The golden boy next door? He's a man now, and he's back in town… whether she likes it or not.

Since her mom died, Evie Cauley’s held her life together with dollar store tape, the kind that barely sticks. Waitress at the local diner by day and amateur baker by night, her only goal is to make sure her little brother graduates high school without turning into a serial killer. But it all unravels when an expensive disaster threatens the house her mom saved every penny to buy.

When West Hawthorne got drafted by the Los Angeles Devils, he was more than happy to trade cornfields and painful memories of home for palm trees and endless sunshine. But when he’s suspended from the team after a steroid scandal, the golden boy of baseball needs to re-earn the trust of the fans that once adored him. And what better way than spending his summer coaching his hometown team, the Creek Water Cougars?

When West walks back into town and asks Evie to be his assistant coach, she thinks she’s being Punk’D. She’d rather eat canned frosting than work for West, her childhood next-door neighbor and the boy who once stomped all over her heart. But the job pays the money Evie desperately needs. And maybe the person who helped build the walls around Evie’s heart is the only one who can knock them down.

This is a voluntary review of an ARC from Hidden Gems.
Evie has been taking care of herself and her brother for the past 7 years since the passing of their mom. West comes back to town and they reignite their friendship.
Well written, home town story with plenty of ups and downs to keep the reader interested.

Home Sweet Home is a down to earth relatable story. Evie feels she had to hide her feelings and take on everything that came her way alone, along with not being a burden. When her high school crush comes back to town unexpectedly things get complicated. With the help and support of her best friend Kayla and her boss Joe they help Evie see she has support and she is not alone. Loved that a small town came together and helped dreams come true.

This was a sweet, quick read for anyone who had a crush on the popular boy next door growing up, definitely a great book to bring on vacation. The characters are quickly likeable and the small town of Creek Water lends itself to a series - always welcome in this genre! I would have liked to have seen more of West’s interactions with his friends from home other than Evie, but otherwise a fun story.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I still stand firm with hating second chance stories, but this one wasn’t too bad. Maybe because they never actually dated in the past, just had some blossoming feelings.

But I still side eyed a few things. West and Evie went to the same high school and he drives her to school every day. She had a crush on him and he flirts with her, but then she overheard him telling a guy it’s not like that and she’s not his type. It’s also briefly mentioned she’s seen him making out with a bunch of girls in front of his locker (ew) which I’m hoping happened prior to her crush.

My main issue is that after she hears him say that, she kind of ignores him and then he leaves for college. They don’t speak for 10 years. Her mom dies when she’s 18, she has to take care of her 10 year old brother and not go to college, works all the time and can barely stay afloat. West apparently parties it up in college, and works hard to get into the major leagues playing baseball. And was his life perfect? No…but when she googles him, he is seen with a bunch of beautiful women and seemingly has a pretty good life.

I don’t think they would’ve talked ever again if he wasn’t suspended from baseball and back home. Like he never checked on her, didn’t even reach out when her mom died or come to the funeral. (He said he didn’t know what to say) I guess they weren’t that close but it made me sad that she’s had such a rough decade.

So I didn’t feel the depth between them I wanted in that regard. She also never asks about the women, even when his agent rubs it in her face, and I feel like West brushes off any comments so like…was he a ho? Unclear. Thankfully she wasn’t a virgin, even though it seems she barely dates and has been celibate 2 years.

Moving on!

I did like that it has issues more than their romance. There’s plenty of family drama, and I liked how her bond with her brother ended up.

West had some complexity too and wasn’t just a love interest, but had some demons he was facing as well.

I did like them together, and how he wasn’t deterred when she’s frosty to him. And I enjoyed how he was good at coaching and with the kids!

The spice is very minimal. It’s not quite closed door, but you don’t really see anything, just fyi!

So overall, it didn’t change my mind on second chance romance, but had some heart warming parts!

I received an ARC copy of this book via Hidden Gems and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.
Told from the POV of a single character, Evie who's been struggling single handedly for the last 7 years to raise her younger brother after the death of her mother.
Her childhood crush West Hawthorne returns home after a knee injury forces him to rest up from baseball during the summer season.
Feelings resurface between them, but Evie is scared to ask for help and also admit how she feels..... will these two lovebirds make the most of their second chance!!!
Great storyline, loveable characters and a wonderful HEA.

