Songs of the Reed

Rate this book
A man close to death is discovered somewhere in strife-torn Kashmir, alone but for the company of birds, in a decrepit room that is silent but for their agitated songs. Where does ‘The Birdman’—as he is named by his perplexed rescuers—belong? In which soil is his misery rooted? Roots are in fact the leitmotif of Heena Singhal’s Song of the Reed, inspired by Rumi’s poem of the same name, which talks of the lament emerging from the flute, and the longing to unite with its the stem from which it is cut and fashioned for the satisfaction of others. The narrative stretches itself over countries and continents, beginning with the experience of Noor, a disillusioned girl of mixed heritage in contemporary Spain, who embarks on a quest for her real home. Meanwhile, bright and beautiful Reva, from an orphanage in New Delhi, also resolves on an energetic hunt for her lost family, reminding herself every step of the way that grieving is a luxury only for the privileged. Somehow, their disparate paths cross, united by their common compulsions. Separately and together, they search for a meaning to the love and hate in their private lives and in the world, coming to realise that in Kashmir, at least, the war between the two is never truly over. About the Heena Singhal has a degree from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and a degree in Commerce from The Delhi University. When she is not writing, she is reading, spending time with her girls, painting or choosing the books for her Children’s Book Club. She began writing this book when her first daughter was born in 2017 and completed it in 2022 around the time her second one arrived. The Songs of the Reed is her first novel.

Interestingly Nice

This story is about two girls from two different paths, who need freedom in their life to live peacefully how their paths cross with each other and all.

I need to say, this is one of the quite interesting books I came across in reading, I felt like I running along with them in the story, once you started reading this story, you will feel like, you're with them and you're facing that obstacle with them.

I like how the author wrote this story, Noor and Reva, noor is from Spain and she lives there. Reva is an orphan from Delhi. It's freaking impossible right, how they even meet, they are strangers and it's like the universe wants them to meet and cross their way to each other, this book holds the strong connection that includes violence, rape, and struggles they have to face because they are girls, how they have their Justice for what they wanting and all.

While reading this, I felt slow and dry at the beginning of the story but after a few chapters, it was interesting to read, which kept me on edge to finish this beautiful story.

𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙞𝙩𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙩𝙤𝙡𝙙. 𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙡 𝙤𝙛 𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙩 𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙤𝙪𝙘𝙝 𝙞𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣.

What a book! It is hard for me to believe this is a debut novel. The writing is so mature and powerful.

It is a story of two girls- Noor and Reva scouting for their roots.
Noor, living in Spain, embarks on a quest for her real home, and Reva, a beautiful girl from an orphanage in New Delhi, is on an unfaltering hunt for her family. It is beautiful to witness how their paths cross, these two girls who are driven by desperate compulsion in pursuit of their roots.

I love how the book progresses. Keeping an audience hooked with a timeline this complex, is not an easy thing and the author has done a wonderful job. The transitions are smooth and seamless. As you keep flipping the pages, you find yourself wanting more.

It is amazing how the author throws light on so many burning issues around us- PTSD, marital rape, inequality in employment opportunities and remuneration, and communal discrimination (check for trigger warnings).

It will keep you hooked from the start. The author got me from the very first page when I read these beautiful lines by Rumi -
There is a candle in your heart, ready to be kindled
There is a void in your soul, ready to be filled.
You feel it, don't you?

In the end, I would just like to say that this is not just any book, the words written have the power to seep deep into your heart, and be etched there forever. These words will live with you till eternity and beyond. I can't recommend this book enough. The pen is indeed the mightiest sword, Heena Singhal. I hope you realize that you have written a masterpiece. The world will know it soon for sure.

When you read a thick book without getting bored with the added bonus of a storyline which keeps you Hooked till the end; these are the key indicators that the Book is well written. And I was so lost into the story of Noor and Reva that I didn't want this Book to get finished. As a debutant author, I must say that they have done a commendable job in blending Poems, stories of Kashmiri People and effects of the Partition.

Noor and Reva who were living a normal life ; until one day they came to know the bitter truth about their birth which gave a new purpose in their life. They wanted to find their origins. Noor, living with her parents in Spain was close to her father. Her mother was depressed with her past incidents which was the reason for the distance in their relationship. Noor got the motherly love from her aunt Haya and her best friend Zaid.

