Author note: NIGHTFALL is a 40,000-word novel based on the novella Bleeding Heart.
When a desperate scientist injected her with a serum developed to kill vampires, Jillian Conrad’s blood became death-at-first-taste to the undead. But this also meant a death sentence for her…and time is running out.
Declan Reyes, Jill’s dhampyr protector and former lover, contacts a vampire-hunting friend who brings them to a secret research laboratory, one with the potential to develop a cure based on a sample of Jill’s poisoned blood.
Declan trusts his friend. And Jill trusts Declan. And one day very soon, she holds tightly to the hope that they can be together without any deadly obstacles standing in their way. The only question is, will either of them survive that long?

Jill is learning the hard way how to deal in her new world where nothing is as it seems. Declan help sometimes can be frustrating as de story develops right along. Be ready to jump into the next book, to see where the series go.
Aside from a brief vampire attack, the first half is - (Much of the info. learned in book 1 is repeated.)
Thankfully, I hung in there, b/c during the second half, I was like -
Jillian is taken to a secret government facility to have the Nightshade removed from her blood. She’s so desperate for a cure, she foolishly trusts the doctor. To no surprise, things quickly go wrong—it's predictable but still a fun, fast read.
Jillian and Declan are fiercely protective of each other. Aside from a kiss at the end, Declan is mostly emotionless due to the serum he's on. In the one, brief sex scene, Declan takes care of Jillian’s needs. If Declan doesn't find a cure, I hope Matthias steps in to provide love and passion—perhaps as the new love interest. (I'd be happy if this happens.)
Declan and Matthias want Jillian. Now Declan's friend wants her as well. 🙄 (Jill must be a very hot woman.)
☹️ Matthias nor his evil brother, Kristoff, are in this.

● Jill has known Declan for one week. They and the baby go to Los Angeles.
● Jill believing that Matthias is dead, names his dhampyr daughter, Sara. Meaning "princess," it's a fitting name for a king's daughter.
● Declan took Sara somewhere safe while Jill was shopping. He doesn't tell her because she can be vampire influenced to share the location.
● Jill thinks the serum may not be permanent, when Declan has traces of emotion.
Jackson, a vampire hunter trained with Declan, messages him. They meet at a bar, where Jack says a scientist can help Jill. D&J agree to visit the secret facility the next morning.
After the last experience she had in a secret facility, Jill asks Declan if he trusts Jackson. Declan says that Jackson and his sister, Jenny, come close to being like family. Jackson saved his life during the vampire fight that cost him an eye.
● Jackson's sister, who he raised, is the only person he loves. He'll do anything for her.
Dr. Victor Reynolds worked with Anderson who created Nightshade. He says he can help, but it won't be quick or painless.
Lawrence is the doctor's vampire assistant, who was turned against his will. The MCs aren't happy, but Lawrence assures them that he's different.
The doctor says he can't recreate the Nightshade serum. It can still kill vampires if protected from oxygen in the air. He demonstrates by shooting a vampire with Jill's blood. He wants to bleed Jill, but Declan refuses.