Home Sweet Home is such a beautiful and heartwarming small-town romance. Evie and West are so great. This book felt so relatable and honest. Evie is so strong and determined and I felt for her. West is just great. I understood both of them and the decisions that they made. The book was sweet and funny at times. I enjoyed Frankie Bloom's writing style. She did an amazing job with her debut novel. I look forward to reading more of her books.

Never have I ever loved a book so much! I am an avid reader, I literally read daily so I've read my fair share of books but this one was amazing! Frankie you did an awesome job with this book and I truly can't wait to read more from you. I was literally crying in chapter 24. It took me less than 24 hours from start to finish I could not put it down. West and Evie are amazing characters! And I really hope you expand on Kayla. The only thing I wish had been done differently was the way you breezed past west and rich towards the end. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall for that conversation.

What a read this was filled with so much angst

Emotions all over the place

Quite a sad tale of loss hardship harsh words in childhood affecting how we see ourselves

Struggling to keep your head above water so to speak money worries going through life on autopilot until love finds a way to bring relief although even that’s a stressful

Families fighting to protect each other

A good read although left me feeling sad despite the ending

Sweet and engaging, this one is a delight to read. The author does so many things right – she’s created a small town that’s not cloying or cliched, a sports hero who’s still guy-next-door nice, and a heroine who’s determined but not stubbornly stupid about it. Add great supporting characters and a feel-good HEA and you’ve got a keeper.

I really enjoyed this story. This was a great small town romance. I loved the characters but I feel like we could have gotten to know the town a bit more. They mentioned some other minor characters but didn’t always go into much detail about them. But overall a good read.

A sweet small town romance. Evie and West grew up as neighbors, he drove her to high school, and they had a fun, flirty banter that allowed for some gentle rubbing and put downs between them. Until one day something Evie overhears West say crushed her young heart.

Ten years later, West is back in town and is coaching the small town’s youth baseball team while in suspension from his high profile MLB career for using steroids. Evie isn’t thrilled to see West, now nearly ten years since he left town for college. When he asks her to be his assistant coach and tells her it’s a paying job, her desperate financial situation makes her accept it despite wanting to say no.

I loved how despite the differences in their current lives, both Evie and West had emotional hang ups and baggage to work through. The characters grow and discuss feelings in a relatable way, yet still have missteps they have to work through together.

Evie has been guardian to her younger brother, Josh, for the last 7 years after their mother was killed in an automobile accident. Evie gave up going to college and has barely been scrapping by financially, she has a pile of bills she tries to tackle and she’s extremely stressed over her situation.

West is the returning hometown golden boy, but under a cloud of public shame over his steroid use and suspension from baseball. His happy, upbeat personality hides an inner pain. West is fantastic as a coach to the teenagers, able to relate to them and being out their best. The teenage boys are a riot!

I really enjoyed the story, the characters are appealing and relatable. The story is told from Evie’s
POV, and I would have loved to have some chapters with West’s POV to get a better perspective. For a first book I think Frankie did a fantastic job, and I’m interested in reading her future books.

Evie Cauley life has not been easy for her. Her mom died 7 years ago, and her dad walked out even before that, so it fell onto her shoulders to take care of her younger brother. She's had to give up her college dream and is working as a waitress and finds that her paycheck falls short each month and is stressing over how she's ever going to break even all while worrying about her brother, who spends more of his time closed up in his bedroom than he does doing anything else. Life starts to look up when her teenage friend (and the crush that broke her heart years before) and neighbor West Hawthorne returns to their small hometown, after his professional baseball career is in jeopardy after an injury and a scandal. He's back in town with plans to coach the summer baseball program.

He offers Evie a way to earn some extra money as his assistant. She agrees despite knowing less than anything about baseball, even though she fears that if she lets down her guard, she's going to find she still has feelings for him and she knows all too well that all good things come to an end.

Home Sweet Home is amazing. Evie is so strong willed and determined to dig herself out of the financial hole that she's in, without having to ask for help from her boss or her best friend. West's offer is a godsend, coming at the perfect time so she can pay her late payments to the bank and not lose her house. West is THE best. He's a good guy who made a bad decision and discovers that his small home town just might be even better than where's he's been chasing his baseball playing dreams.