Reva an orphan girl; who lives in Delhi was a journalist. She was in desperate longing to know about her parents, where her roots were and why her parents chose a boy over her.
Read this book to know how their life gets connected and the answers they were searching for.
This is a masterpiece of literary work. The struggling stories of Noor and Reva were so relatable with all the women out there who had to face the world without opposing anything. It's for the women who are waiting to get equal rights and justice from society. Not in the corporate world but in our society also women are considered less than men.

The second thing which I love is how beautifully the characters are being linked. The different POV shows the amount of difficulties and struggle each character has to go through. I am in love with Zaid and his will power. Haya aunty was a darling character.

The author has amazingly described the beauty of Kashmir and Spain. The title which is named after one of Rumi's poems, also has some beautiful poems on love, life, sacrifices and grief. And how can I forget to mention the marvellous ending where all the mysteries are being revealed.

I can still go on and on about this book but let's keep that for the second post.

A MUST READ

Congratulations to the author Heena Singhal for writing an enthralling story book which will not only keep you hooked till the last page, but also force you towards deep thinking. I really loved the way author has designed the book. The book came to me with a special packet. The cover page illustration is beautiful and contextual. This is a perfect book and a best storyline complete book with lots of plot and twists.

This remarkable book begins with the context of the 1994 Prologue Kashmir .This book has five parts:-

Part:- 1 A New Moon
Part:- 2 The Lull
Part:- 3 Rainbows and Storms
Part:- 4 The Sunrise
Part:- 5 Wildflowers

The story revolves around two women Noor and Reva . Noor is a girl of mixed heritage in Spain and Reva is a beautiful girl from an orphanage from New Delhi and both of the girls are in quest to find there real home . There are many themes in the book, such as the abuse of the office , women's embryo, social sanctions, communal discrimination, PTSD, refugee suffering, marital rape and not belonging to the place of living in their own residence. Just as it has an interesting and unique story line, it also has elaborate writing and smooth transitions between scenes. The plot and plot twists are shocking and I love such books a lot. This book gripped me from the beginning and you can't stop reading it until you finish it.

✍️ Kashmir - this word has different emotions. Somehow we get fascinated, nostalgic, sometimes filmy or romantic while thinking or talking about Kasmir. It's an heaven for those people who leaves far away from the valley.

🍁☘️🍁 But the truth behind that white snowy paradise is harsh. The life of Kashmiri people is definitely not that fascinating. Since the beginning, they faced hard times to survive.

👉 This book initiate the story since 1994 which was remarkable time of Kashmir. Basically the life of local people has been narrated through Noor and Reva - main two female characters of this novel. Their life story were different but they were the passengers of same boat. Both of them were looking for their identity.

👉 The author gives full focus on female characters. There are so many characters
And most of them are female. The best part of this novel is - it has loud cry, hardest moment, narration of 'Devdasi' system in earlier times, refugee struggle, domestic violence and many more similar issues about which society doesn't want to talk. But author has narrated those topics in very simple language along with proper plots.

✍️ As a first novel, it's a wonderful work by the author. Thick book, different plot, unique cover and name, beautiful composition - it's a pure blend of blissful reading.

I, first of all, adored the perfect book cover. The story just does equity to its excellence.
It's a practically sweet story of finding trust and love after the destruction brought about by the conflict. I pull for the primary characters right all along, particularly Noor. The setting was environmental. I nearly headed out to Spain Kashmir with the clear portrayal of the writer and I'm most certainly perusing more Rumi now.

A portion of my #1 statements from the book are:

"More than treasures, there are carcasses that lie underneath the dry earth."
"Nobody never truly 'recuperates' from pain; one simply figures out how to deal with its aches. Like an individual would thicken the rooftop in the expectation of hailstorms."
"There is a thing about lies, the ones that wait around huge pieces of insights. They are the most hard to catch."
"Yet, recollections are carved in stone and not sand."
"Isn't it in absolution, that we find our innate sympathy? Also, doesn't sympathy birth all supernatural occurrences?"

