud moments, and the witty banter that Bridget always weaves into her story, but Finding Liberty had so much depth layered underneath. Brekka feels she is broken and undesirable, and when swoon-worthy Rob (with Adonis muscles and a perfect face) begins to show interest, she just can't believe she's desirable as anything other than someone to pity. It's such a sweet journey to watch Rob prove to Brekka that's she beautiful and perfect to him in every way. And in turn, Brekka builds up Rob's confidence and shows him that he's worthy of her as a man even though he's not a college graduate or a mega-rich socialite.
This isn't just a story about a woman in a wheel chair and a wounded veteran. It's a love story about how one brave couple embraces each other's brokenness and find their way to healing. We're all a little broken in our own ways, and I think everyone will discover can relate to the wonderful characters in this book.
I'll admit, I struggled at first to connect with Brekka and Rob. Perhaps it was the back-and-forth first person switches (each chapter) or maybe it was because I've read a lot of much shorter books lately and expected this one to be over as soon as it started. But... I just spent the last two nights getting less sleep than I should because I didn't want to put this down!
Brekka and Rob have both dealt with physical and emotional problems in the past. Brekka was in an a auto accident that left her legs paralyzed and unable to continue her dream of Olympic gold in skiing. Rob was injured while in the Marines and lost his best friend at the same time. Brekka is the daughter of extremely wealthy parents who have a disaster of a marriage and are emotionally distant. She herself is wealthy in her own right. Rob has had to take over managing his father's car dealerships after his father's health declined. He isn't exactly poor but needs to work to support his family. Rob also never went to college and has some hangups about not being smart enough or good enough for Brekka.
This may be book 4 in the series but I haven't read any of the others (YET!) and didn't feel like I missed out not knowing what happened in the previous books. I highly recommend this wonderful novel about two people finding love while figuring out how to fulfill their dreams!
Brekka may be ultra-wealthy, but she comes from an emotionally bankrupt family. Rob has modest means and a wealth of family love, but he struggles to find a love of his own past the friend zone. They both share a similar injury of an incomplete broken back, but one of them recovers, while the other has to come to terms with broken dreams and a shattered future. This commonality is what lets them understand the struggles they have had to face to get where they are.
These two can perfectly understand the other’s situation, but they still manage to let their insecurities mess everything up. Yet when it comes down to the important things in life, they never let one another down. I laughed and cried right along with Brekka and Rob on their journey to happily ever after and I think you will too. I absolutely adored the end of this book and what their future holds!
ETA--I just listened to the audiobook, and the narrators did a wonderful job with this book--just as they have with the others. I loved Rob even more.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT Billionaire heiress Brekka Thornton is headed for Olympic fame and glory until a car accident destroys all her plans. She redirects her efforts toward conquering the business world with her brother Trig, closing the door on her old life without a backward glance.
An IED blast sends Rob Graham back to the US with a purple heart and a broken back. After a miraculous recovery, he returns home to find that his dad needs him to run the family business. Rob never hesitates, even though he hates car sales more than pop up ads.
When Brekka’s brother proposes to Rob's best friend, their paths are destined to cross at the upcoming wedding. Even so, Rob isn't prepared for Brekka to roll into his life and turn it inside out. Brekka takes Rob to task for slighting her brother, but he’s distracted by her flashing eyes and captivating dimple. He can’t bear the thought of watching her leave his office, so Rob asks her to dinner.
Brekka hasn’t been on a date since the car accident, and Rob’s quick wit and winning smile unnerve her. She resolves to head home and duck back into hiding where the world is safe. Rob ought to let her go. He isn't nearly good enough for the highly educated Brekka, but he didn’t become a Marine by quitting when things look bleak.
Can love mend these two broken spirits, or will the weight of the past shatter them beyond repair?