I really enjoyed this novel. Both sweet and funny, the book made me chuckle out loud more than once, which rarely happens, mind you.

I really enjoyed our heroes. Evie is brave and a little stubborn (but not terminally so), and is trying so hard to keep things together for her younger brother that she forgets to keep things together for herself. West is her former neighbor--his mom still lives next door--who's been out in LA playing pro baseball. His fame and riches never went to his head though; he may have left town about a decade earlier, but he's still the kind guy Evie crushed on in high school.

The pro sports angle was almost unnecessary, though I understand why the author went there. I do think it could have played a bigger role; it was almost odd that this star athlete's return home (after a steroid scandal) didn't make a bigger splash than it did. As it was, his star status didn't have much of an impact.

The two make an excellent couple though, and the secondary characters (especially Evie's BFF Kayla and her brother Josh) are great too.

If I read the author's profile correctly, this novel is her first to be published. What a great maiden voyage! I would read more from this author in a heartbeat.

Frankie Bloom's "Home Sweet Home" is a simply sweet hometown story. For the past decade, baseball legend West Hawthorne has avoided his hometown Creek Water. In the process, he left behind Evie Cauley, his neighbor and once close friend. When he leaves California because of a sports scandal, he finds himself back home, and needing Evie's help to repair his reputation.

Evie is hell bent to avoid West. When she was fifteen, West used to be her closest friend and drove her to school everyday. Her youth was full of memories with West and moments of flirting, but West destroyed that hope with some careless words. While West has lived an exciting life of fame, Evie has been scraping to get by as she takes care of her teenage brother, and is running out of options to keep their house. West might have the only thing she can't say no to, money which would catch her up on bills and let her breathe a bit.

These two characters are wonderfully developed. They each share varying degrees of stubborness, but also kindness. They are both willing to help others and they both can't deny the chemistry which is definitely electric.

Surrounded by a collection of other great characters, this is a fun, sweet read.

This is a small town second chance romance and it is Evie and West's story and it is definitely a must read and what a great start to a new author. When Evie's mom died she started taking care of her brother while being a waitress in the day and baking at night to make ends meet and keep there head above water but then disaster strikes leaving Evie in a mess that she doesn't know how to get out of. West got drafted to the Los Angeles Devil's and was the golden boy until a scandal went him back home to redeem himself by coaching the hometown team. West and Evie have history that ended badly and now he wants her to be his assistant coach and as she needs the money she takes the job instead of telling West where to sling his hook. Will this be a second chance for them connect or will it all fall apart yet again only time will tell what the outcome would be. I absolutely loved this book and I couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting because it was a real page turner and so addictive and I can't wait to read more book's in the future by this author.

Evie and West's Story . . .

Evie Cauley has been raising her brother, Josh, since their mom died. She is struggling to make enough money as a waitress at the diner and a baker in the evening because the house their mom left them needs repairs. She is their sole support, trying to keep Josh in high school to make it through graduation.

West Hawthrone lives next door to Evie. She has always had a crush on him, but when he became a pro baseball player for the Los Angeles Devils, he moved to LA. Now after an injury and a scandal over steroids, he has returned home. He is trying to fix his image by coaching the hometown baseball team, and he wants Evie to be his assistant coach. It will supply the extra money she and Josh need to make their home repairs. But working with him is bringing back old feelings. Does West feel anything toward her? Is there a chance the two of them can find a HEA together?

I was given a free copy of this book by Voracious Readers in exchange for a honest book review. Thank you for a copy of the book!

Evie has been looking after her younger brother Josh ever since their mother died when she turned 18. Even though she had dreams of leaving Creek Water, she had no choice but to withdraw her college acceptance and stay. Since then they have struggled to make ends meet. Fast forward 7 years and her old next door neighbour West has come home from LA after failing a drugs test for his major league baseball team with a proposition on for Evie. Help him coach the local baseball team and get paid to do so.

The book is a really sweet read! The characters are interesting and their stories and different for each of them! The story flows well and it’s easy to flick through the pages. In particular places I found myself smiling at the characters! Would highly recommend!

