My writing covers a wide range, with fiction being my favorite to create, with two dozen or so titles under my belt. There are 18 titles in my YA interactive Try Not to Die series and 24 more in the works. I also have two nonfiction titles, both inspired by a reckless lifestyle, playing Ivy League football, and battering the hell out of my brain as an unsuccessful MMA fighter and boxer. Unlocking the Cage is the largest sociological study of MMA fighters to date and TBI or CTE aims to spread awareness and hope to others that suffer with traumatic brain injury symptoms.

First of all, thank you to @BookTasters and @MarkTullius for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.
Creepy. Dark. Twisted. Deeply, deeply disturbing. Wonderful! The book starts with lyrics from the heavy metal group Slayer, so you know what is going to follow. 28 stories of death (do not expect a happy ending) that will satisfy every horror fan. 90% of the book was an easy 5* for me. There were three or four stories that were just good while most of them I would like to see developed in whole novels. My favorites were "Wrong Side Tavern", "Lethal Injection, "Glory", "To Catch a Killer", Hit the Lights" and "Book of Revelation". All the stories are good but some of them have the ability to enter your mind and make you think about them constantly... One of my favorite books this year and definitely a re-read.
So good. I like read short horror stories, this book doesn't disappoint. There are 28 stories in there (so so), I liked at least 20 and I dreamed about nearly 5 of them. The style of Mark is very precise, and I thank that. He knows what he wants to tell and he does it tremendously good. I gave 4 stars because I didn't like the other 8 stories, there's no in between with this book. I recommend reading it if you are looking for something creepy or spooky before bed, you won't regret it (even if you get nightmares about this like me).
Thank you Booktasters and Mark Tullius for the e-copy of this book. I really liked this collection of short stories and I thought they were well written. Some were creepy, other weird, spooky and scary. My favorite stories were: Wrong Side Tavern, Twisted Memory, Mommy's Big Boy, Reunion, Every Precious Second and Surviving the Holidays. I also liked the Stephen King, "The Stand" reference. I will definitely read more books from this author.
After a slow start ,the stories got better. Really loved the detailing and gore but at times it felt a bit Amateur , a very small bit that makes a huge difference, but personally loved it a Lot . There were few stories worthy of great short films would love to get a permit and adopt these one of these days. Thank you for reading my review.
I have mixed feelings about this book. I enjoyed and was moved by three or four of the stories, but I was left unimpressed by the other tales in the collection.
Here are some of the short stories I really enjoyed, in order of appearance.
Reunion: one of the story I liked the most, worth by itself the price of the book. A lucid tale of madness an perversion with a great ending. Extremely morbid!
The Artist: one of the few surreal story of the book. The sense of sadness and inevitability permeating this one is still reverberating with me. Try as much as you can, evil always wins.
Every Precious Second: and then we get this one, a beautifully woven tale of love and commitment. The author poured his soul into writing this. This one moved me so much I had to put down the book for a while just to recover.
All in all, the book is worth getting if not only for those stories I mentioned.
Didn't expect this to be a short story book with the collection of 28 terrifying yet spooky stories. Little bit of early for spooky season eh?
It gives me satisfaction in reading about the evil people receive their dues. What goes around will come around eventually including omission. I like most of the stories but there are some stories with cliff hanger and some story starting with lovely beginning but ended with gruesome death. Clearly evil comes to both evil people and good people.
I like how fast paced this book is and the description is quite vivid, makes you feel like sleeping with one eye open.
Of course a read like this is filled with gores. If you are looking for additional to your spooky read, this book is the right one for that. However, I do have to warn that this intriguingly wicked book is not for the faint of heart.
A wonderful collection of short horrifying tales, each guaranteed to lead you into a world that shocks or alarms, while leaving you wishing for more. Horror stories have always been a way to cleanse my mental palate, an escape into a world that is more terrible than reality, and all the more satisfying for making me grateful to return to my safe, if slightly boring, real life. This book of stories certainly satisfied this need. Several of these stories, such as "Mommy's Big Boy", and "Workshop After Math", stayed with me a long time. The author reveals a deep understanding of the human mind, what intrigues us, motivates, and deeply terrifies us. Many of these pieces and themes could easily be spun into lengthier tales, or novels, and I would love to see Mr. Tullius write some kind of horror tome to keep me occupied in his delightful creation a bit longer.
