With the abandonment of Victor Faust and nowhere left to go, Izabel sets out on her own to continue the assassin’s life she has grown to become so intimate with. But she quickly learns the hard way that such a life cannot be survived alone. Within months, she is captured by The Order, with the true identity of the ever-elusive Vonnegut just a hair away. And to make matters worse—or better?—her cellmate is none other than Niklas Fleischer.
While Izabel and Niklas are being left to starve to death in hopes that their capture will result in Victor Faust’s surrender, Fredrik Gustavsson has also found himself in a predicament of his own. Willa, his childhood savior who became the most notorious female serial killer of the modern age, is keeping him imprisoned. But what does she want from him, a woman devoid of empathy or the faintest understanding of human emotion? And what will become of Fredrik if he fails to give her what she wants?
In the suspenseful conclusion of the In the Company of Killers series, Vonnegut will be revealed—to Izabel and Niklas’ shock and devastation—and the lives of the once thriving rogue Order led by Victor Faust will come full circle.
J.A. (Jessica) Redmerski is a New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and #1 Amazon best-selling author. She is also an international bestseller and award winner. Jessica is a hybrid author who began self-publishing in 2012 and later signed several titles with a traditional publisher. Her works have been translated into over twenty languages and have been optioned for film and television.
I started this series nine years ago. The author broke my heart so many times. The characters went through so many ups and downs. In the Company of Killers is one of the most original series I have read. I connected to these imperfectly perfect villains/anti-heroes. When JA Redmerski announced that The Darkest Half would be the final book, I just stopped breathing and felt so many different emotions. First I was happy that book #8 was finally releasing because the previous book was published four years ago (2018). But I was also sad because I was expecting another book or two extra in this series and I just didn't want to say goodbye to the characters. You never know which direction the author will take so I was prepared for the worst.
First and foremost, I was pretty disappointed when I saw the length of this book. I personally was expecting the book to be extra long, but it was about the same length as all the previous books (307 pages). There were twists and turns but I kind of figured some of them out, and the biggest twists felt a bit cliché if I am honest. Some of the characters didn't deserve how their story ended and others had a somewhat of a fitting ending. This book was rushed. There were just too many characters who needed their story concluded and it was impossible to fit it all in one book. I know that Victor and Izabel are the main characters, but the rest of the gang were just as important to me. There were things that I liked and thought the author cleverly included in the story.
It just breaks my heart to rate this book less than five stars but the author has spoiled me with the previous seven books and set the standard very high. I felt empty when I finished this book. The first thing I thought was: Is this it? Is this how one of my all-time favorite series ends? Unfortunately, the answer is yes. With the huge gap between the last release and this one, I wonder if the author was just done with this series but didn't want to leave the readers hanging. Am I happy that JA Redmerski at least finished this series? YES! But I was hoping we would finish with a huge bang. I really hope you enjoy this book more than I did. Jessica is still one of my favorite authors and I look forward to her new projects.
❧ Gonna keep this review short, sweet and SPOILERY AF so keep on scrolling if you don't wanna be spoiled!
❧ *DEEP SIGH* Well, that was underwhelming.
❧ Like most readers, I too have been (im)patiently waiting for the final installment of the In the Company of Killers series.
❧ First off, I was already looking at this book sideways when I saw the page count because how were all the loose ends in the previous books going to be handled in so little pages?!
❧ I was definitely right about the page count because this story did feel rushed at times.
❧ My mans Fredrik was done wrong. He didn't even get a proper ending! Imma need Fredrik to get a spin-off duet, like give me something cause I know this is not how his story was meant to end.
❧ I don't even care about Nora like that and
❧ Victor was barely in this book and then he shows up, GUNS BLAZING, and I was like sir, it took you long enough, lol. I also felt like there should've been more chapters in Victor's POVs.
❧ The plot twist did catch me off guard so that definitely had me on edge.
❧ To the Izzy and Niklas shippers:
❧ Niklas definitely got the ending he deserved.
❧
❧ Overall, I'm happy that this series has come to an end and I'm ready to move on.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Her şeyiyle berbattı. Kitapta tek sevdiğim karakteri de hiç etti zaten. Öff...
After seven books that had me worrying over the fate of these characters, pulling my hair out, biting my nails anxiously... We're finally here.
It's the final book and yet, there's so much story that could still be told that I'm not holding my breath that this is the real end.
So where does this book leave those we've come to care about?
Izabel and Nick were taken captive and for those that always wanted them to be together... get those thoughts out of your head. It was torture to watch them devolve and slowly die together, all in an attempt to draw out the true target: Victor. And where was our illustrious anti-hero? You'll never guess. And I can't even tell you because with the amount of twists and turns this story took, anything I tell you will spoil it.
Know this... Izabel was still one of the most unaccomplished agents I've ever seen portrayed. Girl still couldn't catch a clue. Her thoughts were so simple. You're about to die... where's your mind at???
And then there's Fredrik. I don't even know how I feel about where his journey took him. I didn't like it and I'm hoping there will be a book out there one day to give his time with us a proper end.