I had such a unique experience reading this book being in touch with the author entire time. We discussed the characters, events and I was happy the author confirmed my feelings towards many things.

The storytelling was challenging for me. I got lost with the timelines, with people surrounding the main characters. I wish it was told from 2 different timelines past and present, which would have made the story smoother. So many things were mentioned in passing food, immigration, family, religion, poetry, war, feminism… So the story got drifted in many different directions when trying to deliver multiple messages.

The book has a very nice ending , story revealing the multi layers of the characters.

I congratulate the author in her first book and hope she continues telling many stories for years to come.

“Every story decides for itself the time to be told. Every story has a soul of its own and it chooses who gets to touch it and when."

"You are all of my goals.
Like the heavens are
To the dying soul"

"The biggest complexities that we face in life are not out there in the big, bad world, waiting to pounce on us; they are in the little world that we carry around forever in our chest."

"Yet, recollections are carved in stone and not sand.”

”Nobody ever truly recuperates from pain; one simply figures out how to deal with its aches. Like an individual would thicken the rooftop in the expectation of hailstorms.”

“I've obliterated in my heart all the love that was showered upon me. I only remember the hurt.”

—Songs of the Reed by Heena Singhal

TW: Marital rape, PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), refugee agonizing, discrimination.

The book follows two beautiful young girls—Noor of mixed heritage, and Reva—an orphan. Essentially belonging from Spain, and an orphanage in New Delhi, India, respectively, both the girls as we follow are on their own pursuits individually.

The former on a hunt to finally quench her thirst only on finding her real home, whereas, the latter being an orphan, is unswervingly determined to discover her family at some point.

Eventually, their contrasting path crosses, united by their longing and obligation, allowing them to discover the love and loathe in their lives and around the globe, finally concluding with a conscious fact that it is certainly in Kashmir that the war between the two never really terminates, while always leaving behind scars.

Considering a debut, the author is sure to have done quite a commendable job into bringing two seperate stories as one, and how effortlessly. The characters being potent, are impactful in their own ways. Also, the portrayal of society in the narrative looks practical to interpret and comprehend. However, the writing is quite lucid for better comprehension irrespective of any age group. Although, the abyss of the story would only be visible to those who choose to make their way through it.

Songs of the Reed is sure to reach it's perpetual height for a broader audience in the upcoming days for all right reasons. 💫

🙂 Cover of the book is artistic eye catching & based on a nice theme.
🙂Writing style of the book is just fabulous. Author beautifully blend two different individuals all together & make you feel the desperation of finding home.
🙂Language used in the book is not that simple nor that hard either. It's a mixture of easy to moderate language which you are going to enjoy a lot while reading it.
🙂 Characterization is the USP of the book. The way author built up all these characters & put forward their respective roles in the storyline. It's just phenomenal to read.
🙂 The book will surely make you relate with their emotions & feelings as author perfectly executed these in this book.
🙂 The book is an eye opener of contemporary time although it is set in 1994. The way women were treated at that time & the issues troubles they faced, author perfectly justified them through her penwork.
🙂 The small small detailing author focused in the book makes the book more connecting to read.
🙂Book is slowly paced & a huge one. The book is near about 750+ pages which needs a lion share of time to finish. But I must say investing so much time on this book is going to be a worth one for sure.

Goal setting is everywhere in our world. We set goals for our careers, health and lives in general. Modern society always encourages us to think about the next milestone. The real challenge is not determining if you want the result, but if you are willing to accept the sacrifices required to achieve your goal.

Songs of the by Reed Heena Singhal is a story of two girls Noor and Reva exploration for their roots. Noor lives in Spain and goes on board on a mission to her real home whereas Reva a loveable girl from an orphanage in New Delhi is on an indefatigable hunt for her family. It’s fairly interesting to notice and witness how their trails meet. It's captivating how they both deal with their suffering and life in general, their stories are not all bright but dark and have rough edges. The author has touched upon many social issues such as the abuse of the office, women's embryos, social sanctions, communal discrimination, PTSD, refugee suffering, marital rape etc.