Evie life was turned upside down seven years ago, she gave up a lot and struggled to raise her younger brother, Josh while she was barely eighteen. Her long ago crush suddenly returns to town and Evie's life is once again turned inside out, she never expected her hopes and dreams would come true. West made a bad decision and had to return home after an injury, in hopes to win his teams confidence back. Once back West never expected to make such drastic decisions about his career and life, to really embrace what he truly wanted instead of continuing down a path he wasn't happy with. This is a story of second chances in life and love, it's about going after what you really want and letting others help you. It's also about accepting help and asking for help when you really need it, especially when others are offering. Evie and West once had a crush on each neither new about, in this story they are given a second chance to pursue what had been there for years.

They were neighbors and friends till West went to college and then became a professional Baseball Player. Now years later Evie is working at Joe's and raising her brother after their mom passed away. Will bills mounting, on the edge of losing their house. Evie goes out one night with her best friend and who shows up? None other then West. Hes home after being injured and being suspended. He takes up coaching for the baseball team and asks Evie to help out. Hes willing to pay her. She agrees only since she needs the money to save the home. Between working and assitant coaching she crushes on West like before. Does he feel the same? Sure seems like he might. This book was soo good. Such a sweet hometown romance. Love the characters and the relationship they build. I laughed, I cried and I feel in love with this story.

I was introduced to this author and book through Hidden Gems ARC program. It sounded like a cute, small-town romance and it did not disappoint. The book is very similar to a Hallmark movie and if that is your style this is your book. This is the story of Evie, who is a waitress and amateur baker who is struggling to survive and get her younger brother through high school, but things are very hard. When West Hawthorne, boy next door and major league baseball player, returns home for the summer, he offers Evie a job that could solve all her problems!
Like I said, pretty standard Hallmark movie fare, so my main issue was that I wanted more. Evie and West are likeable enough and their relationship grows as the book progresses. The secondary characters were interesting and believable and added to the story.

This was a good read. The main that that brought the story down for me was this is a single POV story. I would have loved to have West's side of things. Also, this was more Hallmark movie and I like more spice in my romance novels. Other than that, it was a good story. I thought that Evie was too stubborn for her own good most of the time, but I was happy that she was able to see that her friends were willing to help when she needed it. I liked what I was able to learn about West, and I thought he was a good guy. I liked the progression of their relationship from friends to more. The ending was sweet, and it was a good HEA for these characters. This was a first for me from this author, and I will be reading her again.

Home Sweet Home was a very charming love story with beautiful storytelling and endearing characters. West and Evie grew up living next door to each other. West leaves his home town right after high school to attend Purdue and become a star player in the Major Leagues. Evie stays behind to care for her brother after the death of their mother. Years later, after a steroid incident, West comes home to rebuild his tarnished reputation, only to find Evie struggling to make ends meet. Their romance is slow and tender. Following your heart rather than fulfilling expectations is the take away. Just a beautifully written, feel good little gem.

Can West knock down the walls he helped build around Evie's heart?

This was a great small town romance. West & Evie's story takes you along a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Evie is just managing to hold her life together whilst making sure her brother graduates. West needs to re-earn the fans trust after a steroid scandal so he's back in town this summer to coach. West shattered her heart years ago & now he wants her help. She really needs the money but is it worth the risk to her heart?
Only time will tell if her walls will come crumbling down.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. This was my first book by this author, and I really enjoyed it.
West is an MLB player but was just suspended after getting caught taking steroids. Now he's back in his small hometown coaching a little league baseball team to prove himself.
Evie's mom died right before she graduated high school, leaving her to take care of her brother and a pile of bills. She has been struggling for years, but it has finally caught up with her. Now she is jeopardy of losing the house.
I love a good small town romance with a HEA ending. This sweet YA book was the perfect read.

3.75 - Second chance with the first crush

Evie and West's story took a little while to get moving. It was more of reconnecting and discovering masked realities than romance. There was a smidge but not enough of a romantic connection for me to be their cheerleader. I was left with a ton of questions about Kayla's history (Evie's friend) but it looks like her book is next. I am hoping book two will have a better pace. This is a voluntary review of an advance reader copy from Hidden Gems.

There are subtle nudges throughout the story that poke at your mind without outright saying what is going on. I enjoyed reading Home Sweet Home because the title said quite a bit about the story. So many struggles and challenges Evie took on when she took over care of her brother. Even as everything was falling apart, she never gave up. I love a strong woman.