Nora made an appearance, but she wasn't given the true shine she deserved. I'm not her biggest fan, but she played her part and she did it well and I don't think this book did her justice.
All I know is this: my mind was blown by some things that happened in this book; I'm still on the fence when it comes to Izabel; Nick deserves all the best the world has to offer; and I will never get enough of Victor Faust!
I honestly think this book had potential, should it had been longer. Things just felt off, it left me very empty and unsatisfied. My favorite characters truly had a very awful ending. I don’t really know how to feel about this 😭😔
NO YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW HAPPY AND RELIEVED I FEEL RIGHT NOW BECAUSE I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS BOOK FOR YEARS AND I WAS STARTING TO LOSE HOPE BUT IT FINALLY COMES OUT YYAAYY LET’S GO BABY!
❛There is nothing in our time together that I would ever change if given the opportunity. We complete each other. We are the same person. We are Faust.❜
lmao, I waited four years for the darkest half to come out just so that I could witness the death of [redacted]. I'm going to be honest. I am disappointed and a little dissatisfied with how the story was concluded. I read 215 pages, I think? and I would struggle to tell you what the story was about.
I’m still thinking about how weirdly abrupt the ending was like I just don't get it. huh.
I am UNWELL. as Bethenny Frankel would say this series is SICK!!!!!! Amazing, captivating, fast-paced all the things. These books had my attention the entire time (minus book 3 which I could've done without IMO) but nonetheless this series deserves wayyyyyyy more recognition. I'm questioning if sales is even the right career because after reading this I could absolutely be an assassin within The Order. Truly I have no idea what could possibly live up to this soooo only 5 star recs from here on out pls and thank you!
extremely DISAPPOINTED with one of my favorite series of all time… i’d rather have not had a last book if it was going to be this RUSHED and lackluster??? I felt that the evil twin plot was just plain lazy and a bit predictable especially when Nora died and recognized whoever it was, which also her death was VERY UNNECESSARY i didn’t love her but i didn’t hate her and it was so unfair and poorly written and highly predictable with the odds stacked against them. The biggest pet peeve was throwing in Isabel randomly being pregnant then DEPRIVING us of seeing Viktor all protective and sweet, just bc she “didn’t want to be treated like a glass doll”, like she’s not that safe alone in a foreign country either lol. AND NOT SEEMING HIS AS AN AMAZING INVOLVED DAD OR MEETING UNCLE NIKLAS???I know she didn’t want to disrupt her daughter from her peaceful normal civilian life but man I hated that she was not mentioned ever again except the last few pages, and after everything Izzys been through she’ll never know her but wants to raise a newborn in the life of an assassin… And Niklas got what he wanted but all these epilogues were so rushed and EXTREMELY SHORT!!!!!!!!!! Then throwing Frederick off in the deep end with no sound conclusion to his story. I literally cried at Nora’s death and the overall frustration I felt at this quick book… i’m mad I even read it :(

This book will be released in a couple hours, but I ain't ready. A couple years ago, Jessica said she'll have to
This is the last book, so Niklas and Izabel better bang. They'll be in a forced proximity situation. What else is there to do? Well, besides trying to escape, of course.
I understand Jessica's decision to end the series with this book. I really hoped the series doesn't end with too many loose ends tho.
Well… my ship didn’t sail. And that ship was the only reason I insisted on following the series to its end. Needless to say, that was quite disappointing.
But more than that, I struggled with the numerous POVs which I found very disruptive to the flow of the main plot. Within these POVs there are recurring minor characters I’ve forgotten from the previous instalments. And, too many words were wasted on characters’ lengthy inner monologues reflecting on their life and motives. It got over self indulgent at times, and didn’t always make sense to me.
Anyway, I read up to around 77% of the book, then skipped/skimmed through the remaining chapters. I was both disappointed and relieved when I reached the end.
I wanted Izabel to end up with Niklas. I don’t know when I stopped rooting for Victor but I just find that things with him are very complicated. But then again, Izabel will probably ruin Niklas and I also don’t know when did I stopped liking Izabel. She was just too much for everyone. I hope he and Victor kills each other.
Victor having a twin brother is something expected since going back to the previous books, y’all know that the Order is like breeding assassin’s.
It’s a very underwhelming ending. One I didn’t expect. I have high expectation from this series.
Here goes nothing… Antes de qualquer coisa: I’M FREEEE WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE!

This was easily one of my most anticipated books of the year. And sometimes that build up is hard to deliver on.
For seven books, this author has put my emotions through the ringer and left me full of anxiety. So, I expected this final book to be even worse. While there are some concerning and tragic moments as this group, I've come to love over the years takes on The Order, this book lacked the intensity of the previous releases. In addition, the story was very short, so a lot of things that could have been fleshed out, felt rushed.
I will say that it feels like Fredrik could get his own spinoff, if the author ever wants to venture into darker territory. I'd be all for that.
If you are a loyal follower of this series, this book does give some closure, it just doesn't pack the punch you may expect. Take that as you may.