I'm always impressed by short stories that really hit because the author is trying to make a hard impression in 10 pages or less. (Typically.) The vast majority of these stories wow-ed the hell outta me. Some I thought I had figured but didn't. I only had a few endings guessed correctly. These were dark & sick & so much fun to read!
I received a free digital copy of this book through a giveaway hosted on GoodReads.
Twisted Reunion is a spooky collection of situations go from fairly normal to horrifying in a matter of pages. It contains monsters and murderers, accidents and betrayals, and everything in between. After reading this collection, you will likely find yourself looking over your shoulder and a bit more afraid to take risks, because in these stories, almost any common fear is explored, and comes true in ways much worse than most would ever consider.
Individually, these stories would probably each be amazing. From a purely technical standpoint, the stories are very well written, and I was amazing by the first few. However, the magic wore off after the first five or so, though the quality did not change in any perceptible way. Rather, the later stories suffered by their position after the earlier in the same way younger siblings may suffer prejudice from teachers who have taught their siblings in the past: as much as you try to judge each one on its own, the similarities you see make it impossible not to make comparisons. In this case, the sense of knowing that a twist is about to occur somehow cheapens the twist itself after some time. Most of the twists aren’t even that bad, to be honest. Even though many of them are predictable in some ways, others still have a level of mystery as to when and how it will be revealed. Furthermore, although I did predict the twist in many of them, starting from the very first, it didn’t dampen my enjoyment just because my suspicions were confirmed. However, much like a maze loses its charm after the first hour or so of wandering it without much variety, the charm of the horror turns becomes boring from simple overexposure.
I will still be giving this book 4 stars because the skill that went into the book was obvious, although the experience of reading it straight-through makes it more of a 3.5. If you enjoy horror, I recommend it to be used as a source of stories to be shared on Halloween or at sleepovers, where you will only be reading a few at a time and the knowledge it’s going to be twisted in some way is part of the charm. If you are planning on reading it just to read it, however, I would recommend breaking it up along with another book, or to read it during a long trip, where you are either reading more to pass the time than to be looking for something to fully entertain you, or you are reading it during the lulls between activities. Otherwise, I can tell you that just reading it, story after story while sitting still, can get old, which is unfortunate because many of the stories could have easily been a high 4 or even a 5 if they were on their own.
Every writer aspires to generate some type of reaction in their readers through their words and stories. After reading Mark Tullius' Twisted Reunion, I feel like I've been punched in the gut, such is the intensity of the feeling of dread and uneasiness he's left me with these tales. I write this as a compliment, as the sensation clearly indicates that his ideas were successfully translated into the paper, and they do cause reactions. Twisted Reunion is the first of his writings I've read, and I certainly wouldn't like it to be the last, as I liked his way with words and narrative skills while presenting us with all manners of "twisted" vignettes in which there is a common element: whomever did the crime will pay the price or, another way to put it, no bad deed goes unpunished. The stories in Twisted Reunion are taken from everyday situations, and his characters are ordinary people that have decided to act upon their dark desires and, consequently, will pay for it. There's a serene beauty about all this, as there are no intricate scenarios or plots but rather very simple and plain ones. Ah, but then the bizarre and the mysterious come into play, and retribution is made. Let me be clear on that: retribution, which is not the same as justice. That's where I found more appalling these stories: Tullius doesn't provide a moral compass for us to follow, he just presents an eerie situation, perhaps even disgusting, and he sees it through to its conclusion. There are no heroes that will come and save the day, and it is up to us, the readers, to join him in this voyage through insanity. In particular, I enjoyed immensely the story called "The Artist", in which the writer perfectly combines the fantastic with the horror; as a matter of fact, I'd love to see him take what he's already built there and expand it, as I feel it has a lot of potential; I also praise his delicate touch of madness and family love in "Surviving the Holidays". In conclusion, Mark Tullius delivers on his promise of shocking us through his writings, not particularly gory, but certainly uncomfortable sometimes. Twisted Reunion for me is definitely a nice way to meet a good writer who's piqued my interest. I'd love to read his treatment of other genres, as he has a fluid prose and takes care of the details of language, a plus in my opinion. Thanks, Mark Tullius, for that imaginary punch in the gut. You've caught fully my attention. Twisted Reunion
First and foremost, I would like to thank Mark Tullius and @BookTasters on Twitter for providing me with an ebook copy of Twisted Reunion in exchange for an honest review. I apologise for taking too long to complete the book and come up with this review.
