Betrayals and shifting alliances among the Breachers incites the Second Anarch to accelerate his plans. A sudden increase in aggression places the Servators at a disadvantage as they struggle to address their growing vulnerability.
Separated by distance and circumstance, Leviticus's friends work in the background, proving themselves invaluable as they develop inventive new defensive measures that they hope will counter the looming threat.
As Leviticus masters his own unique abilities, he discovers a closely held secret. History is repeating itself on countless other worlds and one of them may provide a solution to the Breacher menace. Bearing a roadmap from the Chief Archivist, Leviticus sets out to find answers, but time is running out.
Kallen Samuels lives in the Rocky Mountains of Canada with his wife of over 30 years. It’s the perfect place for contemplative and creative thought. Kallen is one of those people who has dialogue running through his head all day long. Apparently that’s not the case for everyone (there have been studies), who knew? Well, those internal conversations come in handy when writing a novel. Eventually, some of those thoughts found their way to the page, and here we are, three novels in and more on the way.
When he’s not reading or writing, Kallen is baking sourdough bread or tending his latest batch of wine. Now if only he could perfect the art of cheese making — he’d have all the staples of life close at hand.
I want to call out everything I loved about the book, but a lot of it would be spoilers so I’ll just say that the character arcs set up in book 1 do not disappoint, there’s some really great pay offs, superb twists that I didn’t see coming, and some set ups for the next book which has me definitely motivated to pick up book 3 immediately. Highly recommend this series!
This is a second book in a series. The first book was excellent, and this one did not disappoint. The protagonists and antagonist are great. The setting is full of wonder which I think is a mark of a good science fiction book. I wonder if the prophecy will come true or if the beloved characters will be able to prevent it.
The Dictates of the Servitors series is a sci-fi series. It is set in an earth-like world (or as the subtitle puts it, an alternate timeline) populated by humans, or something very like them. In some ways, it does not seem to be set in a future very removed from ours, but on the other hand, they have some very interesting and different technology.
In this world, there are regular people (although you don’t see many of these), Servitors, the good guys, who are protecting the regular people from the bad guys, and Breachers, the bad guys. There seem to be portals to other worlds located in this world, and it’s possible the Breachers came to it from elsewhere through one of these worlds, but I don’t remember for sure. In any case, they seem to be very human-like, just not nice. Their favorite activities seem to be killing people and trying to take over the world. They are not even nice to each other.
Our main characters in this series are, first, Leviticus Radix. He has just been appointed, or shown himself to be, the Levigator. A Levigator is someone who alleviates burden and smooths the way. Leviticus’s superpowers are an amazing ability in pattern recognition and an ability to remember just about everything. He has found several portals to other worlds, but so far, none of them have been the type the Servitors are looking for. He has also found ways to thwart the Breachers’ plans and is working on new ways of doing that. The Breachers want to abduct him and acquire his powers for their side or kill him.
The next major character is Leviticus’s best friend, Nico Callan. Following the deaths of his parents, Nico has inherited their extensive business empire and its many ways of being of help to the Servitors. Before this, he didn’t know of their existence or how much his parents had been helping them. Unfortunately, he has also inherited an archenemy, Tenika Sheridan, who has been running Callan International since his parents’ deaths, ostensibly as his guardian. But she is keeping much tighter control over the business than he wants or now needs, because she wants to get rid of him and take over the whole business for herself. Nico has to remove her from the business, which renders her an even more dangerous foe. I don’t think Tenika is initially a Breacher, but she hooks up with them rather quickly, escalating the danger even more.
Kayla Vantos, daughter of Cello Vantos, chief sentry of the Denmount base of the Servitors (this was beneath the college Leviticus and his friends previously attended, but had to be abandoned due to an error on Kayla’s part; I still worry about her not being careful enough for her current responsibilities), is Nico’s current girlfriend. She has changed her name to Seri and become his assistant. She seems to have learned from her earlier error and is doing much better. After she bests Tennika once, Nico makes her head of the business while he is fighting Tennika’s false accusations of wrongdoing in her continuing quest for control.
Kade Brixton was Leviticus’s rival back when they were in school. When the Breachers tried and failed to abduct Leviticus then Kade persuaded them to take him instead. But he has since learned the truth about the Breachers and wants no part of them. He and his girlfriend, Selica, live in fear as captives of the Breachers. Kade has been working on facial recognition software for the Breachers and has learned that they intend to use it to identify Servitors so they can kill them. Since then, he has found a secret way to communicate with Leviticus through the software, but lives in fear that he will be discovered and eliminated or, worse, that something bad will happen to Selica. Finally, Leviticus and Nico manage to rescue Kade and Selica and take them to what they hope will be a safe island.
But, as Leviticus learns more about his role as Levigator, and the Servitors expand their plans to protect their world, the Breachers are, at the same time, expanding their plans to destroy the Servitors. Will the Servitors be able to stop them in time?