The writing style of the book is stimulating. It has a perfect number of feelings and moods. The plot, the characters and the character development are just phenomenal for a first-time author. The words composed can penetrate deep into the heart of the readers and be remained there for a long time. The language used is not that simple nor that hard either. It's a combination of easy to moderate language which is enjoyable. The detail the author has focused on in the book makes the book more involving to read.

Overall, it's a very stunning book with an enthralling storyline and thought-provoking message.

This book is a beautiful medley of emotions that brings connection of self and our roots back to focus.

I got mesmerised by the way the story is woven and how it takes you places while still holding on to the basic fabric of emotions. The symphony of human feelings is created beautifully and keeps you spellbound till the end of the novel. (It became a sin to stop in middle and restlessness crept in to take a further deep dive into the tenderness and sentiments novel has to offer).

Not only the storyline, it’s interesting to see how responsible the author is about making people aware of the important issues concerning mental health. We don’t come across much people who are adding value to such issues, it was so pleasant to come across one through this book.

The characters in the story exude amazing traits. Be it Baba’s unswerving spirit, Zaid’s sturdiness, Noor’s unwavering quest for her real home or Reva’s active hunt for her family… they’re all so inspiring. Isn’t it inspiration that we all need at all times? This book gives it all, through its characters and beautiful.. very beautiful quotes. The quotes come and go like lord Krishna appears in the epic Mahabharata and leaves us enchanted and in trance with his wisdom and accuracy. The quotes come just at right times when most needed. I really loved that side of the book.

A must read for all who have a knack for reading something that leaves an aftertaste that lasts really, really long. Thanks Heena Singhal for creating this piece.

The Songs of the Reed by Heena singhal, is her first novel.many congratulations for your debut novel.its amazing story Very nice to read.
In this story we see the life of 2 girls. Although they are completely different, their life paths meet together. These two separate lives but have the same fate. Get historical details of New Delhi, Spain here.
The writer has brilliantly described the natural beauty of Kashmir and also brought out its dark side. The story of two girls' struggle to find a family. This path was not easy at all, they had to face various obstacles. These stories sometimes have great quotations which make the stories more interesting.

After this story finally I can say "their disparate paths cross, united by their common compulsions. Separately and together, they search for a meaning to the love and hate in their private lives and in the world, coming to realise that in Kashmir, at least, the war between the two is never truly over".
I recommend to all books lovers to read this book,Hope no one will be disappointed.

Songs of the reed

Have you ever felt after finishing a book, to close it, take a deep breadth, unable to make your mind think of anything else not just because it was deeply engrossing but because you want to think, about the characters, how beautifully structured it was, their dialogues, to just immerse in the beauty of the piece literature you just devoured?
Songs of Reed by @ is everything I just said.

Aptly titled ‘Songs of Reed’, a poem by Rumi which talks of love, not the fairy-tale type but of loneliness and separation. A love which is reduced to nothing but pain, whose void remains unfilled. In the book, we follow the story of Noor and Reva, with alternating narrations both of whose roots trace back to Kashmir but have currently lost all ties. The book is their longing to find legacy and a quest of redemption for some.

What I liked the most in the book is the multiplicity of characters, inspite of there being no dearth of povs, each and every character was given its representation, development and reasoning. Apart from the core theme, there lies a tribute to women. For women whose desires have been stabbed by patriarchy, for pricked childhoods and unhealed trauma they are made to carry as a scar through a lifetime. Though there were loose ends, entwined bits and pieces, all of it beautifully untangled at the end and I never saw that coming!

I can’t wait for people to read this and for the book to go places

Book : Songs of the reed
Author: heenal Singhal
Fav quote : I’ve obliterated in my heart all the love that was showered upon me. I only remember the hurt.

Review: The book is fiction narrative genre .
In the book a man close to death is discovered somewhere in strife-torn Kashmir, alone but for the company of birds, in a decrepit room that is silent but for their agitated songs. Where does ‘The Birdman’—as he is named by his perplexed rescuers—belong? In which soil is his misery rooted?
Roots are in fact the leitmotif of Heena Singhal’s Song of the Reed, inspired by Rumi’s poem of the same name, which talks of the lament emerging from the flute, and the longing to unite with its source: the stem from which it is cut and fashioned for the satisfaction of others.