Although I do love reading short stories because of how convenient they are, I am usually not too fond of reading a short story collection in one go, because I tend to lose focus due to too many different characters, and it gets to a point where I simply don't care about any of the characters anymore. This is one of the reasons why it took a while for me to digest Twisted Reunion.
I would honestly say that I have some mixed feelings over this short story collection. I'm quite a fan of horror reads, and I would say that even though the stories were not that terrifying, they are undeniably horrific if it would to be happen in reality. Mark Tullius combined several supernatural elements with psychopathic human beings, making most of the horrors enjoyable to be read. Unfortunately, I couldn't find myself enjoying all the stories to the most. Some of them had characters that I couldn't even comprehend or empathise with, while a few others just left me baffled as to what I just read.
But for more than half of the short stories in this collection, I truly enjoyed them to bits. The one where "an artist whose paintings become reality" particularly left the best impression on me, mainly because of how beautiful it seemed to hint at first, but things slowly went down to hell once the artist finished her paintings. Another one that was very memorable to me was where "a man who longs to rid himself of an annoying companion". I thought I had an idea of what their relationship was supposed to be at first, but then I was proved absolutely wrong at the end and it just made the whole story make sense in a better way.
Overall, I did enjoy reading Twisted Reunion a lot. I think that Mark Tullius is a great writer, and I would love to read more stories (especially horrors) from him in the future. Most of the stories, if not all, involved a huge deal of violence and horrific events, so if you're comfortable with that, then this book would be perfect for you!
If you are looking for a book that will make you rethink turning off the light at night, then you need to grab this book. It is a perfect read. These stories are spooky beyond all belief. There are very few things that make my skin crawl, very few books that have made me think anything but, what a good story… but these stories, oh my. Forget lions, tigers, and bears - you are going to be looking at the person next to you. The person in the grocery store.
Some of these stories are enough to make you shrug and check under the bed once before turning out the light. But there are several in this collection that will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up, and probably cause a grey hair or two (I seriously think I got a few more reading some of these). There are some that will outright make you rethink the sanity that you think you might have a grip on. 28 tales. 28 curl your toes, oh my goodness, reads. Who says you have to wait till Halloween to find those spooky reads? Mark Tullius has devised a new level of horror, and these stories will stay with you long after you finish reading them. Grab the book, and curl up for an evening of scary with a side of absolute horror. You might be sorry, then again… **If you are squeamish, or have an aversion to language, etc. This is NOT the book for you**
Being an avid fan of stories like these I consumed this delicious little lot & welcomed the insightful darkness of each one. 28 Stories to leave a chill down one’s spine & have you checking under the bed for monsters. It doesn’t matter what age you are everyone knows if you dangle your feet over the side of the bed the monsters will get you.
My favourite-‘Mommy’s big boy’ hung over me for a few days, fantastic story, quite Irivne Welsh in its manner. A downtrodden Mother, a down & out boyfriend & a baby that becomes very vocal & vivid when the 2 consume LSD. The Reunion; classic monster story, a brother’s disappearance, a controlling father, a ruby ring & a pile of bones, delightful stuff.
Others include a story of being sent a slip of paper to warn you in which manner you will die your forthcoming death, the paranoia that consumes you when you learn what it is to be. An artist painting a canvas which turns sinister in reality with each stroke, cannibalism, psychosis, creatures, murders, all enchantingly wrapped & waiting to be read.
