Janson was just an average adolescent that kept to himself. One evening his parents took him on a random late-night drive up the mountain; the next thing he remembers is waking up from a coma in a hospital with no family and painful premonitions. When eloping from the hospital, he is helped by an odd man who introduces him to a group of other adults that Janson can relate to – Stavros, Iaso, Radha, Valo, and Casimir; they all somehow acquired supernatural abilities conveniently after experiencing a traumatic event.

After meeting this small group of people, Janson learns that the world he thought he knew is nothing more than a battleground for the otherworldly…demons that crave nothing but blood. It just so happens that somehow, this group of disgruntled and strange individuals that Janson is now involved with holds the key to humanity’s only chance of survival. An open portal lies deep into the depths of a cave; a cave that humans have never been able to successfully explore; a cave heavily surrounded by blood-thirsty demons that decapitate anything that comes; a cave that warns the public to never

The man confronts them with sensitive information that changes their entire perspective on everything. What will happen if they decide to use their powers to eliminate one another rather than the evil enemies? What happens if everyone’s powers collide? Janson worries how much blood may have to be spilled to make it out alive. He and his newly-acquired group of friends must find this portal and close it before demons remain free to roam the earth and wipe out humanity.

Darkness Surfaced has it all: people with intricate supernatural powers, adventure, demons, a variety of likeable characters distinct from one another, and a twist readers won't see coming. I feel like fans of urban fantasy tinged with horror would like this a lot.