This story brings about the bare truth of many tales buried under the layers of emotional prohibition since people generally try to keep them suppressed.
Also I loved the descriptions in the story they allow you to paint a vivid picture of the scene in your mind. Play of words is nice and playful , overall tone of the story is light not heavy.
The book weaves the story artistically, even though the plot is predictable the storyline keeps you hooked .
The characterisation is apt and let’s you connect with them .
The story tugs at your emotions on various levels.

4/5

The book blew me away for several reasons, firstly the book has a sweet back cover and the opening is really quirky and adorable. And just reading the index will tell you how lovely and fancy the book is going to be. A poignant emotion will be evoked and the beautiful description of the poignant language at every moment is capable of creating a situation in which any reader becomes enthralled.

This is a story of Noor and Reva with other characters like baba , zaid and an engimatic birdman play a crucial role in propelling the story.Noor , a girl of mixed heritage embarks on a quest to find her real home in Kashmir.while Reva an orphan also looks for her lost family..The path between the two cross and they try to find meaning of hate and love.

Congratulations to the author for writing a wonderful book which will not only keep you hooked till the last page, but also force you towards deep thinking. The concept of the book is interesting, engaging and unique. The way the author created the plots of the story is just amazing. The story and the narration is really fast paced. And the storytelling style is really amazing and it can make the readers totally engaged with the book.

I really enjoyed reading this book. would like to recommend this book to my fellow readers. Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. Must recommend.

Songs of the reed by Heena singhal the story start with a Abloodied body was brought by villagers into The Abdullah Hospital, in a distraught village on the outskirts of Srinagar. The man was unconscious, his tattered clothes reeking of urine and excreta.Seiya Khan summoned Dr Trilok Bedi. The nervous new nurse was afraid the man wouldn’t last the hour.there was no way he could be identified further. All that the people who carried him in could say was that the room they’d found him in, belonged to Motilal, a vendor of nader monje—fried lotus stems—outside Apex cinema hall in downtown Srinagar. When the police arrived, the valley people yielded no further information, remaining mute to questions posed by even the friendlier hospital staff. When she rose from medicating her patient’s skin, she caught a sight of his face. Her face was painted pale and the words that danced on her lips quickly cascaded down her throat.By the time Dr Trilok arrived, Sister Seiya was quivering in fear. Behind her, the Birdman had opened his eyes wide. They were fixed at her, as if sending a message only for her to decipher. In the days that followed, the nurse observed that the man’s eyes stayed open, but glued to the bird on the sill, a sliver of fear etched in them, something that only she could see.this book was well prepared by author .you should go about to read it .

Thank you💓💓💓💓

Partition of India holds the well of stories which were never explored. People who were there hold so much pain that we can never anticipate that. Specially Kashmir - once known as heaven on earth was turned into the most frightening on Earth. People who ran away from there, always found in difficult to settle down in a life of a survivor. People who lost their family and home found it difficult to settle down alone or with them.
This story covers lives of few families who saw the horrors of Kashmir and settled down in Spain still trying to recover and a girl Noor meeting another girl Reva who is from an orphanage in New Delhi. They come together and share their lives with each other leading to such beautiful turns in the story. The book seemed to be a little boring in the beginning but as the story built up it caught up with the excitement. Maybe that's the reason I found the book slightly long which can be reduced by a few chapters but Amazingly woven story around the characters and the place.
This book shows that how difficult it is for the people to move on after witnessing the horrors of war and losing loved ones in it. The difficulty with which the family goes through while managing them but no matter what we love them. This book will give you quotes and moments to remember. A different story after a long time. Recommended.

After a long time picked and read a book which triggers my emotions. Last year was hell lot of thrillers and action books and yeah romance sometimes. But while the end of the year was approaching I thought to read something emotional and thats when I landed up on this book.

Honestly speaking at first I thought this book is not my cup of tea. But guess what??? I did it!!!
I finished it few days back and can't really wait to share my experience with this one.

The story was mind blowing. It was something worth reading. I dont know how Heena mam came with such an amazing plot. But yeah it was and i enjoyed it like anything.

I loved how beautifully the story has been written. The longing for the family, the refugees lives and their feelings have been written in a great manner.