The sequence of the stories was well thought out & flowed nicely. The characters were well written, each story was individual & quarried from the depths of imagination. This author also does Podcasts which are delightful, a nice soothing voice to lead you into a false sense of security before the horror unfolds. Very much enjoyed.
If you are keen on horror and open twisted-endings, you better go get 'Twisted Reunion' by Mark Tullius to your favourite bookstore.
It is necessary to say I received the book for free in order to give an honest review.
Twisted Reunion is a compilation of 28 short horror stories. Some of them, might make the reader feel scared just by making up each scenario in his/her head since they are well-written. The author includes lots of details which somehow make you think you can go from a normal beautiful day to a creepy one or find yourself day-dreaming about them.
Each tale is different and completely twisted. Some of the stories are so good I certainly believe they can become great novels. They already have the right amout of horror and unexpected endings it is easy to binge-reading and wanting more! The best part is that if you are on a tight schedule and not able to read for one hour, you can always catch up and not worry about where you stop in the storyline.
Of course I recommend the book and also, to read it at night and dare yourself to enjoy the horrible things Tullius describes
Twisted reunion was a decent read. The short story format made it easy to pick up and put down at any time, which made reading this a breeze. Unfortunately, not all the stories in the collection are of equal quality, which reflects the fact that this book contains stories the author wrote over several years (I believe it goes back all the way to 2006)
It is a nice collection of interesting ideas that will leave you wanting more. Mark’s writing is easy to read, his descriptions are detailed but for me, they often failed to set the mood properly. Most of the stories in this book would have benefitted from a few more pages each to properly set the tension and that uneasy feeling before a big reveal typical in the horror genre.
That being said, horror is not an easy genre to pull off and this book still contains some interesting gems like Wrong side tavern, The book of Revelation and Hit the lights.
I just feel like the author can sometimes get hasty in his reveals which makes them lack the punch I would expect. Nevertheless, it was still an interesting book I would recommend to a frien
It's been a while since I've read a book I was unable to put down but Twisted Reunion fit that need brilliantly. From the very first page you are pulled into the tale Mark Tullius weaves with his words, held on the edge of your seat as you wait for the story to reach its conclusion and even though you know that when you reach the last sentence it is the end for that particular story you want more.
He doesn't disappoint with any of his twisted tales and each and every one has a gripping, and nerve racking, plot that keeps you guessing until the very last line. The characters are well written and, dare I say it, normal (at least until they're not) and you never see it coming which in my mind is the mark of a talented writer.
Would definitely recommend to anyone that likes a suspenseful thriller you can't put down and can't help but read again not long after finishing it.
I won this book for free through Goodreads giveaways.
If you're looking for good, bite-sized horror stories, this book (or any of the three it compiles) is the one for you! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and actually read it in a couple of days. For some of the stories, I was not quite sure what exactly was happening, but then at the ending when you realize the truth, I had to re-read the story again and saw it in a different light, which was an unusual quirk I enjoyed. There were just a couple of weirder stories I did not care for as much, but overall the book was engrossing and will come back to make you think of them later! (I'm looking at you, Hit The Lights, probably my favorite of them all.) After I was finished I loaned it to a friend who LOVES horror anything, and he just loved it as well.
Twisted reunion by Mark tullius. A collection of horror stories. Experience chills as you read these stories and more: • A pornographer's horrific early morning ritual. • A beautiful baby boy who knows what he wants. • An engineer sees life on the other side of the tracks. • A drug run goes awry. • A family's unique Christmas tradition. • An artist whose paintings become reality. • A man who longs to rid himself of an annoying companion. • A child terrified by things that slither and ooze in the night. • Come join a soldier on the run in the jungle. • An old man's quest for the perfect photo. • A woman who sniffs out killers. • A life coach whose own brand of “therapy” goes way beyond cruel and unusual. • A young man who can't let go of the past. I liked some more than others. 4*. Netgalley and indie reader.