MY TAKE I loved this book! It deals with a tough issue of the long-term consequences of spinal cord injury. While Rob eventually regained the use of his body after the IED explosion, he didn't forget what he learned. His increased sensitivity about what the people living with it have to deal with demonstrates what a caring person he is. He gives and gives and gives. And that's where a person's strength can become their weakness.
Brekka is a force to deal with. A powerhouse, she was also very opinionated and there were times I wanted to smack her upside the head to shake some sense into her. Growing up in a seriously dysfunctional (seriously rich) family, I was surprised that she managed to do as well as she did. I'll confess that I read book 1 in this series and then this one. That might have been a mistake because I didn't get to see her brother Trig in his love story. He doesn't shine in the beginning of this story, and it made it tough to like him at all (since I didn't get to see his softer side in the other book). But, Baker is a gifted storyteller, and Trig's story arc, while not the primary one of this book, is important as it relates to Brekka's.
I'm not going to spoil anything but there's one section of the book where Brekka is dealing with a tough choice she has to make and then the consequences that had me a nervous wreck.
I think it handles the accommodation issue gracefully and brings the issue to the forefront. Most of us just go blindly through life completely clueless of what others might be dealing with. I've never been a wheelchair user but I did suffer for a couple of years with a painful foot problem that made it necessary to use one of those motorized shopping carts.
I didn't have a handicapped placard and too often when I went to the grocery store I'd have to park far from the entrance--and the cart. Sometimes I'd cry knowing how much it was going to hurt by the time I got to one. Inside the store, it could be a nightmare! People would go zipping around with their carts giving no concern about people like me who didn't have that kind of mobility. And the stores weren't any better, putting all kinds of displays in the wide aisles making it hard to maneuver around. I was lucky that surgery fixed my problem. But that experience left me with a tiny bit of understanding. I totally understood Brekka's desire to be independent.
It's a beautiful love story, and Rob was the perfect man for her. I think they'll be good for each other.
I love Bridget Baker’s books! Her characters have such great depth, there’s witty and realistic conversation, she brings in characters from past books, and her stories are always entertaining and wonderful! I also love that they’re always clean and have happy endings. This book was a great story showing fears and strengths and the ability to overcome especially with love and support. Loved it!
I received a complimentary copy of the book. All opinions are my own and are expressed voluntarily.
In addition to being a wonderful love story, this book also teaches a lesson in how we view those that are differently abled. It also shows us how good intentions can also be the worse thing that happens. I expect a lot from a Bridget Baker book and this one delivers all of it, a good story line, interesting characters, humor and a lesson on people. I totally enjoyed this book.
This is book 4 in the series of Almost a Billionaire and is my absolute favourite. We met Brekka and Rob in book 2, Finding Cupid, and I have been eagerly awaiting Brekka’s story and this did not disappoint. Put this is on your MUST READ list. You won’t be disappointed.
I received this as an arc and I am giving my honest review voluntarily
This series pulls you in and keeps you staying. The characters are believable and endearing. You get caught up in their lives and find yourself rooting for their happy ending.
Such a good read. I love that it was longer and so could go deeper. I love that disability was just another way of life. I love the possibilities in the story. Get it! Read it! Enjoy.
This is truly a breathtaking and heartwarming romance with powerful and adorable characters that will steal your heart and touch your soul as you follow their journey towards unconditional love and hope.
This was a great story! I liked the fact that this story showed that people with physical disabilities did not need to be fixed. I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
This was going to be a one-star rating for me. Insipid, melodramatic, and schmaltzy were all words I thought when listening to this book.
But when it came to the final big conflict the author went and surprised me by not going the usual route and instead had a hero who behaved like the mature adult he should be. So I added a star. Still, I don’t think this author is for me.
Loved this! Such a fabulous story, and such a true story- folks that have different capabilities should have the support and resources to make their life as functional and complete as possible. Loved this!
An enjoyable story. I like how all of the books in this series all have different conflicts and internal goals. Well done. Glad the hero and heroine got their happily ever after.
The fifth book in the series and a really sweet one. I highly recommend reading them in order. This has been such a fun series and this book was no exception.