The way in which the story has the quest to find its roots is magnificent. I really can't think living like that, where I don't know my identity.

I loved this book. Yeah... maybe this book might not be everyone's cup of tea but those who enjoy heavy and deep meaning plots should go for this one.

The narration was good. At times I felt the characters are overly described but you know some books need that. So, no complaints. The emotions and the feelings and the thoughts of the characters was something which I enjoyed the most in this book.

A complete 5 stars read for me.
Loved it...

How can something be so simple and touchy?
How come one book made me feel 1000 emotions together?

I loved reading this book.

The story started with the introduction of Noor and her life.Being a single daughter who is living with her mum and dad,mum being little unstable by mind due to her past trauma. But dad was a hero.Noor's life was something which I got connected to the most. That longing to know where were her roots,to know about her real family and everything just felt like myself.

Then came Reva in the story. Her life was quite similar to Noor except parents. She was brought up in an orphanage but the longing was same.

Are lives of these two people is connected? If yes then how?

Read the book and get to know.

My opinion:

This book is a fabulous work in the literary section.I loved how the author came up with this much deep plot. The author has a wonderful hand in writing and she has completely given it a justice.

The language of writing is easy and lucid. Its something even the beginner readers can read easily. But yeah..the emotions are something which I would say only those who will actually read the story, will understand it.

I loved how wonderfully the author has narrated the lives of the individuals. Zaid was a character who being a supporting character was given a complete justice.

Loved this amazing book!
Must read.
Highly recommended!

Review:

This is a book that will definitely stay with you for a long while because of the issues that the book deals with. The seamlessly flowing plot is strong and the background set for the character's lives are relevant, I loved the transition from scenes because they were just gliding into one another!

The story is about Noor and Reva who are trying to find their place in this world! They are scouring to find their roots, Noor who's living in Spain is set on finding her real home and Reva who lives in New Delhi is set on finding her family. It's fascinating on how they both deal with their trauma and life in general, their stories are not all sunshine and rainbows but dark and have rugged edges but its totally worth to read till the end!

The characters were well developed, the dealing with PTSD, stress, rape, abuse, harassment, etc is really well done, the plot is progressive and the rising and falling action within the chapters are great, it has a few trigger warnings so one should make sure to read those before reading much else. Overall a book I thoroughly loved and think most readers would love!!

It is a big tome of 600 plus pages so obviously you need time to go through it.But once you start reading the story takes takes you along with it .

There is a candle in your heart, ready to be kindled. There is a void in your soul, ready to be filled. You feel it, don’t you? -

Rumi
The above couplet infact delineates what the protagonist of the story feel.
The story deals love , loss , militancy , riots and many other sensitive issues like rape etc..This is a story of Noor and Reva with other characters like baba , zaid and an engimatic birdman lay a crucial role in propelling the story.Noor , a girl of mixed heritage embarks on a quest to find her real home in Kashmir.while Reva an orphan also looks for her lost family..The path between the two cross and they try to find meaning of hate and love.
Although the story is good however at many places writing gives legitimacy to militancy in Kashmir.lines like
" people who lost everything in the civil war that besieged the Indian state of Kashmir"give a jarring note.
further many issues like marital rape are given oversimplification which otherwise is a complex issue..It would have been better if the author had not strayed away from the core story.

This is the author, Heena Singhal’s debut book and I am amazed at the life and conflict she brings to her characters. All the protagonists are extremely real and relatable especially Noor and her hatred for her mother (which she herself questions), Zaid, Baba, all of whom give the book a very raw and lifelike approach.

The simple language and lucid writing along with the descriptions of each character and places mentioned; tells me that this is an extremely well researched book by the author, and her settings and narrative made me feel as though I’m also a part of their journey.

The emotions of having lost, to find a companion and lose again is effortlessly portrayed.

The pain, longing and tyranny of the partition and how it impacted the lives, destiny and livelihood of the refugees are beautifully narrated. The difficulty of moving on after witnessing displacement from their own motherland, the horrors of war and losing loved ones is heartbreakingly rendered.

Songs of the Reed is definitely a must-read. Totally recommended by me.

My overall rating for this book is 5/5.
