Nephilim has passed the most important test at Angelborn and is ready for her first significant augmentations that will bring her closer to her goal of becoming a Guardian Angel. The training gains intensity, but that’s not the only significant change for Nephilim and the other recruits. The most important part of their education is learning how to kill – anyone, anytime, without hesitation or qualms.
Failure is not an option… especially since Olympias has no use for recruits who fail the tests. There’s only one way to pass the program alive: fight and kill.
Nephilim will have to find out if she has the heart of a killer.
The second book in the origins novella series related to Behind Blue Eyes.
Join Nephilim on her journey of becoming a killer cyborg!
Anna Mocikat is a successful Cyberpunk and Space Opera author. She was born in Warsaw, Poland, but spent most of her life in Germany where she attended film school, worked as a screenwriter and a game writer for several years. Her "MUC" novels have been nominated for the most prestigious awards for Fantasy and science fiction in Germany. In 2016 Anna moved to the USA where she continued her writing career. "Shadow City" was her debut in English in 2019. Since then she also published the "Behind Blue Eyes" series, the "Cyber Squad" series, the "Nephilim" series as well as "Space Punks" and "Neon Nights."
This book is a prequel to the main series Behind Blue Eyes (one of my favorite sci-fi series) and the second book in a trilogy about the main character from the BBE series Nephilim (Yes, Metatron has to accept this statement 😂).
Nephilim's journey to becoming a killer Guardian Angel has come to an end. Her training and countless surgeries have turned her into a killer machine and have finally given her access to her dreams. Olympia is now her new home and her adventure in the city of her dreams can begin.
This book is an exciting story full of brutal realities. Innocent children, unable to remember their past thanks to the artificial changes in their brains, are trained to become the perfect killer machines against their former friends and relatives.
It's very interesting to read about Nephilim's experiences before she becomes a cold cyborg and the role Metatron plays in her whole life, behind the scenes, unbeknownst to her. I love that I got to know the other, softer, more human side of Nephilim. And the background of her life. In BBE she was always just the cold killer for me, but this story explains a lot about her unusual behavior or unusual for a Guardian Angel behavior.
This book is also proof to me that she has always been different from all the other Angels. She and Adriel 🥰
I don't want and can't write more. You've to experience this amazing book for yourself without spoilers.
Now, I can't wait for the last book in the trilogy and Nephilim origin story (yes, Metatron's too 🙄)
It's always a mental torture waiting for the next book 😖
Behind Blue Eyes is one of my favorite series and these origin stories add another layer to the character we thought we knew making the story even more amazing!
I love seeing how Nephilim became the guardian angel she is today. Seeing her as a teenager filled in holes in her story I didn’t even realize were there.
I couldn’t stop listening to this audiobook and I can’t wait to start the next origin story!
Nephilim has made it through the first challenge and her time at Angel Corps continues. Her next hurdle will be the introduction to sex. After-all, this is a casual affair and emotions must not be tied to it. It is important to get it out of the way as quickly as possible. In her training things are going well, but can she pass the final challenge and become a real Guardian Angel? How many of her team will survive this deadly challenge?
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. I have read a lot of Anna's books and they never fail to disappoint. She is an amazing author and person in general. If you haven't read any of her books she has sci-fi, cyber-punk, and VR. Her books aren't the cookie cutter that a lot of VR gaming books are, but for now we are focusing on her cyber-punk that delves into the background of our favorite angel from her Behind Blue Eyes series: Nephilim.
In Volume One we learned, in more detail, how Neph came to be in the Angel Corps and how her first trial went. Now that she is older we see how she faces new challenges from things like physical attraction to the final test required to become a guardian angel. We get a deeper feeling of who she was before she became the one in the books. Yes, Adriel is still in this book. He is still amazing. He will always be my favorite and nothing can ever change this fact.
I absolutely loved Neph's sex interest in this book. I'd say love interest, but deep feelings and emotional bonds are frowned on in Olympias. While she wasn't at an age we consider an age of sexual maturity or consent again Olympias has some VERY different ideas on that. I am curious what happened to Rafael, but I feel like I already know. Of course I was given no spoilers, but it gives me something to look forward to. ALSO, if you've been wondering about Chamuel then you will get to see more about him in this book. Personally, I loved that aspect soooo much.
After the results of the final test there is still much to learn about our blue eyed favorite. I'm sure we will get a closer look soon as Anna told me she will have the ARC of Volume 3 ready for me in the near future!
The only thing I can really say negatively is that it was a bit more repetitive than Volume 1, but definitely alot more action packed then volume one since it's more of an introductory story. You definitely can see the evolution of Nephilim and her peers and I was shocked at how much she'd changed for the better, and how sweet it was to see a somewhat human(emotional) side of her as well and her peers too. Raphael is the dude I was swooning and rooting for and I hope they cross paths in the next book. Again, my theory is still strong in regards to Metatron, and his intentions with Nephilim. I enjoyed this volume a bit more than the first and loved the simplicity of Mocikats writing and thankfully not trying to get her point across by using pretentious or flowery writing.
This is the continuation of the story from book 1, so if you've not read that one yet - get on it!
I'll admit, I've become a bit of a Behind Blue Eyes Stan at this point. The day a new book is released, I'll buy and read it straight away. The writing is always great, the characters well fleshed out and the world in which the events are set is really exciting and thrilling.
We're back at Angelborn in Nephilim book 2, the school that educates, moulds and creates (literally) killer cyborgs. Follow Nephilim's progression from small, frightened girl to frighteningly deadly young adult.
As enthralling as I found volume 1, volume 2 is even better. Mocikat masterfully navigates the journeys of the students, maintaining pieces of childhood even as they strive to shed their last vestiges of it. These characters are deep, and Mocikat helps the reader feel their fears, their triumphs, their passions. She helps me imagine the awkwardness of my own middle school years, adding to it the element of failure spelling possible death. This truly is a look under the hood of the making of the killers known as Guardian Angels.
Just like Nephilim 1, I could not avoid listening to this in a single sitting! It’s so enjoyable from start to finish and flows seamlessly. I love having the backstory on the killer cyborgs you come to love (most of them anyway 😉) in the Behind Blue Eyes series. These books can surely stand alone but do yourself a favor and listen to BBE as well as these! True to Anna Mocikat’s style, she’ll leave just enough loose ends to leave you impatiently waiting for the next one.
A great follow up to the first origin story as we learn even more of the brutal training that the Angels go through to become the elite predators they are. Told very convincingly and with the expected personal touch for Nephilims side this was very easy to turn each page.
