The perfect Thanksgiving recipe for disaster — means, motive…and opportunity.
As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, Selena finds herself soothing the nerves of her friend Josie, who’s now Globe’s newly minted mayor. Popular television preacher Aaron Galloway is bringing his traveling prayer gathering to town, and Josie is worried Selena’s New Age shop will attract negative attention.
Josie’s concern is touching, but Selena can’t imagine her humble little shop being any more than a blip on the faithful’s radar. Still, she does a quick Tarot reading, just to be sure. To her dismay, the cards warn there’s trouble brewing. What kind and how deep it goes is anyone’s guess. Until Galloway falls over dead of arsenic poisoning — and Josie is accused of murder.
Holiday plans are put on hold as Selena races to prove Josie’s innocence. And as she begins unearthing something rotten under the megachurch’s squeaky-clean veneer, the real killer is getting nervous...and determined to mow down anyone who gets too close to the truth.
A native of Southern California, Christine Pope has been writing stories ever since she commandeered her family’s Smith-Corona typewriter back in the sixth grade. Many reams of dead trees later, she’s happy to announce that her debut novel, Fringe Benefits, was published by Pink Petal Books on April 8, 2010. Her short fiction has appeared in Astonishing Adventures, Luna Station Quarterly, and the new journal of dark fiction, Dark Valentine. Her paranormal novella, Playing With Fire, was released on August 5, 2010.
While Fringe Benefits is a straight contemporary romance, she writes in a variety of genres, including paranormal romance, fantasy, horror, science fiction, and historical romance. She blames this on being easily distracted by bright, shiny objects, which could also account for the size of her shoe collection.
After spending many years in the magazine publishing industry, she now works as a freelance editor in addition to writing fiction. She lives with her husband and an explosively fluffy Pomeranian mix. Her house is pink, but don’t hold that against her.
Selena has a lot to do before Turkey Day descends on her. It's her first since she and Calvin got married and some of the Standing Bear Clan (including Calvin's Mum and Dad) are coming for dinner. She and Calvin are loving married life and the town seems to have settled down. Before she can rest on her laurels though more murder reaches Globe and this time poor Josie is arrested by the Sheriff!
Josie is having a time of it. Newly elected Mayor, Real Estate queen and now murder suspect! Pastor Aaron and his evangelical entourage came to Globe with short notice and calamity has struck.
Poison, politics and passionate Christians are unlikely bedfellows but weirder things have happened in Globe! I really enjoyed this Thanksgiving set murder mystery with a side of Paranormal. The romance between Calvin and Serena is still fresh and Archie's humanity is also being explored. I'm not a religious person myself but I understand why some cling to it but I am a sucker for megachurch’s being the "villain" - there is something about all that squeaky-cleanness and bilking money from people in the hope of salvation that really roasts me!
This review is of Prophet Motive by Christine Pope. It is the 8th book in the Hedgewitch for Hire series. I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Selena, our friendly Hedgewitch, has very few things to worry about. Well, she and hubby Calvin are hosting Thanksgiving dinner for Calvin’s parents and others. That would make anyone a little nervous. So when she finds out a television evangelist is coming to her quiet town, Selena isn’t too worried. She knows how to avoid him. But then there’s a death, well a murder. And Selena can’t stay uninvolved. So how does she solve the murder, fix Thanksgiving dinner, and still be calm? You are going to have to read this book to find out. And don’t worry: if you haven’t read the rest of the books in the series, the author give the basic facts about the characters so you won’t get lost. But of course you will want to go back and read the series because it is that good! I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did! Happy reading.
Since this is Book 8, there is a lot of backstory in the first seven books. It would be more enjoyable to have read them first, to appreciate all the “in-joke” references in the current book. The pace of the story is leisurely despite it happening over just a few days. Selena gets deeply involved in another mystery when the Life Springs Church comes to town and her best friend, Josie, is arrested for the murder of its pastor, Aaron Galloway. Selena is sure that Josie is innocent, and will do everything in her power to prove it, and ensure the real poisoner is brought to justice. Selena follows a trail of vague hints and clues, helped by her psychic skills and trusty crystal, to finally determine the guilty party, and with help from Sadie and Calvin, bring them to justice. By the way, it was none of the usual suspects! Be sure to notice the chapter titles that give a hint of what’s coming next.
The eighth book in this series focuses on several interesting issues. First of all, Selena will be hosting her first Thanksgiving for Calvin’s family. As a new daughter-in-law, she most likely wants to impress Calvin’s mother, who has always hosted the holidays. As with several of the previous books in the series, Selena is again faced with a mysterious murder to solve, although this one is close to home as it involves a very good friend. There are several twists to the story that makes it difficult to guess who really committed the crime. The story has lots of suspense and is hard to stop reading until the very last page. It’s almost tempting to check the last few pages for the murderer’s name! I highly recommend this book as well as the rest of the books in the series which provide a lot of background details of Selena’s and Calvin’s lives
Book eight of the Hedgewitch for Hire series, and it’s the first Thanksgiving Selena and Cal are celebrating together with family as a married couple. I really enjoyed this it was funny and felt like it was a real holiday with family. And Josie, poor Josie, she just ends up in this kind of situation. It’s nice to see a bit of a different side to her, as she’s not my favorite character, but this was one of those moments where I really felt for her. Christine Pope has a way of creating worlds and characters that fell like they should just exist in real life. I did receive an ARC but this does not affect my thoughts or opinions.
Another mystery for Selena to solve in her small town of Glove. But this one concerns her good friend Josie who is accused of murder. Being that the Thanksgiving holiday is around the corner, Selena is under pressure to get her friend out of jail and the real criminal found. This 8th book of Hedgewitch for Hire series is a great read and it continues the saga of our good witch. I recommend the book highly along with the entire series.
I love this addition to this fantastic series and this author never disappoints. Once again Selena has a mystery to solve and this time it’s close to home because her best friend has been framed for murder. With thanksgiving coming, time is of the essence to chase down and find the real killer. Exciting, thrilling and full of suspense, theres is twists and turns that had me guessing right up until the very end. Simply fantastic!
These Hedgewitch for hire books are just so enjoyable to read. Selena must help prove that her friend Josie is innocent of the murder she is accused of committing. She has to accomplish her sleuthing while trying to get ready to celebrate her first Thanksgiving with Calvin and his family.
If you've been enjoying the Hedgewitch for Hire series then you will want to read this book (though quite frankly it doesn't really seem to add a lot to the series as a whole).
Prophet Motive: A Witch. Yesteryear (Hedgewitch for Hire Book 8) by Christine Pope. A Televangelist is murdered and Selena’s best friend Josie is accused of the murder. Selena has to investigate and prove Josie is innocent.
I enjoyed reading this book, it has an entertaining storyline, the characters are well written and I can't wait to read more from this author. I received this book as a Free copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
Every bit as good as the previous ones in this lovely series. Christine Pope is a very talented writer who keeps us guessing until almost the end. And Archie is doing well too! Love these tales, great characters and stories that really entertain.