Finding Love and The Gift of Wings This romance is in keeping with the series. It is deep and clean and an emotional roller coaster. As someone who has recently had a spinal cord injury, I can't tell you how spot on this story is with that topic. I, too, have my very own Marine. It had me in tears more than once. I found myself taking breaks in the reading to fully mull over where the story had taken me. While this story can stand alone, a new reader may want to read the series in order as each episode shares characters. The author gave me this book, this is my honest review and the book is well worth the cover price.
I have enjoyed everyone of these books so far can’t wait for the next book. I am not usually one who reads an authors books one after the other but, here I have
Romance, clean; More of a 3.5 for me as a reader. This is longer than what I am usually reading. I loved the depth that B.E.B. took with writing this. Lots of nuances, emotions, and interplay between the characters. Clever with so many twists and turns of what is happening. Her secondary characters are integral to the success of the novel. Brekka and Rob were such great characters. Both trying to read each other, great interplay of girl/guy communication/emotion issues, and a favorite type of couple for me. Honest, hurting, hoping for something good to come (Brekka fights it, but she is hoping). The conflict was huge and so many things came to play as they were trying to figure out their relationship and what could 'be' for their future. This had so many different layers, whether the charity, the familial relationships that needed to be fixed, the hurts that they both suffered from, opening their hearts to get beyond the hurts, and preconceived ideas, and just them. Gorgeous chemistry, and we all could use a little of Rob in our lives. The H was definitely the ideal man in so many ways. Great read, fun to see the other characters from other novels in this series featured as well.
Breaks was an Olympic helpful when she was in a car accident and broke her back. It's been five years and she's now a financial genius. However, she hasn't been on a date and she's falling in love with her new sister-in-law 's best friend Rob. Rob is falling too. So of course there are issues. The thing I like best is that Brekka and Rob want what's best for the other person. What I like least is Brekka won't talk to Rob about what's buggy her.
This is the first book from Bridget Baket that I have read & I loved it. She writes with such intelligence & feeling. By the end of the first chapter, I couldn't put the book down! I love Brekka & through her story, you really understand the challenges a physically challenged person faces. Rob is truly amazing & his love for Brekka is what we all dream about. Be sure to read Brekka & Rob's story. It will warm your heart & leave you with a smile on your face.
Out of the whole series this book is the most emotional. This book is about Brekka. She is the younger sister to Trig. After a horrible crash leaves her paralyzed basically from the waist down she throws herself into work. Until a call from her brother gets her on a plane to Atlanta. Rob is best friends with Geode and in the way of her happiness. Brekka forces her way into Rob's office and instantly into his heart.
I really enjoyed this book, not a straight forward love story, but a truthful insight into a tragic accident with life changing injuries and how love can prevail, nicely written,I loved brekkas character, her independence and outspoken attitude, but also her vulnerable side. Rob is too good to be true, but not if he ever existed,he would be a keeper. Looking forward to paisleys story, she'll be fun to match up.
Along with a beautiful love story, this book contained so many positive, uplifting themes. I love the picture of beauty not being perfect and fighting for what you want in life, no matter what obstacles are thrown your way. Rob and Brekka's story is beautiful and heartwarming but also realistic and well developed. I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful tale.
This first time reading Bridget Baker. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed all four books. She kept me rivitted to each story. I could not out my kindle down. Must read. Cannot wait for the next story f this series.
I read the entire series with 48 hours. I can relate to each story in different ways. These are well written and I’m enjoying the series very much. I hope we get to see Paisley’s story soon.
I loved this book!! It had humor, it dealt with a handicap person and it had romance. Rob and Brekka were so good together. It grabbed me from the first page and didn’t let go. Can’t wait to read another from this author.
I am loving these books! The characters in this series and their lives draw me in and I feel like I’m living right beside them. Great job, Bridget E. Baker. Now I have to wait for Paisley’s book to be released.