I receive a free copy of this in exchange for an honest review so here it goes. In the past I have often found some horror fiction tedious but these stories did not disappoint! The stories are really good – bite sized creepy tales and horror stories. The stories are different so there is something for everyone although some were very strange up to the point I had to reread them again once or twice to try and be sure what exactly the story was about. Good writing means the stories are easy to read, gripping from the first sentence and the descriptions are perfect and make sure you can form the images effortlessly in your head as you follow the story. I enjoyed some more than others; I have a handful of though including ‘Each Dawn I Die,’ ‘Wrong Side Tavern’ and ‘Changed Man’ to name just a few… Would recommend and will almost certainly be rereading these stories in the future!
First of all, it was unexpectable work. Reading the stories was very hard sometimes, with all of the graphic descriptions of yummy ways to being mutilated, shot, or eaten by creatures. Some of the stories were too much for me, but I survived them without obvious scars on my poor soul (it's a joke, I have none). It was a challenge and I passed, enjoying every horror scene in front of my eyes. It was a journey, very interesting and kind of educational. Some of the murder techniques were really interesting and I would like to try them. In my books only, of course. Nevermind, thanks for the nightmares and I absolutely recommend this book for everyone who dares to feel the fear and terror of characters, which were tested in many twisted ways.
If I could, I would give this book 2.5 stars, split straight down the middle. My reason for this is that I'm undecided on how I feel about the book. Half of the short stories were absolutly amazing but the other half I often felt myself saying "what on earth have I just read". I could make head nor tail of these stories. I have to be honest, if I hadn't of been given this book for free to leave an honest review at the end, I probably wouldnt have finished the book and it's simply because of the stories that just left me baffled. When it comes to the stories that I enjoyed though, I REALLY enjoyed them. I even thought that the author, Mark could even extend a little on these good stories and I would happily read them.
"I wanted to give this book a try because I love a good horror anthology and it's been years since I've read one. Normally, the ones I read are also a collection of various different writers (preferably laced with a story from Stephen King or Graham Masterton), but this one is exclusively Tullius' writings.
That being said, it was really fun. The stories were full of the usual twists, sometimes graphic and other times just kind of sad. But horror takes on many forms and sometimes sad results are scarier than others.
There were moments where I cheered a little (even if I probably shouldn't have)--"
A perfect amount of horror. The stories aren't so graphic that they are overbearing and yet they give just enough detail to get the point across. Each story is different from the last with no reoccurring themes, which is great because it keeps the reader engaged.
The stories were well written and easy to read. Some had a nice little plot twist where you didn't know what was happening until the very end and some were predictable. If you have a hankering for a good horror story, you should check out this book.
Twisted Reunion is a solid collection of short horror stories. There were some that I like more than others, but there were none that I did not like. Tullius has quite the imagination. Some of these short stories could have easily been full-length novels.
My mark of a good read is dropping a "WTF" while I'm reading. Twisted Reunion made me drop a few of these lol. I really enjoyed Tullius' style of writing. I think it takes tremendous skill to write well-developed characters in so few pages. I look forward to reading more of his work.
This book was very interesting. I loved most of the stories. They were all short to medium and precise. One of my favourites was one of the first ones about that guy that kind of lost his memory and thought his wife ran away. It was very shocking, seeing that he actually was a murderer! So sick and horrifying. The author really did a great job in writing this. I have always loved short stories and this is one of my favourites.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Written in a horror style reminiscent of the late, great, Roald Dahl, this book is an excellent read. Mark absolutely nails most of the short stories, but I felt that a couple revealed the twist too early in the story, and a couple left me feeling a little bit baffled. Overall though, I would more than happily recommend this book to anyone who likes a twisted tale or two, and would be more than happy to read more of these.
A real treat for lovers of horrors. So many stories and so many twists.
Beautifully written from the twist at "the wrong side tavern" to the punch in the chest that is "Every Precious Second". Mark made sure to put something for everyone to enjoy in here. Will definitely be reading more of his work.
